I guess I haven’t actually seen why this started, but it seems most assume it had something to do with fandom. If at any point you find yourself wanting to assault someone over your fandom, you’re taking it way too seriously.

I think people need to understand that there is a huge difference between the ultras ("barras") and the rest of the fans. One of the positive highlights that a lot of south american players mention in interviews when they go back to their countries is how different the stadium atmosphere is in México during certain derby days. You'll see a stadium like the Azteca filled with 80 or 90 thousand fans and they're almost evenly split between fans of both teams playing. América vs Cruz Azul, América vs Chivas, Cruz Azul vs Pumas... I've been to FINALS where a title was at stake and emotions were tense, but a fan of one team could sit next to a fan of another team and they would almost ignore each other throughout the whole game (minus a handshake at the end when one team won). The fan of the winning team stays to celebrate while the other leaves in tears but without violence. It was truly eye-opening to see how civilized the whole thing actually was considering the crazy atmosphere, flares, and chants. On the other hand, I've accidentally taken the wrong turn in a hallway or ramp at my local stadium and witnessed ultras (barras) of the same team fighting EACH OTHER for God knows what reason.
If people could experience both, they would understand that fans are not the problem... it's these barras, these ultras that use any excuse to turn violent.

People need to understand that there is a difference between Mexican fandom/football culture and supporters groups/"barras". I've been watching and following Mexican football my entire life. Barras didn't exist in Mexico. It's a fairly recent phenomenon that has been supported by LigaMX. The majority of the problems that have been occurring in Mexican football over the last decade can be traced to the barras. Including the infamous chant. The question is who are the people that are in the supporters groups that are responsible for what happened in Queretaro? Mexican football culture is what my Father taught me, not some ridiculous supporters group. LigaMX needs to ban barras from the stadiums, period.

Look here friends, it would be a horrible mistake to conflate and confuse the Mexican people with Mexican football culture. There IS a big problem with the latter, and there is no need to even try to sugar coat the reality. Every Liga MX game I’ve been to, and every El Tri game I’ve been to, has featured detestable, violent, and inexcusable behavior. Fights break out in the stands. Garbage thrown onto the pitch, laser pointers flashing into players eyes, and people moving into seats they don’t have tickets for, or else jamming extra people between seats (20 seats in a row, but 23+ are there, ruining the experience for those who paid money for their seats). It’s a problem. A big problem. It is NOT synonymous with the people of Mexico, it is a failure of the Mexican Football Federation and the owners of LigaMX clubs who tolerate this thuggish behavior. England used to have hooligan problems too. Likewise, it was not a reflection of the English people, but rather Football culture and what owners and association authorities have been willing to tolerate and turn a blind eye to.
What I hope with all my heart as a diehard footy fan, is that this disgusting episode-which has led to the death and injury of human beings-will force changes to happen. It can be done, and it must be done.

An estimated 17 people were killed at the game - 17!!! In Southern California in particular for Dodgers, Lakers and Raiders, there is a close tie between a lot of Mexican- American fandom and street gangs. These gangs are violent, deadly, and closely tied to the Mexican drug cartels. Moreover, they essentially take local teams as their gang colors, and then they take the opposing teams fans as a rival gang to be attacked. As a result, a lot of violence around local professionals teams take place. Don't forget the behavior of Mexico fans during the Nation League final against USMNT - they nearly put one of their own players in the hospital. Given this history, the violence isn't surprising but the scale of it is - 17 people dying because fans got mad is really shocking. Btw, as someone who grew up Southern California immersed in Mexican culture, I can say to anyone who attacks Mexican-Americans or Mexicans in general because of this, you are a racist! This was the result of gangs, cartels, and the very pathetic Mexican Soccer Federation that has tacitly approved this behavior for way too long. Nearly every country in Europe has gone through this kind of "hooliganism" before, but they cracked down hard and we now rarely see it. I was planning on going to Mexico City for USMNT vs. MEXICO game with family, but given what happened, we might instead go to Orlando. This is sad for everyone- but most of all for Mexicans.

I want to be thoughtful and fair in my comment: Herc is right to point out the xenophobia that underlies some (probably more like many) of the sentiments in reaction to the incident at Queretaro, rather than having compassion for the victims of the violence. That being said, my encounters with Mexican fans, both in person (at Red Bull Arena for CONCACAF Champions League) and online have clearly conveyed a repugnant mentality. Quite honestly, there's not even a close second place for the nastiest opposing fans I've come across in any sport.

There is a difference between Mexican soccer fans and the Mexican people at large. The hyper fanatic Mexican soccer fans cause many issues. From the chants, to the violence, to throwing stuff at players they just don’t understand the line between civility and chaotic fandom. This kind of stuff doesn’t even happen to such a scale with the Central American teams like it does with the Mexican fans. And with regard to the ‘xenophobia’ claim, it’s pure rubbish. We see the footage ourselves. We all saw the riots at Queretaro, we saw Mexican fans throwing objects at player in the Nations League Final, we hear the chants during every Mexico game. How are people going to NOT have a negative perception of Mexican soccer fans? We can agree that it’s not all Mexican fans, but it’s enough of them to make a big deal of it.

I consider the xenophobic dialogue to be insincere. Everybody in media wants to shape public opinion by denying reality. Violence at soccer games is endemic in South America. It's been known for years. That's not true in very many other places and people. I don't say that we relegate Latinos to some kind of second-class status somehow, but someone who is travelling into that situation should take it into account.
