@@DEFTALKSbyAadi I have listened to every word of the talk, sometimes repeating portions. I have served in Tangtse, Chushul and N Glacier as a Capt and Maj during 1990-1993. I have lived in Chushul for six months. I have been to Spangur Gap, Pangong Tso and Rezang la several times in Jongas and One Tons. I can relate to each and every word of what Col Raina said. Listening to such talks is much less tedious than reading a book.

    Hi Adhi,
‘Def Talks’ 👌🏻. Coming to current one, Col Raina is too good; respect!!!
I often see Nehru being portrayed as either fool or unwise on 1962. Am not denying the validity of that argument as all sorts of data points, info n learnings are available, NOW. So, retrospective analysis is probably easiest thing to do (what / who could have done better is always a question); who knows our current international stance that we have taken (globally) cud be a moot one or even foolish after 20-30 years…just saying how unpredictable times can be.
I think Nehru ji, rather india was naive as well as prevailing situation, those times nationally or globally, across the nations specially in 3rd world. While I agree, there could have been miscalculations n mismanagement; One of the potential views of Nehru ji during first decade of post independence was ‘nascent India cannot afford a war or/and any situation’ and his intrinsic focus, which is natural (note, even current PM’s 15+ meetings with his Chinese counterpart didn’t fetch anything, even details on what transpired hasn’t been disclosed; but another aggression. Our premier has never taken other premier’s name in any forum…I see it as an act not to snub China and an attempt to safeguard India’s interests, don’t see any room for ideological inclinations). And I see validity to a great extent in his (Nehru Ji’s) sublime thinking of keeping India’s larger interests (primarily domestic, while his understandings / limitations can be debatable) not to forget evolution of thinking/learning can happen only with experience (and it takes time to cutoff old moorings and leanings; and inclinations imbibed, during a course of active life). And US offering to india - seat in security council, was a ploy to get India aligned with it; I don’t see any good intent behind the offer and can empathize with Nehru Ji’s obvious stance. Can India trust US now?
Ideally, probable reasons or surrounding situations on each key decision by govt. that time; which I think require a separate session (assessed in a debatable manner with experienced speakers, while few should be Devils Advocate to Nehru ji, that’s a holistic way…I think, similar to some of the popular English documentaries, where we leave the judgement to audience) if he or those times have to be ever evaluated. Unfortunately I don’t see that happening anywhere now with all sophistications. Coz, off-late I see planned / unplanned effort undercurrent, to bash Nehru for valid n invalid reasons (though surprisingly ruling govt. spokespersons have become silent on Nehru-China😉…after recent incursions, by China).
That said, the goal of this session is served; very insightful and thoroughly enjoyed.
    Appreciate it!
    Arka.

Absolutely in agreement. Like I mentioned it is easy to comment on JLN today without really knowing what were pressures on him. If I were to really churn the whole episode to bring out one major issue, it would be letting Menon-Kaul duo do what they did. A PM can't be expected to be a domain expert (and he had too many things on his plate) but the RM (again not a domain expert but had to perforce focus on the matters military) and Gen Kaul committed a cardinal sin. I also agree that both JLN and NaMo have tried to be friendly with china; the difference, however, is that while trying to do so, military preparedness as well as reactions have been different, plausibly because of what happened in 1962, in which case we can empathise with JLN whose predictions went wrong. In today's global scenario, I predict BRICS taking a centrestage over next one decade and both India and china have no option but to bury the hatchet. Let's see.
Thanks for your elaborate comment and kind words.

Maybe some insights could be gained by a book called 'A life in diplomacy' by former foreign secretary MK Rasgotra
I remember listening to a talk by him some years ago when his book came out, he mentioned at the time of independence the foreign affairs ministry staff left for the UK. Nehru was THE foreign office.... Along with other roles. So you can imagine being thrown in the deep and having to govern a country at the same time managing external affairs The mistakes he made could be considered minor when compared to Mao. Who may have won exyernal wars in Korea and India but was behind tens of millions of deaths of his own. Nehru set in motion a policy of not joining either camp that endures to this day. And he wanted to be friends with China. Both countries of sizable population and complimentarities. Millenia old civilisations with zero historical grievances. Too bad that second policy could not be achieved
