So much respect for Neil always being a student. Even when he was considered a GOAT, he still practiced and studied. He is DEFINITELY one of the best EVER!
This man could split atoms with his precision. Always an honor to watch Neil play.😮
Neil, the GOAT of drumming, the Professor of the drum kit. Drummers use metronomes, metronomes use Neil Peart! Attended 12 of their shows and had the pleasure of working backstage for one! Fan since 1980!!
Neil, an amazing drummer who never stopped challenging himself. Truly one of the greats!! ❤
Rush fan here
Neil and Rush knew how to put it down.
Neil playing way out of his comfort zone in the swing/jazz genre in this tribute to the incomparable Buddy Rich. No easy job, yet Neil nails it. What else would one expect from one of the best to ever sit behind a kit.
the tears just sprung out of me as soon as he started his signature cowbells, so great to see him at his prime and still so sad to think he was taken away from us so early having lived a very clean and healthy and hard working musician's life compared to his peers.
Rush fan since 1975. Thanks so much for doing this from the Buddy Rich Tribute Concert.
Neil is the GOAT!!
RUSH FOREVER!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Neil was a huge influence on me as a drummer and I looked up to him as a person. There will never be another like him. RIP Professor!!
I play drums and I’m in my early 50’s… Seen Rush 17 times. NP was an idol of mine. I once met him in a breakfast restaurant in 1997 in upstate NY. I knew he was shy but felt I wanted to meet him. I paid my bill and as I passed by his table said, “Hello” he said hello back I said “I’m sorry to bother but wanted to thank you for years of music and inspiration.”He said, “your welcome enjoy your morning…. “
I miss him so much. Thanks for the reaction and review
You'd be hard pressed to ever find a performance where Neil Peart ever missed a single beat, flip, or stroke of any roll, fill, whatever. What a frigging beast.
A walking, talking, human metronome!! A scholar of humanity, and just a really nice guy !!
Greetings from YYZ 🇨🇦
RIP Professor
Rush fan here. This was from the Buddy Rich Tribute concert. Buddy Rich's daughter called Neil to head up the show at her late father's request. Buddy told her next to me, this is the best there is. This kit was a stripped down Jazz/Swing kit for the show with a NP logo in the same place the BR logo would have been on Buddy's Kit. The band in the back is Buddy's band at the time of his last show before he died. Believe it or not Neil was disappointed in his play. Steve Smith the former Journey drummer was part of the tribute, and Neil told Steve how much is drumming had improved since the last time the saw each other drum. Steve said he took lessons from jazz drummer Freddie Gruber, so Neil (who was already considered by many as the best) took lessons from Freddie and got even better. By the time he did the solo for the 40th tour, he very seldom flipped to the fat side of the sticks anymore.
Neil manages to make so much sound from such a limited number of pieces (in this particular set). I love how he always changes the tempo and feel of the solo, like it's telling the story of a person on an adventure encountering different things. A Neil Peart drum solo isn't just a drum solo, it's a story.
This took a lot of guts for Neil to step out of his element and do this! So many other drummer swith jazz backgrounds and better swing. That said he is still my all time favorite! The man was fearless!
I've been a Rush far for over 40 years... And yet the technique and execution is Amazing !!! Never disappointing !! Thanks again Colby !!
Colby, He is a "zone." An otherworldly zone.
I'm a Rush fan till '79 and Neil is one of the top three best drummers of all times. Also the cowbells are trade mark of Neils drum solos
Where he beats every drummer on earth is...creativity and vision.
I grew up with these guys.He was the best and still is.
The crowd blew up at the cowbell segment because that's a piece he's used in live Rush drum solos since the 70s. Rush fans know the cowbell part pretty much as well as Tom Sawyer.
One of my favorite drummers. MACHINE
Rush has been my favorite band since 1979. Only reason I found your video.
I believe this was a tribute to Buddy Rich, and the band watching is the Buddy Rich Big Band.
I could watch Neill for hours.
Truly an inspiration and a great source for my continued drum playing evolution.
Thank you for posting
one third of the rock gods, neil was truly incredible and gave us so much. rip professor
Had the pleasure of seeing Rush 53 times including the final show at the Forum in LA and watched Neil take his final bow.... A blessing indeed!
Neil Peart.. your favorite drummer's favorite drummer ❤
ive been a fan since 85 and ive seen them 5 times.every show was amazing.r.i.p professor.
That was buddy rich scholarship memorial. Total of 9 drummers played with buddy riches band. Should check them all out.
It's amazing how he can mix up he's old and new solo's just brilliant.
It breaks my heart that we lost him. I’ve loved the professor and Rush sense 75. Saw them many times and loved that he never stopped learning or trying new stuff.
Yes you do. I studied under Neil back in the day. Not only a great drummer he was an outstanding human being!
Play with a big band, the Professor STILL gets elements of his usual Rush solos in there
I love the story told by Geddy about Neil's audition. Refers to him showing up in a tiny car with a tiny kit i.e. a 28" bass drum only to be speechless when he climbed into said kit.❤️🥁
Liked Rush for the last 40-years and seen them live a few times😊
Rush Fan for many many years So sad we lost Neil an absolute Genius
RUSH fan here since 1981! Saw them 9 times. Best one was 5th row in Nashville at the old Starwood amphitheater.
Rush allowed Neil to express himself without any restrictions. Red Barchetta was a favourite, I would play it endlessly ...or at least until the neighbours called the cops.
This is the performance that he sampled for the "big band" finale of his Rush drum solos.
You are watching one of the best drummers ever !!! I think being Canadian might have held back some of his notoriety . Brilliance!!!!😊
Been a fan since 1977 when I bought 2112 through Columbia Records 12 LP's for a penny deal.
I am a huge Rush fan, and have tremendous respect for their level of musicianship.
I started playing drums at 16 or 17yrs old in 1980 or 81 RUSH and Neil became my #1 influence and a big part of my drum thinking. I did not try to be a Neil Peart clone but learned how to think some what like him but also explore and try different things. I have come up with some things that sound like but slightly different than Neil and some things I have never heard anyone else do although someone on earth probably has. It is funny but Neil looked a lot like my brother Bill in his 30's and 40's. I also build custom drum sets for part of my living and have written well over 1000 poems and did 7 poetry CDs and 2 comedy CDs. I have around 100 original songs but still need to record them. Only sang a few parts on CD to remember them. Neil also influenced some of my writing. I wrote a lot about conflicts with in human nature and the problem of evil and mental illness of many kinds. 1 RUSH song helped me finish a poem 1 year after I wrote the fist half.
My top drummers all time, Buddy Rich, Neil Peart, Danny Carey.
He was THE Best!
Favorite Drummer!! The best!!
You should watch his 2008 drum Solo from Cottontail with the Buddy Rich orchestra to see how much studying with Freddie Gruber improved his playing.
He is the reason that I started to play drums.. Subdivisions Tom Sawyer, YYZ He is the definition of a legend..
Cool to see him playing such a small kit!
I would love to have that skill and talent. I would think that a concert of drumming like this would wear a person out .
Big Rush fan, saw them many times and watched Neil with my binoculars. His stick control is insane.
saw rush so many times from the 70's he is the goat ! RIP Neil
Absolutely awesome! Thank GOD he gave us Neil to listen to and remember.
God has nothing to do with it. Stop stealing credit and giving it to an unprovable delusion. We musicians work for this, it isn't god given. I'm proof.
RUSH...3 guys who could make some noise!
Yep huge Rush fan. Luckily, got to see him solo live 11 times. Brilliant.
The professor on the drum kit lurch baby. Mister dexterity and control. I missed the crap out of Neil Peart and frank zappa
The Professor sits at a drum kit, class is in session. Rush, Canada’s Premier Rock band!
I am a rush fan as well as a drummer myself. I finally got to see rush in 2011 at the old Ryman Theater In Nashville tn. They played almost 4 hrs!
I've never seen this video and I'm a lifelong Neil and Rush fan! Thank you! This was great!!!
Yes I'm a HUGE RUSH fan and I don't have to brag for the man he was the BEST! Thank You for posting this of him! RUSH RULES!
Rush fan here. Never saw this particular solo before. Thanks!!
Saw 14 Neil solos over a 35 yr stretch
Best drummer ever!
A rush conert has more air drumming than an army . 1979 i picked up the sticks as a 12 year old kid never looked back. Neil was my hero and inspiration. I've always said if i could get half as good as he was i would feel like ive done it. My parents were very supportive. With a 10 piece ludwig kit in my bedroom i tried to bust the heads.
It is dang difficult not to be a fan of RUSH. Neil was amazing and left all way too soon.
Rush is my favorite band and Neil is my favorite drummer of all time. Great reaction. I look forward to seeing more.
An absolute genius, a drumming prodigy. I believe one of his influences was Mr. Buddy Rich the goat himself! Just imagine them 2 playing the drums together today.
Anyone who could experience that and not list him as one of the all time greats is missing something
I have been a rush fan since they were a band
yep. Rush fan here.
Rush fan here!!!! I own this concert on VHS! lol This performance of "Cotton Tail" was great and the "cowbell" work he did in the "A Show of Hands" convert video. :) If you can, check out the performance of "Greensleeves" by Marvin 'Smitty' Smith. It's from the same performance as this "Cotton Tail" video and 'Smitty' really goes off!!!! Thanks for posting!!!
All Rush fans haha, me included. RIP Professor, u were the best.
You need to do the fire on ice Drum solo and song Neil did..... tribute to Ice hockey. It's amazing!. Somewhere around 2010..
Colby
Rush's classic song, Tom Sawyer is hard to play right stated by "Professor" Neil Peart.
Best drumer u will ever experience 😂
mention peart and the rush fans will come... because of the drums... as a guitar player he amazes me how musical his playing is... my drummer friends go nuts over his playing, I love the music he is creating... you can hear things here that he clearly incorporated later in the famous frankfurt solo... he was always learning, building, inventing...
Rush Fan Yes , 40 years now
2112 ! First album as a young teen👍
He was the best percussion player in the world.
Love Rush. Definitely one of my favorite drummers of all time!
Huge Rush fan. Only saw them once though. Permanent Waves Tour. 2112 is on my top 10 favorite albums of all time.
Here in Canada they were popular.
Who isn't a Rush fan? So talented
I only recently got into them, they completely missed my radar... amazing band
Yes I have been to concerts since high school when I saw Jimi in 1967. Cream on their Wheels of Fire tour and Led Zeppelin at the Forum.
I have grown fond of Neal Peart, however I have never seen Rush live. I don’t like to rank anyone but I would throw Ginger Baker, Neal Peart and John Bonham in the mix.
With Rush it was Alex Lifeson on guitar with their debut album on 8-track that blew my mind.
Just sayin’
I love guitar mastery foremost but I appreciate musicianship at all levels. Whatever tickles my ears.
Thanks for the early Neal Peart video!
2112 for life.
I'm a huge RUSH fan.
Been a Rush fan for 40 yrs
I’ve been a RUSH fan forever. My husband is a rabid fan…. Neil Peart will be missed forever
RUSH YES, best drummer ever!!!!!!
75 to 80% of the music i've been listening to this year is RUSH.
I think i got an addiction
The Professor ❤
Hell Yeah!!! Neil is awesome
My #1 since 76
Hell yeah saw them on your twice once on The Moving Pictures and on the Signals tour
Neal showing his jazzy side
When I watched Brandon Toews on Drumeo do 175 RUSH songs in 25 minutes, my respect for Neil shot through the roof. A LEGEND!!!!!
Are you kidding me 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best drums ever maybe buddy rich
First seen Rush in 1976 absolutely awesome. All the world's a stage still one of the best live albums I've ever heard.
Anyone who had the All The World's a Stage album will recognize the cow bell work, and some other sections from this solo. The 1976 solo was my first heard, and is still my favorite Neil solo.
Im proud to say I saw Neil and RUSH 23 times. Im pissed it wasn't 53. It was indeed a total honer to have seen him that many times.
Number one comment let's goo keep the videos coming buddy I love them
