It's hard not to be a 'fanboy' for any of us who own an EV truck - from any brand. They all have incredible strengths, and once someone goes electric, there's rarely anyone turning back. But when it came to replacing Igor, I really dug into the weeds and tried to make the most informed decision I could. Did I make the right choice? Would you have chosen the same? Please share your thoughts and views below! Thanks for watching!
@truckedupevs I pick tesla event hough the range is not the best, it's just jammed packed with features and I love the way the truck looks, rivian.. beautiful truck and they showed that their trucks are durable and have great build quality, and Silverado it has great range and I believe, depending on specs there is the folding of the back seats so you can extend the bed which is amazing.. I wished tesla stuck with their original plan in doing that.
@@blakeogeris2494 Thanks for the feedback, Blake! Consumer Reports' consumer ranking just rated Rivian R1T the 4th least reliable vehicle - not just for evs - on the market, so that plays a factor, especially for the price. Cybertruck has lots going for it, but every one of the original specs laid out at its reveal weren't met. I think Tesla will actually meet those, but in about 2 or 3 years of production and improvement. Silverado doesn't have the mid-gate and most of the cool features unless you buy the top trim. If you've got money to burn and you're not worried about the prices coming down by 30~50% in the next 12~24 months, I say go for it. Too pricey and unpredictable for my budget though.
The lightning just happened to have the features I was looking for. Locking rear diff, creature comforts like lane assist, AC for the 2nd row, all wheel drive, no leaf spring, and looks like a truck. The EV part is just a bonus.
You nailed it. I had a list of all the extra goodies this truck had compared to all the others...but the vid would have been another 10 minutes long! 🙂 It's a great all-purpose truck -and happens to be electric. Love the comment!!
@Mahaffeytattoo-ux2ro the independent suspension is fantastic. Drive a Ranger at work, I feel like rolling it driving 30 into a sharper turn. Did 90km/h up and down windy roads, sits like a sports car. I love my ⚡️
@@marosjerabek1779 I'm looking forward to getting mine. We have a 19 Honda Pilot but I really miss having a truck. I feel bad putting lumber and other DIY stuff in the back of the Pilot.
@@marosjerabek1779 I agree. I had a 2007 Ranger before making the jump to my 1st Lightning (ua-cam.com/video/y1em9kLdRuM/v-deo.html), and the difference was totally shocking. My Ranger was like a covered wagon with a wheel missing compared to this.
THE best EV truck comparison video I've yet come across! You covered the specs that matter in a way thats easy to comprehend..... well done sir ..... liked and subscribed. Im in the US, but after similar comparisons (without te help of a good comparison video like this) I also chose a Lightning.... but mine is a 2023 XLT ER and I LOVE it!
I can not comment on most of the other EVs besides the cost. The lightning has a great range of pricing and features. I have a 24 lariat now and I have a few extra features that drew me to it. If you have driven an EV the first thing I noticed was how quiet the cab was in my lightning. It is probably twice as quiet as my Rav4 prime was. The second was the accessible "frunk" or I just refer to it as a trunk. The rest are ok and useful but the lightning tops them all and I use it all the time. The lariat has full memory seats, pedals, mirrors, and steering wheel so my 5' wife can easily jump in and memory adjust everything. To top all of this off I was able to not only get a discount for but also have 0 apr financing. I live in New York so not sure if this is everywhere. I doubt I will ever go to a gas vehicle again.
I've heard many similar comments. Ot's a great all-around truck, regardless of the fact it's electric - but I'm the same - I'll never go back to I.C.E. I envy your Lariat. The Flash doesn't come with the memory settings.
Excellent round up and review. I bought a 2023 XLT SR in late March. 11k miles later I am loving it. The Lightning in any trim is the best bang for the buck truck available. I pray they can optimize production over the next 24 months to be able to do it profitably at volume.
Congrats on having an ev truck and a Lightning to boot! I think Ford is taking the pain now for a better, strengthened future. Once T3 Skunkworks hits the street in 26/27, I think they'll be in an envious position for all the suffering now.
You know, at first I thought Tesla was a better option because they built an EV from the ground up. But after watching your video, I think Ford made the right move in converting an existing platform to electric. That move prevented a lot of unknowns, and allowed for an existing ecosystem of parts and accessories to be readily available for the F150 platform. Also, I agree with you, the classic instrumentation is superior. I have a Tesla Model 3 - I've gotten used to the screen, but honestly, it's not optimal - and in some cases unsafe. A quick button push is easier than navigating a menu. Not to mention the screen isn't easy to reach sometimes. Congrats on your F150, I think if I were to choose a truck, I would choose the same.
Good insight, as always. I think Teslas are great. Until 2024, nothing could match the 3 and the Y. But I just can't overcome the blank space in front of me and no direct driving data. Still, if Tesla somehow convinced its CEO to get over himself and simply introduce a HUD to every model, they'd be back on top overnight.
@@truckedupevs I think it could be a cost cutting measure. As the more expensive Model S and X both have the normal dash display every other car on the planet has. It's only the 3 and Y that don't have it. Elon's hell bent on maximizing profit, but not for profit's sake. His ultimate goal is to fund his other projects and further his goals like full autonomy, Optimus, Grok, battery energy density, and I believe he's working on a $25k model EV. On the other hand, they did add an extra screen to the rear of the car on the Model 3 refresh - so maybe I don't know what I'm sayin' :D
The CT snapping breaking from towing seems to be because the guy did some extreme things with it before trying to tow something. Still my favorite choice is like yours: a Lightning Flash. Also, you did not mention it, but first years vehicules tend to have more problems. The lightning has been on the market for a long while now and the dealers and maintenance crew understand what this truck is.
Hey, thanks for the comment and feedback. Yes, he has a habit to destroy vehicles on his channel deliberately, and that's why he gets so many views. Still, I think it should be be pointed out that Whistlin' Diesel did do these things to BOTH vehicles. In fact, with this very argument that you and thousands of others have made, he did a follow-up video and exposed the ford F150 to the exact same conditions times a factor of ten to the bumper hitch, and it easily help up. The CT has had four cited cases with towing where not only the hitch broke off, but the frame itself, which is irreparable. I am of the mind that this is a design flaw, and a recall will eventually occur. How to fix it? Who knows. Because I plan to do a lot more towing with the channel in the future, I can't risk my $ on the CT yet. Tesla had over four years to make this work and CT is still looking like it is pre-production. The Lightning has had very few problems since its roll-out - but nothing to the degree the CT has experienced. I'm like you. I weighed it all in and ended up with a Flash in my driveway. Two years from now? Might be a Cybertruck 🙂
Also...that "like a rock" commercial always cracked me up, just absolutely ruckusing that truck, front and rear wheels bouncing fully off the ground then fully slamming into bottom out 😂😂
I did the math too. I don't see anything coming in the next few years that will even compete with the F150 Lightning as a real truck for real work. My 2023 XLT Extended range is leased for 39 months. I don't anticipate anything new at all by the end of that lease. In short, I feel I got the right truck and I'm very happy with it. To add, I live in the southern plains and a heat pump would be nice, but not a deciding factor for me personally.
Exactly. It comes down to simple numbers, benefits per dollar, and intrinsic value, and I 100% agree that nothing during that term is going to come along and match that.
I have a 2023 Lightening XLT and I love it! The ride, the cold A/C (I’m in Florida), it’s fast, super comfortable and has all the features I wanted. It’s my daily driver and I charge at home once every two weeks, while I sleep. I’ve had many, many trucks and this one, by far, is my favorite! New sub!
Yes, it's out of the range (hehe) of many truck folk, but still, with the mid-ate & the massive battery I can see GM justifying some of that price, but not all of it. The fit and finish for a $100k+ truck isn't there. I was close, but I'll wait to see how things develop over the course of the next year or two. Thanks for the comment!
My son bought a lightning pro . We have available Silverado's in the area and yes he could order a cyber truck and get in a couple weeks . The rivian was not considered . He did not enjoy the dealer experience and drove off with a minimal charge so not much effort except for shoving the sale down his thought . He made an original reservation and was invited to select but that's when they jacked up the price and he cancelled . So patience has worked for him . Price was key and buying a bottom level made the most sense . The standard range is more than enough capacity and half that would be plenty . Having more than what you need is wasteful and inefficient. I got to drive and it's the best thing I have drove . I think the battery balances out the weight incredibly well as gas vehicles have a large amount of empty bed weight in the front where the engine is . Weight balance is a key to many things in a a vehicle . There is no range anxiety as a daily driver and driving at home . I could say it's less than a gasoline supplied vehicle . The lighting tells you where your at and you charge on your time where a gas vehicle is in control of that and you have to go station away from home. I don't own and I know it's better and you can't argue that in any level
All incredibly good points. The Pro is insanely good value. I can't think of anything else on the road that matches the functionality, even trucks using any form of fuel. Thanks for adding insight to the discussion!

I'm not shopping for anything and have never been interested in pick-ups. But right now, I'm admiring the Silverado EV and the Lightning Flash.
I thought having no driver screen on a Tesla was stupid before owning a Tesla. It's not. It takes a few days to become accustomed to it. All Tesla vehicles can operate everything that's needed while driving with voice control, by pushing one button on the steering wheel. Press a button for temperature, HVAC fan speed, seat heat, music, phone calls, navigation, open the glove box and wiper settings too if desired. It's actually safer than reaching for buttons, switches and knobs on a dashboard. And looking at the Tesla MPH number at the top left corner of the center screen actually keeps your field of vision high, above the dash and across the windshield, instead of looking down under a steering wheel. The Tesla set-up works well. That's coming from someone who has driven hundreds of different vehicles over several decades. I always liked a lot of buttons and switches on vehicle dashboards, but they just aren't necessary. It would be like adding buttons, switches and knobs to a smart phone.
I think the F150 flash at $79 K is good value especially while Ford is losing approximately $36k on it. They are paying you to drive it lol.. I am an EV fan and I enjoy your videos. We are still at the beginning of this Energy transition and people need to get up to speed and see the big picture for the sake of Canadas survival in the world economy. As an EV owner for 2 years in BC I am glad I am no longer buying gas and supporting foreign countries. I save $500 a month on fuel cost and I don’t sit in line ups at the Costco gas bar. Thanks again for getting the information out there with your videos 👍
Another high point is that you can charge the lightening at 19.2kW at home vs only 11.5kW for the Cybertruck. However, fortunate Europeans with 3-phase electric and EVs equipped with 415V onboard AC chargers are fueling up at whopping 22kW at home. Come on North America! Any EV with an above average size batteries should have an onboard 240V 80A 19.2kW AC charger so you can add 60% charge from 20% to 80% within just few hours when you’re in a hurry and don’t want to go to a fast charger. At 11kW, you’re looking at several hours of charge time on the bigger battery of the Cybertruck or Model X.
Excellent points! Thanks for adding to the conversation, Nick. The Lightning can't do that unless you install the Ford Charge Station Pro, which used to come free with the extended range but they dumped it for 2024, now costing $1,800 for the unit, a few more thousand to the electrician since it then needs the house upgraded to allow for the Intelligent Back-up Power feed to the home in power outages. So yeah, let's get our laggard North American butts in gear, and catch up to the Europeans!
@@truckedupevs Good point. I had to spend a couple grand total on the purchase and install of my 48A Tesla Universal Wall Connector. Most folks aren’t willing to do that.
Pet issue of mine. I have the Lightning Lariat which came with the Ford Pro charger, @ 80 amps or 19.2KW. The truck phone app has never indicated more 17.1KW being added to the truck. I have an additional Grizzl-E 80 amp charger at another location, same results. Also, in order to get the max charge of 80 amps, it requires a 100 amp dedicated breaker in the panel. Most homes have a maximum of 200 amps service for the entire house, plus no device on a home can use more than 80 amps by code. In short, very small slice of users can actually get the 80 amps to charge. The US standard will not allow 3 phase in residential use, only commercial. Also, any device that has a plug to provide power is limited to 40 amps max, which is 80% of the 50amp plug. We have a Tesla too, with a 48 amp wall connector. Installing these are in sand box.
@@garryrooks3413 that’s good feedback about your Lightening not getting the advertised 19kW charge rate. What does Ford say about it?? Side note, 19.2kW is peak 240V X 80A. 240V US is really 235V +-5V. So, real world charging is more like 234V X 79.99A = 18.7kW-ish. Not that it’s much consolation.
@@garryrooks3413 Yes, it's a valid point, Garry. It seems it's more of a marketing ploy in the inflating of the numbers. We have different standards in Canada, and 3-phase is an option, but I don't know of anyone getting the max #s. Still, I'm jealous because Ford dumped all of what was included before with an extended range, and now we have to pay a massive extra amount as a option. Goodbye to the 'free' Pro charger.
As someone who just recently bought a lightning, I went through a similar process of comparing all the trucks. I can't agree with you more on your assessment. The silverado was also 2nd in line for me but a couple more things that you didn't mention also bug me about it. It's a unibody frame, I just have no trust in that yet for trucks hauling/towing extreme loads. Maybe in the future, it will be proven good, but so far (cough, cough cybertruck) I'll stick with body on steel frame. another thing is no Apple Car Play which means relying on GM's poor software (in which they just fired 1000 employees of). and the last thing is GM's insistence in subscriptions for apps and services. Ford doesn't have any of that nickel and dimeing garbage. But like you, it came down to price. Although the range was better, 50% more Canadian with a lot less creature comforts and polish. My choice was easy, Lightning all the way.
Thanks as always for the great comment, Dar! I did cover all of those things but I had to delete them as my video was becoming a manifesto! Apple Carplay and Android Auto are hugely underrated pluses with this truck. For most functional applications, a unibody is a bad idea for the most part - insanely expensive as already proven with the Rivian. The Cybertruck might get away with it due to incredibly panel strength but time will tell. Silverado EV get s a single dent in that very thin panelling and it might be 2nd mortgage time....
Silverado has a full frame under the unibody. It is more of a hybrid construction. The BT1 frame is heavily based on the T1 frame under the current gas Silverado, but with battery packs incorporated as part of the structure.
@@TroySavary I get that the Silverado EV has frame type elements but it’s still unibody… ie. the vehicle relies on the body and in this case the battery for its structure. I don’t like unibody for light passenger cars that stay on road. Now it’s on super heavy trucks that haul and tow enormous weight. I don’t know if you ever seen how much trucks flex when stressed to the max on uneven roads with articulating wheels. I have…and it’s scary. Having your body and battery take on that stress is something I can’t wrap my head around. As I mentioned above, Maybe it’s fine. I am sure they have engineers a lot smarter than me to figure these things out. But as the buyer shelling out 100k, I know what I know, and I don’t want to be their guinea pig with tech that is not proven. Lets say that they worked that out and it’s a tank, as @truckedupevs alluded to, if you need to replace a body panel for some reason. you are basically hooped. What happens if you even get sneezed on during a minor fender bender accident. How will the adjuster/insurance know if the structure is compromised or not. I’ll tell you how, They will write it off. It’s too dangerous for them to guess if that tiny crease on the side is not a segment that takes the 10000lb trailer stress. As long as there are body on frame options for my trucks, its the only way I will go. I have a sneaky suspicion that Ford will also go the unibody way with their T3 next gen lightning. I hope not but it’s the way the industry is moving to cut costs. At least I’ll have my current lightning for many years and hopefully by that time some of these frames will either prove themselves or not. I’m sure at least one company will go back to the tried and true body on frame when they find out the warranty costs outweigh any savings they might eke out this way.
@@TroySavary Yes. I think many, however, are worried about that long single-stamped panel without cab/box body-on-frame. As unfortunately discovered the hard way by some Rivian buyers, getting damage on the back quarter and you're replacing the whole side panel, which several have already posted their invoice at $21k USD! Silverado will likely be in the same ballpark, I'm guessing.
I tend to agree but they pull some total winners out of the hat too. Although it had the battery issue from no fault of GM's (and why they won a multi-billion $ law suit), the Bolt has proven to be an incredibly affordable and reliable ev. My wife owns one and for the $, the range and functionality are great. And, unlike Tesla's so-called 'affordable ev, GM has most kept to its promise and kept the price down all those years as the Model 3 price went up and down like a yo-yo.. We'll see how their ev fleet performs with the Ultium packs, but dolar for dollar, the Lightning is simply a better purchase at this time. Thanks for the comment!
Great comparison. I see R1T’s and Silverados weekly here in Southern Ontario but I think you’re on the money with the biggest deciding factor…price! If that R1T was 20$K less I’d pull the trigger but for now Ford is moving units at a loss just to get them out there and create a customer base for their T3 etc down the road.
Well said. That's the thing. They are also getting their production infrastructure to a place where net balance above the red is within reach. It's tough to balance the trade-off when the mainstay of biz is legacy product. I would have been almost $30k more when all said and done on the Rivian.
Great video! I watched a UA-cam video comparing Rivian Lightning and Cyber and the Rivian made a very compelling case. I just cant with the Triangle lol. BUT...... I met a Rivian owner at a charging station one day back in May and he proceded to tell me about some of the isssues he already had . Body panels that were so far off that he brought the truck back in after just cpl weeks and they had it for like 6 weeks not to mention the dealership is the only one in a 50 mile (or more) radius and ...... I didnt mention it to him but I am a house painter so I notice paint lol and I saw some really bad orange peel effect without even trying and I didnt want him to see me noticing lol. Also he was an early recipient and he paid ALOT for it but he let me know the money wasnt a big deal for him. I have seen that Rivian has come down in price but the Lightning has come to DOWNRIGHT AFFORDABLE and arguably better priced than any of their trucks. I had been following the Lightning on UA-cam and such but the early pricing was beyond my affordability for 2 yrs and I gave up. Then one day I saw a dealer ad online and thought it was BS when i saw it so I had to call for the heck of it and that day I was test driving and buying the best vehicle Ive owned yet at 59 yrs old.The rebates/incentives are astonishing .The comfortable ride is also. The specs are good with Rivian but...... Im glad I have the 2023 XLT Extended Range!! I wasnt aware that the extended bed was only on the higher Chevy trims. That is a great option. If I was loaded my decision making may differ. But Im just REALLY glad Im in the Lightnning game. I dont have the heat pump in the 2023 so im interested to see what you experience in the not so distant future with the 2024. Range IS important. But Im managing it very easily and now with Tesla availability there is virtually NO range anxiety for me AT ALL.
I always appreciate your comments, and I enjoy when a viewer brings us along regarding their process and how they chose their EV truck. I am totally with you. I seriously would have had another model in my driveway had I stuck to my first intention (and Rivian would ease up on their buying restrictions), but there's just nothing out there with that much value for the price of a Lightning. I'm glad you mentioned the heat pump. I was very close to buying a new 23' Platinum trim out of the Okanagan that was so discounted it was in the low 80$ Cdn - $20k off the window sticker! - but I knew that for the channel, testing the heat pump in the winter would be valuable and informative for my community. Keep the comments comin'!
Service availability is key for me, I live in a small town in southern MN. So it’s between ford, stellantis and Chevy before dealerships are 40 mins away and not convenient. That Silverado EV is just so hard to get and the only impressive features it has is the battery size and mid gate. The only thing replacing my Lightning XLT SR in 2 years (when my lease is up) will be another Lightning with ER battery, in whatever trim is easiest to get, probably the Flash. Getting a SR battery was my only misstep in my first pick.
I didn't find my XLT SR a problem for the most part, as you've probably seen in my other videos, but I have plans for the channel that will push the truck to the limit, and the extra battery capacity became more necessary. I 100% agree with all of your assessments. Thanks for the comments and support, Amanda!
New sub. Love your stuff and am currently looking at picking up an XLT at AM Ford. With the employee pricing and double rebates I'm very intrigued by the $59k Lightning... I'll follow up with my decision. BTW I live Krestova and it's amazing to find such an informative EV truck channel that's LOCAL?!?! Great content.
Sorry! Just saw your comment now. Currently heading for the Yukon & signal has been 'dicey'. Thanks so much for the support! Let me know how it works out at AM Ford. Ask for Kelly. She's who I used.

I did make reservation for silverado EV & received a call from the dealership here in Vancouver saying i can pick up one but I had to back out because, you know..., PRICE!
I looked at the 4WT. I was actually surprised that the price was only a couple thousand more than the same truck in the USA. GM is really eating the exchange rate for customers.
@@TroySavary That's what really surprised me too when I filmed the Silverado EV video with Mike. He paid almost the same as the USD MSRP. I was truly impressed. Either GM is going aggressive on the Cdn market, or someone made a career-altering boo-boo and forgot to include exchange rates 🙂.
@@truckedupevs i saw Air Supply a couple months ago and lightning struck right as one of the band members was reading a poem on the mic and said I am God. Crazy
Liked and subscribed. Your Rivian critique was, however, harsh. They can't service what they're too small to get to. The "zip code effect" we call in the states may be at play, where Rivian sees a yuppy demographic, but still, to survive the company has to go where its customers densely populate. I liked your practical take. Availability, price, range, efficiency separate these trucks by a wide margin (the BYD Shark w/b even wider). You needed yours soon perhaps, but also the Ramcharger and likely to come, other, EREV trucks sound exactly like they may suit. For me, the Flash ranks high but Ford hasn't been great when it comes to supporting electrification. I'd rather the same truck from a different maker, but, again, the differences among trucks are so vast it tends up a practical decision. Well done!
What a great post! Thank you for subscribing! Yes, it was harsh, but here's to my point. I just met a wonderful gentleman & his wife in Yoho National Park, BC, travelling in his newly-acquired Rivian R1T he waited over 4 years to purchase because there was no Rivian centre in Montreal. Once there was, he bought & proceed to drive across Canada into some more remote locations, which is what all Rivian owners will do, since that's how Rivian packaged & marketed it. You're right. It's not fair to judge such a limited start-up trying to do big things - but this limited sales envelop will not only hurt their sales, which they now need desperately, the logistics won't work anyway. When the control arm or suspension fails, it will be up a mountain pass in the middle of nowhere, and not in downtown L.A. There. My somewhat weak argument for being a dick 😜😀
Man, I'm not nagging, just trying to help retain subscribers. You have so many good things to say without the need to over leverage frequent camera cuts and effects and antics. I think Ford has done a great job with the Lightening and I’m sure you’ll be happy with your decision. I’m a little concerned with Ford though as they’ve backed off EVs and Chevy and Tesla do seems like they are getting some momentum going. The Cybertruck is supposed to be the top selling EV truck in the US right now and well, in spite of all of the technological advancements, I don’t get it. It’s going to be interesting to see what the EV truck landscape is like in a year.
I totally agree! I've got my fingers crossed that we'll have more competition and better adoption in the US/Canada, as it needs to catch up with Europe and China.
Cybertruck is top based on fanboy guesses, since Tesla is hiding the sales number in the "other" category along with Model S and X. If tge numbers were actually good, Tesla would be loudly announcing them. But. assume it did beat Lightning for a month or two. That is with 5 years of hype and pent up demand, and supposedly 2 million reservations, vs a truck that has been available for a couple years. We will see if Cybertruck sales continue to rise, or if the demand has been met.
Great video. Real useful details you provide with the specs on the various trucks and trims. Do you have to be a Ford employee to get the employee discount?
Thanks for the feedback. No, you don't. If that were the case, I couldn't have purchased it for the price that I did (and would likely have made more of an effort to see if I could have bought the Silverado EV RST). Every now and then Ford does an 'Employee Pricing Event' and they offer customers the same prices that Ford employees get. It's never shown up on EVs before, so I was blown away when I found out the Lightning qualified. I have no affiliation with Ford, nor do I receive any kind of financial benefit, incentive, or sponsorship. UA-cam requires that anything like that has to be disclosed. The advertisements are still running on UA-cam (that's how I found out), but I have no idea how long Ford does the promo. Lastly, I'm in Canada so not sure if the same is offered in other countries. I hope this helps.
Thanks Paul! Yeah, I just my own unscientific test at a 200kw Chevron station, and it hit 173 but stayed there for about 8 minutes. The nice thing was how gradually it slowed the rate to 80%, where it continued at 60kw.
Maaaaaan, it's so unfortunate about the Rivian availability. I absolutely love mine, and with the Gen2, the heat pump would have checked all of your boxes.
I know, right?! It's a sweet machine. I was truly hoping to have it in my driveway, even with the close to $30k spread between the trim and features I wanted and the Flash. Oh well, I'll just have to 'slum it' with my Ford ;-).
If you watched the batteries and battery structure on the Hummer and Silverado EV you'd look elsewhere. They are so complex and heavy that would be a nightmare to service later on as the vehicle ages. Otherwise, I like both over the CT and Flash.
Yup. Munro Live did a great tear-down, I think on the Hummer, and the whole Ultium system is another catastrophe waiting to happen. Brute force is typical of GM. But that kind of weight has consequences. Thanks for commenting!
Or maybe they just thought it was a good idea to build a big, beefy case around something that combusts when punctured, considering it is an off road vehicle. That way, it won't go up in flames, when a rock strikes the bottom, like a Cybertruck already has.
@@TroySavary The Lightning put armour plating the entire length of the underbody, including over the two motors, with a spacing gap between it and the battery pack, which is also encased in a tough casing. GM's pack is pretty complex and has a lot of potential fail points, something that concerns me. I've already had two individuals comment on my channel about their batteries faulting and awaiting a full pack replacement.
@@truckedupevs Yes, the Lightning is adequately protected. I was comparing to the meager shielding of the Cybertruck, which has already proven too flimsy for off roading.
Interesting perspective. I’d lost interest in the Lightning, as everything else seems to have surpassed it in terms of range, but now that Ford seems to have realized there aren’t hundreds of thousands of actual buyers out there, they might be more realistic on pricing.
I know it sounds dumb but one of the things I love about our model Y is the phone as a key, my wife used my second key fob to my bolt once and promptly lost it, we don't worry about that with the Y. In the next couple of years I'm looking at a big SUV or truck to replace my bolt (camping with the Y is a little cramped with everything we need for the family) . How has phone as a key come along on the Ford? I know the early ones had issues, has the 2024 gotten better?
I can easily start, lock, unlock and charge my vehicle from the phone. But Ford still packages Phone As a Key along with other FordPass app features as trim level specific, only available in Lariat & Platinum trims, which is really stupid and lacking how this in every trim would make all their EV models more appealing. Great input. Thanks for the comment!
I have the lightning lariat and have phone as a key option. It works excellent and for the rare time my phone dies, it has a outdoor keypad and password to drive the truck. Ford has it figured out.
@@stevebondy5404 Yes, Lariat & Platinum trims have it. Flash & down don't, which has to be one of the single-most dumbest moves by Ford. It's such a great app feature, and everyone who has it raves about it because it's so good - some say better than Tesla - with better security. Thus, it should be ubiquitous on all trims. To throttle it on 3 trims for what purpose??! I mean, what division genius thought that was somehow smart?? The app should be expanded and then pumped as a superior selling feature to compete with everyone else. If Ford thinks that having an extra option on a phone app will make ppl spend $20k more on a trim, it needs to give its frickin' corporate head a shake. Thanks for speaking to how well it works. I might put out a short on this 🙂
Is your truck a '25? My understanding is that the spare tire is now an add-on extra and not standard, which I think sucks. Questions related to that -- is that on all F-150's or just the Lightning; and how much is it extra to add the spare? Also, doesn't surprise me, but there has been no word of NACS for '25. Probably won't show up until '26....maybe. Anyway, my family loves our '23 Lightning; still waiting on the free NACS adapter that seems to be forever delayed.
Mine is a '24 and has the spare tire. The NACS is no fault of Ford's, other than trusting Elon Musk to hold up his end of the bargain. Right after getting all the autos to commit to NACS, he fired the entire NACS adapter team, along with the entire supercharger team, pushing back the delivery - which Musk had insisted Tesla would produce in-house - back by months, if not years. Why anyone likes him is beyond me.
I’ve been thinking about the Flash for a while. I did test drive the Silverado and to me, it had a weird feel that I didn’t like. Some combo of hood shape & visibility that just didn’t feel right. The screen interface design felt a little weird too.
I'm with you, Bren. I think it's visibility over the hood bulge. I can't figure out my depth. The ride feel is incredibly smooth but waaaay too bouncy on those air bags the moment something gets uneven.
@trucked up evs that cybertruck frame break if because he landed the back part of the truck on a solid concrete block & damaged it before attempting to tow. Though you should know incase you still think that it broke because of towing :)
There have been three reports of frame breaks under benign conditions, unlike his. What Whistlin Diesel did was extreme, of course - all of his video are - but I suggest you see Part 2, his follow-up. It vs. the F-150 becomes far more apparent. I have always had an issue with an aluminum mega-casting directly attaching to a hitch bracket. This will haunt the CT in the future.
@@truckedupevs sure, it its a real issue i hope tesla folks take notice of it & address it in their next iterations & looking forward to your upcoming trip! Congratulations on Flash ownership.
So that makes it okay? You know people take their CT rock crawling and hit the back part of the truck... Then they go out and pull a 12000 lb trailer down mountain roads to camp. These frame breaks are happening to NEW trucks. What happens after 5 years of repeatedly doing what I said above. A unibody with aluminum frame is a recipe for disaster and shows Tesla's inexperience of what matters in a truck. The lightning on the other hand is body on fully boxed steel frame. It can be bent under extreme circumstances but it will never break. Unfortunately, there will be lives lost if the CT is not reclassified to no towing allowed.
11:12 ...with the possibility of the bumper being ripped off due to a pothole. I am an EV fan and had a Cybertruck pre-order. Until WhistlinDiesel's video. I guess a Ford Lightning is somewhere in my distant future. Very distant atm...
@@TNRVG Hi Billy. Thanks for the comments. Great fishing channel! Just subscribed. So what happened in a few seconds? You've got me curious. Also, Whistlin' Diesel beat the living crap out of the Cybertruck and in many tests it did better than the Ford. But on a follow-up video, he exposed Ford's hitch to 10x the abuse - and it held. I'm of the mind that I'll look again at the CT in a year or two, once things get sorted out, but there's too many unknowns. Ford's been at this for a while. 🙂
Thanks for another great video. I am considering a Flash but can’t bring myself to giving up the $9000 rebate in BC over the Pro. If I configure both the Flash and the Pro as desire, there is a $21,000 difference in price. I get the range, power and bling but $21,000 is hard to get over. Am I missing something?
Thanks for the comment Stan. Yes you're missing what you've already noted: 150km of range in addition to all the bells and whistles, better interior, full pro power onboard, and piles of others. The Flash is right below the Lariat ER for a lot less. The Pro does not give you the option of the extended range in Canada. If it did, it would exceed the qualifying cap for the incentive. Right now, only the SR Pro & XLT qualify both provincially and federally. Also, if Ford's employee pricing is still in effect, I don't think the spread is $21k, but I could be wrong. As you likely know from my video on the Pro, it was my 1st choice originally. Dollar for dollar, nothing even comes close, but it has its limitations. If those aren't an issue for you, and if you can get it that low on the $ side, I'd jump all over it myself if I didn't need the range for the channel antics.
@@truckedupevs Thanks! The $21,000 comes directly from Ford’s build pricing. This is after tax and rebates. Essentially $9,000 in rebates plus $12,000 difference in truck price. Wish we could get the Pro with ER battery in Canada like in other markets.
I agree. I think we're almost there. Ford is bleeding money, but theat the way it has to go fro Legacy if they keep trying to juggle multiple propulsion divisions. I hope they stop back-pedaling and 'hit the gas' on the T3 Project, but I'm guessing we won't see the refresh/replacement until 2027.
And my apologies for being too dense to 'get it'. I get a LOT of comments filled with 'ev truck sales are in the toilet' FUD, along with vitriol and a lot of expletives... Thank goodness YT catches most of it. I'll try lightening up a little :-).
Absolutely. @@tannermcnabb4836 I bought mine September 20th and I love it. Rn ford sends you home a bigger charger and I wish I would have waited a little bit longer for the charger to come with my purchase but overall it’s a great truck & great for the in town driving I do
I'm in Ontario and the ram looks good (I currently own one with ramboxes omg awesome) and I really like rivian the extra space for stuff with the gear tunnel etc would be perfect but I will have to see what comes up soon with ram and ford
The Ram REV is going to be a major player, I'm thinking. With things going the way they are at Stellantis, however, I'm doubtful we'll see either the REV or Ramcharger make it to market within 12 months.
I understand your reason for going for a Ford Lightning Flash, but I think you botched the name. Thor is okay, but you really should have gone with "Jumping Jack".
I don't think the cybertruck deserves to be on the list until they get rid of the foundation series. Then we will see the real pricing. Tesla is committed to scale, and have a chance to make money on this thing. I like the lightning and is on top of my list so far to replace my ranger, but how long is it going to be around if they can't make a profit? Same is true for the other ev trucks. I was hoping that a more bare bones ev truck would come out of China and push the envelope in terms of making manufacturers here get back to basics. Tesla is especially guilty of this. Can I get a basic truck please with range, towing capacity, payload, but not some other of needless features? I get into a truck dirty, with a sticky bee suit on sometimes when I happen the piss off the little buggers at one of my bee sites. BTW, what was the depreciation on Egor. A used lightning, when they become available is my preferred vehicle.
All good points. I think the approach Ford is taking is working. Take the losses now, let the profitable divisions pay for the pain, and be ahead for the long haul. It's working, by the way, and once Tennessee goes fully live, I think Ford is there. The Lightning's not going anywhere as sales continue to outpace other models, and costs are finally levelling and coming down. I think EV trucks are here to stay, but the transition for Legacy Auto will certainly produce casualties. Thanks for the great comment, Leroy!
I guess you struggle with nuance. Did you miss the part where I mentioned I tried to buy it? Great towing and off-road creds. Terrible truck re: utility applications, pathetically small bed, stupid unibody panelling (the reason work trucks have avoided such for over a century), that when damaged will cost tens of thousands (and it WILL get damaged), and openly advertised as a play truck by Rivian on their own website. I guess you didn't think through your poor quoting of Mark Twain/Lincoln before posting. Thanks for letting everyone know.
I think the Rivian R1T is amazing. I drove one in Vancouver at the Fully Charged event last year. The purchasing system however is stupid. I get why they're doing it - to be within reasonable distance to service them - but the owners are going to take these things into god-knows-where and get them stuck, hung up, drained of power and disabled with flats - and it won't make an ounce of difference to their 'purchasing zones', which are really small compared to the country overall. Rivian has some work to do on this front. Thanks for the comment, Kevin!
@@truckedupevs To be fair, that's a more responsible approach. Another reason I went with a lightning is that Ford dealers/service are everywhere. A lot of people buying trucks, such as myself, use them for work. Time is money. If I need service, I need it here and now. I know you did mention this in your video but a lot of people out there don't think about this at all when purchasing. Either that or they don't put any value on it until that oh oh moment 2000km away from a service spot. Then all hell breaks lose and you get the "what do you mean you can't come get my truck". Rivian is basically saying (without saying) "we don't want to ruin your experience and our reputation by you being too far from a service area, nor do we want to pay huge towing expenses to get you here." I actually appreciate this over Tesla's approach of buy buy buy, oh you need service. I think we have an opening a month from now in one of these 3 cities.
@@darpompie4354 Good point, and yes, I agree with it, but none of these Rivian owners are going to stay in their geographic bubble. The breakdowns and service requirements will likely be up a mountain behind where I live 🙂 It's a thoughtful strategy, and respectful of a client, but impractical in real-world use cases. And I'm just being grumpy and pouty because I couldn't get one.
@@truckedupevs LOL...at the grumpyness. Yeah, you are right about people driving outside their geographic bubble and I am sure they will take care of those that do. I think it's more about reducing those expenses rather than eliminating them. Something about stats stats stats. Most people drive only so many miles away from home making the odds of a failure near their home most likely. Hey... you can always move to get a new truck but please leave my name out of it when you tell the wife why you're moving.
Lol 😂 you need to buy land (no house) in American 🇺🇸 And put a mailbox 📬 on it 🫡 then you can buy a truck in Canada 🇨🇦 lol 😂 just tell the Canadian you have a place in America 🇺🇸 lol 😂 you can but land for thousands of dollars in desert 🏜
It's already been tested. Seems to operate more efficiently than resistive heating to about -10F & then starts to level out to an equal energy draw. Keep in mind that unlike heat pumps in a home, these have a heat variable from the batteries and coolant rather than exclusively beholden to the outside atmosphere. I've now owned both heating methods, so I'll be able to look at my #s once we get down to those cold snaps this winter. Should be interesting! Thanks for the comment!
That's kind of a rhetorical question. I could spin that around on anyone and ask, "Did you really need an ICE truck? Of did you just have big-truck-diesel-envy to drive back and forth to the grocery store and Walmart?" It's a superior vehicle in many respects, and proved much cheaper to operate for my business. I went from $160 for the PowerStroke, to $105 for the 2007 Ranger, to $10 for the Lightning. It's a no-brainer for small business. And regarding my old ICE truck age and condition, here: ua-cam.com/video/y1em9kLdRuM/v-deo.html
I average higher-than-average click-through rates and viewer retention for auto related channels, especially for a new one competing against established channels with millions of subs, and wonderful community support for a young channel - so yeah, no. You 'should' avoid using 'should' and 'shouldn't' with people.
@@ChrisWhalenCPA Actually, it is. I suggest using this time to critique your own channel. With half the subscribers, taking over 18 years to get there, 1/5 the view rate, 3x the # of videos, and a terrible retention rate, I'm going to say that your advice isn't quite what I'm looking for. And, just for you: 😵💫😋🤡
That's a pretty broad, rather meaningless statement. It's like saying motorcycles are pointless because they have only two wheels. Almost 90% of all truck owners in North America have no use for a diesel, or anything beyond 40 miles a day, which makes an EV truck a perfect use case, never using fast chargers because everyone is waking up to a full truck every morning. Over 85% of owners of pickups never tow or haul, and the average American drives more than 200 miles less than four times a year. So yeah, no. Diesels are absolutely pointless beyond work applications, which most diesel pickups are never used for.
@@truckedupevs I've owned a Tesla Model 3 for 6 years and waited 4 years to get a Cybertruck but due to its limited range decided to buy a Cummins diesel for half the price of a Cybertruck. You do realize that at least with Teslas you're not supposed to go below 20% battery on a regular basis and also you're not supposed to charge past 80% either, right? So your effective range is only 60% of it's "EPA estimated" range. I definitely drive more than 40 miles a day on most weekends and having to spend time at a charging station is not my idea of a fun weekend. I guess if I never left my urban area an electric truck would work just fine. Oh well, to each his own.
@@user-qp4ox8le5o Sounds like a diesel makes a lot of sense for your application. As far as your EPA assessment, not exactly. The battery chemistry determines the charging cycle. LFPs can e charged to 100% consistently. NMCs should not be charged CONSISTENTLY to 100% or drained below 10~20%, but there is no problem in doing so when required, which is how they're designed, and fits with most driving habits. I ran a diesel with the company I worked for. We averaged $160 Cdn per 500 km (300miles). I then ran a Ranger with my own company for six years, averaging $120 for the same mileage. When I switched to the Lightning XLT, that dropped to $12. Pure economics for me. Maintenance on those ICE trucks was costly. I have yet to pay a dime for my EV trucks other than tire rotations. Like you said, to each his own.
Not a thoughtful statement. Local tradesmen find the range to be more than adequate, and local business owners with small fleets love the convenience and reduced service needs as well as 75% fuel savings cost over a bloated, loud, polluting cousin of the coal-fired steam engine, and which hauls better than any Cummins ever could. That's why diesel locomotives only use the diesel engine to run a generator which powers the 4 electric motors that pull the train.
Thank you, Ted! I watched your video on the Prince George Trailer trip. So disappointing to hear the truck/trailer got such poor range. When did you go? The reason I ask is so many superchargers just came online in the past two weeks and so many more are about to get fired up. As I drove to Watson Lake, Yukon, I saw so many BC Hydro DCFC with truck/trailer pull-throughs, but many weren't operational yet. We're not there yet, but close - and the Lightning is certainly limited compared to say, Mike's Silverado EV. However, I now have a NACS adapter and that's changing access. Also, three Supercharger locations have added truck/trailer pull-throughs. I find with my new Flash that it shows a 40% loss when hooked up and all the specs of the trailer length are inputted. I tested it on a friend's 24' travel trailer before leaving on my trip but I didn't drive it out of the city. In Alberta heading south. Chat soon!
@truckedupevs honestly, the last choice would be an f-150 and the hummer. First choice Tesla, second rivian, and 3rd Silverado
@@blakeogeris2494 Really? Tell me more.
It's a great all-purpose truck -and happens to be electric.
Wow! Thank you, Joseph. Glad you enjoyed it!
Enjoy that sweeeeet ride!
The Lightning Flash is a really solid spec and the pricing is pretty incredible considering everything it offers.
Well said. I actually had a list near the end of the video of just how much one gets with the trim. It made the video far too loooooong! 🙂
Too bad for that theory that a few other Cybertrucks snapped during everyday towing.
Great comparison and analysis...and thank you for the metric conversions for those of us who still can't do the math and refuse to convert:)
Thanks, Kathy! Yeah, being Canadian I use a mix of metric and imperial and then wonder why everyone is confused 🙂
New sub!
That's awesome. Thanks Lori for the support!
RST is around $100k in the states. Ford for the WIN !
They're both very cool trucks.
@@truckedupevs Definitely, from what I'm seeing.
Well said!
As always, thank you so much for the kind words and the awesome support from a fellow BC EV owner!
Thanks so much for going through the rundown on your decision
As always, thanks for watching!
Good video. Yes. Truck things are important to truck people.
Thanks Dave!
You were smart in staying away from most GM products.
Thanks!
Wow! Thank you, Richard! It's going right into the trip budget! So grateful for your support.
I would have been almost $30k more when all said and done on the Rivian.
also, looking forward to your efficiency numbers on the cross Canada trip.
I am waiting for the f150 lightning woth the new lithium iron phosphate chemistry . It is gonna be a robust safe and super reliable battery .
LFPs will be a game changer but lower density means less range - but no thermal issue potential and charging to 100% all the time is pretty nice.
Agree….Flash is the way to go.
Thanks!

What trim were they offering you? That's good that they're actually calling ppl. Thanks for the comments, by the way!
Me too. It's a beautiful truck...but the price!!!
That "Like a rock" isn't just a jingle. It's a full song by Bob Seger. Heard it on the radio a while back. The full song is nice.

Real world charging on the 2024 Flash has been documented all the way to 175kw. It does not stay there too long, but the charging curve is not bad.
58k?!?! that is great!!
Interesting perspective. I’d lost interest in the Lightning, as everything else seems to have surpassed it in terms of range, but now that Ford seems to have realized there aren’t hundreds of thousands of actual buyers out there, they might be more realistic on pricing.
That's what I found. Still, it was a tough choice, and some of that decision-making was made for me. We'll see what I'm driving in a year or two... 🙂
@stevebondy5404 I knew about tue exterior code, I didn't realize it had pin to drive too... that is awesome
I might put out a short on this 🙂
The face on the video preview tho
You're in Castlegar?! I'm in trail!
Hey neighbour!

Cybertruck will never be durable. It is a cast aluminum unibody. Also, the control arms are severely undersized for the weight of the vehicle.
@@TroySavary It seems that is proving the case.

@@truckedupevs its fine I see a lot anti ev nonsense in video comments as well most of the arguments make no sense what so ever
Hey, thinking to get a lightning in the flash trim. BC based as well as you are. Would love to pick your brain about this
Absolutely. It's after midnight where I am now and I need to crash, but ask away - I just might not get back to you for a day or two as I am currently in post-production hell while also shooting the next episode 🙂

@@tannermcnabb4836 I bought mine September 20th and I love it. Rn ford sends you home a bigger charger and I wish I would have waited a little bit longer for the charger to come with my purchase but overall it’s a great truck & great for the in town driving I do
I'm waiting to see how the Ram does when it hits the dealerships
Haha! Everyone's a critic!
(but yeah, that would have been wittier)
Nice to hear from you, as always!
Rivian is a “play truck”. It’s better to be thought ignorant than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt”
I have seen two Rivians here in Halifax. They definitely look better than teslas cyberfail.
@@darpompie4354 Hahaha! She's been given your contact info....
Oops, Canada just stopped allowing Tesla to sell cars there!
Oh? News please.
We'll see how that heat pump does in -20 F
It's already been tested. Seems to operate more efficiently than resistive heating to about -10F & then starts to level out to an equal energy draw. Keep in mind that unlike heat pumps in a home, these have a heat variable from the batteries and coolant rather than exclusively beholden to the outside atmosphere.
I've now owned both heating methods, so I'll be able to look at my #s once we get down to those cold snaps this winter.
Should be interesting!
Thanks for the comment!
Did you really need a electric truck. You did not say how old and how many miles on your ice truck. Were you electric envey and just wanted one?
That's kind of a rhetorical question. I could spin that around on anyone and ask, "Did you really need an ICE truck? Of did you just have big-truck-diesel-envy to drive back and forth to the grocery store and Walmart?"
It's a superior vehicle in many respects, and proved much cheaper to operate for my business. I went from $160 for the PowerStroke, to $105 for the 2007 Ranger, to $10 for the Lightning. It's a no-brainer for small business.
And regarding my old ICE truck age and condition, here: ua-cam.com/video/y1em9kLdRuM/v-deo.html
ICE truck owners are flipping their trucks on an average of every 3 years, so there's also that.
Lol
You shouldn't have a goofy face in your thumbnail.
I average higher-than-average click-through rates and viewer retention for auto related channels, especially for a new one competing against established channels with millions of subs, and wonderful community support for a young channel - so yeah, no.
You 'should' avoid using 'should' and 'shouldn't' with people.
@@truckedupevs It's not worth it.
And, just for you: 😵💫😋🤡
It seemed very Rodney Dangerfield-esque.

Electric trucks are pointless, the range just isn’t there when you factor in 20% to 80% state of charge operation. Just get a Cummins diesel.
99.9% of my driving is less than 50 miles a day. EV makes more sense than diesel for me
Not a thoughtful statement.
Thanks!
