  • I explored the Blue Ridge train tunnel at Rockfish Gap near Crozet and Waynesboro, Virginia. Built in 1858 before the invention of dynamite. It has been turned into a walking trail.

Thank you. The tunnel actually goes under the Appalachian Trail. It also goes under Interstate 64 and HWY 250. The AT is probably about half mile or so from both the east and west tunnel entrances. I'm not sure how easy it would be to get to one of the entrances from the AT, though. Might have to cross some roads and jump some fences.

No way!!! Its crazy to know i walked right over that goodness and didn't even know it!! How fascinating... btw, did you try drinking any of that gushing spring water?
Also wondering if you attended ASU, and if so, did you ever brush elbows with Eustace Conway? ...I'm actually working in Banner Elk and Blowing Rock these days;)@@DarkStoneCastle

Nah, didn’t drink any. Yes, I went to ASU back in 1987 for a few years and loved it. That name doesn’t ring a bell. Banner Elk and Blowing Rock….hell, the whole area is awesome!!!

How long is the tunnel part of the hike?
