Back in about September of 1996 my brother Warren, along with our friend Zeb Huntleigh and I had been hiking the Gap and started through this tunnel, making our way through about 3/4 and heard the train coming through the other end. Needless to say we were scared shitless and started picking up the pace real quick like. Warren and I had just reached the opening end and shot out like double time, having just made it to safety on the side of the tracks and looked back to see Zeb clinging to the front of the big engine hanging on for life. Tossing his backpack and jumping off the slow mover unhurt and very relieved to be ok, we couldn't help but just sit down and laugh the rest of the afternoon. Very damned scary I tell you.
I can see a rather nasty but surviveable collision happening given the low speeds. The real problem is the cars of the train blocking your escape and the locomotives catching fire after colliding.
You’d have a hell of a bigger problem if you saw another headlight on a single main going through opposite direction. A train crew, and a dispatcher are all losing their jobs if there’s no collision
@@matthewwilson5019 it’s also your responsibility to watch for Incorrect signals, switches being thrown incorrectly, etc. if there’s a train on the other side of you, the signals reflect that. If you run into a train, you’re just as much at fault for not doing your job.
That is a very weird tunnel. It starts with brickwork, and then suddenly changes into this weird concrete spiked wall design, and then finally, it turns into a cave! It goes through the designs again at odd points.
When the rock is good, it doesn't need a lining. Where it was fractured the original architects would have used brick to support the tunnel. I'm guessing the metal structures are retro-fits where either the rock or brick has weakened, and making a new tunnel to modern dimensions was deemed too expensive.
It's not a cave - it is man-made. In the unlined sections you can see the "cupping" every few feet which was formed by successive dynamite blasts. You see the same thing in mine tunnels from the old days. The tunnel is so small because they chose to do the minimum amount of blasting/mucking necessary. They just wanted something barely big enough to get a train through. This was long before safety became a big concern in industry.

Sounds like a hit at 3:39. Tunnel has a slow order for sure. For those who don't know, track is always changing. Freshly tamped track is smooth as glass, in a tunnel the track bed moves sometimes because water flow or heavy trains, or both. You may clear one day and not the next. Maarten Lord I work on trains, around them, in them. Solenoids and valves don't sound like a sledge hammer unless they just broke. It it really that hard for you to think that there may be some possibility that it hit?
Again, the train hits the walls almost every time the train passes through the tunnel. Ground conditions, load distribution, etc.. cause the train to lean slightly to one side or the other. This causes the train to impact the wall. Do you just go around calling people a liar for fun, or are you just another troll ?
Mca0824, Thank you so much for posting this! That was scary, courageous and fascinating all at once. Takes a lot of bravery to do that whether for work or fun. My hat is off to anyone who could do this.
This I located in Cowan, Tennessee. I had been up there before, prior to CSX taking ownership of the property. You used to be able to go up top and see the tops of the old tunnel vents, from back when they used to run steam engines. Train operators will now call the police if they catch you walking or riding on the railroad bed, making your way up. Travel at your own risk.
4 years later I get it recommended again and yet again I watch it. So what do I have to say this time..... well ladies and gentlemen, that s train is the train everyone talks about, that right it's the one way ticket to hell.
Being a railroad, tunnel technology, geology (little bit) fan, I notice the tunnel goes through soft and hard sections of the mountain: some finished without cement / concrete while others had to be steel-beam reinforced. Also noticed the rail bed is of slab concrete. So some improvements have apparently been done. It is a normal design for tunnels to have slight inclines toward the center so that water naturally drains out to both ends. But it is not good to have very tight clearance to have "now-oversized" trains to go through. It's best to rebore the tunnel with NATM method.
Dont take this personally, but I never want to watch this video again! It felt like the tunnel was getting smaller and smaller. A real Alice In Wonderland rabbit hole.

I bet you it was never thought to have a full size train go through there. It looks like it was made for railway cars that 2 people pump up & down. Just a guess.
I live in Middlesboro Kentucky which is like 10 minutes away from the gap and this tunnel I’ve been here many of times never thought it was that long kinda glad I never walked it lol but the opening is honestly pretty big it was just the darkness and the position of the camera my opinion
"Ok Larry we're gonna make the poor bastards go through a couple a miles through the mountain... Oh and uh... Make sure its really narrow. Pucker factor 8.5 narrow."
I don't know why this video has so many thumbs down. It's very interesting as is the written info. Maybe if the uploader hadn't put "hits wall" in the title there wouldn't be the thumbs down tally. The train doesn't hit the wall but does brush the tunnel roof a few time (eg., 02:50). But it must be "scary" to go through this super tight squeeze. Good video.
I would not have put that in the title except for the fact that the train hit the rocks. My brother recorded this video and told me about going through this tunnel and the train hitting the walls as it passes through. I think the video is a great view of a side of life that most people would never get a chance to see.
this is up my way. there a a grade to it as well. I used to go down to the tunnel every Thursday about 730 or so to watch the train come by. I've been in the tunnel too, but no more than 10 feet.
Angela Partin you could not pay me enough to even get within two feet of that gateway to madness between the small confining walls and that creepy darkness nope just nope
My dad and papaw were train engineers mostly working out of the Decoursey yards in Latonia, KY, Queensgate in Cincinnati and whatever they are named in the Corbin, KY area. They have been on some super high trestles, which freaks me out, and some creepy tunnels. I bet they have been thru this tunnel. Papaw is no longer with us but I'm about to call my dad to ask if he's been in this one. Thank you for sharing this video. I'm excited to talk to him about it! Update: My dad didn't usually run that line but did once and went thru that tunnel. He wasn't the engineer which is standard because they would leave that job to someone familiar with it. One interesting thing he said is in 1 line tunnels when running the train fast the air displacement pushes air out the other end and you can see the dirts and leaves being blown. Pretty cool and something I never thought of. A tunnel like this is unique since most have at least enough room for a service truck to enter to make repairs to a train if need be.
You can walk out from the head end if it derailed. Having been involved in an alleged smoke inhalation case I know from the engineering studies we had done by the engineering firm who did the Chunnel that the smoke flows upward and back as the train moves. The smoke flows backwards as the train pushes air to the rear.
Yup, that's a hit at 3:39. It could have been dangerous. Man the tunnel is like dig to fit size. Hope it can be altered or something. Too damn risky for a freight train or just the engine locomotive to pass through.
@@mca0824 That's true and considering the track keeps shifting due to weather conditions, will not be surprised if the scrapes get heavier. Subscribed, found your uploads to be quite interesting. Keep the content flowing.
He beat me to it! That's what I was gonna ask. Longest damned mile I (hope!) I never have to see. One mile. Seemed more like Plus 2, Minus nothin'...!☺
The engines have doors that go out to a catwalk surrounding the locomotive, so you will be able to escape down the tracks. I can't even imagine a train being able to fast enough through this tunnel to cause more than a minor derailment. I would not want to put this to the test as this is a very long and narrow tunnel, and the smoke+and fire have no where to go except twards the ends. Even minor derailments can sometimes lead to fires.
Can you imagine digging that out a hundred yrs ago with oil lamps.

Creative_Zach Gaming ...not to mention: where exactly are u escaping to???
CRlocoman1989 lol ikr
CRlocoman1989 escaping to death
I'm guessing shut down and walk out the tunnel. he did come out the tunnel so walking out seems plausible.
They couldn't pay me enough.
golf-n-guns yaah!same hear.
golf-n-guns I'm sure they don't pay that engineer enough.
lol I love trains. i would, but for me that would be working for the electric company(lineman). They could pay me enough.
couldn't
I bet you it was never thought to have a full size train go through there. It looks like it was made for railway cars that 2 people pump up & down. Just a guess.
No
I live in Middlesboro Kentucky which is like 10 minutes away from the gap and this tunnel I’ve been here many of times never thought it was that long kinda glad I never walked it lol but the opening is honestly pretty big it was just the darkness and the position of the camera my opinion
My girl friend left me for this train 💔
Tell her the train is currently exploring other tunnels. Maybe she will return. LOL
Roasting You 2017 you're stupid
Michael or not
HI Roasting You 2017
May be your Tunnel Boring Machine Tool is worn out. That's why she left.
Michael will it explore her tunnel? (Ok thats a little to edgy)
all I can say is, that's one of the creepiest things I've ever seen. I'll be having nightmares about that the rest of my life
Be sure to watch it again before bed time. That helps you forget about it. Good night.
Michael I just did. I think I need therapy now
Ok, have a seat on the couch and tell us all about it. lol
Rickster Hey... Your profile picture is Simon's Cat!
the GOOPER yea I gotta soft spot for kitties. That one's a cutie!
Man, watching that with no sound got my anxiety going.
"Ok Larry we're gonna make the poor bastards go through a couple a miles through the mountain... Oh and uh... Make sure its really narrow. Pucker factor 8.5 narrow."
Appears the line owners, need to do some tunnel updating.
James Edmond uuuuhhhh
NS did when they leased it from CSX
Where exactly did this “hit” occur. Kinda click bait to watch this.
It doesn't hit the wall...that would be an operating incident and the engineer would bring the train to a stop
Alan Kuhlwilm .... TROLL, TROLL, TROLL, TROLL. Now move on. Nothing else to see here.
Michael
Could the down votes come from power hungry imatures that are jealous?
joshron99 It got so many dislikes that the uploader had to disable likes...
That's a snug fit
Great video
Thank you.
Mark Schenher makes my pants look loose
That's what she always says
This sure can make you claustrophobic!
I like the part where nothing happens on video
So that's what a colonoscopy looks like.
only if your 85
I would hope that my colonoscopy doesn't have iron rings in the middle!
pretty much
Now you know how a turd feels.
Feeling claustrophobic
Thats some video, good footage
Thank you.
this is up my way. there a a grade to it as well.
Feeling claustrophobic just looking at a video of going through that tunnel.
That’s cooln
Hard to believe this tunnel is still used. Beside the too narrow walls it has no lighting. Also looks like it is not maintained at all.
Dianne Linam Train tunnels usually don't have lighting, except for subway tunnels, and some of those don't have lighting either.
No lighting? There was one on the front of the train wasn't there?
Dianne Linam No room for lighting. No money for maintenance.
why is this tunnel even allowed to be used...
Still in use.
You can walk out from the head end if it derailed. Having been involved in an alleged smoke inhalation case I know from the engineering studies we had done by the engineering firm who did the Chunnel that the smoke flows upward and back as the train moves. The smoke flows backwards as the train pushes air to the rear.
Train bros, I would HATE to have to perform track maintenance on this scary beast of a tunnel. I would quit lol. Not
WOW!! That is SERIOUS!
People have died in this tunnel. So I have heard. Thanks for watching and commenting.
How so? That makes it that much more creepy.
Corey Kesler UP makes the crew have respirators with the crew going through tunnels
Oh okay, okay...smart move.
Could you imagine being in the middle of that tunnel and hearing a train coming? There would be no room to step away from the train.
Those trees 0:34 and that night vision during driving seriously man
Very scary
Damm sure driver was brave
Ya reckon he coulda stopped before entering the tunnel and let some air out of the tires it woulda helped?
The new ones do.
HAHA ole 11'8" got you too? Boxcar is now a flatcar HAHA
everyone saying there's no hits, you can see scrape marks on the walls where previous trains have hit all along the length of the tunnel
Great POV from the cab. DAMN, that's one tight but interesting tunnel.
Not a view you get to see everyday. Thanks for your comment and for watching the video.
“And will die from the heat and smoke”
T H A N K S F O R W A T C H I N G
One time I was crossing through a tunnel and a train came through the other end, had to race out and only made it out with 6 seconds to spare!
Yup, that's a hit at 3:39. It could have been dangerous. Man the tunnel is like dig to fit size. Hope it can be altered or something. Too damn risky for a freight train or just the engine locomotive to pass through.
Parts of the train hit and scrape almost every time through this tunnel. It really is a dangerous tunnel. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@mca0824 That's true and considering the track keeps shifting due to weather conditions, will not be surprised if the scrapes get heavier. Subscribed, found your uploads to be quite interesting. Keep the content flowing.
The tunnel was probably built when steam engines was around and the trains were a little smaller to
@@kvrreddy1605 Thank you for the sub. Sorry I have not responded for a while. More videos are coming very soon. Thanks again.
Not safe for human travel... get stuck? Scary for us claustrafobs for sure.
maxoutputt yea all the rest of us "claustrfobs" are all around you and above you slowly closing in by the hundreds.
You're right, this is a scary tunnel because it's narrow and long, the creepiest part is 2:13
how long is this tunnell?
over 1 mile.
He beat me to it! That's what I was gonna ask. Longest damned mile I (hope!) I never have to see. One mile. Seemed more like Plus 2, Minus nothin'...!☺
+Michael; "over 1 mile." No way! It is only ~1160 m.
just shy of 3/4 mile. I just did the math. (0.72, specifically)
Where is located this tunnel and name of the tunnel?
That's so scary! Imagine being trapped in there.
It is suffocating just watching .
😰😰
what happens if the engineer got a draw bar or knuckle or a busted air hose ??
😬idk how does he get it walk out ?
I don’t know about trains getting through there, I’ve seen some women in my town who’s arses would definitely not get past the entrance !
Gotta' love the sound of that GE!
Why did the ceiling change so much
From past cave ins and I believe they had a fire in this tunnel that burned out the cross tie supports that was inside.
Michael yes..
The California Garage so the Tripp would be more exiting. As it was.wasn't it!??I'll watch it again!
