  • On today's Abandoned America, the Pexped team heads to West Virginia in search of a lost coal mining town called Nuttallburg. Located in the New River Gorge, Nuttallburg is one of the many abandoned coal towns along the river. In this video we explore the Head-house located at the top of the gorge. A steep half-mile down cliffs and caves you will arrive at the mine entrance and Head-house. For more information including our source, please visit:

    I just want to point out that the reason for closing off the entrance is not just for the bats but also for human safety there are many hazards associated with mining and with years and conditions come deterioration

      And nature and gasses and stuff like that can make even more dangers. I always think a Danger Possible Death and symble should be all we need.

    So many people out west who have never been able to travel back east, that would love a decent half hour documentary on these abandoned mining towns. Ten minutes just isn't enough time to even tell the history of said towns. It would be great if you were to keep the camera steady and walk the entire town, keep your uninterested friends out of it and then go back, do some editing, after you learn as much as possible about your subject, write a script, then add music, a scripted voice over and then you can claim fame for doing something that you could be proud of, plus learning more about the country than you ever imagined possible.
    A win, win situation.
    Thanks.

    You say check it out a dozen times but the camera is all over the place and constantly moving. Study up on the mining vocabulary and what the eq was used for like the man trip, it's not used for carrying coal but men to the workings of the mine. City kids

    How nice of the state to turn that place into a park where people can see what life was like in those days.

    • @PEXPED
      @PEXPED  7 років тому +3

      +Lone Star I agree. Most states would close that off and make it private property. It's nice that West Virginia opens towns such as Nuttallburg and Thurmond, free to explore and learn.

    That cave would be awesome for preppers when SHTF. I love my home state of WV. TFS. That was probably an office, in the mines in the old days, they used locust posts to man the walls, for locust trees were hard wood and easy to come by. I come from a long line of miners. Looks like a big cave in. The water is safe, it's just algae. Those are man trips, which the miners practically laid down to go inside the mines. They didn't carry coal, they carried miners. That shaft that led to the river was for water run off, so the mines wouldn't flood.

    Obvious from the dialogue that you hadn't done your homework on coal mining and didn't know what you were looking for or at. This is really not fair for your viewers. This is the first posting of Abandoned America I have seen and hope others you have made are significantly better researched. The videographer needs some serious basic training to upgrade his/her skills. If not, stick to stills.

    City slickers "explaining" things they know nothing about really annoy me. Go get a local old timer to explain what you're looking at. Also of note is that the national park service maintain those sites in safe condition. They even use aged lumber for the repairs keeping it LOOKING old.I grew up near there and my father was born and raised a couple miles from there and worked in that mine.

      Nameless Droner, I like what you say. My mother was born in Fayette county, my Grandfather was president of the first local miner's union when it was still dangerous to be affiliated with unions. Two of my uncle's worked in the mines, and one of my aunts actually was a mine safety inspector for a while. Comments from someone who doesn't really know what he's looking at is hard listening to.
