  • If you've ever wondered how to get that prefect studio drum sound, here's a TON of info. John JR Robinson, the most recorded drummer in the world, mics his kit up with Blue Microphones joined by John Maier (CEO of Blue Microphone) and Michael Tuller (producer/engineer) to discuss the fine details of mic selection and placement including demos of various mic combinations.
    JR is using his personal DW Collector's Series Maple SSC kit, Burnt Toast Fade over Exotic Quilted Redwood with Chrome hardware.
    8x12 and 9x13 (VLT + 3ply rehoops), 13x16 (X + 3ply rehoops), 14x18 and 18x24 (VLX + 3ply rehoops) and a 6.5x14 Concrete Snare Drum.

    One thing about JR is TIME! He has a built in metronome in his head. Just incredible how he plays the ‘easiest’ groove. TIME is always there with such an ease and style! Incredible.

    Absolutely a great video. Very Helpful. Blue Mics are my favorite and am glad you guys used a a full Blue setup so I can see the different ones in action.I really love the idea of using the Baby Bottles on toms. I've got 2 Baby Bottles (and a Bluebird) already and will be picking up a couple more after seeing this... along with picking up a few different Encore mics.

    Those drums sound incredible... The mics are amazing, don't get me wrong, but that kit sounds so good even when their vocal mics are un-muted.
    $12,000 in Mics
    $15,000 in Drums & Cymbals
    so for about $30,000 + you to can get this sound :)

    Thanks for making this and sharing with the world wide web! Sounds simply amazing, although it sounds like the snare is clipping from time to time. Not sure if it's simply a characteristic of the concrete snare or clipping, but anything above mezzo forte gets a little cringey. However, I doubt I'd notice it if I wasn't listening to an isolated drum sound on reference monitors. Should an entire band be mixed in with it, it'd probably go unnoticed.
    Regardless of that, thanks again for all the talent that went into making this! JR makes drums simply sing!

    27:30, so true. I sometimes even switch cables on my headphones (right cable in left earcup and left cable in right earcup) if I am going to listen albums with the reversed placement.

    In 30:30 it sounds great -though a bit distorted and dirty- through the drummer's lavalier (and the rest of the set), I guess similar to the "talkback limiter" in the SSL4000... A good trick to try. Not the first time I hear about a small lavalier in the middle of the kit.

    Great information in this video--thanks for posting.
    Interesting though--at about the 31:30 mark or so (when JR plays his overall kit sound groove), it sure sounds to me as though the snare is clipping. Anyone else notice this? If you put on some good headphones, you can hear what sounds to me to be a bit of clipping on some of the stronger back beats.

      Glad to know I'm not the only one. I heard it earlier on too. It sounds like anything above mezzo forte made that sound. I didn't know if it was characteristic of the concrete snare or simple clipping. I'd seen this video before but not through my reference monitors, so I didn't notice it until now.
      I'm not booing the video by any means. Amazing talent and amazing products but I agree, it sounds like the snare clips at anything above mezzo forte.

    great sounds. The concrete snare sounds pretty dark to me. It lacks some of the higher mids associated with the attack of a snare hit in this video. BUT everything else is amazing ! the concrete snare for me seems very workable, just maybe not something im used to hearing

    That looks and sounds great! now for the audience who would want a setup like this, how much is the total dollar amount of everything shown? Is it something only wealthy people can have access to or can the average Joe and unknown drummer afford?

    You don't want the snare to be centre, you want the kick centre. And I don't know any serious engineers that just use one brand of mics. I find Blue mics generally on the hot side, though they are a lot more fun than Neumanns.

  • @mrnegronis
    @mrnegronis 9 років тому

    The concrete snare sounds awesome. I wonder if it is prone to cracking. I would imagine the tension of the heads alone would cause some stress fractures. I doubt anyone would want to take it on the road. What happens if you drop it? Yikes.

      +CR One of the most sturdy drums we make. You would have to setout to break this drum to damage it.

    I have a DW collectors kit, (black oyster finish, great drums) and even with fresh oem DW heads, tuning to pitch,etc..I can't get the resonance on the toms I hear on this kit..were you adding reverb in the mix? they sound awesome..

    • @dwdrums
      @dwdrums  10 років тому

      Do not remember if there was reverb added. Bluemic had an engineer come in and setup the miking, sound to his liking (although I know any eq'ing, verb would be very minimal) to demonstrate the Bluemic line.

    • @jimmartin3602
      @jimmartin3602 10 років тому +2

      I have to figure in the room that they are in. I have some very resonant drums and have to record in a low ceiling room in my home studio. Almost impossible to get an organic, natural sound. The DW studio has probably been sonically crafted to be a good if not great room for recording drums. Overheads and room mikes will always enhance resonance and use a good sounding room to create a great sound on a recording. I understand that this video is to show off Blue microphones, DW Drums and even JR but the room is really one of the main factors with resonance. Also they aren't mentioning the importance of good mic pres but...again the room is very important.

    • @Tristanrgreene11
      @Tristanrgreene11 3 роки тому

      Haha I understand what your saying....the thing a bit with jr. Is that he doesn’t necessarily look like a super pro player as he’s playing... meaning his technique Isn’t immaculate as basically with all pro players currently. Jr. however has been doing the top top sessions for many years and is hired for a few subtle reasons. As well Jr. Isn’t gonna dig down an start shredding immediately he’s got a deep vault of any level grooves. Also he’s not like a lot of drummers today just sitting down and ripping his holy fuckin shit chops to confuse and excite even the highest skilled drummers... jr. Is much more than that, he’s seasoned and been in every situation and as well has a serious box of tricks as an engineer so he’s the best of many worlds. He’s played a billion tunes and in a lot of different groove type sessions which is something lost these days, we can mainly go back to anything not quite perfect and make it spot on dead nuts perfect... and to me when everything is perfect there’s some strange magic missing, and it’s not until you really are able to go to some of your fav records and listen for perfect timing and every hit you’d be suprised that a lot of your fav tracks you may think are perfect in that way and they’re not, there’s push and pull within the whole band or r. section etc and that’s whether magic that perfection these days is not obtaining etc. also everything is different in perspective just as each of these guys say in many ways. On top of that as you hear jr. say playing live and in the studio, perspectives and sounds are different as they look and sound energy wise and playing styles etc. there are so many things that go beyond how they look and some of the simple things that seem simple are far from. I understand where your coming from but jr. Is a subtle sweet dude and of cOurse I’m biased when it comes to drummers I’m into but if he’s the dude that came in to play on everything after mr. jeff Porcaro than hes been the man for a very long time and his personality as a person plays a lot into how the sessions are gonna end up, after all of what the eye can see and judge from a 35 min video perspective on how great a session is gonna be based on its gear, engineers, and players. Blah blah blah....just in my opinion. I hope to see you on the next high end gear and top session players within a two year beginning span. Remember to blast it all in my face saying I have no clue what I’m talking about etc. of course I’m being a dick and am joking 🙃
