Harbor seals are so fun. I’ve had one teasing me for hours when I was ab diving. Adorable. Charging me and fin-tapping me. It was never aggressive. We made eye contact and then he would circle around me to “get” me from behind.

I surf almost in an area where the land above the beach is private, so it's usually just a small group of locals that surf our local spot. We started noticing the same otter would appear over and over again, particuarly in warmer months. We nicknamed him Chompy because he puts his urchins and other shells on this chest and chomps and cracks them really loudly. Over the years, he's gotten more and more and more comfortable with the local pack. So much so that he would get within inches of us while he cracked open his lunch. Finally, he just started coming up to those of us he'd see on almost daily basis and would pull up right next to us and flip on his back, seemingly wanting something. One day, I just pet his little belly, and he seemed to ask for more. Animals are rad when they get to know and accept us "intruders" to their natural environment.

Everyone's skipped over that Seaworld WAS called. Their rescue team gave him a check-up and he was perfectly healthy so they didn't even need to do anything. One worrying thing right now is that there is a serious toxic algal bloom on the Cali coast right now, which if it gets close to shore, will affect and kill harbour seals.
Constant proof that no matter how cruel and harsh nature can be at times, it bares these gifts to us showing how noble animals are (regardless of species), certainly far more than us considering we decimate their numbers and invade/destroy,pollute their habitats with no accountability…..
