Making a Wood and Metal Side Table End Tables

  • Building an Industrial Style side table end table using reclaimed pallet wood and metal.
    To add to the industrial feel, I added steel gusset plates and rivets. The wood was stained then treated with a clear satin finish. The metal was brought to a semi-bright finish using flap discs supplied by United Abrasives. After the metal was cleaned it was then treated with a paste wax to resist fingerprints and prevent rust.

    love the epoxy idea with the pallet wood. it still looks rustic and at the same time looks very smooth with no compromise on either side.

      @BrandonLund  8 років тому

      +james boyd Your absolutely spot on! It's the best thing I've found when using it on pallet wood for the reason you pointed out, that it still retains its rustic look. It's also extremely stable (no cracking) during season changes. Thanks for watching!

    Hey Brandon, some folks just can't stand to see someone built quality things. I really liked your build of the end tables and would imagine they will be around long after we have all thought possible. It's a shame there are people out there who love to stir up hate or just make nasty comments because they think it's funny but they don't realize they are just showing their ignorance.
    Keep up the good work and helping people to learn to weld in some form. I'm paying attention to the stick welding and learning from your lessons. Thanks for sharing.

      I'd guess it's because of the dominant music. People enjoy watching stuff like this, but either with comments, instructions or just the sound of the work. If I want music I have my own. If that makes sense.

    Very tidy work, its satisfying to build your own stuff. I see people commenting about the welded on rivets like it really matters. Its a furniture piece for show. I seen in another comment you would sell this for $100. I'd say that would retail in those fancy boutique city shops for anywhere between $400-500.

      Shoot, seen similar products built cheaper sold for $900-$1,000 and if you sold the set... $2,500-$2,600 easily. It's not about price gouging! It's about what type of person your marketing towards!

    I really like the look of this. You didn't put some sort of finish on the metal parts? Clear coat or similar? Won't it rust?

    • @BrandonLund
      @BrandonLund  7 років тому +1

      +Robert Steen Thanks man. On this one I didnt use anything and you have to be careful with drinks or any spills. I built a matching coffee table and used furniture paste wax and that worked really well. The microwave cart video I used clear enamel. That is the best protection but it doesn't patina like the bare or wax treated metal.

    • @BrandonLund

      +muonwap I actually found the rivets on ebay and cut them to the proper length. For this project I used 5/16" round head rivets. No matter what you find for rivets, you will likely have to cut them. The shortest I have found are 1/4" and that's still too long.

      I use just regular furniture past wax (if you click my workshop tools link in the description it will take you to an Amazon link where most of the stuff I use is listed). You apply it just like wax on a car. It repels rust and staining for about a couple years of regular use then you just apply it again.

    What did you cut with the plasma cutter?

    • @BrandonLund
      @BrandonLund  6 років тому +1

      Bettina sorry. I missed the mark on that. Good eye! The plate steel for the corner gussets had to be trimmed to the proper width prior to me going back and cutting them to length. I was using the plasma cutter to speed up that process. I could have avoided that step simply by using 4” flat bar rather than making flat bar from my scrap pile.

    Yikes, you really need to use push sticks on that table saw... very bad things can happen to your fingers if you don't respect the equipment and use proper safety gear.

    • @BrandonLund
      @BrandonLund  7 років тому +2

      +Brian Greul I Completely agree. I suppose it's my comfort level. Not saying it won't happen, but 25 years of running a table saw and I still have all 10 digits.

    • @hotpuppy72
      @hotpuppy72 7 років тому +1

      There are tons of professional woodworkers missing digits who would have said the same thing. To each their own. I did a ton of research on saw safety when I was evaluating SawStop. I opted to save my money and buy a Ridgid saw, but I came away from that research with a healthy fear of the blade. At a minimum, I'd suggest getting something with a riving knife and not standing down range of the "throw path". Awesome project btw, I fully plan to do something inspired by it. :)

    • @BrandonLund
      @BrandonLund  7 років тому +1

      +Brian Greul All excellent points brother. The saw stop is great, but as you said, expensive. As long as you don't allow your mind to wander, that rigid saw will be great for you. I know a shop teacher that recently ran his hand through the saw. It was a long recovery. He was thinking about everything except what he was doing, and more specifically where his hand was in relation to the work. FYI, I do use push sticks on occasion, but typically only when it's a narrow rip or I'm cutting a rabbit or dado and my finger actually passes over the blade below. I will utilize a push stick more in the future though because I don't want to pass off my comfort level in my videos as "this is the proper way", so thank you for bringing that up. It's an excellent point and really takes no extra effort :)

    • @BrandonLund
