- It's Mission Impossible 7!...7a? And this time there's Reckoning that's Dead. This movie got pretty good reviews at first but I know of at least a few people that really really reeeeeeeally hated it. So this is for you, sweet ones! Sorry it's only part one of part one, but it was just too much movie to get through in one week! Here's Everything right with Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One! (Part 1)

Some part of me is still living in denial imagining Ilsa faked her death again. I really hope the sequel ties everything up and makes her death truly worth it and not just a stakes-setter
I'm decently sure her death was faked, like 60/40 or something. The only convincing reason it wouldn't be faked is that the actress is busy right now with Silo and Dune, otherwise there's lots of Mission Impossible style reasons why they'd fake it for the AI. It also generally felt uncharacteristic for someone this major to go out like that.
Bruh she’s dead man. Her death was a necessary sacrifice it gives the story stakes and shows the versatility of the entity.
@@master-of-mind5881 necessary sacrifice? nah, Rebecca Ferguson just wanted to go make the Dune movies instead.
Also Rebecca Ferguson seemed pretty happy to be out of the series in the Dune interviews
I'm not sure that she is dead. They made a big deal about faking us out with her death in the beginning of the movie. They were building Ilsa up as Ethans motivation to leave the IMF. It makes no sense to suddenly kill her off
The craziest part of the AI mimicking Benji is that it even includes Benji messing up his directions which happened a couple times in Fallout.
how did cinema wins do thst in this video
Love that Ethan in Kittridge mask did the classic Ethan head tilt.
I like dudes
“No Luther not DONE, DUNN… that’s my last name… it knows who I am…”
Bone chilling, really wish you covered the airport nuke more
Yeah. Captures the threat of AI really well
Hayley "i see why Cap went back in time" Atwell is always a win
What I like most about this "mind-reading shape-shifting embodiment of chaos" line is that it builds on the reputation Hunt already has in this universe, in Rogue Nation he's referred to as "the living manifestation of destiny", I just absolutely adore how even top top top level spies and soldiers in this universe regard Ethan as this otherworldly being,
Mission Impossible isn't even a superhero film, and it still does that better than 95% films that officially are, besides all the mind-blowing action and set pieces.
You didn't mention during the hallway and bridge fight scene, Ethan and Gabriel are both fighting women, and you can see Ethan trying not to hurt her and then see Gabrial throwing Grace into the wall and then killing Ilsa, and at the end Ethan has to win the fight and still tries to get her to surrender instead of having to seriously hurt her.
This can also relate to when Gabriel was talking to Grace and said Ethan will hurt people who get close to him and will kill anyone if they get in their way, and we first hand see that Ethan doesn't act like that, Gabriel does.
I think both Pom and Hayley were fantastic additions to the cast. Hayley fits in so well and really held her own with the rest of the veterans. Look forward to seeing more of her in the future!
I love that he Director on National Intel first thought the IMF meant International Monetary Fund, even tho I've never actually put that together.
I like how half the references he makes are so obscure/old that they sound like the delusional ravings of a mad man in a padded room.
To me, they are not obscure, but then again I am also old, which my grown-up kids keep telling me. We know what we sound like.
Holy crap, a TWF reference in the wild??
The Walking Fed?
It's about time someone shouted out Shea Whigham!! He really is one of my favorite character actors currently. Absolutely LOVED him in Season 1 of True Detective as the revivalist preacher!
So wild that I recognize the "airport" in that scene because it's in my hometown, Birmingham UK. It was a big deal when Tom rolled into town, especially when some locals nicked his BMW.
Did he get his car back? Since BMW is a movie sponsor, it probably belonged to the production.
Yes Mission Impossible! Bringing back all the Nostalgia
The thing I love most about the spoiler titles is that it's a huge mark of smug confidence by the filmmakers. As if to say "yeah, we just put all this sick shit in the titles, but we bet you're gonna wanna stick around to see what the context is".
YES I WAS WAITING FOR THIS!!! Also, love the AI Benji bit. Genius.
I think the scene scared me the most in the movie, because even though this film came out of the height of AI voices, the script writing process happened way before so this kind of predicted it
how did cinema wins do that@@NIX-FLIX
1. I think the best "Russian to English" transition scene HAS to be "The Hunt for Red October" (IMO), just brilliant without beating you over the head with it... but this one is pretty well done, too.
It is wild how much this series got us all to love Ilsa given her past. You mention at 11:04 that Grace should die in part because "Grace left Ethan to die," but Ilsa betrayed Ethan and almost got him killed more than once in Rogue Nation. Not to mention shooting at Ethan in Fallout. And I'm not saying I don't love Ilsa, I'm just saying it's impressive that she's so likable!
she's likable because she's the only woman in the entire series to ever come back for more then one film in more then a small cameo capacity like they did with the White widow character, we appreciate a familiar face, even if don't fully trust her.
Every time Ilsa betrayed Ethan, she had a reason to do so. And Ethan being a kindred spirit understood that and trusted her completely. So we as an audience trust her too.
Solomon Lane needs Ethan alive throughout Rouge Nation so he can manipulate him to complete his goals and Ilsa is doing the same as she sees him as her ticket out from Lane and MI6 -hence for example why she saves him when he 'drowns'. It's why she gives him a very sad 'sorry but I had no choice' look after the motorbike crash and doesn't hold it against him when he knocks her off her bike in Fallout. When she shoots in Fallout, it's at Lane and she kills 'John Lark' against orders to protect him earlier on.
The main thing about this film that stood out to me was the glorious soundtrack. Lorne Balfe went all out for this & I can't wait for how he does DR P2.
"I was hoping it'd be you" went crazy hard.
Lorne Balfe is now one of my favorite movie composers thanks to both his Mission: Impossible soundtracks.
@@evangremlich5775 Fs. I also love his Assassin's Cree stuff.
This was my first Mission Impossible movie, and it made me want to watch all of the others. Perfect balance of silly action movie logic and actually incredibly impressive action set pieces.
Most of them aren't as silly as this one. Watch Ghost Protocol. Really smartly written and my god if you like action set pieces, it has one of the best in cinema.
Do watch them! They are a lot of fun, even 2
Definitely recommend watching the others, they're pretty much all great (with one exception), it's probably the best action movie franchise currently ongoing
This one is my favourite MI film thus far even surpassing fallout which was excellent.
The story based on the entity is enthralling to witness because for the first time Ethan is facing an enemy with virtually no limits, no emotions, no fear. It’s certainly the most ambitious movie in the series and the team dynamic is at its pinnacle. Hayley Atwell is a wonderful addition to the cast, Gabriel is a superb villain, love how the backstory which predates the original movie factors into the narrative. Can’t wait for part 2. This was my top film of 2023!
@@TableCreed , I'd say Fallout and Rogue Nation tops Ghost Protocol in action set pieces.
Been a long time since you covered a movie I've actually seen. It feels nice to be back.
I feel like you're going to do it in part 2, but the score deserves some serious praise, especially my favorite track 'I was hoping it'd be you' which plays when Ilsa fights gabriel and Ethan is running to find them. It's both epic and kinda remorseful, I love it so much.
god this movie was so tense the entire way through from beginning to end.
You know, Ethan wanting to destroy the Entity is exactly why Harry Potter destroyed the Elder Wand. That other agent was right. That’s too much power for one person to have, it’s too much power for ANYONE to have.
This film was one of the best action films of the year. In my opinion, it deserved to earn a lot more money than it did.
Most franchises go bad after having too many movies but this doesn't seem to be one of these franchises.
Agreed it’s so underrated and under-appreciated. Barbieheimer crushed its chances. Here’s hoping part 2 soars.
@@master-of-mind5881 I hope they'll do a re-release before part 2 comes out, just to give it another chance.
I have loved (almost) all of the MI movies, and I was so hyped for this one based on the trailer and how it looked like they were going to be doing callbacks to wrap the franchise up ... and then I saw this one and didn't love it. The only reason was because it felt like they knew that since there was a part two they didn't have to be tight with this one and scenes dragged on way longer than they needed to.
This and John Wick 4. Though, if I’m being honest, I’d say JW4 was just a little better. This took me three viewings to figure out the details. Still loved it, though.
I love how this whole video is the embodiment of "oh, you sweet summer child" and i love it! *ding*
I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your positive vibe in your videos. There’s so much negativity right now, that your channel is the place to go to reset my fulcrum.
Paris's first line is when she tells her goons to go get grace after the crash. Still love the video!
I know some people were annoyed with Grace, but I liked that she wasn’t a spy… she panicked, she can’t drive or fight very well… she’s just not on this level. I like seeing the spy world from the perspective of someone much more “normal”. She’s a mid level thief and had no idea what she was getting into.
Ilsa's death hit hard. She became one of my favorite characters in this franchise, and i wasn't expecting it. When Gabriel said one of them had to die, I just knew Ethan was going to figure out how to save both of them. Boy, was i wrong.
For me, just small guy from Poland, seeing another actor from Poland in Hollywood blockbuster movie made me jump out of joy when I saw this movie in cinema. After the movie I had had like 4-5 hours of sleeping before get to work. Tomorrow afterI was literaly a happy 'walking dead' in work, but it was totally worth it and I would do it again.
Omitting "Haylee Atwell is always a win" is a crime.
The True Detective intro song caught me off-guard. I just rewatched it 😁
I loved how this movie was tense the entire time the time flew by and felt like it was one long action scene
Thank you for your positivity and sharing your love of movies! 😁
Im a really patient person, but... WHERE'S PART 2, LEE?!?!?!
I'm super glad that Marcin Dorocinski got a role in this movie (he was in the submarine prologue), it makes him the first Pole to start in Mission Impossible movie. It also saddens me that the train sequence that could've happened in Poland ultimately didn't happen there because stupid historical disputes :(
Yo!!!! Part One (Pt. 1)! I'm pumped!
Been waiting for this
Didn’t love this movie but loved your coverage of this as per usual - can’t wait to hear you talk Balfe’s score next week :)
8:50 The position swap is actually 'done properly' so to speak. You see them swap sides inside as the car rolls.
You're a good man and a very good writer. Love your channel for years now
I actually saw Tom filming this. “Abu Dhabi airport” was partially filmed in New Street Station in Birmingham, England where I live. Got off the train one day to see a very bored-looking film crew filming Tom and Hayley Atwell going up an elevator over and over again for about 20 minutes. They kept the shot in the film and if you know what you’re looking for you can see the distinctive roof of the station in some of the shots.
That’s so sick. I live in Santa Cruz and the Santa Cruz boardwalk is one of the settings and it was super surreal
One of my favorite movies of 2023 and honestly one of the best movies I’ve ever watched. Tom Cruise is a true master of the action franchise and knows how to up the stakes (and stunts) every time!
I love this film so much. I cannot wait for part two.
oof that quote from Simon Pegg about the absurdity of AI mimicking Benji's voice aged VERY poorly 💀
I hate to ask this but…
…was that AI or was that an actual voice clip?
@@jonathanmcginley8128 pretty sure it was just Simon Pegg considering when this movie was being filmed AI hadn't reached that level yet
It's a clip I wrote and recorded with his voice.
@@CinemaWins maaaan I thought that was a massive poorly aged quote from Simon Pegg in like an interview or something 😭 but it sure does goes to show you
@@CinemaWins That is hilarious! It sounded so much like him.
This is probably the first AI based film I’ve seen that rlly excels at showing the fear that an all powerful AI could instil. Not knowing if what ur seeing is real, if the actions u chose have already been accounted for or even if a private conversation is truly private. This films writing is actually kinda underrated, and all the loose ends I could easily see them tying up in the next part
Was waiting for this
Something I knew before cinemawins...Rebecca can't wink.
Oh hell yeah!! I'm glad you're doing this ❤️
You're not wrong about Paris offering a hell of a way to go in the alley.
Also love that the intro credit scene comes in twenty something minutes into the film. That is commitment to the bit.
12:18
Don’t tell me you got SIMON PEGG to record that bit for the video?! 😮
I thought it was an AI fake Pegg, saying how an AI could not do what it was doing right then.
Imma wait for part 2 before watching this I guess !
Glad you're tackling this episode !
Oh, how I have been waiting for this.
There's a ton of mention of choice in this one and the lack thereof, especially in the scene post Ilsa's death where they reference that the initial choice that started them all in the IMF was really a false one, given the alterntive was death or imprisonment. I think they're gonna set up where Ethan offers or even convinces the Entity to take the same choice in the end, and we're gonna get like Person of Interest AI like scenario where the govt fully disbannds the IMF, and the Entity takes up the role as a shadow benefactor and mission giver of the IMF. There could even be a scene in the end where a bunch of agents, former agents of other agencies, talented good natured criminals, etc. around the globe, get contacted by the Entity offering them a choice. This could set up the Mission Impossible movie series for the future if Tom Cruise is gonna stop being in them.
Nice theory sound I can see this happening.
Counterpoint: I *only* know Shea Whigham's name and never remember the names of his characters but always excited to see him.
Man, youtube just stopped showing me that you were uploading so I thought you havent uploaded in like months :(
love the video, love the content, will be more active looking for your videos from now on!
This seems to be happening a lot. My January break may not be a good idea anymore. :/
11:04 THANK YOU FOR THAT VALIDATION. That was my exact reaction, both in the cinema and on a rewatch
Love your content 😊😊😊❤❤
Part of why she goes on the bridge is because in Venice there are like 3 bridges that get to the major part and they are pretty far apart. it is an easy place to get cornered. likely this was the quickest path whoch then takes you near the train station unless you cop a boat. but on foot Venice has limited routes for getting around.
This movie was awesome! Can't wait for the next part.
6:19 it’s like he’s still on the dunes!
such a perfectly crafted movie! most people simply didn't understand the A.I. plot because they don't properly pay attention.
XDDDDD Bro thinks we didn't understand the A.I plot, because we are lazy idiots, who don't pay attention. We don't get the A.I plot because Cristopher McQuarry made the decision to include the AI as the main villain while in the middle of shooting, meaning we have to get a washed 12 minute dialogue scene explaining what the AI is, which is outright inexcusable for a so called "perfectly crafted movie". Furthermore, the AI got almost no screentime meaning apart from a sequence at the beginning, we have no evidence to perceive the entity as a threat. And because, Cristopher McQuarry decides to make his movies while recording, it comes with rushed and incomplete plots, like genuinely, Ethan Hunt, gains both parts of the key which he already had half of at the beginning and the location of the submarine, which we already knew 10 minutes in. This movies is so bloated and empty at the same time, because so little happens over a 2.5 hour duration. Also unforced plot errors like Ethan parachuting in the exact carriage at the exact time needed to save Grace's life. Such a perfectly crafted movie. 😒😒😒
@@Perceptive-Abyss okay, explain the A.I. plot to me then. here's your chance to prove me wrong. you just wrote about 10 sentences of nonsense, so write another two or three sentences and explain it, if you can.
It would've succeeded in the box office anyway. If it had not been the case, then the film shouldn't compete against Barbie which was released a week after.
This one is my favourite MI film thus far even surpassing fallout which was excellent.

Modern audiences are educated into stupidity
Now I’m not a big anime fan, but a Castle of Cagliostro reference is always a win!!! And if you do one day do a Everything great about Castle of Cagliostro video that would definitely be a win!
Woo! Thanks for the video! I've been a fan of the MI films for a while and always love a CinemaWins video. I personally didn't like the villain very much since its foresight "powers" seemed really inconsistent just so the plot could advance (and I'm a bit sick of the evil AI villain). I also thought the stakes didn't feel very high since the only actually devastating thing the AI did (to my memory) was killing Ilsa. I'm still excited for part 2 to see how they end it and whether my predictions are correct.
Oh man, now I can't wait for part 2 of Part 1. This was such an amazing and intense movie. Once you are done with this MI movie, I wonder if you are going to start up the Indiana Jones franchise at some point. Its my second favorite franchise of all time, behind Star Wars, because it's something I've been watching my whole life so if you do the IJ movies, I will be over the moon excited.
I was waiting for you to point out Angela Bassett's portrait in the background in that meeting
Why is there no win for Grace's and Ilsa's costumes in Venice?? Those vests are amazing
I loved the trailer for this movie when it launched, but after watching it, I loved it so much more, TC is a action fans national treasure and this movie is a crown jewel.
True Detective season 1?! 😳 Can not wait! 😎👍❤️
My girlfriend and I watched through every Mission Impossible movie shortly before watching this in the theater. While we watched them we had a drinking game that whenever Tom Cruise ran, we took a shot. When we watched this in the theater and we saw Tom Cruise run we both just couldn't stop giggling.
Leaving a comment for engagement because your channel deserves it.
Great spin on the opening theme
NEXT WEEK???
I NEED IT NOW!!!
12:22 bro that was crazy you even got the entity whirring when it switched 😂
Having met atwell at a con i can relate to that extra.
FINALLY CINEMAWINS DOING DEAD RECOKONING!!!!
Couldn't help but get a strong The Sum of All Fears vibe with the piano music during the airport scene, really raised the tension knowing how Baltimore turned out...
So next week you’re doing a show called True Detective, eh?
Second part of this is banned in Britain im gutted at least i got part 1 though
2:04 That actor (who’s name I can unfortunately not immediately recall) is always a win.
9:33 small fun fact: The AI would've erased him, but wasn't able to recognize his face in the reflection, with the sunglasses and the bottles obscuring it.
Very realistic!
Can you please do Nimona? That movie was amazing. And despite Disney trying to kill it, it survived anyway. One of the best animated movies of last year, imo.
You forgot a win where everyone was wearing black and white in the scene where all of the characters are together, signifying their roles in the movie. at 10:20
This movie was a slight step down from Fallout, but topping that one was gonna be difficult! I’d say they gave us a blast of an entry for a follow-up! 😄
The train fight itself was worth a ticket! It’s one of my favorite train battles in a film. Right up there with the ones from The Wolverine, Skyfall and Broken Arrow*!
*=I’d love to see you count the wins in that 1996 cult film!
He's off and flyin' as he guns the car around the track
You need to do Castle of Cagliostro! That would be fun to see you do Miazaki films
The Entity predicted I would like this video
I’m really not a fan of how this film treated Ilsa’s death. It’s not that she died, or even that she died to raise the stakes (at this point in MI, character death is the only way to raise the stakes any higher). It’s that her death was in service of the story between Ethan and the newly introduced villain, rather than the story between her and Ethan that had been developing for 2 films.
Ilsa’s whole deal was that she was a twist on the classic “I want a peaceful life but I can’t bc I’ve gotta be a spy” narrative. Instead of representing that peaceful life like Julie, she’s in the exact same position as Ethan. Both long for a life they know they can never have, and because they’re such kindred spirits, they’re able to find some comfort in each other. It’s a genuinely refreshing twist on a classic narrative, and it’s frustrating that her death had almost nothing to do with that.
And it’s made worse by the fact that they introduced another beautiful British brunette to replace her. I get that they’re very different characters and I actually do like Grace and her role in the story, but it just feels wrong to kill Ilsa and immediately replace her with another woman. The viewer doesn’t have time to feel Ilsa’s absence because they’re too busy getting used to Grace’s presence.
In most films, no one is dead until you see a body.
In IMF no one can EVER be completely considered dead.
Also, can we get a shout out for the insane level of chemistry between Tom Cruise and Rebecca Ferguson in this film? You get the sense that there was someone just off screen with a cold bucket of water, just in case.
Now I need to rewatch, thanks for the impetus, CinemaWins!
I hope Ilsa's alive because the way they killed her off was just...not it for me. Just a few movies ago, they had her go up against the Bone Doctor in a knife fight - who was a much bigger and younger opponent. Gabriel is a middle-aged, normal-sized man. It just didn't feel right.
I am begging for A Whisker Away. Amazing film. Involves my favourite thing ever: Depression :)
Really loud gasp at the ending music in this video, cannot wait
I look at the Length of a Video for some context...seeing this at 14 minutes feels like it says A LOT lol
8:28 was that the metal pipe sound???
7:07 he actually did the same move in Rogue Nation lol
You should SO do Lupin after thst reference, I beg of you!
I just can't forgive this movie for fridgeing Ilsa. But I appreciate you finding the positive and look forward to hearing more of your positive takes in part 2 of part 1
Every pointing out of references to the first Tom Cruise MI movie further disappoints me that the "Dead Reckoning" of the title referred to some rando with basically no build-up named Gabriel rather than "someone from a _previous movie_ thought _dead_ but returned to give Ethan a _reckoning_ because of blaming Ethan for personal misfortune" like hacker Jack who got crushed in the elevator. Jack was on par with Luther skill-wise and could've returned with a bunch of scars and artificial limbs or something and made more sense if an AI entity being the central MacGuffin and potential antagonist was in play.
That might still happen in the part 2. Jack might have been turned into the Entity when he "died."
