@John H What you call Scots Irish is known to us as Northern Irish it's a mix is of English and lowland Scots (Anglo Saxons) planters, the 1790-1810 census of the Appalachians shows a mix of Scottish and English, the Scottish names are boarder with only 4 McNames, there's no one from Ireland and no O'names, 1 German and 1 French, the Accent is west country and east Anglian English, so they must have been there in large numbers to influence the language so completely, cloggings still popular here, 'Irish Dance' is a mix of step dance that was done all over the islands and French quadrilles, there's little history to it try tracing any reliable evidence before the 1920s.

I really appreciated this dance. It is far more traditional and not Nashvilleized a bit. My mother would get aggravated seeing how fast some of the music was played and seeing the square dancing on TV which she said was entirely wrong. She said it was way too fast and not like they all used to dance at all.

    • @IssyEmeney

Thanks Linda. It's interesting to see the varying opinions about speed! I like a relaxed pace - gives me time to connect the steps with the music instead of just trying to keep up! Mind you, it was slow even for me as I recorded it after 7 hours dancing non-stop, and I'm not a young girl!!

I was square dancing at 5 years old at the park on Saturday evenings, in 1950, with the rest of the people in town, it was fast or slow, depending on the caller. Fast or slow, it was all fun, and now, gone forever.
