Holy crap! I didn't know this existed until now. I most fortunately got to see Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks perform live in 1972 when I was just finishing my freshman year in high school. My older brother pissed off his younger high school aged girlfriend and she invited me to go to a concert featuring Dan Hicks that my brother was supposed to attend. Lucky me as I became a lifelong fan of Dan Hicks to this day, and I'm now 66. Such a unique sound and blend of musical styles that only Dan could have pulled off. I'm the son of a jazz pianist musician/performer so I so got Dan and the Hot Licks who were awesome accompianists. There is no equal or comparison with Dan the HLs. I was pleasantly surprised when Thomas Dolby did a cover "I Scare Myself" in the 1980s, long after I became aware of Dan Hicks. Music history is an incredible statement for those who pay attention to the message.
Do yourself a favor, listen to Dan’s recordings. I still listen to Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks. I love him for lines like “The cigarettes I’m smokin’ don’t seem to understand, neither does the glass from which I drink.” Or, “It’s just the beginning the losers are winning so soon.” That seems to have always been thus all through the ages. ❤
I have been a life long fan of Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks ever since I first saw them live (I have "the Last Train to Hicksville" and others). There is no equal to the original master. "Make mine a Harvey Wallbanger".
I'm ashamed to admit I thought this a Dolby song start to end and "Who's Dan Hicks?!". As someone who is bi-polar being scared of yourself has a special meaning. Thank you, Thomas!
This is one of my favorite Dolby songs. I never knew it was a cover. So cool that 31 years after Dolby recorded the cover, he arranged Hicks to perform with him only 16 months before Dan died. Thank you Thomas for again broadening my musical palate.
I would recommend finding Hicks' Beatin' the Heat (if you haven't) to hear him cover himself with the help of Rickie Lee Jones. That version is an equal to Dolby's beautiful version.
I'm a 70s kid so we read everything on the album cover and the labels in those days while playing the vinyl. So it stood out for me that it wasn't a Dolby original when I saw the credit way back when. BUT it was certainly a couple of decades before I heard the original that's for sure.
Daniel Ivan Hicks. Dan passed away on February 6, 2016, after a two-year battle with cancer, how very sad. After hearing "Jukie's Ball" way back in '69 an have been a fan ever since.
Loved the Thomas Dolby version since I first heard it in 84 as a youngster. Never heard of Dan Hicks until today and this lovely video has converted me
thank you very much for posting this..I heard Dan Hicks the first time in Boulder CO 1973 when I was a homesick SF girl..I decided that night I had to move back..somehow someway. and I went to many a Dan Hicks musicales ever since I moved back to SF in 1974. For me he was Mr. SF....of his era.....
Saw dan hicks 1984 @the lone star cafe manhattan, what a performer! Saw sir Thomas 1985 @ radio city music hall do this song! Absolutely magic! Never forget how his music made my life richer, brighter, better!😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Every time I bartended in Nashville, I would always have I Scare Myself amongst my music. Every night I would play the song, people would come up and ask if this is the Dan Hicks song? I said yes but by Thomas Dolby. They would always love it.
Thoughtful interview by Thomas. Ashamed to admit I never heard of Dan Hicks and didn't even know scare myself was a cover until seeing this video (lots of faith in Thomas so cover song never crossed my mind). Glad to finally put the pieces together. Hunted quality, I would say so! Scared myself listening to it with this newfound perspective knowing that Dan suffered from the insidious diseases of addiction and cancer passing over a couple years after this performance - RIP Dan Hicks. Watched videos of scare myself from the early days and read the wiki on Dan's career to broaden the newfound perspective. Definitely not your ordinary cat as evidenced by his idiosyncratic musical style that defies genre taxonomy.
And just in case you didn't get around to Dolby's cover of I Scare Myself, it's on his album entitled....lol, oh, crap, I'm forgetting...but, the song Hyperactive is also on the album. Great album of only 7 songs, I think.
Dan Hicks was my first entree to acoustic swing. I've been playing for 52 years now and guess what my favorite style is?... acoustic swing! Thanks, Dan for all of that great original authentic, wonderful music you and your compatriots produced over the years. You were one of a kind for sure!.
Ya I seen Dan Hicks and the hot licks in 1971 for my 21st birthday Jan3 and on New Year’s Eve. He was amazing and went out on the back deck and smoke a little hash with the girls. Dan came out and my buddy said to Dan this your biggest fan Miechymouse!!
Thank you Sir Thomas, (you have earned it) as times get more complicated and people forget that there is more to life than the left or right, that there are ups and downs, and the drummer deserves his shining moment of glory, right after the cellist. Trailing sentences aside; this was brilliant! That's all. Peace
I can only imagine how much money Mr. Dolby’s (and those that came after him) version of this song has made for Dan over the years. Also fortunate that the crazy radio scene in Austin in the 70’s would play Dan Hicks music quite frequently.
Sad this video was not produced better, it is a wonderful song and why can I barely hear Zoe on the cello? She is a wonderful cellist. Wish I could have heard her better.
How can anything be so good, seriously.. Can't stand it. I listen over and over and it's never enough. When I heard it first, back in 80's I was dissolved and taken to a garden with gigantic green leaves (for some reason) and it was hard to come back.
The Chapped Lips (with me) opened for Dan at Hunts in Burlington Vt way back in the day. He was solo but it was an amazing show. Great guitar and he was incredibly funny
I love Ben Sidran's comment in his Strikin' It Rich liner notes: 'Sid Page's solo on "I Scare Myself" literally caused me to drive my car into oncoming traffic'.
What a find for me today, I've loved this song (since 1969!) by Dan and loved Dolby, never knew Thomas did a cover. What a treat. BTW Dan Hicks went to my High School. Miss him as much as any musician who has recently passed. What a treasure, Dan Hicks, one of a kind.
Thanks for introducing me to Dan Hicks, Thomas! Sadly, I wasn't really familiar with his works till I heard you play this song at a concert a handful of years ago. Now I happily cover this tune on baritone uke.
One of my new favourites.. never heard til today.beautiful melody..great lyrics..great voice..great jazz sound. Love it. Thankyou for making great music.
I met him three times, the last time I met him he was a solo act and I think he nodded out at some point. He apologized for his previous behavior, most charming and sweet person
Wow! What a moment..The opening is amazing .So fortunate you have made this available. Thanks for a really fitting tribute to a unique musician and artist.
VER-R-RY COOL! 😊💖 I am *LOVING* every bit of this! *THANK YOU* for making this happen! Your time, energy, awareness & ability to act on Ispiration💥 are recognized & APPRECIATED! ...& another *THANK YOU* for sharing it here for all to experience!💖💖💖 What a GIFT!🎁
I hope you read these comment Thomas, I actually worked on your little flat in Fulham way back in the 80s and we met a few times. It was you who got me listening to Dan Hicks after I heard this song on an album you did. I discovered he was a part of the "psychadelic" music explsion at the Red Dog saloon in Nevada somehwere. Anyhow it was nice meeting you.
"Evening Breeze" reminds me of those Buskers in New Orleans and their fantastic eclectic sound of music such as one of my favorites, now nowhere to be found... "Yes Ma'am".
I love Dan Hicks. T Dolby's cover of this tune is awesome. The cello added so much to this proformace. On Dan's last album he did a version of I scare myself with Ricky Lee Jones and a camera winder Google it.

I look forward to listening to 'Crazy for Christmas' each Christmas season. Always brings a smile to my face.
I'm ashamed to admit I thought this a Dolby song start to end and "Who's Dan Hicks?!". As someone who is bi-polar being scared of yourself has a special meaning. Thank you, Thomas!
Dan Hicks was one of the all time musical geniuses.
You got that right. 'Payday" is one of my favourite songs, especially every second Friday!
His instrumentals are amazing.
Years later mid 90' s my Mother introduced me to 40's Jazz, Blues, and Swing. Rest in Peace Mom.
This is one of my favorite Dolby songs. I never knew it was a cover. So cool that 31 years after Dolby recorded the cover, he arranged Hicks to perform with him only 16 months before Dan died. Thank you Thomas for again broadening my musical palate.
Same here, no clue it was a cover
Yep same here I just found out today that it isn't Dolby's own work .Grand song
I would recommend finding Hicks' Beatin' the Heat (if you haven't) to hear him cover himself with the help of Rickie Lee Jones. That version is an equal to Dolby's beautiful version.

BUT it was certainly a couple of decades before I heard the original that's for sure.
Me too. I just found out today (2021) that it's a cover.
I first heard this tune when I was 15 years old. I would dream about dancing with my boyfriend in some mysterious tropical bar. Still love it
She's great on that string.. wow
Don Was on bass!!! Wow!!!
NIce! Dan is so funny. Love that man.
Daniel Ivan Hicks. Dan passed away on February 6, 2016, after a two-year battle with cancer, how very sad. After hearing "Jukie's Ball" way back in '69 an have been a fan ever since.

I believe that concert was at Tulagi's on the Hill. 1974 I was back in SF also,
Thank you Dan Hicks for all your music. I’ve been a fan since I first heard your music as a 13 year old in 1971. KPPC. Pasadena underground radio.
Aw that was cool. Dan Hicks is the man. With Thomas Dolby, Don Was and Narada Michael Walden it's unexpectedly nice. Oh and Zoe Keating. Very cool.
Saw dan hicks 1984 @the lone star cafe manhattan, what a performer! Saw sir Thomas 1985 @ radio city music hall do this song! Absolutely magic! Never forget how his music made my life richer, brighter, better!😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
I came for I Scare Myself, and loved it, but what a pleasant surprise Evening Breeze was. What a great performance by all. RIP Dan Hicks.
Wish I had attended this. Kept putting off going to hear Dan hicks :(
And Zoe keating and don was
Fabulous! Dan Hicks was an immortal; he knew how to entertain and make people smile. We were graced by his presence no matter what the venue.
Every time I bartended in Nashville, I would always have I Scare Myself amongst my music. Every night I would play the song, people would come up and ask if this is the Dan Hicks song? I said yes but by Thomas Dolby. They would always love it.
8:46 cello solo!
This song has a deeper message.
I LOVE THOMAS DOLBY!!!! HE IS THE BEST 21CENTURY BARD EVER!!!! I LOVE YOU THOMAS!!!!! I ALWAYS WILL!!!!
just a haunting song with lyrics that evoke so many deep emotions - such a wonderful version by two amazing people
Thoughtful interview by Thomas. Didn't see this one coming!
Dan Hicks and his hot licks were a staple growing up w/ my family.

Dan Hicks is one of my influences. His songs still live in my mind.

So much love in that gathering. Thanks so much for sharing it!
Thank you Sir Thomas, (you have earned it) as times get more complicated and people forget that there is more to life than the left or right, that there are ups and downs, and the drummer deserves his shining moment of glory, right after the cellist. Dan Hicks is an example to learn in an easy way music! And then so beautiful! Well few know him...everybody should listen to him!
I can only imagine how much money Mr. Dolby’s (and those that came after him) version of this song has made for Dan over the years. Also fortunate that the crazy radio scene in Austin in the 70’s would play Dan Hicks music quite frequently.
I have my headphones on. This is Magic.
Had the good fortune to see him perform several times!
Great song from great album.
When I consider an original song and a cover, this is a favorite of mine. Indeed, haunting, nuanced, sublime.
Wow, what a great performance.
My favorite Dan Hicks song since I first bought the album when it came out. Nice to hear Dolby’s contribution with excellent players.
We cover the Thomas Dolby version, but I still love the original. Dan Hicks was another hero of mine, sadly, gone beyond.
Yes, thanks for keeping this music out there. I was a fan of Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks since the early '70s, a big fan.......
Whoa! That is a lot of talent to fit onto one small stage...
Sad this video was not produced better, it is a wonderful song and why can I barely hear Zoe on the cello? She is a wonderful cellist. Wish I could have heard her better.

Thanks for this .. a true original and his music took us where no others did … ✌️
RIP Dan Hicks!

Beautiful song. Fabulous cover. What a gem.
The Chapped Lips (with me) opened for Dan at Hunts in Burlington Vt way back in the day. He was solo but it was an amazing show. Great guitar and he was incredibly funny
This was a lovely thing to come upon. Thanks.
What a treasured performance. Thank you for preserving it.
I do miss Syd Page's searing solo with the the Lickettes, though.

Astounding
I love Dan Hicks. T Dolby's cover of this tune is awesome. The cello added so much to this proformace. On Dan's last album he did a version of I scare myself with Ricky Lee Jones and a camera winder Google it.
Lovely
Smashing! Always loved this cover Thomas. I was rapt. A bit of scat from Dan as a bonus toward the end, yeah.
