The most overlooked band ever.
Such a great band and such an original sound....miss them
agree, me too. can you imagine this band finding an audience today. No way.
I miss Dan Hicks! What a loss. 😢
I will never stop missing Dan Hicks rest in peace
Ha! LOVE YOU DEB LYONS!! this is one of my most proudest moments!!!!! With Dan Hicks! Dreams do come true!
Julee Cruise love you Julee
Saw Dan Hicks in Cotati, CA waaay back in 73. You are missed Dan. Your music was in a class all by itself!!!
Love you Julee, totally forever!
Nothing better than Dan Hicks. Great song, great musicians. Nobody was putting out this sound at the time. Lots of Western swing was out but nobody had this sound. Excellent!!
Flew up to Sacramento to see Dan Hicks in 2005 ish. Small venue, he was great and still had a deep flexible voice. Good sense of humor and a really fun evening. Seeing him was on my lifetime list.
When it comes to originality no band can ever compete with DH&HL's
I miss Dan Hicks 😢
One of the greatest songs from the sixties..A timeless classic without any of that psychedelic nonsense. Just brilliant!
I saw Dan at The Banjo Palace in Vancouvers Gastown in 73 where they had a model T ford upside down on the cieling and the actual brick wall in the pisser that the St Valentines day masacre was pockmarked with 45 caliber bullet holes from where Al Capones boys shot up Bugsey Morans crew. Pissed on that wall and could put a finger in a bullet hole right there. Dan was a breath of fresh air and turned me on to a new style of music I had never heard before. Whiskey barrels for tables and tops covered in peanuts in the shell and peanut shells all over the floor and good cheap beer and Dan singin his ass off. A wonderfull night. I stayed till everybody was gone and talked with Dan for awhile while he put his equipment together. I was mighty impressed by this amazing character. Loved you Danny boy. Thanks for the music and your good nature. RIP
LOOOOVE Dan Hicks with or without his Hot Licks. This is a wonderful grouping on Night Music. Sanborn and the others are pros, wonderful musicians.
Hey, Deb, that's you on vocals! Thanks for posting this!
I’ve always loved that song. It was part of my personal soundscape back then.
what a fun version this is....
Maybe the greatest love song ever written !
I remember hearing this song as an adolescent late at night on the local “underground” FM radio station in Pasadena, CA (KPPC). Haunting for a child then.
David Sanborn is a great legendary session sax player . He pulls it off seemingly so effortlessly , i hate him . its like he's never paid enough dues . And he's handsome and has thick full hair . i hate him even more
Listening since 1972. Soulful fun.
Only heard the Thomas Dolby cover before - but the original is total perfection also. Wow!
If you haven't seen the 25 minute live session where Dolby performs 'I Scare Myself' and conducts a great interview with Dan Hicks backed by a 3-piece ensemble of awesome musicians (Cellist Zoë Keating delivers a powerful performance) at the Mill Valley Film Festival in 2014 you must! ua-cam.com/video/xyq-Wj0QUpE/v-deo.html
First show I ever saw I was 12. This made me cry…
I was a lil ascared at first but then it was like ...beautiful, man.
yes..........1995 i would think ..! with David Sanborn MC in the show! RIP to Dan!
I didn’t know David Sanborn played with Dan Hicks. A great cut!
Night Music was such a great show. The artists were all eclectic and so interesting.
Highly underrated....
He was the David Byrne of the his time.
saw him several times over the years. a fan since 72.
Just love this song. And farewell, David Sanborn.
Superb. RIP Dan
I always loved this tune. Nice soprano sax by the host
Loved DH and the Hot licks … all of their songs !!
Great post!
RIP Mr. Hicks.
One of the best music shows on TV, ever.
Live this song. Swing it!
Dan said he wrote the song because he is capable to have a tongue that hurts others from what he is able to say..he scares himself.
Nice find, fantastic performance. Wish it was longer.
Smooth.
Dear Deb, Listening to the Hot Licks always made me want to be a backup singer! ❤️
He understood music, and put as many acoustic instruments in his songs as he could.
First heard this song, and them in 1972 in SanFran. How does one categorize this unique music ? Well, one doesn't as its Unique. You may name a few of the influences, American Jazz, Folk etc etc but the sound stays simply unique and to be enjoyed by our compound ears. Enjoy
Guerilla gypsy jazz
Well said, feels just right
I also saw "Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks" in about '72. It was in a small venue in Cotati (spelling ?), CA called the "Inn of the Beginning". Dan was an unbelievably talented musician and so much fun to watch & listen to (especially 'stoned - Haha). He is sorely missed!!!
Well put even if gypsy is now considered a bad word.
Wonderful group of musicians and singers. (Fan of Julee Cruise!) But as Dan himself said on a few occasions when I saw him… there are songs he doesn’t feel right doing without Sid, John, Jamie, Mary Ann, and Naomi.
Happy 4th of Julli~yard
Y'all....
Does anyone know the year of this performance? Many thanks!
According to the website Brooklyn Vegan it was 1989. The list of the acts for the couple years it was on is pretty jaw-dropping.
You didn't see Dan with a wind instrument very often. It's a shane, because a clarinet player would have been a good addition to the group.
The bass player has a come-hither look going on. Hubba hubba
How tall was Dan Hicks? Love their music.
Julee Cruise!
Hey Deb! Deb here. Wish I could see what year this is. Looks like 60s? Where was this show located? And... Which Chick are you?!?! Thanks a million!
Looks like it was probably 1990

I much enjoyed its brief stint. Eclectic indeed!
hicks one of the original Charlatans....the first psychedelic San Fran band
He is known as the first hippie
Very nice, but not the Hot Licks with the Lickettes.
This is like Hicks covering himself.
Sounded good to me
I prefer the slower tempo of the record version.
HEHEHE
Lyon waiting in the Bushes
The Lick-ettes!
