OK, now you should check out "Echoes" live at Pompeii, 1971. When they were young, a classic performance in an ancient Roman amphitheater in Pompeii, Italy, where a volcano destroyed the city in 79 A.D. In "One of These Days", Nick Mason (drummer) says "One of these days I'm going to cut you into little pieces." In "Fearless" you hear the crowd at a Liverpool soccer match singing "You'll Never Walk Alone." David Gilmour once described Echoes as a musical conversation between himself and Rick Wright (keyboard player). After Rick passed in 2008, he wouldn't perform the song anymore.

The solitary lyric in 'One Of These Days' is "One of these days, I'm going to cut you into little pieces.". The story goes that the band was working in studio on a very complex tape effect and it was giving them trouble. Then one of the members screamed the line at the tape in exasperation. Don't know how true it is but it's one of my all time favourite numbers!

What is known by Floyd as the seagull sound in Echoes was discovered by accident when daves wah wah effects pedel was plugged in through his guitar the wrong way round. The in and out Jack's on the pedal were plugged in with the IN cable in the OUT socket and The OUT cable in the IN socket by mistake, dave used his guitar volume controls to manipulate the sound that was produced through the amplifier and speakers.

I was born in Seattle in 1974. I was 16 when grunge hit. I had the opportunity to see all the best shows from the bands of the early 90s. But one band to me always was the GOAT. PF... At age 18 in 1992 I got a PF tattoo on my shoulderblade of an image from The Wall. A couple years later in 1994 I traveled to Vancouver BC to see two shows on the Pulse tour... OMFG... So in 2005 when they got together to play Live8 I went. David's last tour in 2015 I was at the first show in Brighton two weeks before the album dropped. I have been to see Roger play three times, The Wall, Us & Them, and This Is Not A Drill. And I went to see Nick in Miami. BUT THIS SATURDAY MORNING, I will be flying to NYC to see the last show of David's current tour on Sunday. This will be the 5th time I have seen David play, but the first time in the USA. I remember sitting on a bus on a band trip age 16 with several hours to kill and a kid gave me his copy of The Wall to listen to... I didn't know you could do that with music. It changed my life... Be ready before you dive in, or you'll be stuck drowning and clawing the thin ice...

That performance can get emotional when you see them looking over to one another every now and then. They both knew they would never play that piece together again. This was truly a special piece of music that, over the years, became to mean so much between David and Richard. They had a bond that grew tighter over time. (Guitar and Keys.) (Drums and Bass) In most bands, these elements bounce off one another to keep time. When I listen to Pink Floyd, it is the ONLY time I wish Mankind could be Immortal. R I P Richard Wright 😢

‘Echoes’ has the most poignant and moving lyrics ever written for ANY song. Pink Floyd’s message of empathy towards ALL of mankind is prevalent throughout a lot of their work and there is no better an example than is extolled within this extended masterpiece with the words ‘Strangers passing in the street, by chance two separate glances meet, and I am you and what I see is me’.

Another great reaction, and thanks for your honest emotions. I have never seen anyone have a reaction like that to Fearless - very intriguing, and good on ya. If you do The Wall album next, be aware it's a double album and is a full concept album with a complete story. Please do some research into what the album is about before listening to it, and while you're at it, also do some background info into the song Comfortably Numb, just to understand it better - it is one of their best known and technically great songs. Well done.

You have good taste. Fearless has long been one of my Floyd favorites. The juxtaposition with the Liverpool crowd singing their trademark "You'll Never Walk Alone" is one of the most startling and beautiful things in music.
You can tell that the boys were still casting about for their identity as of 1971, still periodically dipping back into Syd's fey style. I think Dark Side, the next year, surprised even them, but from then on they stuck to that path. Thank God.
Floyd is NOT for anyone with ADHD, needing to move on to the next peak experience RIGHT NOW. They are patient in their buildup, and reward any listener willing to buy into it.
One thing you keep noticing, but largely at a subliminal level is just how important Rick Wright's keyboards were to their sound and psychological impact. you've noticed that all four of them have extensive jazz backgrounds. It shows up all throughout their music, especially the sax solo in Money.
The end of Echoes is really some bad Juju, almost suggestive of Voodoo. "You can't do this to black folks" is perfect and funny as Hell. Well done.
Later, when Roger Waters began to lose his mind, his treatment of Rick was shameful. As far as I know, he never apologized.

One last experience that I'd like to share!!
The year was 1975 I was 18 years old and going to my first concert which was Pink Floyd at an outdoor venue in Jersey City New Jersey called Roosevelt stadium!! They played concerts at that stadium all summer long and I went to that stadium and saw many great bands throughout the 70s!!
But Pink Floyd was touring for I believe the Animals album and they did a lot of material from Dark Side and Meddle!!
Being an 18 year old and being the mid-70s of course I partake in some hallucinogenic!!
Well by the time Floyd started the song Echoes I was peaking on my acid trip!! At that time Pink Floyd had what they called a quadraphonic setup where they had 2 speaker banks on stage facing the crowd that was on the field and another set of speaker Banks BEHIND the crowd facing towards the stage where they could make the sound go around in a complete circle if you were down on the field, which I was!! Well during the crazy sound part of Echoes they started to do a surround sound type of deal where the sound was going around all four speakers and starting to go faster and faster!!
I was beginning to hallucinate that I was in a giant flying saucer that was getting ready to take off and just when I was about to start to freak OUT they broke back into the mellow part of the song that I recognized and it was almost as if it was designed exactly for my trip!!!😮😮😮
I know it probably wasn't I know I'm crazy but it really worked out that way and it was one of the craziest experiences at a concert that I've ever had in my life!!!!❤🎉

Just so you know, Mr Gilmour stands flat-footed, head down, barely moves from one spot, and lets his fingers and the strings do all the talking. No traditional rock and roll antics here. This is serious big boy music performed by extremely talented musicians who take their craft very seriously. Gilmour is considered one of the best guitarists of all time. For him it's all about the emotion and feeling, not about him and jumping around. There is a live Pompeii version of this (1&2) where you can see them in action... and an even better live version from 2006, the last time it was played live in its entirety. Richard Wright, the brilliant keyboardist and co-vocalist on this, passed away shortly after and Gilmour said he would never play it again without him.

Pink Floyd was named after two blues musicians, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council, so you'll certainly hear the blues influence, but, as you've noticed, there's also the rock and psychedelic parts as well. Pink Floyd is one of the bestselling musical artists of all time, in the top ten, right up there with The Beatles, Elvis, and Michael Jackson. Meddle is where Floyd began to develop the sound it was known for. But if you really want your mind blown, you'll have to listen to Dark Side of the Moon, Animals, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall. The rabbit hole is deep. Enjoy.

Hi again... Ur 60 year olds back. I'm a drummer, and have played every zep song from every album, cassette, and CD a few hundred times each over the many years. Every word, note, and songs blueprinted in my mind and soul. As many gen-re that are out there that we grow up to. Zeppelin grabs u, hugs ur very soul and makes u forget EVERY OTHER GEN-RE U EVER KNOWN...magical band, and TOP SHELF. Been my favorite band my entire life.....😊 Masters of the art!! The third and forth songs were full of back masking...they played a lot of music backwards... U can really hear it in the backwards whistling...

The album cover is a human ear submerged water. Pink Floyd formed in London in 1965. They were pioneers of the whole psychedelic rock scene along with Iron Butterfly, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix and Jefferson Airplane. The Dark Side of the Moon in 1973 put them on the global map. Hit a lot of people out of nowhere who'd never heard of them up til then. Their first two albums featured their former frontman Syd Barrett, who is what Shine On You Crazy Diamond was written about. By the way, Fearless is one of my favorites, too.

Yes, David's solo album, put together in his home studio, with some drum machines like the single; no more magic, no more atmospheric images, 80s pop.
Division Bell at least has one or two good “nostalgic songs” with transitions 😉✌.

To answer your question around the 44:30 mark - That’s a guitar, plugged into a wah wah pedal backwards (guitar output to pedal output, pedal input to amp input) which creates a weird feedback loop, which you then use the tone knob on the guitar to make it scream. A sound that happened due to a studio wiring accident, but turned out to be one of Gilmour’s freakiest sounds. It also appears on parts of The Wall album.

Everyone here will say "Live In Pompeii" or "Live In Gdansk", but there are some fabulous less well known versions of Echoes. Look for "Live At The Empire Pool, Wembley" for a great sax part, and you can also see Nick Mason and Guy Pratt perform this song live on the Saucerful of Secrets tour - as recently as July this year, taking it back to its early 70s vibe!
And then look for "Nothing Part 14".

These units have played all the PF albums as I got them - and Live Aid on the day, simucast broadcast on TV and HiFi FM radio. Took a day off work for that one.
PPS the front cover is an ear, with ripples of water
    :) all good fun!

The high pitched screeching sound you thought might be hyenas is actually called a seagull sound effect. Gilmour came across it by accident when he mistakenly plugged his wah-wah pedal in backwards. Genius that he is, he figured out how to incorporate it in the soundscape of the Echoes transition section.

Gilmour plugged his guitar into an effects pedal the wrong way round and the rest is ..... if you get a chance,, watch the George Greenough film about catching surf "tubes" on camera, years before GoPro's etc. Echoes is played over the film and it's sublime!
