Hey Captain Joe, we are considering re-gelcoating our 25 Bertram. I really hope you decide to re-gelcoat this little boat using the gelcoater so that we can use your video as a guide. Also, I think a nice two tone would look great. :)
Thank you for all your time and expertise Joe. You have made a huge difference in my boat restoration project. ( 1980 Steury houseboat sitting in the desert for 27 years.) Merry Christmas to our UA-cam hero!
One of the best channels and UA-camr! Great content and someone who really knows his craft and is kind enough to share it. Idea for a future project: A deck box. They are pretty expensive to buy, but shouldn’t be that complex to DIY. Thanks for all your amazing content and for helping me fix a problem. Your advice was perfect and the work now looks great. Cheers from snowy Canada! 🇨🇦
Great video as always. I normally use the 3M Accuspray HGP pressurized cup gun with a 2.0 tip. It atomizes and sprays gelcoat very well, even when upside down. It will also do a great job of spraying gelcoat with nonskid in it. When the gelcoat is mixed with Duratec, I will use a 1.8 tip and get a very smooth finish. Depending on the application, it can be good enough as is. Normally, I like a glass smooth surface and will sand and polish.
The fact that you can spray upside down with the 3m can be a big advantage sometimes. But the large 4.8 mm tip, and the great price point on this rig definitely make it a great option for a lot of folks. Thanks for sharing your experience with the channel and for watching!
I’d really like to see Algrip on it.I’ll probably be spraying Algrip over my red on mine. Add some color to it. And the 4 stroke. Gonna look killa Joe!
2 tone gelcoat, show us how to spray the bottom without flipping the boat, also would be curious about the entire setup from compressor with cfm ratings and including hose sizes and fittings up to the gun
Hey, Joe & Logan! Thanks for showcasing that spray gun. I’ll definitely be purchasing one VERY soon. Also, the “2-tone” idea for the project boat has MY vote! I think that would look outstanding. Merry Christmas!
Thanks, Captain Joe & Logan. very informative. I had my own painting company for 23 years. Love the sprayed look. Will this make the sanding easier than the brush and roll?
Thanks for watching, I think you'll be impressed with the finish that the Gelcoater produces. It's definitely going to be smoother than rolled or brushed. Appreciate you watching!
Merry Christmas Joe Wishing you everything you wish for yourself and your family in the New Year. Looking forward to next year's tutorials and projects. London UK
Thanks for the tip Joe. Hard to find large bore gelcoat cannons. Had to drill out one of my old production Sata guns to 4mm. Works good enough, especially when using duratec in final coat, but looking forward to trying out this gun. Cheers and thanks!
Would love to see you spray it in a color gelcoat if you can do that. I'm not a fan of the splatter paint inside, it's kinda "busy" for me but super interested to see how you finish it out.
Good looking sprayer , better than the cheap Harbor Freight as their tips are too small for gelcoat. Hey a trick I like to do is use a pump ( epoxy type) for dispensing smaller amounts of acetone from a gallon can. Really handy when you have gloves hands etc. Cheers Warren
Excellent. Just getting ready to spray my deck and center console and was dreading getting rid of the orange peel. Definitely have to try. I also purchased all grip in the darker color for the hull . Expensive but after seeing the results from a few boats at the local yard seems to be a good choice. I'll wait and watch you to see how it sprays your console. Thanks for sharing . Aloha 🤙
Omg a Game Changer as always fantastic content and yeah great price point as i'm in the middle of refitting my 40 ftr and the inside really needs a good paint job and sorry but I my prefer spraying even in close quaters thanks again and Happiest of Holidays 😃
That's a great price, considering what you get! I would recommend getting another cap and needle for a little more, and give yourself some options. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Great video and review. Would love to see you do a 2 tone gel coat respray on the hull side and bottom. It would be nice to see how you handle the lines. Merry Christmas to you and family
I finally found a source for a 4.0+ mm tip-this is amazing! Just picked one up for some spraying. As always, fantastic work, my friend-I can't thank you enough. Now I can go easy on the Duratec Clear Hi-Gloss Gel Coat Additive for thinning and more!
Do the grey with black splatter on the inside of the project boat. I’m grinding my old gel coat off now and going back with grey gel coat and black/white splatter. Would like to see how you do it. I’ll probably do mine before you get that far though. Great videos.
Thanks for the feedback! I think it's a great rig for anyone that's interested in spraying gelcoat or high-build Primers, especially for the price point!
Perfect timing for me, it looks like there isn’t a lot of overspray. Do I need to rent a paint booth? Maybe find an inflatable one? I’m about to do the entire top of an 18 foot.
The gelcoat on the super structure on my 30- feet sailboat, nearly 50 years old, is worn down. Should I use paint or gel coat to repair. Is it possible to roll and tip gel coat on or is it necessary to spray it on? Thanks for great videos.
There are pros and cons to each product. I have videos here on the channel talking about each one extensively. Maybe they will help. Thanks for watching!
Hi Captain Joe! I wish I had known about that spray rig sooner! Looks great! As for the boat finish I would like to see an Awlgrip 2 part (catalyzed) paint job as I have never had any actual experience with it. What are your thoughts on longevity between Awlgrip and a re-gelcoat job? Obviously gel coat is much better if you can apply it while the boat is being constructed initially since it will crosslink into the resin of the hull and last for many decades. Unfortunately after the fact the chemical bond doesn't happen and you are relying on the mechanical adhesion of the gelcoat which is not great. Thank you for another great video! Take care and all the best from California!🧡
Thanks for the content suggestions! There are pros and cons to both systems for sure. Gelcoat is great for overall durability, but ease of application and cosmetics would probably lean towards Awlgrip. With proper surface prep, secondary bonding issues are pretty rare, in most cases. I may try to make a video discussing that topic for you all in the future if there is enough interest. Thanks so much for watching and your continued support of the channel!
Hello Joe, great videos as always. Curious; can you elaborate on the difference in overspray re; paint vs gelcoat? Is gelcoat so thick I can get away spraying my boats hull inside my RV storage without laying a coat of gelcoat on everything in the room? I know I could not get away with that using paint. LOL… I’d like to spray gelcoat, but I’m preparing to roll and tip….with hours and hours of sanding of course! BTW, it’s a little 19’ 6” blue-water double-ender. So lots of sanding, isn’t really that much! Ha! - Thanks for what you do!
You should get less overspray with gelcoat, than paint, but you would probably still want to take some precautions with overspray. For the cost of the gelcoater, I would seriously consider getting one. I hope this helps, and I wish you all the best with your double-ender!
In my past I have noticed that when you run any abrasive material through your spray gun it wears it out I always have one gun for that so I don’t ruin my good finishing gun just saying

a two-tone on the project boat would be nice to share your knowledge on the details behind making it with different colors!
I agree, a two-tone gelcoat job would look fantastic! I’ll keep that in mind!

Thanks so much for the kinds words and for watching all of the way from London in the UK 🇬🇧!
I would love to see a grey gel coat on the sides of the boat with a white top cap. I’m getting ready to do the same thing to my small skiff.
Thanks for the idea, I think that would look great! Appreciate you watching!
Here’s a vote for re-gel coat. Something like white on the bottom and sea foam or maybe light blue above the waterline.
That would look nice! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!

Great tip. Thanks for sharing! Yep, it's a great spray rig, especially for the money.
Light gray bottom navy side light gray interior with navy splatter I think would look awesome.
Thanks for the idea, I like how creative you're thinking with the color choices!

Love your videos, Thank you for teaching and sharing your tips, I like the idea of doing the hull in all gray , one color,
I think a single color hull can look really sharp! Thanks for watching!

I use it and like it. It is far better than the ES 860 Amazon one everyone uses. It was a bit hard to find.

Be careful holding the tip it can blow the lid off the cup
