Jaguar V12 5.3L Series 3 HE in an AC Cobra Fuel injection Jenvey throttle body conversion

  • This is a general guide to how I converted my Jaguar V12 5.3L series 3 engine from carbs to fuel injection with Jenvey throttle bodies and Emerald m3d electronics.
    This is not a professional comprehensive guide as to 'how to' and if you are unsure please seek advice from a professional mechanic.
    It explains my process with a lot of the hard elbow grease cut out otherwise the video would be 3 weeks long! Its just a visual companion guide to the detailed instructions provided by Jenvey Dynamics and Emerald m3d.
    I hope its of some use as I was daunted and overwhelmed when it all first arrived and not having a clue where it all goes!
    Also be prepared for some fabricating of brackets and some problem solving.
    Once youve got what all the parts do it actually boils down to how youre going to attach them in the best way possible.
    IF you have any questions please write in the comments section
    One final word is make sure that the marelli sensor (This is the hardest sensor to mount.)has been properly located in the correct position mentioned in the instructions provided. If this isnt or you are unsure please do not start the engine and get a professional in before turning the ignition or get the car trailered to an engine specialist like Emerald who will adjust your work and make it right!

    I have a 1973 XJ12 that I've converted to use Webers but I really don't like the standard ignition so I wrote my own for a PIC18F4550 micro. It uses absolute position sensors on the ends of the cams (got that idea from Ferrari) to decide when to fire the ignition. It has vacuum and water temp sensors to modify the spark map.
    I decided to use two V6 coil packs and I went with the ones from the Vauxhall Omega (non-oem about £30 each).
    Be careful with that vacuum sensor hose you installed. You've used soft silicone tube which will get even softer as it heats up.
    Soft tubing is not a good idea to use as the vacuum can collapse the hose.
    It may be absolutely fine but if your engine misbehaves at higher RPM (ie higher vacuum) it is something to consider.

    I remember the Dax Cobra kits from back in the day. I believe their thinking was that, if you were buying a Jag as a donor car for the suspension and switchgear (plus a few bits and bobs from things like the Triumph Dolomite), then you'd end up with a body shell (usually full of rust - not like you'll buy a pristine example if you're just stripping it for parts.) But you'd often also be left with that lovely V12 engine, which seemed to the blokes at Dax like such a wasted opportunity. And so it wasn't wasted after all. 😁

    A very nice sounding engine but i have a couple of comments that you might be interested in:
    1) The vacuum pipe I suggest be substituted for a metal one as the silicone(?) based pipe will soften when the under bonnet gets hot and the pipe will collapse under vacuum, which will cause unfathomable problems.
    2) The gauze induction trumpet filters are not free flowing and will restrict the intake as has been shown on dyno testing, beside not filtering anything except stones. I suggest you reinstall the K&N Filters as they are virtually non-restrictive and are very effective on filtration.

    • @AlbydickBall
      @AlbydickBall  Рік тому

      Hi Clive! Thanks for taking the time to comment. And thanks for compliment of the nice sounded motor! Ah yes that’s great advice. As I said I’m no mechanic so my knowledge is limited. I hope I haven’t mislead anyone. Yes they are silicon and yes it gets hot under there and yes actually that sounds completely logical!! They get hot then soft and then collapse.
      I understand what you’re saying about the filters as they’re just effective enough to stop rocks and birds!! Actually and weirdly enough Keith and Dave at Emerald were interested to see how restrictive they were so we did a run without them on and there was negligible difference ! Same HP output at 6000rpm!! But yes the K&N would be the better choice (sold them already though! Doh!) many thanks :)

      @AlbydickBall  Рік тому

      @@AlbydickBall Thanks for the prompt reply. The tests that I saw were on performance V8s where there was a noticeable increase in torque and horse power with open trumpets. It may be that your V12 can only use the air flow equal to that through the restricted inlets so that removing them will make no difference. Other tests have shown that the K&N filters are a very small restriction to flow especially where they are combined with trumpets, even F1 teams use them and they have the luxury of frequent engine builds. For a road car then filters + trumpets are the best solution.
      As you have sold the previous filters why not fabricate an air box for each bank of throttle bodies and stick a K&N on the end of each one? That way you could retain the trumpets and have an efficient inlet system for the price of just two filters?
      The gauze that is used for these trumpets actually reduces the free air area i.e. the area of the open trumpet down to 25-30% so you can see that it is a significant restriction, notwithstanding that the design of the trumpet, which is bell mouthed, shapes the inlet air to create as far as possible a laminar flow as well as being accounted for in the tuned length of the intake. The gauze stops that laminar flow from being produced by creating small individual streams of air that then have to combine in a turbulent way to be sucked into the bore - not very efficient.
      Keep up the good work and lets see and hear the final result?

    • @AlbydickBall
      @AlbydickBall  Рік тому

      Ok wow yes you definitely know what you’re talking about! Actually Jenvey offered a ‘foam’ filter that slots over the trumpets to produce that effect you were talking about but unfortunately the space under the bonnet is so restrictive it didn’t fit! Yes I can definitely see how it should restrict air flow and yup the V12 can only use a certain amount of air through the inlets , it having more inlets than a v8 that size so perhaps it’s the air intake area is already larger than it needs to be? I’m just guessing!!
      Yes the result is at the end of the video! It ran perfect! Very surprised!
      It sounds like you’re an engineer!! Haha

      @@AlbydickBall Absolutely spot on. I would use Kunifer (CuNi) pipe that can be had in various internal diameters 4, 6, 8mm for brake, clutch and diesel injector pipes etc to suit your application, its also impervious to the nasty ethanol based fuel we now have (although I only use high octane, which in the Midlands is generally ethanol free) I would use your rubber hose to make the short connections at each end that will allow movement between engine and chassis fixed components. You could also use stainless steel, aluminium or copper minibore that can be had with a chrome finish (from plumbers merchants) but these are not as easy to form as Kunifer. (Kunifer can be polished to provide a light bronze colour).
      The problem with collapsed vacuum pipes I have seen many times where they were used on the carb/vacuum advance on dizzys, where people used any old plastic pipe they had lying around. The manufacturers used a specially hard pipe that was resistant to collapse and softening.

    I appreciate your enthusiasm and approach. For a conversion using the Jenvey parts shown, what is the net height from say the cam covers to the top of the filters please.
    This would help to understand whether this is viable for a XJ12 saloon...
    Suggestion...ask your MoT station to give an opinion on the car's brakes...[on one of the Autopia episodes the engine conversion was a success...but the car has no brakes to speak of !].

    • @AlbydickBall
      @AlbydickBall  Рік тому

      Hi, happy new year! Thanks for the comment. Yes I’ll measure the height to see if it’s a viable option. Although actually if you phone up Jenvey they would probably know the compatibility for the XJ12 and also have the correct solutions. I’d imagine this set up would work in the saloon as after all it was made with that engine and car in mind but I’ll let you know anyway the height !
      So yes strangely enough I had had problems with the brakes (owned the car for 5 years) and they were sticking and not great so I replaced the whole braking system from pads to servos and now it stops on a dime almost instantly. The brakes are also from the xj12 car.
      What was the problem with the brakes? Did they foul up after the conversion? Or just generally bad on the cobra?

    • @Andrew-vx2ls
      @Andrew-vx2ls Рік тому

      @@AlbydickBall Thanks. My point on the brakes is that big power needs reliable stopping power especially on a car that is not used as much as a "daily". A bit lazy? The XJS do come with the GM350 auto and it is a power stealing slush box. I had been researching ways to get more power but really swapping that 350bfor a 5 speed manual allegedly completely changes the car.

    Are Rover 3.5/4.0 V8s popular with Cobra builders in GB? Here in the US it's just Fords or GB LS engines, good choices but some might consider them too powerful. Saner heads lean towards 300HP. A light V8 or even a 3.8l V6 would be plenty imho. I'm a fan of the Buick/Olds/Pontiac 215 ci engine, I actually had an Olds 215 that I was going to put into a Volvo P1800S back in the late '90s, never happened. Seems like the 3.5 with around 250hp would make for a good engine in a 289 FIA Cobra kit.

      Yeah the rover V8s are popular (they were GMs right originally?) but England being all quaint and everything this was the largest engine that we could get our hands on for years so there’s loads of them about and cheap! £500. The v12 jag at the time was a massive step up but now we enter modern times where we’ve caught up and now have big engines. Im also a recent fan of BOP!! Hi thanks for posting this video you don’t see a lot really for the jag v12, I have some questions I’ve had the same set up in a dax cobra I’ve sold the cobra minus the engine & I’m now installing that in a 1965 jag mk2 I’ve run the Weber’s for a few years although they have been reliable I feel the way you have gone it the only way forward for better drivability etc,
    Would you mind sharing the cost involved with this conversation?
    Also who provided the toothed ring you braised on for the sensor pick up?
    I felt you must have been happy with the hp gain it sounded amazing I noticed your exhaust manifolds but have you had any more mods?
    Lightened flywheel or cams?
    Was there a problem with detonation on the rolling road was that fuel quality related? And did you rectify that?
    What is the diff ratio & does it cruise relaxed? My cob was 2.88 I felt it was to long legged with the v12 & getrag 265 box.
    How did you determine the length of the velocity stack or was it just because of bonnet restrictions?
    Also do you have a cros section in your exhaust set up.
    I’m sorry for all the questions but I’d be super grateful if you take the time to answer as it would help me tremendously!!

      Hello Darren! Yeah you’re right when I first started this project there was no help on the internet or UA-cam so really had to do some head scratching. Oh wow so you had a dax with the V12! Did you like it? Since I changed to ITB it’s a different beast and way quicker and way more dangerous! Haha! Although I was coming from knackered down webers that had a massive flat spot between 1500 and 3000rpm which just made it unenjoyable to ride. So I’m gonna answer your questions in parts!
      So yes it’s expensive annoyingly but hate to be defeated.
      From Emerald came The ecu wiring , sensors, trigger wheel, 2 coil packs,bespoke loom,HT leads about £2K, (trigger wheel was £35). Got the open one and then lathed it out by 5mm to fit outside of the crank pulley and then braised. That cost me nothing as I did it. They can do the entire conversion (if you provide the throttle bodies)for £5K or if you fit the throttle bodies and the plumbing then roughly £3K. There’s a guy they know that charges £1K to fit the trigger wheel and meralli sensor (which I think was a bit steep!)Then the mapping which I think was £450
      So now the cost of the ITBs from Jenvey dynamics which come in just under £4K
      So the cost of you want to do all the work yourself which actually as it turned out wasn’t too bad and actually really enjoyed it… is roughly £6500 all in for parts and mapping. Mine was purchased about 2 years ago so might be a bit more north of that. If you’re going to get someone to do it it would probably be just shy of £9k i reckon! Crazy money!
      Yes well happy with HP increase! It was crazy the amount! It pre detonated At 6000 rpm so still had 1000rpm to go which would of added on a other 20 ho to the map. The pre det was really just the age of the engine and they didn’t want to push it. It happens a lot on the rolling road and they were very professional and played it safe.
      Yes so no more mods on the car.
      The velocity stacks were limited by as you correctly said bonnet height. They recommended higher ones which would of been cool to stick em out the bonnet but like to keep things tidy!!:)
      Sorry don’t know the diff ratio but cursing it is insane! 70 mph it’s 1500 rpm in 5th and something like 20-25 mpg and will pick up quickly all the way to 140mph. What you saw on the vid on the rolling road was that exact time from 60-140mph in 5th-impressive.
      Sorry not too sure what you mean by cross section set up in the exhaust? Happy to answer more questions and hopefully that’s all you asked. If I missed anything let me know.
      Keith and Dave at emerald we’re brilliant. They guided me all the way and the email thread between me and them was soooo long I’m surprised they kept answering me!! Haha

      @@AlbydickBall wow actuali a lot of money.....i am in the midle of a revision of a overheaded engine main bearings look good ( replace them any way) head gasket not burnt throuh. only the smel off the oil tels a tail of overhead. i wand to keep the weber carbs ( are like new only did one race) gues the overheating was due to false air sucking , somewere around the carb. joints.... there were some bolds not tightend at al.... i was wondering aboud only changing the ignition to a coilpack....some advice would be apreciated

      @@gerardharings9963 hi Gerard! Yes it does smell like you have a small overheating issue but these V12s do run hot and have a working temp of around 94 degrees C. I’m not a mechanic but more air coming in wouldnt neccesarily mean it will run hotter. If anything it will run lean. But an unregulated intake of air would make the engine run roughly and that would make it run hotter as it won’t be running efficiently.
      Check your spark plugs. If they are fowled black then you’re running rich and running hotter.
      Coil packs won’t work on your engine unless you have an ECU and I’m guessing you don’t seeing as you’re running carbs still. If you mean electronic ignition instead of the standard distributor ignition than yes that will make run a bit more efficiently and hence drop the running temp marginally.
      As I said I’m not a pro and someone will correct me but that above is my experience!:)
