This is awesome - and super helpful! Every other resource I've found for self-developing 8mm film has been overly complicated. Excited to try this out! :)
i think if it was done in proper film tank like LOMO or something, resoults would be much better. the scratches comes from having the film in hand. When i was experimenting with caffenool and with overexposed film i had i've noticed that is very easly to get rid of film emulsion.
Great video dig those results! I haven't had a chance to develop with beer but I recently had some success with an oregano extract. The Beer definately looks better post apocalyptic style but better.
I never touch the film in a bucket developing method however ive only developed old type G film and its had mixed results ive had either blank rolls or thin images however i suspect my cameras exposure meter is off so im gonna try my hand at my own metering
Yeah to tell you the truth I'm amazed light sensors on cameras like the AE-1 and such work so well after so long, as it's a light sensitive material that's always really "on" but on 8mm cameras (what I have experience with, sadly not with super 8), it's a must to hand meter since the light sensor is so cooked and they're pretty early designs.
@@BadFlashes unfortunately it's Kodachrome, which I'm told is like "impossible" to develop, but if its beer gambit or nothing, I'm going with beer, I always go with beer.....Thanks!
This is really cool! I may try it - when I’m not at home and am staying at uni... (My family and I are muslim, so explaining how I and why I bought a lot of beer would be a little awkward...)
Is it correct that by following these steps the film comes out as a negative? And if I wanted to be possitive (so I can project the image on a wall) I need to do a so called reversal process? Your methode is so lovely simple but if it only gives a negative image on the film I still can not project it. But i'm not sure, so that's why I ask ;) Thanks!
For sure. I feel ya. I’m not sure if this method works on Black and White reversal film I’ve never tried it before actually… maybe something to look into. But I’m sure a quick google would know. Sorry I wasn’t much help
Based on the scans at the end, I'm pretty sure the beer film does come out negative. If you watch the color of the sprocket holes, you can see that the commercially developed half has white sprocket holes, while the beer processed film has black sprocket holes, indicating it was inverted after scanning.
@@BadFlashes It worked! But the negatives are really thin and faded. I'm shooting on Cine8 iso 40, so maybe longer development time is needed? I'll try again with 16mm snippets
Yo, can we get a caffenol recipe sometime? I want to try it to cut down on the toxicity in my darkroom, but am hesitant to give it a go. There are some tutorials online, but mostly text based which is eh. Good stuff as always!
It’s definitely on the list! 😉 and yeah I feel ya. I’ve stated to wear gloves and my mom made me promise to use a mask tooooo ... so yeah I get that haha And thanks ☺️
If you haven't tried it already, don't be afraid to. The coffee needs to be 'freeze-dried instant coffee' (google is your friend), the Soda Crystals should be Sodium Carbonate (we have the green packs of these in the UK, not sure about US. Use pure vitamin c powder (not crushed tablets) and iodised salt. Use the measurements from fstop138.berrange.com/tags/caffenol/ and it should turn out great. 15:00 is a general starting point but you should reduce as you see fit. Good Luck.
Unfortunately not really. I just go by what they say on there website. If I’m not mistaken though, you can agitate the fixer more frequently and that should get a denser negative.
Is it actually a good beer? The film looks a tad under exposed there though chief. If you really want to get into super 8 development at home try looking up zero budget film school on youtube, he has a load of great stuff about doing it at home.
@@BadFlashes Think it's just the raw version of the footage so there will be less contrast and flat shadows etc. The exposure was fine! Cool idea to do it in beer. Wonder if it'd work for Standard 8 film
It seems beer develops Super 8 Film in the same way it has developed me. Scratched, agitated and with half of me still stuck in the box (errr)
😆 you got this! I believe 🙌🏼
You can use an old fashioned mechanical dial kitchen timer. Easy to feel in the dark and set.

awesome! I'm glad that I could help out and not make it crazy complicated! 😊
because of course there's a beer called Super 8
So yummy!

Oh that’s interesting. I’m going to have to look that up. Always like doing crazy stuff. I’m glad you dig the video :)
Watching the way this guy acts feels like a persons imitation of how “UA-camrs” act
Weird … cuz this be me. 🍾
Amazing ! Really love the super 8 and how nostalgic it is 😆
Right!!! It’s so dope
Im glad I subscribed lol. Love your work, especially the more upbeat tone.
Thanks! That makes me warm and fuzzy inside. 🥰
Daaaamn I would love to see some stills of yours beer-veloped! Thanks for the entertaining videos anyway :)
Ahhh awesome. Thanks so much!!! 🥰
Woaahh you freaked me right out with the "Greg" thing 😮
😘
does this work for colored film?
Unfortunately not :/
Where do you buy this beer? I’m looking everywhere and can’t find it 😅
I found it at this small place in LA I think you can look it up on there site.
Love the scratches.
What's stopper and fixer?
Well thank you sir! 😉
Kodak stopping agent ... and generic rapid fixer... nothing fancy
Please tell me this dosent only work on B&W
Unfortunately it only works with black and white 😬
@@BadFlashes ok I know for next time then 🤗

💝💘💕❣️🤎💚🤍💛🖤🧡❤️💜
Thats fkn cool. I would definitely try it for a death metal music video
Thanks!!
Oh hells yeah!!!!!!
i’ve been subscribed for a while, i have yet to be disappointed *everyone liked that*
I’m glad disappointment hasn’t set in... hope I can keep it up 😁
So much character. Love it
Right, it’s bad ass.
You made my Siri go off lol
Hahaha 😝 love that
That scratched up look is a lot like what music videos looked like during the grunge era.
Love grunge!
Hahaha

Well it’s a great excuse!!! Ummm family I’ll just be i the bathroom for a while....
For serious. It has a cool effect 😂
Bad Flashes yeah it looks really cool and is a whole lot cheaper than lab developing... If only Edwin Land’s Polavision took off...
Loved this video. I have 2 cartridges in my fridge that might throw in a bucket one day 🤔🤔🤔
Totally should!!!!! It would be awesome!!!
Will you do another bleach bypass video? Maybe ektar? It could have a really great effect on the very saturated colours of ektar
I definitely plan on doing more Bleaching so we shall see what I put through those crazy baths 🛀😝
does it work with single 8 film?
If it’s reversal film it should

I wonder if this process would also develop Fomapan R100 double 8mm film. HmmMMMmmm
Oh I bet!!! I mean I think haha yeah!
@@BadFlashes Whelp I’m finally going to try it this weekend with double 8mm! If it works out, I’ll make a video about it and give you a shoutout!

The result is not bad, but I think you could improve your agitation method
Yep yep yep, Got to do the hard way first! haha
This is so good!
🥰🥰🥰 Your turn to try it!!!
Does this also work with color negative film?
Nope. Unfortunately it :/
Sort of; you can do it, but you'll get a black and white negative with no color

Develop some 35mm film in beer please
Seems like I can maybe pull that off haha
How do you scan the film?
I get all my stuff scanned at pro8mm.com ... they do good work!
Yo Caleb, do you have some tips for developing street candy? It always turns out pretty flat for me

Are the heads of dogfish a necessary component of super 8 development? Just asking for my vegan friends.
Good news... NO! But for some reason the smell is still there ...

I’m sure it would work with standard 8mm if you stick with the same stock and what not. 👍🏼
Standard 8 is just a different sprocket hole and width. It’s the same film. I maintain it’s underexposed though.
If anything I would say it’s over-exposed but I don’t have much say... it’s an automatic camera... I wish I had control hahaha
Haters will say its staged.
