    I found it helpful to practice positioning the valve covers without the gaskets on and before the Permatex was applied several times to become familiar with the complicated route one must take to clear all of the obstacles. It took a lot of trial and error to figure out the path that one should take and this sort of thing is never in the service manual!
    This video was extremely helpful! If I did it again, I would change out the thermostat while I was in there although I would have had to drain all of the coolant for that step.

    for the VCG to not move, use "permatex high tack" on the gasket to the valve cover.

    Just struggled my way thru this today... thanks for the video.... that drivers side valve cover is a PITA. I got it on the 2nd try! I had moved the OFH out of the way and that gave me more room to move around.

    Thanks for the video Ryan! I just tackled this and I'm still in the process, but the method of getting a pick in between the vacuum line and the EPV was clutch! Took all of 5 min to get it out of there once I started with the pick on it.

    Super helpful video. I just finished my valve cover covers and purge valve. Saved a lot of time. Not really an easy job as you had mentioned.

    Evap purge valve and valve cover gaskets along with VANOS solenoid maintenance is my next job. Great DIY!

    • @piratecustom6029
      @piratecustom6029 5 років тому

      Changíng the Vanos soleonid o-rings is a piece of cake. Just remove the cover (5 bolts) and gently pull out on each soleonid little at a time (with pliers). Once out remove the filters, or whats left of them...Remove all filter material in the "filter windows". Replace o-rings. Refit the "filter". Check the soleonids electrically, check for funny looking soldering points and or "polution" between certain soldering points, I did find something "black" between soldering points that are not supposed to be connected with each other. If these "polutions" are electrically conductive or not Im unable to tell, but I did remove these "polutions" very gently with a flat small screwdriver. Clean out oil-galleries with some kind of solvent and "compressed air". Refit soleonids. Done.

    Great video as always. I had a few more things on my list before the valve cover, plugs, etc. but the car says it needs the Evaporator Purge Valve now. Can you you replace this without removing the valve covers or does that make it much harder than it appeared to be? Thanks.

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  7 місяців тому +1

      The evaporative purge valve (code E8) is located in the S62's valley underneath the intake manifold (plenum). The valve covers do not need to removed to access/replace the purge valve.

  • @mxchris05154
    @mxchris05154 4 роки тому +1

    Great video! I have my ‘03 apart and am wondering if the large intake flange gaskets should be replaced. It seems you left the originals on. What’s your take on those? I would replace them but there’s the effort of removing the fuel rail electrical box

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  4 роки тому

      The gaskets over the throttle bodies? Unless they are cracking/flaking apart, I don't see a reason to replace them. I have removed them before, and did not have to fiddle with the electrical boxes. They are held to the throttle bodies with hose clamps.

    Is an "internally threaded bolt" similar in any way to a "nut" ?

    • @E39Source

      Haha yes sir, it just looked like a bolt and I was surprised to find it to be a combo nut/bolt.

    Im just in the progress of completing the same tasks on one of my car (no replacement of purge valve or ignition coils). Anyway when refitting the valvecover on the drivers side (Left hand drive cars) it makes sense to disconnect the electrical connector to the oilpressureswitch (?) on the oilfilterhousing. There is also some kind of "watervalve" near the oilfilterhousing. This "watervalve" is only slided down in to rubber bushings, just pull it up and use a ziptie to hold in a as a high position as possible. I also removed the big gasket attached to the throttle bodies (hold in place by 4 hose clamps), that made removing and refitting the valve cover a lot easier...Im still to refit the valvecover on the passenger side but it will be easier I believe since it was easy to remove the valvecover on that side...

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  5 років тому

      I did disconnect the electrical connector, yes. But it didn't afford me tons of room. The water (heater) valves can be moved out of the way too, but they weren't an issue for me.

    • @piratecustom6029
      @piratecustom6029 5 років тому

      @@E39Source OK, you must have better skills than me, I was more or less unable to remove the valvecover unless removing the "throttle body gasket". I did unplug the connector to the oilpressureswitch to give me a little more space but mainly to minimize the risk of braking it. Anyway both covers back so its all good.
      I hade "much more" oil in my big "air housing" i.postimg.cc/PfKwKZYX/IMG-0586.jpg . I will be replacing the oilseparators, but when inspecting the new ones they seem to be empty? Or how are the supposed to work?

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  5 років тому

      @@piratecustom6029 I'm not 100% sure how those things work to be honest, but I would recommend replacing them if you have that much oil in there.

    • @piratecustom6029
      @piratecustom6029 5 років тому

      @@E39Source Yes I will replace them since I bought the parts allready two years ago. Its not that much oil actually, it is more like "misted" so no "puddles" of oil. I will be replacing them (togethter with new hoses, expect for the ones coming from the crankcase tube, to replace them would have forced me to drain the coolant and remove plenty more parts, not in the mood for that...) this weekend, I hope. By the way the 34 or something bolts holding the plenum to the throttlebodies, did you use Locktite on the threads? I will do so, since if any of them vibrate loose they will be sucked in to the engine and that will totally scrap it... I actually noticed that the flap in one my throttlebodies had loose flap-screws (the ones that goes through the throttle flap axle), I did tighten it well, all other ones were luckily tight. Imagine one of those screws unwinding it self and ending up in the engine :(

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  5 років тому

      @@piratecustom6029 There was no sign of loctite on those bolts when we removed them, so we didn't apply any during reassembly. Torque them down wrist tight with a quarter drive and they should be solid. Definitely tighten anything that is loose though!

  • @KeineZeitX
    @KeineZeitX 3 роки тому

    Do you ever have change the Hoses from the Oil Separator? i mean that hoses on the bottom of the separator, that returns oil.

    Hi man, did the BREMI 11860T coils fit without modification to the S62? and do i need to use the permatex gasket maker to the valve gasket? will it leak without it? thanks for answer :)

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  3 роки тому +1

      The Bremi brand of E39 M5 coil fits absolutely fine, as they are what was used from the factory. I use a gasket maker only on the front timing cover seams and the 'half moons' in the rear of the cylinder head. Use the gasket maker where it goes from flat to curved and then curved back to the flat.

      @@E39Source Thanks for ur message!, i will change the valve cover but it should be fine without the gasket maker, i ordered BMW oem parts, i dont have problems with my coils they are from 99, maybe changing them later, the stock ones are made in germany and the replacement Bremi are made in china, but maybe the is no difference at all :D

    Ryan, I have seen most of your videos on your M5... You know those cars are pretty rare and its a shame the way you abuse yours.... You should consider fixing some of the issues and keep it in good working order.

      KLC LAWN & LANDSCAPING ? Abuse???? Excuse me? He takes the best care of any car I’ve ever seen! When he works in his car he replaces bolts that get marked up just because he wants to. I take care of my car but if it’s ain’t rounded off and broken that bolts going back in! Not many people replace good parts with new parts. He might enjoy his car but he damn well takes care of it. Abuse is neglect. Not doing maintenance, or beating on it. That’s abuse. This man has OCD to the max taking care of his car. Won’t even drive it in the winter unless it’s rained a couple times and the salt dust is gone... stuffing the exhaust with newspaper when in storage, parking in over plastic for moisture... the list goes on and on!
