Thanks for the ride Misha! Was great to meet you and have the old skool ring taxi experience. The cameras really don't do justice to how fast Misha's driving is.
@@Squril I'd say the oil nudging 125 Celsius a couple of times whilst going flat out, in traffic, up a hill, with three occupants is perfectly fine. The car has 2 oil temp sensors - one at the level sensor in the sump, the other on the filter housing - and uses these both as an approximation, the one at the filter housing gets a lot of second hand heat because of it's location, if either one of those two detected heat out of spec, the car would throw a code and go into limp home mode - all E39s after ~98 do this.
@@Squril I think he reached 130 a couple of times. Nothing too worrying since the temp backed down pretty quickly. This is wringing out the S62, especially uphill generates a lot of combustion heat.
I love the fact you brought up the Guy Ritchie films. When I was around 10 or 11 years old, those short films came out and it made the BMW fanboy in me come out even more. I saw the M5 at the Javitz Auto Show in NYC. My friend's dad had bought one brand new one around the same time when I got into high school. I told myself after seeing the film w/ Madonna, I would get one...and well I did about 5 years ago in my late twenties. It's my forever car, I don't plan on getting rid of it...ever. I'm so happy you enjoyed the car!
The best E39 M5 Nurburgring driving video! Been driving my stock M5 in the mountains, not the fastest but still tons of fun considering as a 1800 kg 4door sedan.
I can always tell when you're loving tracking a car, as you most of the time, push those silly noises and say 'Yeet' which i love by the way... as it definitely makes the vlog more fun, chilled and interesting to watch! More of these,if possible, please, thank you.
Had an awesome time there I was part of the BMW train in the F80 then my friend Matt in the blue e92 then Ashley Tyson with his e92 my 3 Rd time at the ring great cars great vid 👍
Too funny. Misha " what's the redline, 6?" as you make your way to 7,000. Let's hear it for Sabine. She was awesome. Equally funny as well. Nothing funnier and more entertaining then that timed lap against Jeremy C. in that van. Gosh E92's sound good. Props to this guy. This M5 looks SWEEEET!!! Great video Misha.
Nice video, im in love with the e39. I grew up with this car cause my dad had an e39 525i in oxford green with bright brown leather interior. The car ended up going to the graveyard, but the love for the car and the colour combination remains.
Fantastic video. I'm not lucky enough to own an M5 but do have a Japanese import E39 540i Sport and it's a fantastic car and engine (plus the sound) 👌🏼 I've mentioned this video on Pistonheads and the M5Board. Be good to see who the owner is as if they're from Merseyside then they're only down the road from me 👌🏼👍🏼
Still remember the first time they came out, with Sabine behind the wheel of the (then) E39 Ringtaxi, amazing laps we did in the streaming rain when it was barely 2 degrees outside. She was the greatest E39 pilot I ever know of... It was the time that Ringtaxi's still went flat-out everywhere.... Also remember Franz Fabian... awesome driver....awesome car....
My first drive in a BMW was an E39, but in a 530i. After finding out how fun even that was, I knew I needed a M5. Maybe one day, as prices are steadily rising for them.
The M5 is a fantastic car but I think a well sorted 530i is better car for fun / cost ratio, especially as a daily in my opinion. The running costs of the M5 can get pretty scary and in the UK at least, you can rarely use that extra performance.
AMAZING episode!!! Lap went like some bmw motorsport divison race! It's so much fun to see u driving a car that is hellish fast but still have a lot of fun and talk during the race, its literally like a party inside :D
This is my favorite BMW model of all times and one of my dream cars. I grew up with this and I had the pleasure to experience one when I was young and it stuck with me. The owner is a legend and I must thank Misha for this video!
I have a 00 and it has been a great car. Bought it about 5 years ago and it has never left me stranded. Gas costs more than maintenance, and when I bought mine it was $11,000 needing cosmetic work. I have put about 40,000 miles on it and have enjoyed every mile. I was dailying a 2016 550i w/ m-sport and it didn't compare to the e39. Loved the video.
E39 M5 🙌 forever ❤ forever 🤤 all the time. Thanks Misha. İt’s so funny how 7 mins go faster when you watch one of your all time top 10 car on the ring. End I have to say Misha was enjoying it a lot.

I feel lucky to have been daily driving an E39 M5 since April 2009 (on my 3rd one). I've watched Misha for a while and finally went and searched for his first near-stock E39 M5 drive. To tell you the truth, I was a bit shy because I also thought that maybe he wouldn't be impressed with a nearly stock one. I have DINAN suspension parts on mine and SuperSprint mufflers and tiny hi-flow cats, probably quite similar to this car. Glad that Misha has this as a hero car and was glad that he met it.

I miss mine! It was definitely one of the best cars I ever had, but running costs can be astronomical- mine was 2-3k per annum as there was always something to be done - the age and inevitable mileage they have means even when they were cheap (I paid 7k for a 2002 70k example) they weren’t to run. Mine had a supersprint exhaust and kwv3. Still the best manual I’ve had (once you’ve shortened the shifter). Lovey to see one being used properly!
Your story sounds very much like mine. Yeah, when I first drove an E39 M5, the long shift threw me... Z3 shifter later and it was much nicer and more precise. The oil consumption was a bit of an issue. Thankfully mine was a better example and more importantly, used the right oil. But I knew a couple of owners that needed a litre every 1k miles of driving and that was classed as "acceptable". Obviously, today you can easily make a sporty BMW as fast. But while I could make a 335d E91 fast and a total torque monster, it was never quite as fun as the old M5.
Misha, you should drive the W204 C63 with the 6.2 V8 (2012+ Facelift models with the 7 speed MCT transmission) on the track. Interested to know how it will do.
