this video looks pretty realistic, it shows also it took more than 3 minutes to open it up at home. On streets with more pressure, under different circumstances it may take much longer.

this is cool but to be honest it isnt lock picking. hmm i think im not saying it right. its more the tool than the person? that is a special made item and im guessing it either costs a decent amount or hard to come by? and was this your very first time trying or ? now if you could do that with normal/typical lock picks id be very very impressed. you cant call something easy to pick when its done like this compared to real life conditions but either way its a cool vid.

I was about to buy the abus extreme, but after watching this, I'll go for another. I think something cheaper, and maybe with alarm. As far as 've been watching If someone wants to steal your bike, it's just a matter of time...

Unfortunately my french is very limited. Anyway I put some passages of the text through google translate. I have to admit that i was wrong. The picking in public seems very unconspicuous. Much more than any other lock breaking method. If a thief REALLY wants a bike/bicycle nothing will stop him anyway. Where I live they come in a van and cut any lock with a hydraulic bolt cutter and just load it in and goodbye. Much more efficient and civil courage is = zero.

The question is --- how do you get a hold of a blank ABUS X-Plus key? The ABUS company will probably have alarms going off if someone requests a key coded X66666666

When a new lock technology is introduced thugs will immediately start and invent tools to pick it. Notice that he is doing this at home on his desk with good illumintation. Actually picking it in a public place with people going by and the lock laying in the ground is another story. The Lock is still very safe. It is pickable but it takes too long to do it so most thieves will consider it is not worth the risk.

you're probably a pro and it takes a long time until it has learned to crack this lock. Furthermore, this pick is very expensive key. and after all you needed 4 minutes. Do not get me wrong, this is very good (I already told you that you're a professional) but what do you do if your bike has a second lock? One with another closure which you do not know, maybe a disc lock or even a second Abus. Again four minutes to risk as I said, in a real theft it takes longer guaranteed

Interesting video, though it proves absolutely nothing. Very nice, so you picked your Abus X-Plus lock at home :-)
Try this out in the street if you want to steel a bike. The key-hole of my Abus Bordo 6500 X-Plus key-cylinder is always facing downwards to the ground, I´m pretty sure you will have a much harder time picking that in 3 minutes.
I called Abus last year, and they know of no case in which an Abus level 15 lock was picked/destroyed or something else in everyday´s life.

  • @ThomasArbs
    @ThomasArbs 11 років тому +3

I understand you _felt_ your way through the length of the lock. I understand this picking tool can open any lock of this type. BUT you saw the key beforehand. How much did it help having seen the key? Did it save you time?

For people that don't no the Abus Extreme 59 lock is MASSIVE, the link is 19mm thick "with coating" and no handheld bolt cutters are cutting this not even the 42inch Irwin cutters.
No doubt as shown above master lock pickers can pick the lock, but picking a lock at home under no pressure and doing it on a dark street under pressure are two different things, this would be a lot harder and take a whole lot more time to pick on a dark street under pressure.
The only thing getting past the Extreme 59 is a liquid gas cutter or an angle grinder which makes lots of noise.
I myself still think the Abus extreme 59 and the Kryptonite new York mini 18mm U-locks are the best and strongest locks on the market by far.
If people could see the size of say the Abus extreme or Abus power 58 U-locks in the flesh in there hands you would understand that these locks are serious Big/Thick locks and are nothing like your cheap £40 or $60 U-locks...These lock weigh a ton and unless your a wizard lock picker or walk around with liquid gas cutters no hand tools are getting through these.

    •  4 роки тому

And body ? Looks too plastic... Kryptonite looks more metal.

Though it is pickable.. It took awhile on a bench in Optimal Conditions..
I commend the UA-camr for his skill.
I do like this lock.. Id use it for when I go into a store or restaurant..
The thief would not only have to know how to pick the lock.. they would have to have the tools on them and risk the time in less than optimal conditions to get that lock open..

then you going to spend a week trying to figure out the configuration and then make a 3 minute video where you just repeat something that took a lot longer!
i admit, any lock can be picked but doing it outside with the risk of police or the owner coming outside in 3 minutes to bash your brains in is a totally different calculation for a thief so this
lock is safe and thats why i use it on my bike (in combination with another lock).

  • @RuffBuster

This video actually makes me feel more confident with my abus d lock. first he needed a key to start unpicking lock, which I'd only think high end thief's "might" carry, very specific attack. I personally then also put this thru my rear scooter wheel connected to a 13mm "near" uncroppable English super hardened chain, with the locking mechanism over the burning hot exhaust pipe. and I also attach a full shrouded padlock at the end of the chain links which are tight over the d lock key hole. 2 locks to cut/pick. only angle grinders or LARGE 40” + bolt croppers will damage this. And all this is kept around a foot off the ground requiring slightly more pressure or effort. This on a £1500 scooter makes thieves think twice about my bike. only hardened/more clever thieves have a chance. My only issue after is finding a solid anchor to attach it all to. Just need an alarm now to prolong the time it would take some nob head.

Always reminds me when me and my mate were going to pub heard some guy crying / whinging turned out he had been doing similar with a lock on some very big hairy arsed bikers padlocks. Unfortunately for him they didnt see the artistic side of things and had nailed him to a local utility shed door and left him after and bending the nails over at the end so he couldn't get off. The Ambulance crew and fire brigade made an interesting job of cutting him off the door. I will never forget the site of this bloke on tip toes pleading with us to help him.

The last three time one of my bikes and on of my girlfriend where stolen. One bike in the day on a public place locked on a sign, the second in the night locked on a balustrade at my home. In both cases in Berlin I used the "ABUS Faltschloss Bordo Granit X-Plus 6400/85". I don´t know if any lock is secure, but abus is definitly not.
