On the subject of maps, I think one of the worst things about the fantasy/sci Fi map phenomenon is that they are often presented objectively. When in the real world, maps are a fascinating view into who made them, and what information they have available to them while making. I would love to, instead of one big map, get multiple, incomplete maps, from the various different factions. After all, it's not like you can just shoot a satellite into orbit around the orion arm, and look down to get perfect data about the opposing factions. Gaining Intel would basically mean sending a probe to that system directly.
I think trying to avoid or gloss over the consequences of dictatorship is going to be something you really have to consistently remind yourself not to do.Democracy, multiculturalism and a strong rule of law often triumph because they work and they have a lot of dividends for the state and population. Autocracies suffer, don't fall into the trap, like you said, of taking fascists making the trains run on time at face value. Fascism is bad, shouldn't be controversial to say it
It shouldn't be controversial, but it should not be simplified to 'Democracy vs Autocracy.' The function of fascism is not related to forms of governance in that sense, and is more related to Capitalism and reactions to left-wing ideologies. Capitalism, that is, as an economic system.
@@idiotandco.1750 I know but it should be remembered that when you get right down to it dictatorship is bad for societies, especially long term. It's bad for governments and ESPECIALLY bad for citizens and those effects shouldn't be glossed over. The cavate I would like to add is that governments simply are not made with the same goals. A classic extraction based dictatorship is not designed to make the lives of its people better, but rather to make their goals and desires irrelevant while stealing as much moveable loot and selling it to the highest bidder. Any assessment of such a government's effectiveness must hold this goal in mind unless you only want pure moral indignation. Some governing models simply do not work, but others simply appear ineffective because the observer does not understand their purpose.
The strength of democracies is their empowered populations. This is why modern dictatorships target democracies through misinformation. Turn your enemy's strength into a weakness, in stead of trying to compete in terms of citizen output and education. They can compete in terms of citizen output and education, but the qualities of a productive population and an easily oppressed one don't always line up
I love this i am keen to see the progress of this remaster I feel that this will be better than the previous one with more lore and a detailed history of nations
For the interstaller maps, i always loved the star wars map. You can see in one look that star systems on hyperlane junctions would be more powerful, the "rims" denote measures of control and political power naturally and the dark unknown of the "unknown regions" give a sense of exploration and mystery.
I had a horrifying realisation in between Points 3 & 4. This Universe is one where nobody knows the Power Rangers, or modern Comic Book Heroes. The CBH´s can mostly be traced back to American Propaganda during WW2, and the PR came from Super Sentai, which came from Godzilla, who was originally an Embodiement of the fears created by the Nukes. Hey, I just want to say that when I saw the Dawn of Victory mod for Sins of a Solar Empire years ago I devoured that lore. There was an image of a tank parked along an earthen embankment with a sinister pillar of light off on the horizon, and either next to it or the flavor text for that image was a fake quote from, I think, General McArthur which said, paraphrasing, "The American armed forces will take this fight to the enemy in starships propelled by engines developed by Pratt & Whitney, armed with weapons developed by Northrop Grumman, and powered by reactors designed by General Electric." That quote was so damn cool to me when I read it. I loved the way it anchored the fantastic by name dropping defense contractors, and while it was just a tiny tiny part of a huge project, I still think of that line of writing a decade later and it's influenced how I write my own fiction to this day. I'm really excited for this project and I wish you and your team the best of luck! I hope it blows up beyond your wildest expectations and it spends a half century beloved, yet getting crudely handled and ultimately completely diluted by cynical corporate oversight.
Your comment about this being a world where if Cthulhu existed both axis and allies would try and use him makes me think of David Brin's brilliant short story "Thor Meets Captain America."
This has made me finally get off my ass and start writing up my own 'Writers Bible' for my Sci-Fi Sandbox. In the case of Halo 5's opening shot, that action is very much canon to what Spartan can do. But, we hardly ever see the perspective of normal everyday soldier, so these action scenes has to keep escalating. This is why ODST and Halo Wars are great, you get to see normal soldiers battling so when those little action moment happens, they are really fantastic. Spartan is a power fantasy, but there are no breathing room in the games. This is why I am all for spinoff games where you don't play as a Spartan, or at the very least, a Spartan allowed to perform at their peak.
Loved the Sins of a Solar Empire mod work. I even made a personal Stellaris mod set on the Dawn of Victory setting (invading Leningrad or Germania is always better than attacking Blob Prime). But I never quite got why the aliens were called Scinfaxi. Sounds like an alien name, but how would 1930's Earth know its name? Wouldnt they call the aliens different names in each of the countries' languages?
Here a few of my thoughts This idea of Alien Biohazard is pretty interesting. On another note, the fact that the "united front" had fallen apart and the return of division between states and factions, is very interesting. I hope that if you ever got to explore the details of such event, that you don't chalk up to simple greed or evil or shortsightness. All theses things are true, but is almost impossible for all involved party receive the same impact. As the most obvious difference would be countries that are close to the "frontline" or have bigger infestations, are very different than countries that are in the "backlines" and a serie of factors from culture, to geographic and current political and economical situation when the biohazard started would cause endless amout of big and small problems. Even if everyone is on the same mind that should be united against the alien and aren't acting in bad faith, just the nightmare of coordinate would be hell. - Maybe a country main trade supply route is cut by new growth spur - Maybe surronding weaker countries had fallen and now a previous stable country is struggling. - Maybe the plans of Aid the struggling country by gifting them industrial plant to make ammunition to the war effort, is now a big white elephant because they have lack of the technical skilled worker that are dime in a dozen in a more developed countries. - Maybe the forced economic sanctions to try to prop up the country lead to great resentment against the outside intervention that because their poor understanding of local economy try to apply generic "good pratices" that work on their well developed countries, but needed to be adapted to the new place. - Meanwhile other countries have forced increase in tax and work hours to try to keep up with the amout being spent on the war. However the global size of the front mean either pass dozen of each member state bureocracy or create a unified and often underfunded central to deal with some problems. - Hell even if economically, politically, logistically and even in moral, everything was fine, just the "How" each force should apply their forces and resourse against the enemy would be filled with hundreds of fierce defended strategy that can't be simultaneous followed. As such I think is that more than the alien biohazard overwhelm power that is the true reason why the world powers couldn't stop it. If the biohazard had at most the strenght of half the current militar might of the world at the time of the "united front". The simple fact that trying to move all this assets would make the militar display not even 1/3 of their projected might and as such burning and being forced into more drastic measures as nukes. Not because it couldn't be stopped without, but the way the world is structured and humans work, it would be almost impossible to make it work. This mean that is really difficult to make peoples agree in something, even inside own country militar you will have factions and division. As such maybe it was the desire for profit could have lead to people push a wanted development that is good only for their own money and not the overall situation, as well make reasons that are complete "reasonable", like the frontline countries are literally used as meatshield while the backlines country just send just enough to keep the threat away. This places own no oath to keep following detrimental orders by this group.
First, also FINALLY!! You guys do an awesome job on exploring other worlds so now exploring one you created is gonna be even better. Thanks for all the hard work you guys do. Storm
Addition: I frequent "Discord Roleplays" Text-Based roleplays set in AGOIAF and Star Wars Mostly. This feels like it'd be a great one to be involved in. (roleplay- as in players have a character who is in one of the factions, builds fleets and armies and well, fight eachother over long periods of time)
This kinda reminds me of Foundation by Isaac Asimov. (the book not the tv show) Mainly because how geopolitics are a central piece of the universe. Also u should make an in universe word for geopolitics like Astrapolitics or something like that.(I wrote this comment right before you said astro politics 😂)
You didn’t talk about it so I don’t know if it’s on your mind or not but I think logistics could be a very interesting way to make a map or geopolitics and so how leaders, travellers and military figures plan their next move. Also how frontiers shape themselves depending on how and how much an important resource can be acquired. This is just a very small and maybe dumb suggestion but I wanted to make it. Your videos and work are amazing, on UA-cam you are the best at this stuff, pls keep it going. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I will love following this as it develops, and so far it looks off to a good start. I do have a question regarding the Cold War element which might spur further world-building. Why fight over vast resources of space? In a world where travel / space flight between distant solar systems is viable, why is there a need for conflict between human cultures. You could travel somewhere else to find what you need. Or even terraform. Or go with domed/underground cities if climate is inhospitable. Asteroid bases, dyson spheres and space mining also options. Waging war is more expensive that building underground bases on i hospitable planets. Aside from historical attachment to a place humans fundamentally only fight over resources and 'lebensraum', and typically create culture and/or ideological conflicts fostered by the 'us or them' rhetoric to do so. So... what shortage or other reasons can be used in the world to create this faction vs faction tension?
I'm going to say this here, not sure if anyone will agree, but it needs to be said. This being such a huge idea and development, that will take so much time and that will in theory grow for a long time to come, and specially with so many factions and events, the best course of action is to do a circle of development, what does this mean? It means that every update or topic, should be done in an order by faction. Update 1, relates to faction A in conflict 1. Update 2, relates to faction B in conflict 2. Update 3, relates to faction C in conflict 3. And so on. This way each faction has a chance to slowly develop and to showcase some aspect of tis society, aesthetics, conflicts, ideologies, cultures and thinking. This method also negates the creation of a "hero" faction, as all are equally important and roughly equally powerful. This also organically allows us to see the ups and downs of each faction and it would be nice if we could see both victories and defeats from within the faction. During the Cold War, neither the Soviets or the Americans won all the time, each had their victories and defeats and each had ramifications that are felt today. Examples are Afghanistan for the Soviets and Vietnam for the Americans, each is an ideological defeat and t othis day referenced and talked about and it has shaped our story, just as much as victories have.
I find there's a tendency in worldbuilding for people to add stuff without thinking what you can subtract. E.g. with nations, it would also be interesting to see which nations disappear or don't make it in this version of history.
I’ve always wanted a Ace Combat tactical FPS spin off, think proper old school ghost recon or R6, where you play as a unit on he ground during the games. Specifically I’d love to see this concept for the story from 4 and 7
obviously there is a lot of substantive things to say, I did especially like your ideology sub talk, but I have 1 non substantive recommendation: thrust gravity, IE: no grav plating. I know you aren't focused on the tech, but grav plates have always taken me out of a world due to how much crazy tech they would unlock. Plus thrust gravity is cool asf, The Expanse and Battletech have some of the coolest spaceships imo.
Sounds amazing, scary in scope but if anyone can pull it off you guys and gals can. Will you be taking any inspiration from the Expanse? The realism and power politics it showed makes it , for me anyway, one of the best sci-fi shows in decades.
You take it really seriously I see, good thing, so I could overanalize this and properly theorize about possibilities without making assumptions and headcannons! Oh boy, you guys are putting more thought into it than creators of major franchises, it is quite the sign of how great potential it all have. You may not be Tolkien, but Tolkien was one man, this isn't a case for you, team, if coordinated, can reach even such incredible levels much faster than even most genious singular author could.
Very good looking so far. One thought, which I'm sure has already occurred to you - but considering the ideologies you're using why is the war "Cold?" In human history the Cold War occurred via fairly unique circumstances with MAD factors an enormous power differential. Particularly trying to make a five way cold war seem plausible, when almost universally in the history of human conflict things quickly reduce to binary.
Just my feedback, a name like the "Synfaxi"? sounds really weird. If humanity were invaded by an alien species, we wouldn't give them an exotic name. We'd give them an exonym that marks them as a threat. We'd call them aliens, predators, monsters, beasts ect. This is assuming no diplomacy was achieved. It could be really fun to pick the country that encounters the "synfaxi" first and theory craft how they'd react to their arrival, and what language theyd use to describe it.

They can compete in terms of citizen output and education, but the qualities of a productive population and an easily oppressed one don't always line up
Lmao
I love this i am keen to see the progress of this remaster I feel that this will be better than the previous one with more lore and a detailed history of nations
This is awesome. I think the algorithm had recommended it to me before, I wish I had listened . But at least now I get to binge it.
With Hiroshima and Nagasaki not occuring in the same Way, that erases so much we would be Familiar with
Yes but new series and media franchises would exist
"horrifying" lol
@@shift7200 I mean I'd be horrified if PR and associated franchises didn't exist. Come on man, everyone enjoys something don't try to act like you're somehow aloof.
@@samwill7259 if ur biggest problem in life is kids franchises thats a problem
Hey, I just want to say that when I saw the Dawn of Victory mod for Sins of a Solar Empire years ago I devoured that lore. There was an image of a tank parked along an earthen embankment with a sinister pillar of light off on the horizon, and either next to it or the flavor text for that image was a fake quote from, I think, General McArthur which said, paraphrasing, "The American armed forces will take this fight to the enemy in starships propelled by engines developed by Pratt & Whitney, armed with weapons developed by Northrop Grumman, and powered by reactors designed by General Electric."
That quote was so damn cool to me when I read it.
This looks amazing! I look forward to more information on the superpowers mostly Japan and the Soviet Union.
Same dude
Lets go! Stoked to see how you develop and manage your own universe.
I've used it for tabletop RP, but as myself and my friends have finally bid it adieu with our most recent campaign...I kinda feel like I want to write in it. Only have three years of notes/overviews/drunken ramblings to collate into something that makes sense!
I’m so excited!
Oh, I am WAITING for this map!
Did anyone else catch the subtlest Templin Institute Lore drop of “67 years later” at 48:34 or am I going crazy?
A detailed star map sounds so cool!
A custom glossary of terms to understand Geo-politics and when every there are people involved there are going to be shades of gray to guide the viewer/reader of Dawn of victory
YES YES YES IT'S BACK WE'RE SO FUCKING BACK
Love this alternate universe
In the case of Halo 5's opening shot, that action is very much canon to what Spartan can do. But, we hardly ever see the perspective of normal everyday soldier, so these action scenes has to keep escalating. This is why ODST and Halo Wars are great, you get to see normal soldiers battling so when those little action moment happens, they are really fantastic. Spartan is a power fantasy, but there are no breathing room in the games. This is why I am all for spinoff games where you don't play as a Spartan, or at the very least, a Spartan allowed to perform at their peak.
I’m actually excited for this.
As an avud supporter of this channel and its mother channel.
Finally! This is amazing👍
I really like how 'original project' means just bringing back a 12 year old mod for Sins of a Solar empire.
So excited for this!
Better story writing then Disney Star Wars I love the setting and I waited for this and now ist finally here
Here a few of my thoughts
This idea of Alien Biohazard is pretty interesting.
- Maybe a country main trade supply route is cut by new growth spur
- Maybe surronding weaker countries had fallen and now a previous stable country is struggling.
Storm
Oh shit! It's back!
God I wish there was a book to read on Dawn of Victory. This sounds fucking amazing and I want more, please.
Addition: I frequent "Discord Roleplays" Text-Based roleplays set in AGOIAF and Star Wars Mostly. This feels like it'd be a great one to be involved in. (roleplay- as in players have a character who is in one of the factions, builds fleets and armies and well, fight eachother over long periods of time)
18:05 sounds like a lot of battletech influence and thats a good thing
The great start of a great world
This kinda reminds me of Foundation by Isaac Asimov. (the book not the tv show) Mainly because how geopolitics are a central piece of the universe. Also u should make an in universe word for geopolitics like Astrapolitics or something like that.(I wrote this comment right before you said astro politics 😂)
Ahhh yes, here we go ❤️🔥
You didn’t talk about it so I don’t know if it’s on your mind or not but I think logistics could be a very interesting way to make a map or geopolitics and so how leaders, travellers and military figures plan their next move. Also how frontiers shape themselves depending on how and how much an important resource can be acquired. This is just a very small and maybe dumb suggestion but I wanted to make it.
Your videos and work are amazing, on UA-cam you are the best at this stuff, pls keep it going.
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Ideology, starship troopers? Thanks for the wonderful memory...war bears.
I will delete this after rewarching if you already addressed it.
E.g. with nations, it would also be interesting to see which nations disappear or don't make it in this version of history.
know friends that we have been here since the beginning!
A star map poster could be really pretty! Are you thinking of making one?
I’ve always wanted a Ace Combat tactical FPS spin off, think proper old school ghost recon or R6, where you play as a unit on he ground during the games. Specifically I’d love to see this concept for the story from 4 and 7
The Baldur’s Gate shade is hilarious 😂
*I am 100% invested.*
Were in for a ride boys
Very nice
LET IT BEGIN LET IT BEGIN
Please explore what happened with Poland in this setting. My homeland is very rarely shown in sci-fi
Kinda like the expanse book series and I love it
Whoop whoop!!
I love that aliens are kinda Others but in space. All the politics is going on but the real threat is out there
AWOOGA!! Here we go boys, time tob buy the stock before it rises into absurdity!
obviously there is a lot of substantive things to say, I did especially like your ideology sub talk, but I have 1 non substantive recommendation: thrust gravity, IE: no grav plating. I know you aren't focused on the tech, but grav plates have always taken me out of a world due to how much crazy tech they would unlock. Plus thrust gravity is cool asf, The Expanse and Battletech have some of the coolest spaceships imo.
Good Job!
49:45 monstergarden menctioned! Pog :D
It’s finally here
Sounds amazing, scary in scope but if anyone can pull it off you guys and gals can. Will you be taking any inspiration from the Expanse? The realism and power politics it showed makes it , for me anyway, one of the best sci-fi shows in decades.
So... The universe of DoW 2286 is coming back from dead.
Great. Even Awesome. 😄
WOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!
ITS BACK!!
Interesting concept
I'm gonna have to buy this map
keep an eye out!
After 10 years!
Are you planning on up loading the livestream? I saw it as I was going to bed 😞😴
I WAS HERE. LET'S GOOOOO
very cool
The hype train is leaving the station, everyone aboard!
I can't wait to headcanon myself into the aut-ism faction
Very good looking so far. One thought, which I'm sure has already occurred to you - but considering the ideologies you're using why is the war "Cold?" In human history the Cold War occurred via fairly unique circumstances with MAD factors an enormous power differential. Particularly trying to make a five way cold war seem plausible, when almost universally in the history of human conflict things quickly reduce to binary.
My big question is "what is keeping humanity confined to the Orion Arm?"
What is stopping an explosion of people across the whole galaxy?
Just my feedback, a name like the "Synfaxi"? sounds really weird. If humanity were invaded by an alien species, we wouldn't give them an exotic name. We'd give them an exonym that marks them as a threat. We'd call them aliens, predators, monsters, beasts ect. This is assuming no diplomacy was achieved.
It could be really fun to pick the country that encounters the "synfaxi" first and theory craft how they'd react to their arrival, and what language theyd use to describe it.
Makes me think of a game of Twilight Imperium with five players.
