Conditioning was the difference - I could tell during the timeouts, especially at the end. That was a war - great job by the cameraman. Thanks for saving this and posting it!
We played you the following week. Came out of Ratliffe with a win but that was the toughest of the season except maybe for Plano East. You guys played 4 quarters that’s for sure. We always had a lot of respect for Permian we always knew you would play hard and be well coached.
Those were crazy times. Seasons decided by first downs or penetrations. Or a flip of the coin as in 1988. Great football back in the day before the Allens and Aledos started paying families of top players to relocate to their towns. Allen just had a gang shootout between some of their California relos. Such a shame.
From my perspective, this game is when it was all about growing up in a system. Players spent time in the weight room and workouts with dreams of making the team. No transfers in or relocations (with perks for parents that were never mentioned, and still aren't) just because of a players talent / ability.
I’m from New Mexico near the ‘four corners area’ and loved football. My dad would watch Texas HS playoffs and knew about Odessa and we watched. I was watching because we got Dish cable. I was watching Odessa and Texas games with my dad. I was in middle school to HS watching…
@@jonhenson5450 we were actually Lima 3/1, 1st platoon. I got there from another unit spring 92. He came around that time as well. He was injured/non-deployable when he came and didn’t train or deploy with us. He was a solid guy. Lost contact with him when we went overseas.
One of the most inspiring efforts I have ever seen from a RB here. Crow must have found a incredible motivation because he flat out willed his way to win. Having said that the OL was beating Arlington in the second half. Plus other than a big play the MOJO defense played very well the second half. But the game ball had to go to Crow. I never get tired of watching this game.
@@jonhenson5450 I think a lot of things lead to the downfall of the MOJO dynasty. But perhaps most importantly is DFW schools developed a great football tradition and some of these schools had/have a lot more natural talent than OP. I think Abilene was the last West Texas school to win it all. They actually came close again in 2016. If they had beat DeSoto they likely would have. And that Desoto game was one they let slip away in the end. I swear the football gods were watching over Desoto in that playoff run. But back to OP and really all of the West Texas schools, it is hard to compete with great programs from the large metros today. WL has had the best coaches but they have also been blessed with some great skill players. They are not quite as large on the LOS as teams like NS or Duncanville but they are big enough. Could a really great coach revive OP? The thing about that area is the economy goes boom and bust often. Just a few years ago it was really booming but I bet it is in a bust now. It is totally dependent on oil and the price of oil. Getting quality players depends on families moving there and that depends on high paying jobs. In decades past OP would beat larger teams by being better conditioned and tougher. Plus back then the game was different. We didn't see spread offenses in those days. Today SLC/ Allen and Duncanville are able to overpower and in many cases out coach OP. The same can be said for SAC and Midland Lee. I agree with the defense being a trademark of the great MOJO teams. I pull for MOJO and SAC every year even though I am a native of Fort Worth and currently live just North East of San Antonio. I enjoy West Texas football and even follow small schools like Irran and Fort Hancock. There are some great traditions out there.
Your right on all the way around. Plus the focus and effort needed to build tough teams can't be asked of modern people. SAD. I would drive anywhere to watch a game. Now I can't finish one. Really miss good sharp power football. FUNNY. I have often thought S.Crows effort was the best I've ever seen. EVERYTHING asked of a true player. Thanks for chat.
@@jonhenson5450 That and the self discipline needed to not have Personal Foul flags thrown on every big play you make through an entire season, offense and defense. That is poor coaching, in my opinion as one who has watched MOJO be built from 1973 on. If they can't control themselves, get 'em off the field. I'd rather lose than be known as THAT team!
As players (Just for the record...No, I didn't play for Permian.) we battled each other every down. All Out!!! But when the whistle blew? It has always been about sportsmanship.
Hey! He did play college ball briefly but was injured. I think he was at TCU for a bit. Possibly another JC before and then again after the Marines. He was in my platoon for a time.
That's what the rules were then. Tie games were decided on Penetrations first, and if Penetrations were tied, it when to First Downs, and if memory serves me correctly (I played then but I'm "OLD" now so I might be wrong) the next tie breaker was total yardage. They had a whole list they went down. I know because I played in a Championship Game in 1968 where those rules came into play. I'm just sayin'... Having said all that? That was 'then.' "This" is now. Anyone that didn't play back when those rules were applicable, doesn't 'get it' the way those that played then do. It's really easy for those that didn't play then to make judgements 'now' that rules have been adjusted.

Arlington got a lesson in 18 toss sweep that day.
I was in the Marines with Shawn Crow. He was such a great person.

Booby Miles should have been in the NFL but he blew his knee in his SR yr ,and it was so sad to watch his life change and his dream was over.
