Eminem is one of the truly legendary figures in hip-hop, and modern American music as a whole. With that being said, his reputation has suffered as the years have gone on. Where he was once at the top of the game, commercially and critically, now-a-days...it's just him and his core fanbase. Today's video is looking at a massive point in his career: Relapse. This 2009 album is arguably his darkest, most theatrical piece of work to date, but people don't see it for the masterpiece that I think it is. This is my time to try and show the world what I see in this project.

It’s bad because it was a caricature of himself. He was trying to be something he was only a taste of when he came out. It was clear. It wasn’t genuine.

Kind of agree with the conclusion that the response to albums like relapse and revival made Eminem shell up in terms of expressing his vulnerability with music. However, I think it's always sad when critics/people throw MMLP2 under the bus as if it wasn't one of the biggest albums of 2010s, and quite a complete project that looked back on certain themes & messages from MMLP in a more mature way. Also, I believe more people listen to Eminem than just his core fanbase, considering how many hits he has.

“The critics gave it a 3, and then 3 years later they go back rerate it, and call the Slim Shady LP the greatest
The Marshall Mathers was a classic
The Eminem Show was fantastic but Encore just didn’t have the calibre to match it, I guess enough just ain’t passed yet.”

Man I’ll never forget going into relapse thinking “damn this is gonna suck” but by the end was blown away by how good it was. For a while I was just convinced that when you have low expectations, you can be pleasantly surprised. But I now know that in this specific case, that was bullshit. Cuz the reality is, this is an incredible album, and people just weren’t ready for it yet. Hip hop was at a weird point in 2009. Artists like T-Pain and Black Eyed Peas had a chokehold on the overall sound of this era. But people just wanted to dance. They weren’t ready for vulnerability like we are today. Don’t forget that just a year prior to this, Kanye dropped 808s & Heartbreaks and people HATED that album. But now today? It’s considered by many to be one of his best projects, and the album that birthed the sound of modern hip hop today. I think both 808s and Relapse are albums that had to come out when they did, despite people not being ready for them. Otherwise music would have never evolved to where it is today for better or worse. Those albums may not have been appreciated then but in the grand scheme of things, those albums will be greatly remembered as classics. Even artists like Picasso, Beethoven, Shakespeare and many others were seen as mediocre artists during their times.

Relapse has the best production out of any Eminem album.
It's the first and probably last album of his we'll get where its 95% Dre beats. This was Eminem not trying to chase a hit song or trying to appeal to anyone but himself. It's a concept album which he never did before or after this one. Not to mention, the final track Underground is in a 5/4 time signature which is super rare in rap music. While the subject matter can turn away certain people, that was the point. His technical ability is also next-level. The flows he does on this are more creative than the super fast stuff he does now. His use of multi-syllabic rhyming is also perfectly balanced out with the substance in his lyrics. The only real issue is that the accents that take up most of the album can be jarring. I know Em has stated he used the accents to make the words rhyme better but I would argue that most of the rhymes wouldve worked without the accents. But also, if you need to bend a word to the point you switch nationalities, the rhyme wasn't meant to be. I mean, dude was able to rhyme 'toolboxes' with 'screwdrivers' flawlessly on Survival. The track Framed from the Revival album gives us a glimpse into what Relapse song couldve sounded like without the accents.
The fact that this was his first solo project in 5 years and getting completely sober and the whole concept is him being back on drugs and committing heinous acts on people is wild.

    • @bsteggy
      @bsteggy 8 місяців тому +6

Agree sooo hard with everything you just said, except the take on the accents. They are an integral part of his creativity in this album.. of his choice to let go here. Without the accents, the storylines wouldn’t have hit as hard either. Also, it’s quite an ability. Who else can do that so naturally? I admire it in a way 😂
I would miss the characters he created in these songs though his accents deeply if they were to suddenly disappear. Relapse wouldn’t be relapse!

Relapse is unique in that it's Eminem's one and maybe ONLY "concept album" that's ever been made by him, and that alone is what gives Relapse such a unique edge among his discography.
Though one thing I would like to see is how Relapse (2009) could potentially tie in with King Mathers (2007), his unreleased album and whatever tracks we know were made during his time away from the spotlight. Fun fact, "Careful What You Wish For", and "Beautiful" were originally made for King Mathers, his retirement album made between Late 2006, and very early 2008, and "My Darling" was made at the tail end transitioning into when he finally moved towards the Relapse concept in 2008. So... tracks carried over.

I think people were kinda soured on Eminem after the silly tracks from his previous LP Encore that ended up as singles, like "Just Lose It" and "Ass Like That", which made it hard to take Em seriously. He said a lot of that LP was rushed out to fill gaps caused by leaks, but most people (myself included) didn't know about that. So for us, the album was overshadowed or even defined by those few bad tracks.
It wasn't helped by Curtain Call, a collection of Eminem finest accomplishments, coming out with "FACK" as the first track. Personally I like FACK, it's pretty funny and the beat is good... but it felt like such a stark contrast to the tracks that follow it, especially with FACK being right before The Way I Am. Gone are the tracks that you grew up with, the stuff that got you to fall in love with Eminem. The Way I Am told us who he was *then*, FACK told us who he was *now*.
Then Relapse drops... and it's still full of Em putting on accents. And 3AM as a single was OK if you like horrorcore, but going so hard in that direction was kinda new and too out there for a lot of fans. He'd talked about dark and personal stuff before, but now he's rapping about drinking someone's bath water. Plus all the stuff referencing grape (with no G), and bars about sexualising child/teen stars, it was getting kinda stale for an audience that might have started to wonder if they ever really liked that, or just put up with it because the rest of Em's stuff was dope.
Relapse certainly has merits, but it's easy to see why it wasn't well received. If there really is an alternate history where we got a better Eminem discography (11:28), I'd say that's it's a timeline where the Encore leaks never happened, or Em and Dre decided to just ignore them, so it didn't get filled with stuff like "Big Weenie". But ultimately, it wasn't the public that decided Eminem's future, it was his own choices. Critical reception can make you better, but when you're on Eminem's level, only he could make himself fail.

I heavily agree, Relapse is disturbing and ridiculous to say the least, but Eminem's creativity and ability to take risks, really pays a lot, specially when you look at how amazingly written some of the songs are. Because you have incredibly vulnerable songs like "Deja Vu" and "Beautiful", tracks like "Crack a Bottle" and "We Made You" that are more easier to listen to, and insanely written tracks like the rhyme scheme in "Stay Wide Awake" or his flow in "Underground".
And if that wasn't enough, he even dropped Relapse: Refil (Deluxe) which contains amazing songs like "Buffalo Bill", "Drop the Bomb on 'Em" or even one of the best concept songs I've heard from Em called "My Darling".

For me, this album is similar to The Shinning. The Shinning was panned when it first came out, and now it's regarded as one of the greatest horror movies ever made. I remember when this album first dropped, I didn't think much of it. I rarely listen to Eminem anymore, but for some reason this last year I went back and put it on. By the time I got to "Insane" I remember thinking "is this his most creative album that I somehow slept on?" I think the extra songs on Refill are just as brilliant. Now I'm obsessed and can't stop listening to it. His macabre story telling, flow and rhyming is impeccable. Pure creativity. What I think is most interesting is Eminem doesn't like this album and has said in an interview that he puts Encore and Relapse as his least favorite albums, with Relapse probably being below Encore. But he did say that this album was the first time he had fun rapping in a long time, and I think it shows. I hope it gets a cult resurgence, because it certainly deserves it.

"Relapse" is one of the best albums I've ever heard. It's so damn playful with the sounds, yet so dark. It plays with the proposition of a better world, a better outcome to be had - while unfulfilled. "Deja Vu" is the greatest track on there. The level of insight Em shows there is beyond.
To even think that this album is not even mentioned among his all time best records is just simply baffling.

I'll be honest, I think Em is leagues better than he was, but the general sound he still uses is so comparatively stale around him(also the albums are way too long goddamn). I had no idea what to feel on first listen of Relapse, but man I am so glad so see where it's brought him. Hope he's eventually inspired to tap into some of the richer roots of hip-hop in the near future

I'm gonna stop you right there at 10:00, MMLP2 and Recovery were both fantastic albums that should not be mentioned in the same sentence as Revival or MTBMB. Recovery is almost all bangers from front to back. Almost Famous, 25 To Life, Cold Wind Blows, Space Bound, Not Afraid, LTWYL, Recovery is low key his most slept on album. Relapse has a cult following. And MMLP2 has great tracks as well. Bad Guy is lyrically one of the greatest Eminem tracks ever made, followed by the parking lot skit that's a sequel to the skit in Criminal. So Much Better, Survival, Legacy, Rap God, Head Lights, sure this was the album where you could see the decline start to happen, but it was still an extremely solid album. When Em dies guarantee people will look at MMLP2 as a masterpiece.

Too bad we’ll never get a sequel to Relapse. “Framed” and “Discombobulated” gave me Relapse era Eminem vibes.
I love Metro Boomin’s production because he makes nice dark melodies, perfect for a shady type single and they ain’t too complex which would leave a lot of room for Eminem to rap on. Personally I like Eminem on simple beats more than complex ones that’s just my take though. The recent Eminem we have been getting with the more calmer flows would fit very good on a Metro Boomin beat. Really been liking that. Would love it but I doubt it will happen. At this point I can say Eminem would literally fit into any style, he can rap on g-funk on progressive style, on drill style on whatever, so I don’t see why not especially since Metro Boomin is really talented maybe a track with Metro Boomin, Eminem and 21 Savage would be a fucking banger. Modern day Eminem rapping on Savage Mode II beats. Not gonna lie a Eminem album produced by Metro Boomin would be dope as fuck. Obviously, I’d love Dr. Dre to produce the entire thing, but think about it. All the entries in the Re- series have mostly one producer you think about when they come to mind (Relapse had Dr. Dre, Recovery had Just Blaze, & Revival had Rick Rubin) So, it would be cool if Eminem stuck with this. Metro’s dark production would fit with the darker themes of Relapse, if it ever gets a sequel in the first place…

I think if King Mathers would have been released in 2007 which was recorded during his drugged up and dark period, it would have been better off than Relapse because of the fact that you could still recognize the old Eminem that we all love there in that record. And his voice was powerful there too! I think it's strange that Em himself didn't like the songs on that album and thought Relapse would do better. Maybe he was in too much pain cause of Proof and everything and didn't wanna finish it cause of it...

listned to all of his discography for the first time last year (no bias) and relapse is by far the album I most frequent and relisten. Its so fun. And I prefer albums with a story and focused on the artists psyche. That's also why Mr Morale and the Big Steppers is my fav Kendrick album. I've noticed that typically the albums people dont like as much are the ones I love or are my favorite from said artist. And i dont think its a coincidence that those albums are usually the most experimental the artist has ever been up to that point. That being said Lil Wayne's Rebirth is terrible lol Cant win them all. But Im VERY much looking forward to Dojas new album.

Never gotten that much into this album, always prefered recovery and mmlp2 over it and i still do. Some might think that i dislike horrocore or something, no, i love horrorcore and i love watching horror movies and serial killer documentaries and stuff, and i can understand the "life of a serial killer" concept or whatever that the album has, i just think it was poorly executed.
My major problem like for everyone are the accents. It wouldve been cool if he kept then for shock value on a few songs like it would've worked just for 3am for example, but listening to them for the whole album except for a few king mathers throwaway songs is very painful to my ears. Accents also ruin the lyrical aspect of the album for me, since he uses them to bend certain words, some might say that's genius or creative, but nah that's just like cheating to me.
Second major thing i don't like about this album are the lyrics. People will say that this album has the best storytelling or the best lyricism or something like that, but lyrics always start getting all over the place and the concept of the song gets lost somewhere midway in the song and blends with the concept of relapse as a whole in a way, or just goes completely out of context. Like for example 3am he starts painting a perfect picture, then at the end of 1st verse he says "wake up naked at McDonald's" and then his whole next verse is about masturbating and busting all over the walls and doing stuff you would be hearing him do while listening to fack. Why can't he focuse on horrorcore aspects and not on complete randomness? Some will say "well slim shady is all about randomness", well then go listen to slim shady lp, when i listen to it, i hear cohesive and consistent funny and weird stories about slim shady, but as much as they seem random, they are always perfectly in context, relapse just always either goes out of context, or lyrics just become so dumbed down and sometimes even on the same level of dumb as the songs on encore that replaced the leaked ones.
Also Eminem himself said that on the album he was saying stuff that might be like ha ha that's funny, but the jokes get you bored and annoyed really quickly, and he also said that he was getting out of writer's block so he was sometimes rhyming random shit that comes to his mind and has no correlation whatsoever, that's exactly how i feel about it too.
Third major thing i don't like about it is the inconsistency in the tracklist. You got some dope songs that tell the stories well like same song and dance, stay wide awake, deja vu, beautiful, etc. But then you got some songs that either don't speak about anything in particular, just shady being shady, like bagpipes from Baghdad (seriously, whenever i try to focuse on the lyrics of this song i just get carried away into randomness, it ain't even good at dissing Mariah if that was the main point of the song), or hello and we made you (reintroduction of shady and ig both were like party themed and joking around with women, but they both either just start getting random asf or cringe asf, no in between) or old time's sake (seriously, wtf is Eminem even talking about on the song) or songs that were supposed to have a concept but failed like must be the ganja (the whole concept revolving around drugs and then he starts spitting random serial killer bars which fade into the concept of relapse as a whole, not of this individual song, or it just has the random ass lyrics like i'm so la di da so like wtf), or medicine ball (which is like him being offensive but then again it either just has some random ass shit with gross imaginery which brings back the fack vibes for me, or it just goes really too far like with Chris Reeves, i mean ik it was supposed to be offensive but damn) or insane and my mom which were supposed to represent a serial killer's childhood, but both fail in a way like my mom is just terribly annoying and becomes less funny whenever i hear it, and insane also starts going into randomness a bit, like i mean it follows the "child molestation" theme, but i wished it just focused on that one child from the first verse the whole time)
Overall i just wish relapse had more songs with a concept like stay wide awake, same song and dance and music box, and delivery more like underground or the king mathers leftover tracks.
