What I loved most about that scene in the Nazi documentary is that he never answers whether he's Jewish or not. He neither confirms or denies because he, as he tells them, firmly believes that it shouldn't matter whether he is or isn't.
After watching the first time i really was connfused and thought that louis may have been jewish, why else would he risk the danger of the nazis just burying him in the garden. 20 mins of googling later i found that he isnt and i'm glad that he stood his ground, it certainy made their racism seem more racist.
Funny you say emotionless, he is generally, but whenever I see him I always immediately think of that episode of Peep Show (which will be meaningless if you've never seen it) but where Marks gets roped into playing spin the bottle and it lands on his mate Jeremy and they get peer pressured into kissing each other and Mark while completely freaked out in his internal monologue is like "Oh jesus what am I doing, no no this is fine, it means nothing, I'm not gay, I'm just a sexual scientist, I'm Louis Theroux with his wry smile at the orgy."
He's pretty brave when you think about it, though he certain doesn't seem it on first sight :D One of the reasons he wouldn't answer he said was to make good tv even though he thought they were going to kick his head it any moment :D
He is the best documentary maker of this generation. I like the way that he does his work. It is very subtle how he does it. He does it by acting like he is naive about what the subject is about and is much more clever than he makes out. He asks exactly the right questions without the subject knowing that he is doing it.
NickYDGn from his documentaries I expected him to be awkward and thought he was only unintentionally funny. But watch him on the Joe Rogan experience he’s very funny and comfortable
I believe that's why he's allowed in to so many subcultures who are normally not big on filming outsiders asking questions. He's not looking for sensation, just looking to have insight in what motivates these groups. I've never seen him act disrespectfull, although some interviews must have make him want to take some really long showers or hire personal bodyguards..
That is absolute nonsense, he makes chewing gum tv for chewing gum viewers. He copies Nick Broomfields subject matter but is nowhere near as sincere an interviewer or a person, and when he finally got a chance to put his sneaky style to use against Jimmy Savile, he BLEW IT!
jonnnnniej Louis never attacks his subjects no matter how reprehensible. He just asks leading questions and his interviewees expose themselves. He doesn’t even give them the rope, he leaves a rope around and his guests hang themselves. The closest I have seen him angry or berate a subject when he was covering those White Supremacist parents with the little twin girls they were were trying to turn into the Nazi version of the Olsen Twins. When the innocent little girls who didn’t know right from wrong and what is appropriate or inappropriate made a Swastika on the floor, the mom acted proud like they did something really sweet and cute like draw a heart or write “I love you Mom” and seeing Theroux’s reaction was like seeing a Vulcan have an emotional moment.
@@thekeythesecret66 It's easy to say that in hindsight, but a rather brilliant biography on Jimmy Saville called 'In Plain Sight: The Life and Lies of Jimmy Saville', by Dan Davies, whom spent several years interviewing Saville, in far more depth than anyone else, reveals that Saville was a total chameleon, in that he knew how to read people to the point of him being utterly convincing. In that book, Mr. Davies reveals that Saville was a very slippery person to interview, as he had a way in which, once you got charmed in by his personality, it's near impossible to know the truth; what is true, but bent in manners that served the narrative Saville was presenting, and what was outright lies. Which is how he got past the normally very aware Louis Theroux, because --- at least the impressions I got --- trying to interview Saville was like entering a labyrinth of mirrors ... or, to paraphrase an old American saying, "like nailing jelly to a wall ..." He was once interviewed by the then well known Irish Psychiatrist, Dr. Anthony Clare. He, in his British radio series, would interview famous people, in the manner of a psychiatrist talking to a patient. In the book, which he writes about the celebrities he had 'sessions' with, Dr. Clare describes that, in all of his years of being a Clinical Psychiatrist, his interview with Saville was one of the hardest, if not _the_ hardest. The reason being partly because Saville was so damn defensive, whom built walls behind walls. He would only open up about what only he chose to say, and, even then, if you take, as Dr. Clare, the route of taking that answer further, when he asked questions that, in previous 'sessions', are thought provoking, and leads to further opening up further, when the same tack was taken, if he didn't like that it got even close to who he really was as a person, not only a mental door would be slammed shut, but then 'bricked up', thus making it impossible to have any really, in depth, conversations. As a foot note to that 'sessions', Dr. Clare pondered that there was something so very dark about Saville, that required him (Saville) to build a ring of fortresses around it, and thus impenetrable. As Dr. Clare notes, few people are utterly combative when they are given the opportunity to an actually Licensed, and Certified, Clinical Psychiatrist. I need to find that book again, but, as I said, from what I remember of Dr. Clare's observation, that Saville built so many mental fortifications, the way he would reply is firstly by not only provide a 'none' answer by use of talking alot, but saying little, he would, concurrently, also add in subtle, and often not so subtle, ways of deviating from the question, which will finally be a combination of giving awau only as much as he wanted to, but, equally, packaged that reply in a way that required a significant amount of research to get closer to the truth that he makes you believe it is true, due to his extrovert, avuncular, personality. That, plus his many other issues, mentally health wise, resulted in a 'exterior' personality, that, in centuries before, would mark him out as being suited for being the 'Court Jester', abet using all of his personal behaviours as a façade, in much the same way John Wayne Gacy did, to hide not only his true self, but also the crimes that he committed. Saville was even made a honorary Royal Marine Commando, having actually passed both Phase I, and II of Selection, but I think his age prevented him from being actually enlisted. So, not only did Saville hoodwinked the Royal Marine, but trying to interview him was often an exhausting experience, because of his convoluted way of replying. Hence if he was able to miss-lead a well regarded Psychiatrist, before his untimely death, he could easily do the same with a well-regarded investigative reporter. Something else I noted, was Dr. Clare's suspicion that Saville was overly- compensating for a truly dark side of the personality, that no one was even close to getting to. Just how big, and/or how bad that dark side was, really troubled him, especially in what exactly that dark side consisted of, especially in terms of what behaviours that was held well within that dark side. I would imagine that, if Dr. Clare was still alive, although he definitely would be utterly horrified of what Saville did, a part of him wouldn't be at all surprised, given Saville's overly defensive nature he (Saville) presented in that particular interview, alongside other ones he have had well before the one with Dr. Clare, and all the ones subsequently after, more than likely with the kinds of reporter that Louis Theroux is: that is serious about journalism, behind that façade of a naïve personality, and thus knows how to steer questioning, so had to think of an opposing method, that of being rather combative, especially towards questions about his personal, inner, life ... I remember Louise been interviewed, not long after Saville's death, and him (Louis) being utterly gobsmacked at all of the resulting allegations, many of which may very well result in Saville, not only being convicted, but also sentenced (consecutively, and not concurrently) for many a decade in prison. If you can find videos with Louis taking about Saville, you can almost almost see grief across his face, and the way he expresses of how utterly ashamed of himself he was/is, due to the fact that Saville was a monster in plain site, but, rather like how a cuttlefish can quickly blend into the environment they're in, so was he, which made him so dangerous, as, not very unlike Ted Bundy, he used his outgoing personality, and 'quirky' charm as one of many means he used to utterly baffle not just Mr. Theroux, but most of all, a well regarded psychiatrist. And that's just scratching the surface ... So, don't be _that_ hard on Louis, because, like so many people before him, he got trapped into that well constructed web of lies, and deceite, as well as possibly bribery, and subversion, which makes it almost impossible to ever know whom he really was, whilst he was still alive. At a subconscious level, you can find yourself with Dr. Clare, in thinking there is something about him that is really _off_ in some ways, but it was nigh on impossible to pin that feeling to something concrete, because of his amorphous personality, and his well-crafted eccentricity, & enthusiasm. And, if that wasn't enough, there was all his efforts to raise money for charities, notably children's hospitals (the irony ...), often in the form of running marathons, and much else besides, which did indeed resulted in millions being raised for all manner of hospitals. In what I remember of Louis, not much after Saville's burial, and when the allegations where becoming so concrete, Louis berates himself that, like Dr. Clare, he, too, was deeply concerned about Saville's behaviours, but, much like Dr. Clare, was wholly unable to point to exactly what those specific behaviours were leading to, which was so deeply disturbing about him ... I feel like Louis Theroux blames himself, almost entirely, and singularly, alone, because he feels that, had he had known _exactly_ whom Jimmy Saville was, he may have done more, especially confronting Saville over his behaviours. But, even then, all Saville may have done is not only retreat into himself, but makes out how badly the person interviewing him where, and thus banned said person from any kind of personal contact, ever again. Thus Louis faced that massive problem: how exactly do you interview someone whom decides, effectively, what questions can be asked, and which ones can't be, well before hand, and thus how to ask questions, that, subtly, steers the questioning to what you're actually you were trying to find out, and, hopefully, not get shut down, during that process ... That Louis has publicly said that Saville slipped through his fingers, and it was his fault that that happened, due to not being able to get past all of the walls, to what truly lay beneath: a monster, hiding in plain sight ... Louis is so effective because he plays the naive interlocutor so well. The subjects can't help but feel comfortable and open up to him in so many ways.
I love Louis and he always seems so nervous. He will go right into the thick of it and come within an eyelash of getting smacked in the face and still stand there.
His "interview" technique is quite brilliant - he let's his subjects speak and he always, always looks them square in the eyes, regardless of the topic. Great list but I agree that the When Louis Met episode with Jimmy Saville became deeply important in the UK after Saville's death. The anorexia film also taught me a great deal about that illness.
At the time it seemed weird and creepy. LT got close to exposing something and it seemed, at times, Saville wanted to admit to something. But is it one of LT's best? I don't think so - with considering hindsight what Saville managed to hide there, how little he gave away, the documentary makes my skin crawl. And, I'm sure, LT's too.
Cab Davidson I agree I don't think it was one of his best because it's only after the fact when you look back at it with what we know now that it becomes super creepy. But I was sure Drinking to oblivion would be on here!, it was the only one I've ever seen where Louis actually breaks his try and keep you're distance style, and got visibly emotionally involved. It also shows how unbelievably difficult it is to kick the bottle, it made me think of my own drinking habits (which were starting to get out of control at the time) powerful stuff!.
Agreed drinking to oblivion should have been in the top 10. Jimmy Saville is a must watch and Louis was closest to unearthing something but they became too friendly. Bet he regrets it a bit.
When Louis met Jimmy is really interesting, and almost quite harrowing to watch now that we know what we know. I would suggest watching it, if you can stomach seeing saville.
Yeah, I saw it twice and always felt so sorry for the kids involved. He actually made a second film about the family members and what they do today ("today" meaning the time when the second movie was made). A lot of them escaped the cult.
I've always enjoyed Louis Theroux, but to me what made me a devoted fan was when he went back to his Jimmy Saville interviews. He basically said "I was completely suckered and I should of bloody well known better". There was more self accountability and culpability in that single documentary then there was from the government, the cops and every other prick who'd covered for that monster.
Thank you for this video I had never heard of this man before and I very much look forward to seeing more of his work now that I know who he is! Thank you!
Louis does a real good job of investigating things we all think about but rarely get a real in depth look into. I'd like to see him leave America alone for a while though, maybe go to Russia or China, really push into areas that are difficult to get the truth from. I'd love to see him try North Korea but he'd probably be imprisoned lol I just think his style of questioning would be something the North Koreans really struggle with. Maybe if he carried it out from the South and got as much insider info as he could, look into the North from the DMZ. I know it's been done, but Louis always brings a fresh new approach to topics. Other topics could be the new rise of the facist right wing in Germany, or the lasting effects of the Ukraine civil war. Tackling ISIS would be another good one.
I dont understand how the bible can be objective when its completely based on faith, you can have faith that its objective truth but that completely ruins the point of objective truth.
“Travelling side-by-side with ex Scientology member Mark Rathburn” Caption on the documentary: Marty Rathbun It’s literally written out for you there, fellas
I've been to San Quentin for law school and it was an eye opening experience. Changed me for the rest of my life. If anyone gets the opportunity to get in for a tour or trip in any way I would suggest going.
There's something so empowering about an awkward, mild mannered pacifist with a death wish.
Not to mention that he looks very unassuming
Couldn't have said it better myself

What's funny is Louis is an atheist and the sound guy the Nazi pointed to was in fact Jewish.
@Tom Colins I think he's a well-known atheist
that's because Louis has big dragonbalz
That exchange made me worried for his safety in that situation
His emotionless face only becomes funnier as he enters more and more fucked up situations.
Being emotionless and having an emotionless looking face are also two very different things.
being emotionless and being gay are two very different things

Same. He's not and that's fine. Answer the question at your leisure, but not to people where the answer means - at the very least - personal shunning.

There was more self accountability and culpability in that single documentary then there was from the government, the cops and every other prick who'd covered for that monster.
This channel is much better then original watch mojo, the vids aren’t smothered with useless filler context.
Louis Theroux and David Attenborough are incredible with documentaries ❤️
Best documentarian by far!!!! And yes I just made up that word. He makes the best films in my opinion
I love Louis' documentaries, they're all so amazing! I would have included Louis and the Brothel
As I Nigerian I can tell you it's pronounced as "Lay-gos".
Tl2aV I can assure you that's not the pronunciation
A Obanya as someone who hates Nigeria go fuck yourself

I always thought lar-gos. Thanks man.
"Stop worshipping the flag, dummy! It can't save you".
YES, this.
Can't help you*
Thank you for this video I had never heard of this man before and I very much look forward to seeing more of his work now that I know who he is! Thank you!

His documentaries are great Ive watched just about every single one of them when I was in college help me passed time
Yay, I wached the top three!!!
I love his documentaries.
He is like this shy nervous guy in your group but turns out to be the bravest one. He just don't bark like a chihuahua or pitpull.
The one he went to WCW and the power plant was the best one . It was hilarious.
His documentary about the WBC is incredibly made, I've watched it so many times
“This is a little rude for the BBC.” Oh, really? Not the name? 😭🤦🏾♂️
Louis always knows the next best question to ask!
I dont understand how the bible can be objective when its completely based on faith, you can have faith that its objective truth but that completely ruins the point of objective truth.
this guy awesome, love his docs. MEN has some balls!
Louis is awesome. Very few reporters like him. Very few.
That last guy is not Tom Metzger
