So the product does its job... I feel like the video has an unjustifiably negative tone towards it... It's not the adapter's fault that there are no windows 10 drivers for a 20year old, discontinued PCI device... There are plenty of PCI cards with drivers for win7 onwards. I own many PCI cards like this, Soundblaster PCI audio cards or many Wireless LAN PCI cards coming instantly to mind. Imho this adapter is handy.

desolator XT hmmm I don't see the negativity, my conclusion was that it works, there are few but there are legitimate uses for it, and this model is poorly built. Also that it was a very quick and dirty 5 min test. I'd be interested to see others experiences with a better unit.

There are plenty of uses. Would love to see this tested with a 3DFX card under Windows 2000/XP, for example. Additionally, I believe it *may* be possible to dedicate a card to a virtual machine via PCI-e passthrough under the KVM hypervisor, paving the way for a virtual retro gaming PC that uses real hardware.

You do know that dosbox is available for Ubuntu right? This makes Win 10 and Ubuntu equally viable as choices for your use case. Ubuntu might even be better because it supports the hardware in question. I'm a bit confused because you brought it up and then dismissed it because "that doesn't help [you] with [your] interest in retro ms-dos gaming."

if you use dosbox, there is no need for legacy PCI cards whatsoever.
but if it is not DOS, i don't think a lot of old games that would require special PCI hardware (like a voodoo 3D accelerator) would even bother to run on windows 10 in the first place
the only situation where this adapter makes sense is if you have a PCI card that is still supported by modern operating systems (yes, these exist) but your new mainboard does not have PCI slots.

You could install full height cards if you got a PCI extension cable and plug it into a slot that is not in the reach of the motherboard (Full 7-slot ATX Case and 4-slot mATX motherboard.
Also, you could run DOS with this setup, since I doubt that the AsMedia chip needs any drivers. So that way you could have period correct hardware/peripherials with a modern cpu, ram and motherboard. Though you might run into the issue of not finding small enough RAM modules (less than 1gb) with something like DDR4.

Using windows Xp drivers in windows 10 is a fuckin chad move. And a massive testament to how well Microsoft treats backwards compatibility.

    • @DoubleMonoLR

@@dylanrush184 As they said, a Vista driver is considerably more likely to work though. Vista seems to have pretty much been the start of the code underlying the modern Windows versions. For example Windows 7 was barely any different to Vista, likewise changes with each new OS have seemed incremental since then.
From memory I used a Vista driver in Windows 10(& 11 I think) for a device, and it worked with no issues.

This may be useful for things like old IDE controllers, which still have support of current computers. I have such, which is a PCI slot version and is properly detected by UEFI and OS. I can even boot from it, from an "old" IDE drive. That said, IDE controllers probably are not what a retro PC fan would want to use it for anyway. However, there are new motherboards that still have native PCI slots on them. One I know of is MSI PC MATE for AM4 platform, which does have such slots. The one I am using is also MSI PC MATE but for Intel Haswell architecture. So if you really need this, I would buy a motherboard that has such a slot natively on the board, rather than buying this converter. Driver issue would be the same regardless and you avoid all problems mentioned in the video.

You could put this adapter on the last slot of the motherboard, then use the riser cable to just to the next slot in the case past the motherboard. I think the most interesting use for this sort of thing hasn't really been explored: You can pass the PCI devices to Virtual Machines, and emulate running a 5Ghz Pentium processor using modern hardware virtualization features.
Not the most useful or period-authentic thing but it might be rather neat.

  • @jameslewis2635
    @jameslewis2635 7 років тому +8

The only real use for this adaptor I can see is if you want to use the pass-thorugh feature on a virtual machine to use older hardware with old operating systems. DOSBOX would be a prime candidate for this but you could also do this with standard VM's such as VM Ware or Virtualbox. This would be handy for titles that use features like the Glide API as utilised in the Voodoo range of graphics cards.

I've recently bought one that has 2 PCI slots, based around PI7C9X111SL chip, and instead of plugging directly into PCI-e slot, comes with USB 3.0 A-to-A cable and a little PCI-e to USB socket adapter board.
I kinda liked the idea of breaking out PCI-e from my tiny mini-ITX computer on a long-ish extension lead so I could mess around with whatever PCI board right on my table, with freedom to poke things with multimeter/oscilloscope/fingers/etc :)
In that short time I had it I only had to use it with my old Aureal Vortex II soundcard, which, apparently, is still supported and is working just fine in modern Linux, even down to playing MIDIs with an external wavetable.
P.S. PI7C9X111SL datasheet states that this chip can also act as a reversible bridge, that is bridging PCI-e device to PCI slot. Although no such (cheapo) adapters available from aliexpress, it seems :(

It depends on the card you want to use, the oldest Soundblaster you can use with the Creative drivers on Windows 10 are the Audigy 1, I know I'm using it right now. The PCI128 was already having issues with Windows XP...The Live! and Live 5.1 didn't work with Vista and 7 as well but could be used with the kX drivers.
That is a pretty good trick for me, I need this card to use the Live Drive II front panel on my modern computer, and so far I've only wanted to use motherboards with a PCI slot. Those are being phased out now so I can keep using my old Audigy. on future motherboards.

This is likely, more useful to Windows 7 users as you can tend to skirt by with Vista drivers. However, to get around the mounting problem, you can use a PCI extension ribbon cable as long as there is an empty case slot that is not above the motherboard, which would interfere.

you can get the drivers for that card from the vogons site, just google "vogons drivers" or the model of the card and you'll get lots of information about it. if that's the soundcard I think it is, it's the "audiopci" that creative bought and renamed "sound blaster pci". I did some tests with that card and I got the best results with the drivers from the creative cd, not the ensoniq first release. it works kinda ok in DOS (it's not as compatible as an ISA sound blaster, and it doesn't have FM midi!! it has a wavetable general midi thing but 99% of games use fm), and it works fine in 9x. I wouldn't recommend it for a retro system anyway, an isa sound blaster pro 2 or sound blaster 16 or clone is always better, you get 100% of compatibility with everything in both DOS and win9x.

There is utility to such an adapter. The sound card you used has no Windows 10 drivers, but Windows Vista drivers are compatible and would work. And there are many other cards that would also work well as Windows 10 drivers exist for them. So for 7 pounds that is a bit of a bargain, if it can be used effectively.

What about modded drivers like DanielK? Also, I’ve used both PCI to PCIeX1 and PCIeX1 to PCI for different projects before. I think they are handy little adapters but you definitely need to find half height cards like GPUs, USB cards, and sound cards in order to fit things properly in a PC case. Another option would be to use PCI or PCIe extender cables to use a full slot instead of relying on finding half height cards. Hence, there are more options and possibilities you did not explore here.

I had that problem and I decided to install Windows Xp Sp3 and all perfect with my Sound Blaster 64... I needed the midi port to use with midi controller (Evolution MK149) that only works through midi port of that kind of cards. In the year I bought that controller Sound Blaster PCI was the best card and the controllers to use with computer usually had a non standard midi connection. In my controller connector looked as a midi standard with 5 pin but with changes in functions of those pins. Another thing, the card works as a power supply giving electric power to the controller via one of the pins.
So this video is interesting if you have a motherboard without PCI socket and you can install a Windows XP for example, for some devices. It is a shame that Creative just built drivers for old devices until Windows 7.

I don't think DOS support is principally possible with ASMedia cards at all. It appears the PEX8112 has more extensive features needed for DOS-compatible soundcards, but the required features won't just work on off the shelf mainboards. The problem is that PCI and ISA are buses, they can listen in on everything that passes through the bus, and that's been heavily relied upon on ISA soundcards and standards they in turn established in DOS software; however PCIe is not a bus, it's a switched network, so the correct data packets simply don't get routed to the card - it gets force assigned some I/O window, and that's it. That I/O write to port 0x388 AdLib/OPL simply doesn't reach any particular PCI-e card, and things get more desperate the more features you need, that's just the basics.
Similarly, some Windows and generic Linux drivers that relied on those features and bus nature of prior busses will be unable to do anything either.

The more obvious problem is that it won't fit into the case now that it is an inch up from where it is supposed to be unless it is a half height card to start with and you can make a custom bracket.

  • @adamsfusion

You say that Linux doesn't help your need for DOS gaming, but under Linux you can still pass down your native Soundblaster down to DOSBox just as well. At least in that case it can do what you want where Windows seemingly cannot.
I mean in the end, it's hard to beat a 486 with an AT style PS/2 keyboard port, but if you're going to go the weird way, might as well accept the solution might be weird as well.

X-fi music is excellent and still works with Windows 10, it would totally be worth it if it wasn't for the high prices on ebay (about 50 USD right now). I mean you could just buy a new PCI-E sound card. Another problem is the height, you'll have to modify your computer case.

If you can get 32bit Windows 10 installed, you could in theory use drivers back to XP or 2000 on it. Or if there's a 64bit XP driver, you could use it with modern Windows.

One of the positive aspects of Windows NT (5.0 and beyond., although this is true for Windows Millennium Edition as well) is that any WDM Driver is Supported.
This means provided there is a Windows 2000 / XP / Vista / 7 / 8 / 8.1 Driver available., it will install and generally work relatively issue free. In fact Windows 8 / 8.1 Drivers are 100% Compatible., at least the Drivers themselves.
What you have to watch out for are Driver Packages that include additional Software / Services, as these WILL NOT be Compatible between Windows. So it's better to Manually Install just the Driver., instead of installing the Driver Package.
Windows Automatic Driver Search will *only* update from the WHQL Driver List provided by Manufacturers... as there are typically no WHQL Drivers for the Hardware you're using, in fact Windows 10 is still has a *very* small WHQL list often resulting in the need to manually install Driver Packages, even those for Windows 10 ... this is going to be something you tend to have to deal with normally anyway.
Strictly speaking most Older Hardware while it won't always Automatically Detect as such., can typically be installed and use Microsoft Generic Drivers. Any Sound Blaster 16 Compatible Card for example, can be installed using the Microsoft WDM Audio Driver *or* Generic USB Audio Device Driver.

One could work around the height limitations by using a PCI riser cable. It would be cool if I could use my old SBLive! in my current PC. There's some hacked together driver that would enable that, with some tricks like a fully programmable DSP and using the secondary output with the better DAC as the primary one, but I couldn't get it working years ago.

You gave a biased review of this adapter card in my opinion. Its common knowledge drivers written for XP won't work on Windows 10 properly. That not the fault of the adapter card. Try the adapter card again with the same soundcard and bootup Ubuntu. I bet it would work. Most cards will work with this adapter card under Linux providing they don't have proprietary chipsets coz the Linux kernel picks up expansion cards without the need of a driver (unlike with Windoze).

RME are really great at support, I've used the card in Win 7, 8 and 10, with no problems now, and they updated the drivers just last fall. So the conclusion was just what I"d like to hear. I"l have to find one, that can contain a full-height card though.

I do not agree with the notion that you cannot use non-MS OSes for retro DOS gaming. There is a piece of software called DosBox. You can install the cards on a Linux machine and then use DosBox to run whatever DOS game you desire there. And it runs fine.

    • @RMCRetro

You are of course correct, I was referring to native DOS gaming with DOS natively installed as the primary operating system. This was a quick and dirty play around with the adapter, there appears to be enough interest for a more in depth video about it, but I think I'd want an adapter which looks like it may last a little longer than 24 hours in its build quality if I was to explore it further :D

Yeah... Drivers. That's a tough one. My motherboard in the system I still use has PCI slots.
But I tried a PCI sound card, and predictably, there's no windows drivers.
Further investigation shows the last OS supported was XP.
One thing I did try, was ReactOS, but that didn't install on my desktop - it worked on my laptop, but ironically perhaps gave no sound whatsoever.
ReactOS still needs a lot of work, I suppose.
(If you don't know what ReactOS is, it is an attempt to reverse engineer windows and create an open source alternative. - At the moment the exact goals are perfect compatibility with windows 2000. Aka NT 5.0 - it shares a substantial chunk of it's codebase with WINE, but of course, unlike WINE, implements a reverse engineered clone of the Windows NT kernel, rather than trying to run on top of linux or other unix-like systems.)

i had some old midi interface (emagic AMT8) that was supported up to XP, windows support was dropped after apple took over that company. but it was possible to with some roundabouts to get those drivers to work on later windows, but only on 32-bit, so that was kinda pointless to me
it did however work fine in a linux VM from within a more recent windows, talking the midi signals back and forth with a midi-over-ethernet virtual driver on both ends, the performance was still surprisingly good lol

I use a very nice, PCI-based soundcard called the ASUS Xonar Essence ST. Someday soon, I will need to build a new PC, and a traditional PCI slot may end up being not an option. The soundcard can be replaced with the PCIE-based STX variant, if I'm willing to cough up another $200. Obviously I've instead looked into solutions like this converter. I've mostly read about failure stories when it comes to this option -- the thing just wouldn't work. But even if it does in my case, as it seems to here, I can't help but wonder whether having a converter between the card and motherboard would end up affecting the sound quality. The whole point of using the Xonar Essence ST is the low distortion it delivers. It is essentially a headphone amp on a card. I can attest to its quality. This is a lingering question I'd love to hear an informed answer to.
