- Here's my simple way to make an emergency gate release for the Jeep JK/JKU. I have an electronic lock system, however this mod works for manual locks too.
Here's the write-up (not mine):

You will need: String, Scissors, Common Sense, and of course, your beautiful Jeep. - Розваги
The logo of the jeep and someone running away was pretty funny. It's those little things that count.
Genius.
Went with your idea but used 1/8"plastic covered cable vs rope to prevent any rope stretch if rope gets wet (and it will)
Thank you
Doesn't pertain to my model of Jeep. Was looking for something else, but I learned something, you did a great job showing and explaining and you drew a jeep on the handle so I gave you a thumbs up. Great video! Keep doing videos!
m butts thanks! this was an awesome comment to wake up to. have a blessed day!
Merci beaucoup pour tes vidéos !!
Elles m’aident beaucoup dans la découvert de ma Jeep JKU de 2011 que j’ai depuis un an .
Amicalement Jeep.
Robin.
Thanks man. Some thief tried to pop the trunk by taking a screwdriver to the lock. Need a temporary measure that won’t cost a packet.
Thank you. Last year I went to see my daughters in Montana from Quebec.I sleep in the Jeep all the way.it saved me a lots of dollars. I dint know your truk. It was me lots easier.I am return to see her this year ( after the CoronaVirus ) I am glad I seen your video.Thank again.
Effing brilliant. Thank you my friend.
Sweet nice hack sometimes I put friends in the back and hate to get out and open the back gate with this they can do it themselves no more getting out in the rain lol
Hello: So if you sleeping in back and Jeep goes up in flames before you do this fix you are toast. Good Video for sure. Para-Cord or solid core nylon should work !!! Jeep should put a release on for safety before some one dies !!
We have a 2014 hopefully this will work. Great video thanks!
Great. Thank you!
I have a Jeep Commander. A portion of the netting fell into the door jam. So it can’t be opened using the unlock-door function. I think my problem can only be cured by the dealer, unfortunately.
Thanks for your clever hack.
Great video! I sleep I my jku when camping this will be so nice to open the tailgate from the inside. One question. Does the vent grill just pop off?
wompus cat yup, like most trim pieces in the jeep. just a gentle tug and the metal clips will pop out of their hole. To re assemble just pop the panel back in place!
And yup, I sleep in my jeep all the time too. This mod is sweet.
Chris Meacham .thank you sir. Your videos are great.
wompus cat much appreciated! Comments like these keep me going!
Was your tailgate locked?
Thank you!!!!
Great idea for safety as well. Will this work with manual door locks?
r g yup! It overrides the lock and works as a manual door handle. I will actually be revisiting this mod a little later and refining the design.
Did you do another design after all?
Does this work on a 95 Jeep Wrangler
CM - What is the purpose of the chord on the Door Sensor? Does it keep the Door Sensor in the uppermost position so that the Door Ajar message is not tripped?
Todd Kirst that also controls the door lock. So the second chord allows you to unlock the door from the inside without having to mess with your key.
I don’t understand what the other cable you tied to the gate was for. Shouldn’t the pull handle work on its own if the door is unlocked? I’m going to try this on a JL and see if it’s similar.
Blair Anessi the other cable is to unlock or lock the rear gate. and let me know if it works for the JL!
Chris Meacham So if you don’t do that cable you can still undo to latch potentially as long as the door is unlocked right? I’m just checking since the gate isn’t there on a JL. I’ll let you know how it goes.
Chris Meacham I did this to my JL yesterday. Similar to what you did. Didn’t do a second cable. Here’s my write up. www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/tailgate-release-handle.7650/#post-185010
Even though I have a JK, I checked out your link and just want to say that you did an excellent job. Also, importantly, you were kind enough to list the parts. Now I am off to AMAZON to get the parts and do the same on my JK. I sleep in mine on off road trips so this come in handy. No kids!
Lol.. whoops.. simple hack, thanks for sharing
How do you take the cover off?
Linda C just pull on the corners, or you can just pry it off at the corners with a screwdriver.
Whats the point of the rope through the grate?
Can be used to unlock gate from inside. Pulling on just the latch release won’t unlock it.
@@developmentdivision122 I'm confused. The rope around the latch unlocks the door. Why the rope through the plastic piece on the grate?
Anyone tried this on a JL?
I have a 2016 jku, didn't work for mine. seems we have different latches.
That's strange! I would search the forums.. mine is a 2011, sorry my video didn't work for yours :(
Maybe put "Wrangler" in the title. This isn't helpful for the Grand Cherokee bunch. Thanks anyway though!
