    This channel is so inspiring! I am excited to see someone who is as skilled as you are willing to provide educational information to people who are just starting learning about CNC machines.

    When picking the boundary I think you can hold down the alt key to enable picking single entities. That would allow you to work your way around that mouth area.

    Hey! Thanks John. Great tip!
    Just want to say thanks for all your videos. If I'm honest you have got me into CNC and I'm loving it. I've build my own home router and my plans are far greater. Thanks for teaching, I love learning.

    Another great video. Learning soooo much from you and Lars! For machine time, I found that if you go to your preferences and CAM, you can click show machine time, and it will show the time right next to each of the operations in the tree on the left side. I find it handy!

    @11:25 (ish) when you have that un-machined scallop of mat'l at the top of the profile that you wanted to get rid of. You used "Contact edge of boundary" check box to take care of it. Sometimes this is due to the tool step over you've chosen where the CAD program will evenly divide the profile by the step over you've chosen and it doesn't come out even so there is some mat'l left at the top edge like you're seeing. Changing the step over to a tad smaller or larger increment can also alleviate this mat'l in a similar way. When we're doing step-over for a ball mill in our shop we generally use .004" (.1 mm) but sometimes it needs to be slightly more or less, so the CAD back-end can evenly divide that step-over in to the chosen geometry nearly completely. The "Contact edge of boundary" is a nice option too though and maybe that gives you some idea why that left over mat'l is created in the first place.

    Thanks for the video. I have only done a couple 3d toolpaths so far, and I have to say some of the options can be a little overwhelming and/or vague, so videos like this are very helpful.

    Hey John, the trouble you're having with selecting the boundary is because you didn't select the "Open Boundary" (Looks like a backwards capital C) icon when you "Left clicked on the boundary after it turns red" around 4:11. This will allow you to select any segment of the boundary. Then you can click once to select the segment you want, click again to deselect it.

    Great tips John, but would have liked to see the finial SIM on that. I'm betting it looked pretty good. Thanks for sharing all you do.

    just found another super easy way to do this.
    In the parallel path window there is a check box called "avoid/touch surfaces"
    its under the geometry tab. lets you select all the surfaces you want the tool path to ignore or machine.
    It was a super eureka moment finding that badboy, really lets you focus the finishing the right area so you
    can make those step overs smaller but still making good time.

    Hey bud! DoRite Fabrication just mentioned you and asked us to greet and subscribe to you (shout out) and we're here to welcome and subscribed and liked your video & channel. He is an awesome UA-camr and we're glad to know that you have contributed enough to be mentioned on his channel. Congratulations to you and hope to see you again soon my friend! :D

    The orange thing that is annoying it the 'Profile' and it's there because when you select a surface as a sketch plane fusion automatically projects that surface to the sketch. I don't know how to turn this off so I just delete everything before I start drawing. Also try using avoid/touch for finishing containment. This means you can just draw an oversized box around the feature you need to machine and then just select anything in that box that you don't want to touch! I use this all the time for finishing and I wish they had it for adaptive roughing!

    Great video as always John. I have just one question for you... at minute 12:30 you describe the toolpath "noise" (toward the taper in the finger) as necessary, but that all disappeared after you applied your last constraint selection strategy. Given that the finger geometry didn't change, was it not necessary after all? Ciao, Marco.

    Love your videos! gonna be watching a lot more here very soon.
    I also really like how you show on screen everything that you type, but was wondering if I could offer one possible suggestion for that part?!
    because they pop up and change so fast while your typing maybe have it where they scroll out to the left and fade out as you type that way it's a little easier to read it.
    Again thanks for the great content your putting out there!

    Can't decide which cam to learn, choosing between Siemens NX and Fusion 360. I am familiar with NX and have post-processors for my mills, but it looks a bit outdated compared to FUSION, any advice on this guys?

    • @ScottMoyse
      @ScottMoyse 8 років тому

      Cobrass2 the cost is night and day. Fusion is a fraction of the cost of NX. NX is better with simultaneous 4&5 and high end mill/turn. But Fusion is better everywhere else and much more accurate surfacing toolpaths.

    Hey John, your final parallel tool path does not have the same geometry for the top of the finger pocket as just after you selected to use contact point boundary. Could you explain why that happened?

    • @TheWidgetWorks
      @TheWidgetWorks 8 років тому

      Simple, the pocket is tapering out at that point so the angle between the 'wall' and the top is becoming shallower. As a result the tool is required to step closer to the edge still contact the boundary, make sense?

    • @kickinrocks101
      @kickinrocks101 8 років тому

      The very final tool path in the video @ 16:39 does not have the same tool path at the nose of the pocket flaring out to the boundary as @ 12:37. Is this an oversight: did switching the machining boundary to his projected sketch change the contact point boundary setting?

    • @TheWidgetWorks
      @TheWidgetWorks 8 років тому

      Oh, that's what you were on about, my mistake. I suspect that there was something funky going on at 12:37 , I've had this kind of stuff happen and I suspect it just something odd in the algorithm generating that weirdness.

    Hey John, If i send you a CAD file that i drew in fusion, would you be willing to do a video on how to edit it? It's a "radial" type suppressor baffle, I'm trying to make it so that it has a solid face, as opposed to a thru hole, so it can be sold with solvent traps. I can't seem to learn Fusion for the life of me! You'll also be welcome to use the cad file for personal form 1 builds in the future, if you're interested
