Sly & Robbie are more than just a rhythm section. Starting out in the heyday of roots reggae, this formidable duo helped to transform Jamaican music into the globe-conquering phenomenon it is today, shaping the sound of the mighty Black Uhuru, and unleashing hits by numerous others on their own Taxi label. In addition to being kingpins of their own scene, they were also the ’80s go-to producers for international stars such as the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Grace Jones.
In this lecture at the 2008 Red Bull Music Academy in Barcelona, they discuss all of this and share of the secrets behind their relentless hit-making machine.

Maximum respect to this dynamic duo. Rest In Peace to the Bassman Robbie Shakespeare.
R.I.P. Robbie. Amazing grooves.
Sly and Robbie, reggae music would not be what it is without you guys. Thanks for your contribution to reggae and world music. Hotep.
Their influence goes way beyond reggae
I am so devastated...... All I can do is sit and remember the good old days at Compass Point in the Nassau Bahamas 😭😭😭
RIP to one of the greatest bass players of all times
#Genius #Jamaica #Reggae
Never met Robbie, but met Sly. Good humble Brethren! Love from 🇯🇲♥️!
No doubt! Met him at a Phila. concert just walking thru the crowd while the opening act was playing. Nobody recognized him! Brotha should be considered one of the all time great drummers regardless of genre.
SLY AND ROBBIE DESERVE TO BE IN THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME.... and that's THAT!!
Totally agree.massive to the world of reggae.
But reggae music is not Rock and Roll, why should Rock and Roll claim their success? America never promoted reggae or Sly and Robbie.
@@arianadoyen1216 rockers galore. You ain't got a clue
@@arianadoyen1216 They played rock n roll among many other genres in their unique reggae style. As they said in the interview
@@nyakwarObat "Rockers" is a sub-genre of REGGAE not Rock and roll. Apparently you dont have a clue. I was a reggae radio host and reggae music store manager throughout the 80's and 90's. I know Sly and Robbie. what they played for rock and roll artists was done as a favor and made a minimal impact on their success.
I met Sly at an IOJ session over a year ago in the stair well. I was blown away... he was so easy to talk to!!. I am forever grateful for that eventful meeting. Especially as Robbie wasn’t there and now he is gone... listened to their music over the years...
RIP Robbie a real GOAT on the bass
The LEGENDARY Immortal Rythm Twins Sly&Robbie all time Grates..
wow! great to see this... and credit where credit is due, finally a good interviewer on a red bull show-ask the question, listen, respond with a followup question, listen ....guy left space for the artists to talk, props to him...
Who cares what Rolling Stone magazine ranks Sly Dunbar in their top 100 drummer.
For the simple fact that SLY DUNBAR and Robbie Shakespeare has played and recorded over 250,000 recordings plus numerous international hits... Make
Sly Dunbar the Greatest Drummer PERIOD.....👊🏿 🥁
their enormous output well respected, yet the assumption they have contributed to 250.000 recordings can only be a slight case of irrealistic exaggeration for the maths do simply not work out. that would mean they have laid town an average of 14 tracks each and every day through 50 years...that is simply impossible.
@@laszlojasz3006 they didn't play on all of them at a session, the tracks were used by other artists and producers
@@laszlojasz3006 lol , do be quiet
250000 is crazy - if Carol Kaye one of the most prolific bassists of all time played on 10000 or 15000 records - 100000 is impossible
RESPECT to Robbie rip
No disrespect intended - sending respect to the wrecking crew and Stax and Motown and the Jamaican mafia ;)
Remember Jamaica has a riddim culture meaning they made single backing tracks that 10 or 15 different artists would go on to record over. This multiplied their output significantly!
Me listen Sly and Robbie music 🎵 every day 🎼🎶🎵🖤❤️💛💚🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸

You don’t know about family man, you know right; you know sey him bad.... I love that. He respects his mentor
forever rest in beats, Mr "Basspear"
RIP TO THE "ORIGINAL BASSIE".....🎸🤴🏿💜💔
R.I.P.
Just great and very informative, thank you. BIG UP - Sly & Robbie.
love it, to see them jamming
About Carlton Barrett and Sly Dunbar is 2 kind different styles. Beautiful drummers !
I can't believe the interviewer does not know Aston "Familyman" Barrett
Robbie just said “Family Man,” and the interviewer may have missed that, not connected the dots that it was Family Man Barrett from the Wailers. So much of this interview is very clear if you already know the background-the players, clubs, studios, artists from Kingston 40-50 years ago. But not everyone knows that. Robbie thought he should have known though! “You don’t know bout Family Man??!?”
@@percussionboy4357 Well, like I said, if I interview one of the best bass players in the history of Reggae Music I come prepared. This guy obviously didn't.

@@percussionboy4357 like there's loads of 'family mans' 😄
@@robertlund5694 LIke I already said … not everyone knows their Jamaican musical history like they should. I’ve known about Mr. Barrett for decades myself … and Robbie (RIP) … and Lloyd Parks … and Boris Gardner … and Flabba … and Ranchy. The list goes on…[edit] … Val Douglas too…
Sly Dunbar 👌 Robbie Shakespeare 👌
"Try It" from Black Uhuru, that bass
