He may not be the Godfather, but Bootsy Collins sits at the centre of funk’s engine room. First with James Brown, then with Parliament-Funkadelic, his were the basslines that fueled the grooves that have kept modern music bumping. From Cincinnati to stages worldwide, Collins embraced the potential of the music he was a part of and in the process became one of funk’s best-known and loved representatives.
In this lecture at the 2011 Red Bull Music Academy, he retraces his early steps, recalls the JB’s military discipline, the liberation of P-funk and explains why Jimi Hendrix was the inspiration for it all.

he seems like just a genuine, nice guy, naturally intelligent, no ego.
I agree
Bootsy Baby!!! 1love
All the LSD he took in that era made em melo
B🌟🌟TziLLa...coolest dude on the planet ...hows your funk🤘

One of the other reasons why P-Funk got on that psychedelic trip was because at heart, George Clonton was a big old hippie. If he heard there was a Grateful Dead concert anywhere near him, after the Funkadelic, Parliament performances he would stroll on over to the concerts and hang out.
His James Brown impersonation is crazy good
The great Bootsy was awesome here in spite of the totally weak interviewer and audience.
Catfish is too damn smooth and funky . Tight. Just unbelievable. Ain’t no one can play like him still.
Bootsy is cool. Love the sound of his voice. It's like he is eternally 17.
Love him as much as in the 1970s. A beautiful man, killer bass player, anot not the slightest bit full of himself. Gratitude and a hug.
Bootsty is an incredible communicator. It’s like listening to Tommy Tedesco, Hal Blaine and the many others that have appeared here. When these events were happening with “Bootsy” there was no internet, bloggers/publicists reporting what was happening daily with the bands and production the Road, Club and studio. So these interviews are like “ Story Time With Uncle Bootsy”.. they are interesting, raw and truthful and so much fun to listen to. But they are Funk History .
Bootsy would be the coolest cat in the room even if there where no walls.
Bootsy would be the coolest cat in the room, even if there was no "mouth"
@@keithbell9348 Lol good one! 1love
That's a right on foh sho.
That music was my breathing apparatus. It gave me forward motion. ( I want all your clothes)
Wisdom one of the soulful top bassist in the world if not the best others I like Nile Rodgers chic Larry graham Rick James like boots said the real bangers was the ones who never pursued their gift and got distracted in this worlds life
The Katt in the hat...Bootsys swagg is off the chain for real. That sexy smile of his is why I watch the videos.
Everytime I see Bootsy I'm a kid again. Parliament Funkadelic & Bootsy's Rubber Band was the first concert I went to without my parents
The fact that parliament was the JBs is mind blowing to me. But at the same time makes so much sense.
I saw the original uncut video of this on the Red Bull site in 2014. It's too bad they had to cut out the music. Bootsy demonstrating how he came up with the basslines for Funkentelechy and Sir Nose were priceless
I was so bummed when that cut away. Funkentelechy is one of my favorite cuts of all time!
Where can you see the uncut version?
I had no idea what an incredible dude and legend he is. I never heard him talk regular (im 55). This interview is phenomenal. What a wonderful time to spend. God bless him.
I keep commenting, but I keep being impressed by this dude. he seems like a real good guy. world needs more people like him, even if they cant play bass.
i could listen to bootsy stories all day, legend
It's Baba. And It's just a Parliafunkadelicment thang
Me too
Wow... @BootsyCollins should do a true documentary about his experiences with the man James Brown because he's got him down...
You should check out "Mike Judge Presents Tales From The Tour Bus". It's on cinemax, but you can find the clips on UA-cam...Bootsy and the rest of The Pacemakers got some stories on James Brown!
@@HpHH83 Yes they do my friend
I was just gonna say watch tales from the tour bus. That show was definitely underrated and I wish they were able to touch other genres.
"Searching for perfection"
"The process of not knowing and the experience of getting there."
What a brillant musicologist and storyteller. 🤗
Thanks Bootsy for this great and authentic narrative and refering to intellect and genius of James Brown and George Clinton. 😎
Thanks Red Bull and Bootsy for making this moment available for all of us to see and hear. So many jewels and gems 💎💎💎in Bootsy's testimony... So much wisdom and wealth in his words ... great point about loosing a certain quality of the "funk".
Bootsy telling stories and dropping wisdom!!! Love it!!!!!!
And no doubt dropping some brightly coloured pills
This is a very great lecture in music coming from Bootsy Collins 🏆🏆I’ve always supported him. One of the greatest guitar players of all time. Talented, humble and willing to help someone. I love him❤❤❤❤❤
Bootzilla, Hollywood Squares,& Rather be with you are 3 great classics that never get old...2020.

Lonnie Mack's "Memphis", was the song that was played on the radio. Circa 1963-1964.
Bootsy is always happy.
I was in high school when Bootsy hit big. One of my all-time favorites
You lived in quite the Era for music!
IVE BEEN A BOOTSY FAN, I LEARNED FROM HIM THAT MELODY IS SHORT FOR THE WORD MELODIC.
Interviewer has the personality of a stapler.
So glad Bootsy is stll with us
Like my Grandmama used to say, give me My Roses while I'm still here! So we need to appreciate this Excellence while he Still here.
Amen to that 👏🏻
Bootsy is a true musician. He likes alot of types of music. When you hear something that pleasing to ear you don't care what genre, race or anything else you just hear music.
Stumbled upon this. This was PHENOMENAL!!!
Watching this dull interviewer and boring audience in the presence of a funk legend was like watching paint dry. Geeez!!!! I grew up in the 1970's and had the pleasure of going to a Parliament Funkadelic concert featuring Bootsie while in college. Pure joy!!! Bootisie, Star Child, the Brides of Funkenstein and of course Dr. Funkenstein himself were all onstage. Magical!!!!
Bootsy said the greatest musician take themselves out. How true!
Much Gratitude
BOOTSY IS LEGEND,NO A LIVING LEGEND.
What a great interview, not to mention the excellent advice he gave towards the end. The funk was what I gravitated to as a young man, and I'm still with it. I give thanks.
Brilliant and generous interview Bootsy baby. Love you Bootsy ❤️
In the crazy remote chance that Mr. Collins might happen to see this comment, Thank You Mr. Collins. And May The Good Lord bless and keep you and your family. Everything I've had the privilege of seeing or rather hearing, has been beneficial to a degree beyond my ability to express. You are in my prayers.
Of course I understand it's a message in a a bottle. ..... funk it.why the funk not.
Fantastic interview! Thank You 4 this and most importantly KEEP DA FUNK ALIVE ! ! !
Bootsy is such a great story teller with a great philosophy of life!
bootsy is HILARIOUS!!! thanks so much this couldn't stop laughing throughout
Bootsy! So much fun!
"The Mad Hatter" has entered the building; and he gonna funk it up!
The Bootsey "rubber bass" is goin- 'ta blow your damn mind!
James Brown to Jimi Hendrix to P-Funk.
Whatever is hip is funky and vice-versa.
Devotion transcends babba
🎸 🔊 🎼 ✨️ 🎶 🌟 🌈 💖
Funny to hear Bootsy talk about Lonnie Mack. He was Stevie Ray Vaygn's inspiration too.
A humble intelligent musician alwys wearing matching clothes glasses n his bass guitar love him n rest of p-funk
The LEGENDARY Mr. Bootsy Collins
Funkadelica Nation; Prince was a George Clinton disciple who knew how bring the music together. And Bootsy Collings was so under-rated bass player to public but those who in the know Bootsy would kickstart the show.
Yes he was. Prince also used some Eddie Hazel riffs on some of his songs.
@@abrahamjackson6019 I think on do me baby
The Angle of the Dangle!
One of the coolest cats to ever do it. Seem chill AF and just a good human :)
these interviews are always so dope aside from the hosts. they always look completely uninterested and don't even seem to care that they're talking to actual legends in music business.
That's the same vibe I felt from this guy interviewing Bootsy....like he's not really into sitting along side greatness...good catch URBVN
Facts!! Watch the GC one these fools did. And I mean FOOLS!! Completely disrespectful to such greatness, and never follows up when there’s an opening to facts we as fans want to know. I’m done with this series. Garbage interviewer!!
Host is a square, that’s why. Nailed it bud, thanks for speaking my mind for me hahah dude prolly listens to fuckin buckcherry and shit🤣
Well said. I was thinking the same thing.
Well; he was either high; or very much sleep deprived 😂
The Rhinestone Rock Star Bootsy is the dopest
I had the pleasure of meeting
BOOTSEY when I was working at
Mannie's music store in 86' , just
5 minutes of his time and he enlighten
Me advice and hope .....shook my hand
And I felt like the funk ran thru my veins.
I don't mind being used, just don't "misuse" me. Thank you Bootsy what a wonderful thought.
Bootsy tell his story on how he got started in music. And the ones that give him a chance to explore his talent in music.
AHHH The Name is Bootsy Baby!
D-Mack, YEEEEEEEEES SIIIIIIIR😉
Best album.
Thank you Bootsy, for your music and your very interesting thoughts!
34:09 The part of not knowing, Help the experience of getting there.🔥🔥

ya'll pressed lol this just a chill interview - he letting the legend breathe, giving him space to Be.
I felt like a fly in Bootsies therapy session 😳🤘🏿
"Aaaaah, the name is Bootzilla, baby!"
Thanks Red Bull Music.
Bootsy baby!
So much talent in the Collins Brothers
To know Bootsy live in the ‘70s as a white guy with a sister as a gf and the bass as your future instrument; is to be amazed at his lucidity and forthright personality in this modern day of 2011? How is it possible the 18 year old freak is the wise old man?!

I love this show. Learning alot too- "control and surrender in the creative process" really stuck.
if i could have been there man....id take over for the interviewer he seems like hes reading from a script
Ancient Soul music💞🎶 nothing but concentrated Funk 🎶💯
Bootsy is a very underrated artist. Doesn't have to curse or rap to get noticed.
? What does rap have to do with this?
With-out the 1970's funk , there would be no hiphop .
You are certainly telling the TRUTH!
If there weren’t no james brown hip hop wouldn’t be what it exactly is.
Your music made my honey relationship together sailing the San Francisco Bay ! Till he pass 🙏 Thank you cause my son even heard your song that they made a early hip-hop song , when he heard it ✌️ helvisllllll look
L
Was so bllowed away, thk u 😘 ♥️♥️♥️
You gave my son a big influence on music ♥️😘
Excellent choice and very well spoken ❤.
Only reason boosty still here with us till this day he stopped the partying salute 🫡

"I guess give a warm welcome, to Bootsy Collins" YOU GUESS???? CHEER FOR THE FUNK KING YOU CRETIN!!!
BTW people's ,Lonnie Mack is a white dude who's best album is " Strike like Lightning " ,he was funk/country / blues .
I don't know how I can take him seriously in that hat, I only really noticed it an hour and a half in
Pushin boundaries is always met with resistance at first: "boo".
Eventually, it's the hippest thing in town.
So keep flyin high musical 🎶 astronauts, embrace the funk. 🎸
BOOTSY A LEGEND
Lonnie Mack. Good to hear Bootsy talk about the amazing playing of Lonnie Mack
I love that he cited Lonnie Mack as a influence...lol ...I wouldnt have expected that.. I studied a tutorial video by Lonnie Mack...hes very country boy seeming...love his video rip Lonnie
Real women will follow they man to the end! All the way
Some comments about the interviewer having no personality. I saw it as he had no ego and stayed out of the way. Seemed respect to me.
Awesome dude.
I was distracted because I used to have this shirt Bootsy is wearing 😅
We couldn't be allowed to see the first video that Bootsey brought? J e s u s H.
asww i wanted to see the videos he was showing them....i love him so much!
Hearing Bootsy not doing his voice is different.
''eatin mouf'' actually sounds like a pfunk/bootsy song
Right on!!!
You're the man Bootsy. Musical Zen man.
"The things that challenge you in life- they can't get you unless you let them".
To paraphrase the wise ✨️ one 🕉 (!)
I would love to see the unedited version of this
Wow - what a neat Guy Bootsie Collins is. "Go-Cat- Go, Man: You're the Greatest !"
SOOOO cool and interesting to hear the stories √√√ ----- But also SOOOOO sad to see all the cut out stayed unseen = X
What Bootsy said @35:23 is how black people have made it through all the suffering we are going through.
On the one baby!
God Almighty, that man has a voice as smooth as frozen custard.
Bootsy amazing interview 🙌...the interviewer was lame asf tho 🙄
Angle of The Dangle lol
I HAD A PICTURE AND A BLACK LIGHT IN MY ROOM TO ON JIMI.
