Small displacement engines definitely struggle with towing fuel economy, especially under heavy loads or heavy strain (soft sand). It's the trade off as is longevity compared to bigger engines. Bigger engines are thirsty under normal driving (empty) but when the loads are added, that's where they pay off.

Hi Ronny, great to see ya at the Adelaide 4x4 show on Friday👍🏼 The quick fix for the man cave door hitting the jockey wheel is to flip the wheel 180 inwards. Problem solved👍🏼👍🏼 had the same issue…

Great review. We have a different brand trailer, of similar design. We fitted a Bushman’s 270 awning. Can’t recommend it highly enough. Quick set up and down, no poles and super solid. Worth every cent. Walls available too. Worth consideration, the only con if you had to find one, little heavier than most 👍.

    Hi Ronny,
many thanks for a very informatively inside user view and comparison.
Scrolling to the reviews, the old question comes every time back from the audience: trailer vs. van.
Actually for such an experienced audience it should not be brought into comparison.
The one fits all is not feasible!
Living full time in a off-road van limits you to where you can go and not.
But can carry the things required to stay out for months or even years without a house as base camp.
Going out for a couple weeks with a off-road trailer nearly anywhere but with the limited fit out, requires a base camp, house or apartment to return to.
    Our solution would be:
We have an off-road caravan for live-in and would be glad for more extreme trips to rent such a compact off-road trailer if possible. It’s all subject the personal circumstances.
Anyhow, that’s my point of view…
    Cheers…

Ronny...I can highly recommend a tune. We have a 2010 Prado 150 with the old 3litre D4D. We noticed a great change with fuel economy and power both towing and without. Worth it 100%. Good torque gains and notice it a lot while towing. Our issue is the 5-speed auto and torque converter. Have bought a lock-out kit, pending install, which should help with the TC running up and down on the highway

Great review. I also had the infuriating problem with the jockey wheel interfering with the opening of the man cave. I found a solution by just loosening off the clamp bracket bolts and twisting it ever so slightly so that the grease nipple on the wheel drops into the gap in the drawbar frame and suddenly there’s clearance. Takes 10 minutes and so much better.
Also, made up aluminium wind shields for the stove for windy conditions and the stove works great too!

Ronny, you can get a valve which will bypass the water in the "hot" line so it flows back into the tank until the water going through the valve gets hot. You turn the hot tap on and no water flows out until it is hot. Reduces the water wastage you described.

I don't think you can compare a trailer and a caravan for Ronny's Kind of usage. Mostly small, tight tracks with low clearence. The weight and the mere chance of (inevitable) damage to a caravan would make it prohibative. I have a 23 ft caravan with all the fruit, but after watching Ronny's video's, which originally started because I've just ordered a new Hilux and saw his project by chance, I am now looking at combining the two. Decking out the Hilux to do back to roots camping as well as retaining my 200 and caravan for those different type of trips. In general Ronny loving the videos. Really helpful in picking out what's relevant for me and making informed decisions etc. so from that perspective, I couldn't ask for more. See around the roads in Wangara and beyond. Cheers and thanks

  • @leeobe

Hi Ronny, I've got an X1 with extended drawbar so I can open the rear door on my Prado. I find it still tracks well in tight spots - the extension is only 200mm. Also I have no problems opening the man cave with the jockey wheel stored on the drawbar. Maybe it's the extended drawbar but the A-frame and jockey wheel storage mount looks the same on your X1N as it does my X1. Maybe Justin or Tommy can explain? Agree reversing is more tricky the shorter the drawbar. Cheers Lee

Great video Ronnie. Out of curiosity what leaf rates are you running in the back of the Hilux for towing? Im sure its been covered in prior videos but Im running 600kg constants which for towing is incredible. Unladen though is like driving around on wooden blocks and doesnt help much when driving tough terrain due to its rigidity whilst unladen.

@@christurner68 please note this from me. I normally not reply to such sub commences, but like to help out with my near 20 years experience with all sort of latches and breakages thereof.
      1. This stainless latches used in that size are the best you can get.
      2. Adjustment of tightening plays a big rule. Everything is constantly moving on corrugated roads. So when they are to tight adjusted all the force is going to the swivel bolt and wears them out. Adjust them a tick looser, glue a thin rubber strip behind the frame as cushion and wear item easy to renew. (That is at least how I do it)
      3. Next level upsize latches are far more bulkier and heavier, no place to fit and will tear apart the tongue side frame or door structure.
4th. And most important thing is:
These latches are a kind of wear part in my opinion and I am happy with the live time and low cost for replacing such things regular as with bigger sturdier latches breaking the doors which would require re welding and paint jobs.
Hope that could help to understand a little better the subject.
