Unfortunately I was only a little boy when Rostropovich was alive, so I didn't get the chance to see him live. I'm so glad we have the ability to record such amazing performances now :-)
Some have claimed this to be the most ambitious cello concerto ever written. It takes a lot of skill and many years of hard practice to play something like this, let alone to play it well.
I was sitting here. Watching this clip. Rostropovich drew the bow across the strings. And at that second, I became entranced at this captivating performance. I was in awe.
Suffice it to say, regardless of the "pop"ularity of what you hear on the top 40 radio stations, most of it will be soon forgotten. It's music of the moment, and entertains many. Music of true worth, in whatever genre, will survive and be appreciated hundreds of years from now as we appreciate them today.
This is one of the most sublime pieces of music in the cello repertoire, played by one of the great cellists with a great orchestra and a great conductor. That should be the starting point to any comments.
He´s one of the greatest, ever. The conductor is incredible too. I suggest to watch a Mozart´s piano concert nr 23 with him as a conductor and Horovitz on the piano.
The opening of the concerto is very deep impress for me.The great cellist also play with brilliant skills and music feellings.I love you my great cellist.
Watching Rostropovich in person was amazing. I saw him several years ago with the Seattle Symphony, and in his mid-80's he bounded onto the stage with his cello, as much energy, it seemed as a man much, much younger, and he played that way too.
I don't think anyone could compose better for the Cello than Dvorak. Although there are many pieces I like for the cello, Dvorak's pieces are always top of the line.
Dvorak was elected Master of the Universe in 1532 and reigned for over 300 years. It was only after Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven won the Great Music War of 1835, dethroning Dvorak, that history was rewritten. Trying to recover from the loss of his status as Master of the Universe, Dvorak challenged Vivaldi to a composition contest for the heart of Clara Schumann. Vivaldi wrote a short cantata about how red his hair was, and Dvorak wrote this. Guess who won.
I love this video for two reasons, first Rostropovich is one of the greatest musicians of all time and second the Dvorak concerto is brings about a full use of the cello's unique voice. But I also hate watching this video because I see the comments riddled with petty argument opposed to praise and admiration of a historic performer and a historic piece.
This is amazing and strenuous cello playing. I was practicing heavy vibrato and my doc thinks I pinched a nerve I will limit free weights and cello for a little while put on a mild muscle relaxer and told to take it easy.
I´m totally with you! I´m playing this concerto with my orchestra, and the music is just outstanding! It´s another thing to play it than listening to it, but just to here the piece gives me goose pimples!
There are usually two types of musicians. The ones who have mastered technique, and those who can really show emotion and beauty in their playing. Rostropovich has mastered both types of playing.
Wonderful! I had an presenation about Dvorak last year when I attended musical high school, and I got to show an excerpt of this piece to the whole class! :D They were more into hip hop and other filth though... xD
Your theory both fascinates and entertains me. And subsequently, makes me laugh. :D But much respect to your imaginative mind. I'm thinking Dvorak definitely won, what with making this my absolute favorite cello concerto (specifically this movement) of all time. Though the Elgar cello concerto comes to a close second... Much respect to those such as Dvorak and Elgar, not only for their accomplishments, but for instilling a desire to learn the instrument within me.
@imperiumdiaboli I'm studying this in class and that is exactly what I said when listening to it. I couldn't find any article confirming it, but he did write the first movement as a tribute to his sister-in-law's death (whom he secretly loved), and Brahms helped Dvorak get his career going. And with the Brahms Requiem pre-dating this concerto, it's quite possible that he used a Brahms Requiem quote for his own "requiem movement" for his sister-in-law. Fascinating
You may say some are more precise ; some play more in tune ; some put more delicateness. But Rostropovich has something unreal : wherever he puts his bow and left hand fingers, the sound is the same, brilliant, robust, singing ; never weak or plaintive ; always enthusiastic and moving.
Janos Starker's interpretation is in the top 5 interpretations of the Dvorak. And the one of Rostropovich with Karajan is in the top 5 too. Different styles but both amazing in their way.

Metaphysical question : did Dvorak know he was writing this concerto for Rostropovich ?
i found this piece on LP - berlin phil. + karajan + rostropovich = what a beauty for 10cz crounds/not even 50us cents. one of the best buys of my life(;
@musicman1724 It will......And then it will reach 2 million.....And most likely 1 billion. Because music this great will never, EVER die. Just look how long it has been since it was written. And you better believe that the internet will keep it alive for many more hundreds, even thousands of years to come.
well, i love metal, u know, metallica (ftw), iron maiden, etc...but I play the classical cello and for me classical music is the root of modern rock, blues, and modern musical expression, at least in the west. I've played this piece many times, it is simply wonderful
With all due respect to the kind of skill it takes to successfully perform a piece like this, that is not the only way to measure the quality of music. If anything I think a more important question would be what kind of feelings it evokes when heard and/or seen, and that will be totally different for different listeners.
Rostropovich is the best cellist ever!!! Not only his technique, but also how he express music!!! Master of cellist!!! BRAVO!
Unfortunately I was only a little boy when Rostropovich was alive, so I didn't get the chance to see him live. I'm so glad we have the ability to record such amazing performances now :-)
The gestures of a master with his baton, conducting a symphony orchestra, takes us to a transcendental symbiosis with the music of the soul.
not only rostropovichs interpretation was beyond awesome, the orchestra was really great as well for a change
Волшебная музыка, браво, браво, бравооо!!! Автору музыки, дирижёру, оркестру, солисту, всем!!! 🎶👏✨👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Some have claimed this to be the most ambitious cello concerto ever written. It takes a lot of skill and many years of hard practice to play something like this, let alone to play it well.
Rostropovich's performance is the Platinum standard for this concerto, hands down.
Such an incredible moment in history. No one played this piece as perfect as Rostropovich.
it seriously saddens me how great music like this are dying in this world
Rostropovitch really was absolutely fantastic. I heard him several times during his earlier years in London. He was truly incredible!! RIP
We will never forget him.
He was the Great & Best cellist!!
Sublime, j'aime la musique de Dvorak et Rostropovich était un grand artiste
My favorite part is from 5:50 to 6:00. Just that small part where he plays alone... I can't explain why... It's out of this world! :')
Jerdna Lesik check out the two quasi cadenzas in the second movement
I was sitting here. Watching this clip. Rostropovich drew the bow across the strings. And at that second, I became entranced at this captivating performance. I was in awe.
so much passion and emotion, wonderful!

Truly the greatest vehicle created for the cello in all music history.
C.M. Giulini and Rostropovich ! Two legends !
A very lot of thanks
The 'powerful' moments at the end make the hairs on the back of my neck stand-up - it is so good!
This is one of the most sublime pieces of music in the cello repertoire, played by one of the great cellists with a great orchestra and a great conductor. That should be the starting point to any comments.
Rostropovich is the uncrowned king! Unmatched in skill!
I really admire Rostropovich he was in my opinion one of the best cellists ever.
He´s just amazing I hope that one I´ll play the way he played
He´s one of the greatest, ever. The conductor is incredible too. I suggest to watch a Mozart´s piano concert nr 23 with him as a conductor and Horovitz on the piano.
His trino is amazing!!!!
Rostropovich rules forever!!!
The opening of the concerto is very deep impress for me.The great cellist also play with brilliant skills and music feellings.I love you my great cellist.
classical music is by far the best type of music in the world
Watching Rostropovich in person was amazing. I saw him several years ago with the Seattle Symphony, and in his mid-80's he bounded onto the stage with his cello, as much energy, it seemed as a man much, much younger, and he played that way too.

This is probably the best cello concerto I have ever heard. It really brings out the best in the cello. Bravo, Dvorak as well as Rostropovich!
This concerto opens with such a beautiful melody.....
Oh My God, Rostropovich, you is D+ !!!!!
Even as a brass musician I've learned so much from this man. Love his style.
I can't believe he is from my hometown, Baku, Azerbaijan. Awesome man!
He makes it look so easy! Got to hear him perform this live with Ozawa and Boston at Carnegie Hall shortly before he died. Unforgettable.
My teacher's teacher was Rostropovich. So I really am his grand-disciple and met him once.

Cello has such a beatiful voice.

we hear good music in the most unusual places! enjoy it whereever!
hang on.. I am a huge lover of Classical Music, have been for ages, but i am also a lover of (good) hip hop music.
This is amazing and strenuous cello playing. I was practicing heavy vibrato and my doc thinks I pinched a nerve I will limit free weights and cello for a little while put on a mild muscle relaxer and told to take it easy.

Rastropovich è un dio!concerto stupendo
I love the horn!
Quelle musique boulversante. Quelle intérpretation magistrale.
There are usually two types of musicians. The ones who have mastered technique, and those who can really show emotion and beauty in their playing. Rostropovich has mastered both types of playing.
How could anyone dislike this?
Este concierto de Dvorak para cello ejecutado magistrarmente por Rostropovich es una creacion sublime para toda una epoca.Esto es perfecto.
Todo lo que ud toca lo hace arte!!!!
Giulini, che grande direttore, molto underrated :)
I love this piece... I'm performing it with an excellent 14-year-old soloist tomorrow.
MAESTRO DE MAESTROS, SIMPLEMENTE ROSTROPOVICH ES EL MEJOR ENTRE LOS MEJORES, QUE EN PAZ DESCANCE
Stunningly brilliant. One of my all time favourites. A magnificent start which builds over the next two movements.
j'adore Dvorak. thank you for your video.
Marvelous!!! Just fantastic!

Most important thing is not his country. But that he ever lived and had the chance to do so much for the Cello.
Beautiful melodies. I'm taking cello lessons soon. CAn't wait to begin. :D
ótima gravação
...wow. I'm speechless. This piece is awesome!! I have to play 1:03-1:35 for my orchestra auditions.
