  • We went to visit Kate at ‪@thelasthomelyhouse‬ after walking the Hadrian wall this spring. It was a lot of fun to visit a fellow UA-camr and share experiences. It was also super interesting to have an up close look at her beautifully organized workspace.
We talk of course a lot about both knitting and hexagons, and Kate shows us how to make hexagons using her machine. At the end of the episode we have fun knitting demonstration while we talk about future plans for more content.

Kate, thank you, thank you thank you for having Arne and Carlos show you the purl stitch!!! I’ve been trying to figure it out for years and my brain just couldn’t grasp it! And now I get it!! I think it’s brilliant..

When I was learning to knit a couple of years ago, I struggled so hard with purling. I nearly gave up until I found your UA-cam videos. Your videos on tension and purling was a complete game changer for me. The Norwegian purl was the most natural thing in the world to me. I would not be a knitter today had I not found you guys! Thank you so much for your videos!

I really enjoyed watching this episode. I have to give you a laugh. I learned to knit from my mom as a preteen. I let that pass as I got married, went to college, got a job. I tried to pick it up again during Covid shut down. I can cast on, but when I went to purl I guessed how to do it. I ended up taking all the stitches off instead. So I wasn't getting that right. Mom has dementia so I didn't try to ask her. Now I have seen Kate do her way (which looked like how Mom did) and the Norwegian way. Thank you so much. ❤🤗

Her name is Lola and I love her to the moon and back. Btw, I also knit some so I first found you two through knitting. I always enjoy watching you, love your work, your yarns. So lovely to watch you darlings together. I am Norwegian and I always put the yarn in from for the purl stitches and then to the back for the knit stitches. So much easier? I honestly thought everyone did it like that 😅 very interesting to see other ways. Think I must have learned that from my mum, who was also an arts and crafts teacher, when I was five or so. I guess the most important is to do it a way we enjoy! ❤️

    Great episode!
On the pearl-stitch class, I knit like Kate. The Norwegian Purl clicked for me by thinking of it, like a crochet stitch.
The Norwegian Knit stitch is also like the first part of a single-crochet stretch, without the hook.
As for the tendinitis in my hands, I’ve found that rubbing pure-Caster Oil in my hands at night along with taking turmeric and bromelain daily has been super, super helpful.

Love this! I so enjoyed seeing 2 of my favorite knit-bloggers together and having jolly times! I learned The Norwegian Knitting Way from Arne, also. Once the purl is mastered, it's golden. I'm with Kate, guys, over the "complicated" purl knitting! I've always used the good old wrap around the fingers of the right hand method and found it faster than any other. But then I'm someone who crochets the same way because it's SO speedy, using the index finger to flick the wool over the hook. Comes out exactly the same and I do enjoy it, probably also because it doesn't take ages. As you can probably tell, a fairly impatient crafter here who also uses iron on interfacing cut into hexagons instead of paper piecing because I can't be fagged to take out all those papers - also holds up better when washing the quilt, I find. But I digress! SO glad you visited Kate, three enthusiasts together, absolutely loved it ♥♥♥

I'm totally with Kate 100% on making that pearl stitch it was so fluid and so beautiful to watch and the other way that it was done with arna and Carlos just made my brain fall on the floor why go through all of that just to get a pearl stitch I mean really.....😅. It's such a joy to watch you guys on your channels and Kate that current quilt you're making just absolutely makes my eyes bug out of my head it is so stunning with those little pieces and then the way you put them together just like you do the curtains on your window and your your other little cushions and things you have such a magnificent grasp of color and design and flow... And Anna I love yours I do love it I'm proud of you I knew you could you could do it in you sit and think things through and laying down by your quilt to measure it was absolutely genius hahaha. Here in Brazil most people knit the Portuguese way: the yarn goes around the neck or hangs from a special pin in the chest area and the left thumb makes all the work. Portuguese purl stitch is a lot easier than knit stitch. Portuguese knitters make socks and do complex stitches and colorwork all from the purl side. When you turn the sock out, the right side is perfect.

I totally agree with Kate re: the purl stitch. The Norwegian cha cha cha is just one cha when done Kate's way. In the space of a row, the extra movement gets to be quite a lot. I do believe everyone needs to do it the way that works for them, and I know many people struggle with the standard purl. I happen to find the standard easy and quite a bit faster. It only bothers me when people insist how much better Norwegian purl is. It's only better if you're not comfortable with the standard version IMO.

So much fun to watch and enjoy!! Now I know why many complain about doing a purl stitch, purling with so many steps seems very odd. I knit and purl like Kate, it’s the way my mom taught me. Did Kate mention she doesn’t want to teach Agnes the way she, Kate, knits? What a shame! Kate knits like her mother did, who probably was taught by her mother, etc. She should have Agnes carry on the family knit tradition.

This is fantastic. I learned to do the Norwegian way from Arne. It’s so much more relaxing for me.
