Every day there are attempts to hack into your email, social media and other online accounts. Are there any benefits to these advanced protection programs offered by the likes of Google, Apple, Facebook and Proton? In this video, Josh explains each of the programs, which platforms are NOT secured (we're looking at you Twitter, LinkedIn and UA-cam!) and offers his thoughts on whether or not the average person should enroll in these advanced account protection programs.

No , Not enabled
no downside just few extra seconds of hassle which can be ignored
i did not enable enhanced security like apple because i am afraid to take that responsibility
I have & use Yubikeys, 2 of 'em, one is backup which locks down Bitwarden, my password manager, Yahoo, Google, & GoDaddy. - I wish Financial Institution like banks & Stock Brokerage companies & those Medical websites that contain personal medical information allowed Yubikeys.
I'm always amazed at how many companies, including medical providers, investment firms, insurance, etc., that have no provision for 2FA apps and instead insist upon sending everything to your phone via text message.
Yea, it's a shame really.
Also, very few banks allow you to have a PIN number longer than 4 digits
Although I haven't used any "Advanced" protection programs, I believe that the best protection program is how far you're willing to go to protect yourself.
Using MFA, using a password manager (not writing things down and possibly loosing it). Checking the devices logged into your account and removing old ones, etc.
I often think "if it's very easy for me, it may be even easier for a hacker."
Heck, I'm still on the fence on passkeys 😅
This is definitely a good step. It seems like you're doing everything you can on your end.
The thing about Advanced Protection Programs is that they strengthen the account security on the company's end - the part that you don't have much control over. Which is a good thing as well.
Hello Josh , new subscriber and love your videos.!
Great video. Keep up the good work.
Thanks so much, Doug 👍🏻
Hi, greate video, very useful :) I just wander because I couldn't find anywhere information about how google is handling data that normally are used for personalized ads when advanced data protection program is turn on, dose anything change or in that aspect account stay the same?
great video Josh! People needed to learn this!
Btw - you look in great shape, have you been working out?
I've been focusing on my health this year as I've turned 40. So yes. Thanks for noticing :)
What about ESET, NORTON, AVAST, etc. Do even need these for a complete security solution for Windows?
thank you !!
My pleasure!
Thanks bud. 😎
No problem 👍
7:48 either Twitter or Twitch I forget which one, required me to pick SMS first then stronger options.... while other services just let me skip to stronger options.
Yea, that's ridiculous.
Thanks Josh. From what I understand, the one thing that solves a bunch of security fears is a security key. But i confess I dread the price (especially w/ 2 security keys). With that said, perhaps it prevents the need of paid password managers and paid app upgrades.
Have you seen the Yubikey Security Key series? They don't have NFC, but they're much cheaper.
@@AllThingsSecured I’ll definitely look into it, thank you
I hope you read my message, question my neighbors keep hacking my phone I downloaded Certo it says my phone is good, however my phone keeps getting super hot indicating it still hacked ? Is there other ways to hack a phone other than malware???
I would like to see Financial Institutions like banks & brokerage accounts allow Me & other account holders to use Yubikey as a 2FA. Only Bank of America & Vanguard allow Yubikey 2FA.
Yea, bank adoption of 2FA keys has been slow, but it's coming.
Proton Sentinel isn't available to their lowest tier of paid support. I was excited for 30 seconds there. I'll check it out when I upgrade my account. Hoping for discounts near the holidays to really go premium
Sorry to get you unnecessarily exited there, Joey!
Any netlimiter 4 alternative
I'm not sure what the effort is when a password manager can enter credentials and a Yubikey only needs a touch.
You need to find and use the Yubikey that may not be at around you.
I agree, but when you're used to just being "automatically" logged in to various services, sometimes people get annoyed when they have to sign in *every time* they want to use a service.
@@wazzzzzzzzzzegIf that's too much, use a TOTP which the password manager will fill in for you. Better than nothing. Anyway, to each their own. We have to use it for work, so I'm used to it.
My password Manager, BitWarden, allows Yubikeys to be used for 2FA.
Do you know how to prevent hackers from hacking your security camaras and car???
Hello! I have a question: Is it a good idea to setup 2FAs in addition to at least 2 security keys? (like TOTPs & Device Prompts)
If you already have 2 keys set up, adding anything else negates the added security of using a key.
@@AllThingsSecured thanks boss! keep up the good work
Hey Josh gonna go a bit off the topic of this video because i am curious and i have commented on some of your other videos about this, with you being someone who values privacy so much does it ever bother you that things like 1password are part of the five eyes alliance or do you trust them enough to not worry about that type of thing ?
Personally, since 1Password doesn't have my private encryption keys, I'm not that worried about any 5-eyes anything. The government can request what they want to, but the encryption still exists. If the government can break that encryption, it wouldn't matter whether it's 5-eyes or not.
@@AllThingsSecuredthanks for the answer it was something as i watched your channel was wondering about :)
I like Protons software suites alot. Very worth the money. Highly recommend.
I absolutely agree.
Last time I check the reason someone will reverse the apple encryption will be because of some lost of functionality. Not sure if that has change recently.
Yea, that would be the only reason. Personally, I haven't run into anything that was that bad.
Key is the best.
I wish Spotify had 2FA
Hello, I am about to buy the yubico keys. In my country they are stealing cell phones and then they enter their bank accounts and take out all the money, violating security codes. Can the Yubico key protect me???
If you're worried about a stolen cell phone, then a key isn't going to help as much as just having a very strong mobile PIN code (perhaps alphanumeric)
0:05 Someone's been trying go get into specifically my minecraft account linked to one of my emails
There was like 4 attemps which is really weird I need to change passwords and maybe even delete accounts.
Maybe so. Hope you get it figured out.
Does advanced protection on my Google account mean that only a security key can unlock & sign into it?
It means you have to have the security key set up and used for any new devices. In my experience you don't have to use the 2FA key every time you log in.
I love using Microsoft products but it drives me nuts that they don’t have an authentication option using a 2FA security key
Many Microsoft products do (at least the enterprise options), but for some reason LinkedIn does not.
Sorry but LinkedIn does allow MFA secure login. I have it setup on my profile using Microsoft Authenticator. Also Google uses the UA-cam App to verify you as does UA-cam and this can be actives also. Can UA-cams be better yes, but it is there. However saying the LinkedIn doesn’t have MFA support is completely wrong.
I never said that LinkedIn doesn't allow for MFA. I said they don't allow for 2FA security keys (which is better than Microsoft Authenticator or SMS text which they do allow for). That's an important distinction.
And UA-cam using their app to verify you is not strong security. The sheer number of high-profile UA-cam channels that have been hacked in the past 6 months is a testament to how bad their security is.
No downside-Got a suggestion for you. How about addressing the issue where you change address & phone then try to update them on an account that uses 2FA. They are unable to reset your phone number if you dont have access to the old one for verification (which is why you contacted them in the first place). Tney also cant reset your password, if you need that for any reason, when you have 2FA in many cases. You cant enter 2FA without the password and you cant teset the password if tou need it reset. If you can address the pitfalls of 2FA that would be excellent. Yes having a 2FA key would be a good solution i think but you have to set it up Before such a disaster.
That's one of many reasons why I don't think that 2FA based on a phone number is any good. Move away from that as quickly as possible!
@@Crying-Croc Financial Institutions have so far resisted hardware keys as a method required for 2FA. Shame on 'em.
Brother please tell me how to recover authenticator account on authenticator app
Vitalik Buterin, the ethereum guy just got his Twitter account taken over by a SIM swap, 2FA be damned ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I really wish my credit unions would allow security keys. My yubikeys protect accounts that aren’t that valuable to me but my money sure is.
At least the started supporting Authy but I’m always having timeout issues, even just setting it up with a QR code is a pain when the camera is in the device you are trying to setup. Am I missing something on an iPhone? Is there a way the be presented a QR code on a website and have the phone scan it in?
I'm with you on the frustration with banks.
As for QR codes, did you know that you can input it manually without using your camera? Here's how: ua-cam.com/video/47SzzwIAzNc/v-deo.html
It’s pretty easy to tell who monetarily benefits from our data and who doesn’t. I.e. Apple and Proton do not, and Facebook and Google do.
What are you saying are the tell-tale signs?
@@AllThingsSecured Apple and Proton care about encryption and their revenue model is based on subscriptions.
Facebook and Google did nothing with encryption, their “super dooper protection modes” are kind of a joke really, and their revenue models are based on selling our data, so why would they encrypt it?
Doesn't Google Advanced Protection disable installing APKs from any other source than Play Store on Android? That's a major downside.
Hmm...that may be the case, although I've never come across that. Thanks for the feedback.
Fr💀
@@AllThingsSecured you never came across that because you never installed a apk💀
LinkedIn has TOTP 2FA...
They do, but that's not the same as support for FIDO 2FA security keys.
I have Facebook protect lol. I guess my reach is relatively large because I run a meme page with a decent number of followers.
Ha! Yea, their idea of who needs Facebook Protect is pretty funny.
