Just wait until you discover that outside of his solo stuff, he's part of 2 amazing groups: SHINee and SuperM. SHINee recently released 2 MVs Atlantis and Don't Call Me that you should check out. If you want a crazy Marvel style MV, check out SuperM's debut song MV "Jopping". SuperM songs tend to have more English as well since they were kinda formed for the American market.
I discovered TAEMIN back in November and am still trying to reach the bottom of that rabbit hole! There is just so much good music between his solo career and his work with SHINee. I haven’t even gotten to SuperM yet!
He was called tone deaf when he first started training cuz he absolutely had no voice....he went through a lot of hardships and this amazing voice is an artwork by himself...TAEMIN is smone who deserves more and he has high standard! Go deep into him you WON'T be disappointed....
The reason the MVs are so cinematic and high budget is because the K-Pop idols are signed, not to record labels, but to entertainment companies. In other words, these companies have their own videographers, producers, etc. This also means that it is not uncommon for K-Pop idols to be actors as well, quite a few of them have starred in shows. There's actually a drama going on right now called Imitation that half of the group ATEEZ is a part of, as well as a soloist and some members of SF9, Boys Republic, T-ara, U-KISS, and IOI. The idols also have to go through extensive training programs to learn choreography, vocals/rap, and usually some acting and English classes as well.
I just want to point out that Taemin T-poses in every music video. It’s sort of become a meme. Also please listen to Scream by Dreamcatcher. They’re a super interesting kpop group who are heavily influenced by rock and metal.
If you want to ride the Taemin wave, I recommend Idea and Want. I always recommend DPR! DPR Ian just had his album and four mvs out this year, the song Nerves is my favorite. Fun fact about the production! SM entertainment, the company Taemin is a part of, likes to outsource their producers, songwriters, and choreographers. the song has a bit of the 80's electronic sound to it, thats why it sounds like it's feels like you're being transported back to another era. I grew up in the 80's so when i first heard this song I told my girls that it sound like an 80's dance track. This is one of my favorite songs from Taemin. maybe you should watch IDEA next, that one will surprise you.
Thank you so much for being willing to explore Taemin's very unorthodox Kpop music. That's why we love him so much. He doesn't follow trends; he creates them, just like his group, SHINee. Since "IDEA" is the 2nd part and sister song to "Criminal", I think I would suggest you react to that next. I've recently discovered that "Advice" has 3 meanings. One of which is that it is the epilogue to the "Criminal" and "IDEA" story as well as Taemin's new beginning as the new ego. The eye patch I think is an homage to his SHINee hyung, Key, who wore an eye patch when they performed "Odd Eye" and one of their other songs. Not sure though. Could be he wanted to look like a pirate too. You just never know with Taemin. However, before you get further into his music, there are three things to remember when reading his lyrics and watching his MVs: 1) Taemin usually has dual (or triple, as in "Advice") meanings for his lyrics: A) the surface meaning - take them as you read them and be happy; or B) delve more deeply to reveal the secondary richer meaning; or C) as in the case with "Advice" how it correlates with SM Entertainment's Universe Theory. 2) Taemin is a Christian (devout Catholic) so there is also usually a lot of religious imagery, symbolism, metaphors, and allusions within his lyrics and MVs. 3) Taemin is DEEP, very intellectual, and insanely detail-oriented. Much of what we know about the lyrics come from listening to him give hints on interviews and IG LIVEs. The rest is due to our (fans) research. "Criminal" is the title track for Act 1 of his two-part "Never Gonna Dance Again" (NGDA) album. The concept for this song is Stockholm Syndrome. However, Taemin is both the "criminal" and the victim in his own mind: two different egos fighting for supremacy in search of the perfect idea of Taemin. It's a love/hate relationship where the criminal ego keeps the new ego captive, but the new ego isn't sure it want's to break free. It's comfortable and safe where he is. Right now he's leashed by his old persona ("I'm on a leash called you" - meaning himself) The process of changing your persona, the image that has been with you since the beginning -- his debut at 14 YO -- into a whole new identity is painful but necessary to achieve what he wants, which is to become an even better performer and artist. All the imagery in this MV has meaning, especially when you see the crows flapping around him the first time you see him wearing a plastic bag over his head (desperate struggle/suffocating death). The second time you see the bag over his head there are butterflies fluttering around him instead (rebirth/resurrection/metamorphosis). However, the new ego is itching to burst free, so Taemin says, "Destroy me more", meaning bring it on. I believe this MV/song is linked to "Famous" (there is a Japanese MV for this song), also on Act I. The short explanation being "....being "Famous" may be "fabulous" but it's "dangerous" and creates a lot of drama, and Taemin wants "no drama". The requirements of fame (perfection always; flawless in appearance; always on top) are expensive (in personal terms) and can create the danger of over-inflating the ego and losing your true self to greed and arrogance. Taemin is the antithesis of arrogance. Most humble guy you would ever meet. "IDEA" is the title track of Act 2 of NGDA Album and the continuation of Act 1. It depicts the climactic battle between the two egos in Taemin's mind and the eventual rebirth/resurrection of Taemin with a new Ego. The concept for this song/album is....wait for it....Plato's philosophical Theory of Forms, hence the Greek pronunciation of the word "Idea" and "Messiah" within the song. Remember, I told you Taemin was deep! Another extreme example of this type of performance duality is his MV for "Want". That one, on the surface, seems to be all about tempting his fans or a woman. However, it's actually a retelling of Genesis 3 with a hint of the salvation message at the very end. Again, it's quite deep for those who know what to look for and want to take the time to find it. So, now that we've gotten the music out of the way, let me introduce you to Taemin (I apologize for the length ahead of time): SHINee (home original group) and Taemin are both legends in the Kpop world. In fact, they have done more to make Kpop what it is today than most other groups. They are so respected that you will most likely never hear other artists or members of the industry say anything negative about them. Off-stage, Taemin is the most adorable, humble marshmallow of a man you will ever find. Everyone in Kpop loves him. The duality is striking. As Taeyong of NCT & SuperM said, he was afraid to meet Taemin at first, but then realized he was very gentle, but "...a bit immoral" LOLOLOL! Taemin was just 14 and the main dancer when SHINee, a 2nd. gen., group, debuted in 2008. As a totally self-taught dancer, he wasn't restricted by one genre or technique that was drilled into his body. In fact, SM quickly found out that Taemin could pull off any dance style rather quickly (except for ballet...lol.) and he's a master at popping and locking. Unfortunately, due to immature vocal cords, he couldn't sing. In fact, his nickname was "Tone-Deaf". However, this didn't stop the tenacious Taemin. His drive and will to succeed persevered and with the help of his entire group, especially Jonghyun (best Kpop vocalist ever IMHO) and Onew, Taemin conquered and became a very unique vocalist with quite a range. In fact, he was so good that SM chose him to be their first-ever male soloist from an active boy group. With his first solo album, Taemin became the "ACE" of SM Ent., as dubbed by then CEO, Lee Soo Man. That moniker has stuck ever since. Taemin now holds the record as the only Kpop artist to have debuted four different times in three different generations of Kpop: 2nd, 3rd, & 4th. generations. The last was when he debuted with SuperM in 2019. In fact, Taemin was the first to be approached for the project by Lee Soo Man. As Taemin has a lot of control & input over all aspects of producing his solo/SHINee music, he now has pretty much dipped his fingers into revising the choreographies, costuming, and other elements of SuperM. Therefore, he commands the best in backup dancers, producers, directors, etc, making his MVs and performances works of art conceived from his own mind. "The Artist: Taemin": would be an excellent mini-doc by Walawala to watch to understand the impact Taemin has had on the industry. Now with 13 years of experience under his belt, Taemin is the quintessential artist. Having been raised with SHINee's penchant for always trying something new and different, Taemin slides seamlessly in and through genres of music, even creating his own genre affectionately known as TPop (Taemin Pop). Taemin is never afraid to bend the rules and smash the normal cultural and social boundaries of Korea. He has no fear. Each comeback promises a new sound that has not yet been explored by the industry. Taemin is one of the most popular solo artists, as well as the youngest member of the legendary Kpop group SHINee. He debuted as a solo artist in 2014 and "Criminal" is part of his 3rd Korean solo album called Never Gonna Dance Again. It is part of a trilogy which started with his prologue "2 Kids," and continued with "Criminal" which is part of Act 1 of the album. And it was followed up by "Idea" which is part of Act 2 of the album and it brings the whole concept full circle. As Taemin said in an interview: "The two acts put together tell a story. '2 Kids’ is about growing pains and depicts the story prior to the story in the album. You can think of '2 Kids' as a teaser before the movie called 'Never Gonna Dance Again.' Act 1 shows a new side of me. I think it’ll be something you’ve never seen in K-pop before. And Act 2 is the end-all-be-all. It’s the ultimate level of intensity. Never Gonna Dance Again’ was originally the name of the concept. Because it doesn’t make sense for me to stop dancing. But I wanted to give a sense of rebellion with the irony of the title.” And just so you know, Taemin is not the criminal in the song. He is being held captive by the criminal who is the girl he is singing about (i.e. the pressure he feels under as a Kpop idol). The song is about living in a toxic relationship and being brainwashed by the girl to the point where you are suffering from stockholm syndrome and you have now fallen in love with the person (or thing -- i.e. his career) who is inflicting all the pain and suffering on him. Even though you are being abused by that person (possibly a metaphor for the pressure he is creating for himself with the need to always be the best in everything he does) you can't help but love them and allow them to continue to hurt you, etc. This albums whole concept is a metaphor for his life and career. With every release from this album, the concept was designed to be darker then the last. In "2 Kids" he was emotionally and physically beating himself up with regrets and in "Criminal" he was living in a toxic relationship. And "Idea" takes the theme one step further, and says that even though it was my idea and my plan to live this life, nothing comes without a price, and because of that need for perfection, any chance of being average or living a regular life is pretty much dead. Taemin has sacrificed everything to become the magnificent and unique performer and person that we know him as today. But there really is no one that pushes him or holds him to a higher standard then himself. Taemin has said that he really has never taken a true vacation since he was a trainee -- he started with SM Entertainment when he was around 11 years old -- and he doesn't know what to do if he isn't constantly working and training. The thing that he hates the most is when people assume he has had it easy because he is part of a big and powerful company and he is so naturally talented. As he has said, there has never been anything that has come easy to him and he has only gotten to where he is today because he has worked hard to accomplish everything. He is constantly pushing himself to become the best of the best in everything he does. If you are impressed with Taemin's dancing, just wait until you see his dance practice video for "Criminal." You will be even more blown away. As I said, Taemin is on a whole other level. Taemin's choreography is very much influenced by him. Although he has input in almost everything he does, he has choreographers that come up with the choreography for most of his dances and he then infuses it with his own ideas and style and makes it uniquely his. The way Taemin dances is just the way he moves. His movements are effortless. If you watch Taemin dance more, you will see that no matter who choreographs the dance, it will always be very Taemin-like. Many choreographers who have worked with him over the years have said that, with Taemin you can't help but allow him to move in whatever way his body takes him. Taemin is art in every sense of the word. :D Taemin's style of dance can't be defined. After Criminal I'd like to recommend "Idea" coz it's the sister song for Criminal. If you hv time to read the lyrics of both songs, they're like Taemin's journey to find his true identity, his battle to find the ideal self of his. After Idea, you can dive to "Want" - which practically his album that was released before Criminal. "Move" is his iconic song, the one that cemented his status as a unique legendary male singer bcoz with this song he breaks the stereotype of how ppl should look based on their genders. He blurs the line, playing with his looks and choreography, makes it in such a way that defies gender. "Danger" is his solo debut song. Just as iconic with his other songs. There are many other fantastic songs with just as spectacular MVs. You've seen two of his latest MVs and basically they're his standard, all of his MVs are just fabulous. Then we'll see if you're somehow interested to check on his live performances in concerts and such. Taemin is incredible in MVs, but on stages? In live concerts? He's a beast. I definitely agree with you that Criminal has the club music and eighties/nineties vibe. Taemin loves experimenting with the sound, if you want to hear more of this kind of smooth, seductive Taemin I would check out Want - he described the genre as “space disco” and everyone back then was asking what kind of genre was that! Also Move is an ultimate seductive track, it’s probably his most iconic song till now. Taemin is sometimes compared to The Weekend (especially with songs like Want and Criminal) and I think there is something correct in this reference. He's a part of SHINee a 5 member boyband . They are known for their live performance and tremendous discography. You can check out their albums. I would recommend Sherlock , View, Everybody and the recent ones don't call me and Atlantis. I would suggest you to checkout their live performances like Stranger, Evil, Hitchicking, Excuse me miss. And if you have time just watch the entire SHINee world 4 concert. You'll not regret. It's like the queen of all concerts with some of their best tracks

TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS: 1. Taemin's #1 biggest influence that got him into dancing and wanting to become a singer in the first place is MJ and he's thus gone on to become titled as "K-Pop's Michael Jackson" with even NBC's Today Show calling him that too in their 2017 coverage of the genre 2. Like I mentioned in my comment in your 'Advice' reaction, "K-Pop" is a bit of a general umbrella term because of how dynamically diverse everything within it sounds so it's a bit hard to properly define things and thus people just meme that "the genre is TAEMIN/T-Pop" 3. The concept of 'Criminal' is Stockholm Syndrome in a captive not being able to help still being magnetically attracted to their captor. So the all the eyepatches and stuff sort of represent a kind of like blindness in not seeing the whole situation clearly I think. And then all that aside, it's just Taemin further proving that he's the all-time best dancer in the K-Pop industry by performing an entire difficult choreography with only 50% of his vision throughout it (in combination with his hands being tied too for the first 30% of the song) 4. Majority of his stans including myself think that 'Criminal' is actually his absolute best song and performance to date but surprisingly casuals and nonfans think 'Advice' is his best work so far and that's like one of the most different songs he's done stylistically compared to his usual style since that one was more hiphop/trap based which I guess is indeed more suited to the general public's taste over more artsy stuff like 'Criminal' and everything else Thank you again for checking this out and glad you enjoyed it! Taemin is one of the best dancers on the scene in k-pop right now. Like the other dancers on the top tier, he's got his own style. You can clearly see the MJ influences, but he makes it his own. Jimin from BTS is personally my favorite dancer, because I'm partial to Jimin's contemporary style, but Taemin is high on my list of favs. If you like group choreo, I'd recommend checking out some of SHINee to see Taemin alongside his groupmates. And of course I'd recommend checking out BTS. BTS has a gigantic discography though and covers a lot of genres and styles, so I'm not sure which you might enjoy the most as a first timer. Since you enjoyed Taemin's Advice and Criminal, I think you'd enjoy BTS' Black Swan and DNA. And of course the song you'll be seeing on all the charts for the next couple weeks will be BTS' Butter that came out last night, so it'd be cool if you checked that out. What's your favorite genre of music and favorite style of dance? That might help tailor a good recommendation for you.
Definitely check out more of Taemin but SHINee as well! A lot of k-pop artists start out in groups/bands and sometimes they have solo debuts. Taemin was actually the first in his company to debut solo while still actively part of a group (SHINee) and is now called the standard for solo idols. Regardless, SHINee are all highly respected in the industry and for good reason. Start with Replay (released in 2008) and you'll instantly fall into the rabbit hole :)
As you have probably been told, but Taemin is part of SHINEE .... be sure to check them out! Their most current releases are: Don't Call Me CODE Heart Attack Atlantis They are known as the Princes of Kpop. They debuted in 2008 and are known for their harmonies, fashion, dancing, etc. They just returned from an approx. 2 year hiatus while the other 2 members (Min-ho, Onew, Key) completed their mandatory military service. Taemin is due to start his in June. He released lots of solo material while they were gone.

All of Taemin's vids have a different look. Some kinda tie into another but they all have a look that pushes the envelope and boundaries that the media and whatnot try to push on us. This man is legend an a try artist!
it's funny that you say the beats are the best, since a lot of kpop producers are actually western (for criminal: Lauren Aquilina, Chloe Latimer, Shae Jacobs, SCORE, MEGATONE. i think score&megatone are korean, but the rest are british. IDEA literally had the same producers as WAP working on it). it's just a different style and the audience values different types of beats (and you'll notice that kpop has a massive variety of genres in it once you dive deeper). taemin's company, SM entertainment, is especially known for their great music and video quality, i'd recommend checking out other groups from them (nct, red velvet, exo, shinee, etc.) to get a perspective. in kpop the entertainment company has a big role in putting together these projects, so if you dive in deeper you'll notice they all have their distinct styles. that being said taemin is such an artist himself and knows what he wants from his projects, so i do think everything he puts out just has a different feel. he is at the top of the industry for a reason.

To me it sounds a bit like an 80s song constructed with modern synths... so it feels old and new at the same time. I could be wrong 😂 I'm no music expert... just my humble 2 cents. Also, I agree, the music video, dance etc is what really takes it to the next level! Edit: just wanted to add that Advice does something similar. It grabs a piano in its classic sense and meshes it with hip-hop... or something hip-hop-ish. Makes a wild combo of two genres that couldn't be further apart.

A lot of videos got taken down because of Criminal. One notable occurrence was Super Junior Donghae's vlog. And he is an artist from the same company! He was taking his vlog in the backstage while Taemin was performing on stage so the sound wasn't even that clear...

The reason the MVs are so cinematic and high budget is because the K-Pop idols are signed, not to record labels, but to entertainment companies. In other words, these companies have their own videographers, producers, etc. This also means that it is not uncommon for K-Pop idols to be actors as well, quite a few of them have starred in shows. There's actually a drama going on right now called Imitation that half of the group ATEEZ is a part of, as well as a soloist and some members of SF9, Boys Republic, T-ara, U-KISS, and IOI. The idols also have to go through extensive training programs to learn choreography, vocals/rap, and usually some acting and English classes as well.

Thank you so much for being willing to explore Taemin's very unorthodox Kpop music. That's why we love him so much. He doesn't follow trends; he creates them, just like his group, SHINee. Since "IDEA" is the 2nd part and sister song to "Criminal", I think I would suggest you react to that next. I've recently discovered that "Advice" has 3 meanings. One of which is that it is the epilogue to the "Criminal" and "IDEA" story as well as Taemin's new beginning as the new ego. The eye patch I think is an homage to his SHINee hyung, Key, who wore an eye patch when they performed "Odd Eye" and one of their other songs. Not sure though. Could be he wanted to look like a pirate too. You just never know with Taemin.
However, before you get further into his music, there are three things to remember when reading his lyrics and watching his MVs:
1) Taemin usually has dual (or triple, as in "Advice") meanings for his lyrics: A) the surface meaning - take them as you read them and be happy; or B) delve more deeply to reveal the secondary richer meaning; or C) as in the case with "Advice" how it correlates with SM Entertainment's Universe Theory.
2) Taemin is a Christian (devout Catholic) so there is also usually a lot of religious imagery, symbolism, metaphors, and allusions within his lyrics and MVs.
3) Taemin is DEEP, very intellectual, and insanely detail-oriented. Much of what we know about the lyrics come from listening to him give hints on interviews and IG LIVEs. The rest is due to our (fans) research.
"Criminal" is the title track for Act 1 of his two-part "Never Gonna Dance Again" (NGDA) album. The concept for this song is Stockholm Syndrome. However, Taemin is both the "criminal" and the victim in his own mind: two different egos fighting for supremacy in search of the perfect idea of Taemin. It's a love/hate relationship where the criminal ego keeps the new ego captive, but the new ego isn't sure it want's to break free. It's comfortable and safe where he is. Right now he's leashed by his old persona ("I'm on a leash called you" - meaning himself) The process of changing your persona, the image that has been with you since the beginning -- his debut at 14 YO -- into a whole new identity is painful but necessary to achieve what he wants, which is to become an even better performer and artist. All the imagery in this MV has meaning, especially when you see the crows flapping around him the first time you see him wearing a plastic bag over his head (desperate struggle/suffocating death). The second time you see the bag over his head there are butterflies fluttering around him instead (rebirth/resurrection/metamorphosis).
However, the new ego is itching to burst free, so Taemin says, "Destroy me more", meaning bring it on.
I believe this MV/song is linked to "Famous" (there is a Japanese MV for this song), also on Act I. The short explanation being "....being "Famous" may be "fabulous" but it's "dangerous" and creates a lot of drama, and Taemin wants "no drama". The requirements of fame (perfection always; flawless in appearance; always on top) are expensive (in personal terms) and can create the danger of over-inflating the ego and losing your true self to greed and arrogance. Taemin is the antithesis of arrogance. Most humble guy you would ever meet.
"IDEA" is the title track of Act 2 of NGDA Album and the continuation of Act 1. It depicts the climactic battle between the two egos in Taemin's mind and the eventual rebirth/resurrection of Taemin with a new Ego. The concept for this song/album is....wait for it....Plato's philosophical Theory of Forms, hence the Greek pronunciation of the word "Idea" and "Messiah" within the song. Remember, I told you Taemin was deep!
Another extreme example of this type of performance duality is his MV for "Want". That one, on the surface, seems to be all about tempting his fans or a woman. However, it's actually a retelling of Genesis 3 with a hint of the salvation message at the very end. Again, it's quite deep for those who know what to look for and want to take the time to find it.
So, now that we've gotten the music out of the way, let me introduce you to Taemin (I apologize for the length ahead of time):
SHINee (home original group) and Taemin are both legends in the Kpop world. In fact, they have done more to make Kpop what it is today than most other groups. They are so respected that you will most likely never hear other artists or members of the industry say anything negative about them. Off-stage, Taemin is the most adorable, humble marshmallow of a man you will ever find. Everyone in Kpop loves him. The duality is striking. As Taeyong of NCT & SuperM said, he was afraid to meet Taemin at first, but then realized he was very gentle, but "...a bit immoral" LOLOLOL! Taemin was just 14 and the main dancer when SHINee, a 2nd. gen., group, debuted in 2008. As a totally self-taught dancer, he wasn't restricted by one genre or technique that was drilled into his body. In fact, SM quickly found out that Taemin could pull off any dance style rather quickly (except for ballet...lol.) and he's a master at popping and locking. Unfortunately, due to immature vocal cords, he couldn't sing. In fact, his nickname was "Tone-Deaf". However, this didn't stop the tenacious Taemin. His drive and will to succeed persevered and with the help of his entire group, especially Jonghyun (best Kpop vocalist ever IMHO) and Onew, Taemin conquered and became a very unique vocalist with quite a range. In fact, he was so good that SM chose him to be their first-ever male soloist from an active boy group.
With his first solo album, Taemin became the "ACE" of SM Ent., as dubbed by then CEO, Lee Soo Man. That moniker has stuck ever since. Taemin now holds the record as the only Kpop artist to have debuted four different times in three different generations of Kpop: 2nd, 3rd, & 4th. generations. The last was when he debuted with SuperM in 2019. In fact, Taemin was the first to be approached for the project by Lee Soo Man. As Taemin has a lot of control & input over all aspects of producing his solo/SHINee music, he now has pretty much dipped his fingers into revising the choreographies, costuming, and other elements of SuperM. Therefore, he commands the best in backup dancers, producers, directors, etc, making his MVs and performances works of art conceived from his own mind. "The Artist: Taemin": would be an excellent mini-doc by Walawala to watch to understand the impact Taemin has had on the industry.
Now with 13 years of experience under his belt, Taemin is the quintessential artist. Having been raised with SHINee's penchant for always trying something new and different, Taemin slides seamlessly in and through genres of music, even creating his own genre affectionately known as TPop (Taemin Pop). Taemin is never afraid to bend the rules and smash the normal cultural and social boundaries of Korea. He has no fear. Each comeback promises a new sound that has not yet been explored by the industry. Taemin is one of the most popular solo artists, as well as the youngest member of the legendary Kpop group SHINee. He debuted as a solo artist in 2014 and "Criminal" is part of his 3rd Korean solo album called Never Gonna Dance Again. It is part of a trilogy which started with his prologue "2 Kids," and continued with "Criminal" which is part of Act 1 of the album. And it was followed up by "Idea" which is part of Act 2 of the album and it brings the whole concept full circle.
As Taemin said in an interview: "The two acts put together tell a story. '2 Kids’ is about growing pains and depicts the story prior to the story in the album. You can think of '2 Kids' as a teaser before the movie called 'Never Gonna Dance Again.' Act 1 shows a new side of me. I think it’ll be something you’ve never seen in K-pop before. And Act 2 is the end-all-be-all. It’s the ultimate level of intensity. Never Gonna Dance Again’ was originally the name of the concept. Because it doesn’t make sense for me to stop dancing. But I wanted to give a sense of rebellion with the irony of the title.”
And just so you know, Taemin is not the criminal in the song. He is being held captive by the criminal who is the girl he is singing about (i.e. the pressure he feels under as a Kpop idol). The song is about living in a toxic relationship and being brainwashed by the girl to the point where you are suffering from stockholm syndrome and you have now fallen in love with the person (or thing -- i.e. his career) who is inflicting all the pain and suffering on him. Even though you are being abused by that person (possibly a metaphor for the pressure he is creating for himself with the need to always be the best in everything he does) you can't help but love them and allow them to continue to hurt you, etc.
This albums whole concept is a metaphor for his life and career. With every release from this album, the concept was designed to be darker then the last. In "2 Kids" he was emotionally and physically beating himself up with regrets and in "Criminal" he was living in a toxic relationship. And "Idea" takes the theme one step further, and says that even though it was my idea and my plan to live this life, nothing comes without a price, and because of that need for perfection, any chance of being average or living a regular life is pretty much dead. Taemin has sacrificed everything to become the magnificent and unique performer and person that we know him as today.
But there really is no one that pushes him or holds him to a higher standard then himself. Taemin has said that he really has never taken a true vacation since he was a trainee -- he started with SM Entertainment when he was around 11 years old -- and he doesn't know what to do if he isn't constantly working and training. The thing that he hates the most is when people assume he has had it easy because he is part of a big and powerful company and he is so naturally talented. As he has said, there has never been anything that has come easy to him and he has only gotten to where he is today because he has worked hard to accomplish everything. He is constantly pushing himself to become the best of the best in everything he does.
If you are impressed with Taemin's dancing, just wait until you see his dance practice video for "Criminal." You will be even more blown away. As I said, Taemin is on a whole other level.
Taemin's choreography is very much influenced by him. Although he has input in almost everything he does, he has choreographers that come up with the choreography for most of his dances and he then infuses it with his own ideas and style and makes it uniquely his. The way Taemin dances is just the way he moves. His movements are effortless. If you watch Taemin dance more, you will see that no matter who choreographs the dance, it will always be very Taemin-like. Many choreographers who have worked with him over the years have said that, with Taemin you can't help but allow him to move in whatever way his body takes him. Taemin is art in every sense of the word. :D
Taemin's style of dance can't be defined. As he has said, he has worked his entire career to create a style of dance that is unlike anything in the Kpop industry. And I would argue that that now extends to the entire industry of dance. Taemin started out as a self-taught popper and locker without any dance training, and, even then, as a trainee it was clear his skills as a dancer went far beyond the average dancer. Over the years, as you see with "Criminal," he has infused those popping and locking skills into his now more contemporary style of dance. But, when it comes to dancing, he can do it all and there is no one better at it than him.
Taemin is just one of those performers that leaves you speechless every time he steps on stage. He was born to be a performer and that is one of the reasons why he has become known as the Korean Michael Jackson. That is also why, as one of the top two dancers in the industry, he was made a member of SuperM. (Kai from EXO -- Taemin's best friend since they were trainees, who is also under SM Entertainment, as well as a member of SuperM -- is the other top dancer.) Taemin is an Idol of Idols and a legend of legends.
And the title of the industry's BEST dancer isn't just a fan's opinion but it's a widely agreed upon title bestowed on both Taemin and Kai by their peers and the industry as a whole. There is literally no one considered better than them.
Taemin's talents are one reason why SHINee are one of the top groups in the industry and why they have such legendary status. After Idea, you can dive to "Want" - which practically his album that was released before Criminal. "Move" is his iconic song, the one that cemented his status as a unique legendary male singer bcoz with this song he breaks the stereotype of how ppl should look based on their genders. He blurs the line, playing with his looks and choreography, makes it in such a way that defies gender. "Danger" is his solo debut song. Just as iconic with his other songs.
There are many other fantastic songs with just as spectacular MVs. You've seen two of his latest MVs and basically they're his standard, all of his MVs are just fabulous. Then we'll see if you're somehow interested to check on his live performances in concerts and such. Taemin is incredible in MVs, but on stages? In live concerts? He's a beast. There's a reason why in Korea he's dubbed as king of live performances.

I definitely agree with you that Criminal has the club music and eighties/nineties vibe. Taemin loves experimenting with the sound, if you want to hear more of this kind of smooth, seductive Taemin I would check out Want - he described the genre as “space disco” and everyone back then was asking what kind of genre was that! Also Move is an ultimate seductive track, it’s probably his most iconic song till now. Taemin is sometimes compared to The Weekend (especially with songs like Want and Criminal) and I think there is something correct in this reference.

TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS:
1. Taemin's #1 biggest influence that got him into dancing and wanting to become a singer in the first place is MJ and he's thus gone on to become titled as "K-Pop's Michael Jackson" with even NBC's Today Show calling him that too in their 2017 coverage of the genre
2. Like I mentioned in my comment in your 'Advice' reaction, "K-Pop" is a bit of a general umbrella term because of how dynamically diverse everything within it sounds so it's a bit hard to properly define things and thus people just meme that "the genre is TAEMIN/T-Pop"
3. The concept of 'Criminal' is Stockholm Syndrome in a captive not being able to help still being magnetically attracted to their captor. So the all the eyepatches and stuff sort of represent a kind of like blindness in not seeing the whole situation clearly I think. And then all that aside, it's just Taemin further proving that he's the all-time best dancer in the K-Pop industry by performing an entire difficult choreography with only 50% of his vision throughout it (in combination with his hands being tied too for the first 30% of the song)
4. Majority of his stans including myself think that 'Criminal' is actually his absolute best song and performance to date but surprisingly casuals and nonfans think 'Advice' is his best work so far and that's like one of the most different songs he's done stylistically compared to his usual style since that one was more hiphop/trap based which I guess is indeed more suited to the general public's taste over more artsy stuff like 'Criminal' and everything else

Taemin is one of the best dancers on the scene in k-pop right now. Like the other dancers on the top tier, he's got his own style. You can clearly see the MJ influences, but he makes it his own. Jimin from BTS is personally my favorite dancer, because I'm partial to Jimin's contemporary style, but Taemin is high on my list of favs. If you like group choreo, I'd recommend checking out some of SHINee to see Taemin alongside his groupmates. And of course I'd recommend checking out BTS. BTS has a gigantic discography though and covers a lot of genres and styles, so I'm not sure which you might enjoy the most as a first timer. Since you enjoyed Taemin's Advice and Criminal, I think you'd enjoy BTS' Black Swan and DNA. And of course the song you'll be seeing on all the charts for the next couple weeks will be BTS' Butter that came out last night, so it'd be cool if you checked that out. What's your favorite genre of music and favorite style of dance? That might help tailor a good recommendation for you.

Taemin was actually the first in his company to debut solo while still actively part of a group (SHINee) and is now called the standard for solo idols. @3:20 the "na na na na na na na na" was actually interpolated from Kylie Minogue's 'Can't Get You Out of My Head' which was from 12 years ago. I think that's where the nostalgic pop feel comes from.

All of Taemin's vids have a different look. Some kinda tie into another but they all have a look that pushes the envelope and boundaries that the media and whatnot try to push on us. This man is legend an a try artist!
it's funny that you say the beats are the best, since a lot of kpop producers are actually western (for criminal: Lauren Aquilina, Chloe Latimer, Shae Jacobs, SCORE, MEGATONE. i think score&megatone are korean, but the rest are british. IDEA literally had the same producers as WAP working on it). it's just a different style and the audience values different types of beats (and you'll notice that kpop has a massive variety of genres in it once you dive deeper). taemin's company, SM entertainment, is especially known for their great music and video quality, i'd recommend checking out other groups from them (nct, red velvet, exo, shinee, etc.) to get a perspective. in kpop the entertainment company has a big role in putting together these projects, so if you dive in deeper you'll notice they all have their distinct styles. that being said taemin is such an artist himself and knows what he wants from his projects, so i do think everything he puts out just has a different feel. he is at the top of the industry for a reason.

To me it sounds a bit like an 80s song constructed with modern synths... so it feels old and new at the same time. I could be wrong 😂 I'm no music expert... just my humble 2 cents.
Also, I agree, the music video, dance etc is what really takes it to the next level!
Edit: just wanted to add that Advice does something similar. It grabs a piano in its classic sense and meshes it with hip-hop... or something hip-hop-ish. Makes a wild combo of two genres that couldn't be further apart.

There has been a few. Other reactors were blocked by SM for Taemin mv, but it’s so random and very few.
A lot of videos got taken down because of Criminal. One notable occurrence was Super Junior Donghae's vlog. And he is an artist from the same company! He was taking his vlog in the backstage while Taemin was performing on stage so the sound wasn't even that clear...
