Why I'm going BACK to Airport Extreme (D-Link Makes Garbage!)

  • What's up gang!?! I bought a Dlink router just over a year ago and it was just a miserable experience from the get go. Alas, it seemed like it had finally failed for forever and a Dlink didn't want to talk to me about it at all.
Can you imagine selling a product and only offering support to people who bought theirs within three months, then nothing to the rest? Shocking stuff! Haha. I am cheesed, here is my complaint. Thanks for listening to me whine!

Your experience is why I believe Apple made a mistake in dropping network devices. The Airport Extreme wasn't inexpensive making it difficult to continue when cheap (cost and operability) WiFi routers flooded the market. Apple was probably losing money on the Airport but everyone who's used one knows how easy it is to configure and use. As we all know, they just work! I've seen other youtube channels pushing Apple to get back into the router business. They kind of are when you look at some of their Home products like the HomePod and AppleTV. Apple has the beginning of a mesh system, only needing one device that could act as the main router (the one connected to the fiber/cable/satellite/not-DSL modem). If done properly, this base station router could be the size of an AppleTV, or built into an AppleTV, using HomePods as nodes, then figure out a way to add the necessary mesh hardware into laptops and desktops, further extending the network. I like wired networks for their speed but addressing mobile devices means you need WiFi. What would it take for Apple to alter the WiFi transceiver in an iMac to provide mesh services? Just software? The iMac's WiFi can transmit and receive at the same time it uses its hardwired ethernet connection. Maybe Apple is already designing a mesh network system that simply uses Apple hardware of all kinds to provide LAN services. All that's needed is a high-speed main router connection. I took apart an older Airport Extreme my brother had messed up and there's not much electronics in the tall cube. There's room for a 3-1/2" HDD (for Time Machine backup) along with an empty area opposite the motherboard.

I too am using the Airport Extremes, now in 2024! I have four total, three are set up as extenders. My first Extreme was bought new, the others all came from garage or estate sales. I have the extenders placed all over the house and they’re all connected to my network with wired Ethernet. I’ve got AT&T Fiber at $54/month and Speedtest shows I’m getting 310 Mbps down and 314 Mbps up in my iPad Pro 12. (Gotta love AT&T’s fiber which is symmetrical!) My Extremes are rock-solid and rarely, if ever, do I have to reboot them. I worry that I’m using older technology for my routers, but someone advised me that stability can be worth more than speed. With three extenders in this house (which is a bit of overkill) I certainly don’t have any weak zones for my Wyze cameras, home automation devices, etc. I too wish Apple would return to the Router market.

I still use an Apple AirPort Extreme and I love it! The fact that it does have gigabit ports is great, supports all the devices at my home and office, good speed, never crashes.... I bought it in 2016 and works as new.

Using 3 apple airport extreme routers since 2018. Have them linked together as network extenders. Love them and so far they have never failed. Don't care if wifi speeds maxes out at ~600mb/s. Network stability trumps over speed every time!

APPLE BRING BACK AIRPORT EXTREME- pretty please.

Greetings from the future. My network still runs on the AirPort Extreme. And d-suck the is the router that drove me to the AirPort Extreme. Even though hardware it old, would be to much for apple to send out a firmware update once a year. Thanks for sharing your experience.

been using an Airport Extreme for over 8 years now. it has 100% pass-through 1Gbps speed (if that's the right term) and backs up selected iMacs on our network. will be replacing the hdd today in it to keep it going for another 8 years with reliable speed and backups. UPDATE: Got an 8TB Seagate Barracuda to do the swap / refresh on the hard drive, because a month or so ago, I started noticing incomplete backups to it, and then I got the occasional flashing amber light on the Airport Extreme. Had to power cycle to get rid of it, but then I did a disk util scan and it showed a red-x fail. So, I decided to replace the hard drive. The replacement went just fine (don't break the little connectors!). I share this to encourage everyone to replace the hard drives as soon as you get these recycled units (after you snoop around on the existing drive to see what was there! hah!!!). The Airport Extreme's are bulletproof!

It's really crappy that they didn't support you and glad you are letting everyone know. Sorry for the hassle and thanks for sharing

Since the Apple Airport Extreme came out, I have never used another brand in my house. I know its old and sometimes I have to do some changes to its settings to make it work again, but nothing crazy compared to commercial brand may require. I agree with you on this!

I still using apple Airport Extreme more that 6 years and it still solid, no issue, easy to use. I also pair it with small airport as signal extend for my home. Hope that apple bring this product line back since they now plan to start using there own network module.

The only routers that have been solid for me have been Apple's and Eero. Using an Eero now and very happy with it. Other routers are hot garbage. Good video!

I had a similar issue, setting up a home network in LATAM (LatinAmerica) with D-link products and it was a god damn headache. I ended up using a pair of old Airport extreme FIRST GENERATION, you know, the ones that looked like a plastic Apple Mini, from a thrift store... and everything has been working just fine since.

I been having my airport time cap and the AirPort Express since they came out an I never stop using them they don’t kick people off an if you have more than one you can extend the Wi-Fi so because of that I used to have a desktop connected to the Wi-Fi extended one in the back of the house an I worked perfectly

I have used exclusively Asus routers for like 10 years in my parents apartment and recommend them with confidence. We've had d-link and tplink, all were super weird a year after purchase. This Asus one we have had for 5 years? Very stable

I always liked how the Airport line of products looked. What sort of speeds are you getting on it?

If you use both the 2.4 and 5 Ghz channels, does that split the speed on wifi? I have an ethernet cable going directly into my Apple TV from my AEBS, and I get almost the full 1000Mbps. On wifi (5Ghz) right next to the router, I get about 500. That said, I still like my AEBS, and still haven’t found a reason to replace it.

I had a xiaomi R4A GIGABIT (20€) and worked perfectly, then I modded it with OpenWRT because paranoid and worked perfectly even then, except the feature i needed (wireless bridge, have to bridge the connection between floors, but can't drill the pavement xD)

I had a similar problem (sort of) with my wireless connection. After my kids were hounding me of how slow the internet was and how the modem kept dropping out (connect disconnect, switch off then on again), I decided to change from one service provider to another. I'd thought I would upgrade the modem so the new provider gave me a Netcomm [blah blah] and it turned out to be worse. The tech support guy from the new provider was really helpful in trying to resolve my issue. After disconnecting every wireless device in the household and only having my MacBook Pro just 1 metre away from the wireless modem, it was still slow. So 3.5hrs later the tech support guy could not work out the issue.
