    I love the "Dreams of Gaia"!! For me, it is such a healing intuitive deck that has been a great source of wisdom for readings. I've been moving a bit more towards decks that have their own methodology which has expanded my practice. I like a good learning experience within my practice. 👍
    We are all different readers and we will have different experiences with decks. Being an empath, I feel when a deck is truly connecting with me I spend the time needed to immerse in its message. Because of that, my tarot deck collection is tiny and I rotate no more than six and seven working decks when doing readings; each has their unique purpose. 🌙 ✨ 🌹

    I really enjoyed this video and agreed with so much of what you said! I love 'taroracle' - totally appropriate! I'm similar to you I think in that I love the system of tarot, but I also think it's important for tarot to grow and evolve. I definitely think Osho Zen fits into the tarot category more easily than the other two. I liked what you said about not appreciating keywords on 'standard' tarot decks, but appreciating them on 'taroracles' - I absolutely agree with that. Although, my beloved Gill has keywords, so there are exceptions to every rule! I think I'm getting on with the DoG so well because I decided to use it as an oracle. I felt a lot like you, that I felt reliant on the deck because finding the connection was difficult. I'm lucky in that the pictures to speak to me, although I wonder if perhaps, long term, I;m missing out on learning a really wonderful system. I would totally be up for some kind of DoG/taroracle challenge!
    Thanks, as always, for your wonderfully thoughtful video! :)

    I've been working with this deck for a while now and it's just a stretch too "open interpretation" for my liking. The book is beautiful but I keep reaching for it, and I'm thinking of memorizing them, but, I just wish I had better images to react to. You pretty much said that so, i agree with you! P.S. My deck didnt come guilded, I edged it myself in Azure Blue. It's pretty 🦋🌷

    Thank you so much for this. I am fairly new to Tarot, (only 6 or 7 months) and had seen this deck and thought it was beautiful, but getting to see you go through it, not just do a "walk through" and actually discuss it made me realize it isn't really for me. I love the way you explain/discuss the decks. I feel like I am sitting, having a conversation with a friend.

    The Osho Zen was my first ever deck, I read with it for a good few years. I didn't even know there were different systems at the time! I never liked the Schizophrenia card and I always removed the Osho card. I don't really read with it anymore but I keep it for sentimental reasons. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these decks. You've invented a new word too! Taroracles!

    Hi Tom, I enjoyed this video. I have very similar views about the Dreams of Gaia. I think the artwork is beautiful but the choice to alter the system is IMHO somewhat unnecessary.I don’t agree with your opinion about the Osho zen deck. That deck may have a different perspective than f.i. the RWS but it has the exact same structure. It does have the same court system which is indicated by the symbols at the bottom of the cards. The “master card” is an extra 79th card and can be easely removed from the deck without disrupting the tarot system.
    With respect to Katey F and you, I think the choice for the word schizophrenia should not be perceived as “a joke” or “making light of mental illness”. The word is not used in the context of mental illness but in a more general sense. (Like the word paranoia often is used to describe a cultural or social phenomena i.s.o. a mental illness) May be the artist would choose another term if she would publish the deck in this day and age but the deck is 23 years old and in 1995 it would not even cross our mind that someone would feel offended by this word. We used these kind of terms all the time. And we did not mean any harm.

    Ooh I was waiting for this video about the Dreams of Gaia. I've come across this dialogue online about the Dreams of Gaia where tarotists refuse to acknowledge that this is a tarot deck. I'm a little disheartened by this because for one they're willing to accept the innovation made to tarot in the 20th Century, but dismiss any innovation made today and instead label it as "oracle." Dreams of Gaia does require a person to study the system, but I'm glad it exists because it acknowledges that there are other ways to perceive a life's journey beyond what existing systems currently present. Also, the deck to me really fits to its tagline - that it's a personal healing deck - especially because of the representations/keywords she's chosen. We go through life with obstacles and suffering, joy and completion, and we "adult" through it. Whereas I know that with some readers of traditional tarot systems (especially students) they often get anxious when bad cards/spreads appear, and that can sometimes worsen the situation than be helpful.
    I agree that I dislike The Child card, but I can sort of fathom why it's there and the choice the artist made to its design (I see the child as androgynous because before the mid-20th century male children were dressed in shifts, and the colour pink was associated with masculinity, whereas today it's the opposite. I can talk meta but that would be too much of a ramble then ^_~)
    I have one gripe with the deck where the characters are "blank-faced" but even I can reason that away. I do love this deck, and I admit it was my "deck that surprises me" for 2017.

      Love that. Yes, we can totally get stuck in the mud, us tarot folk. So I'm always interested when people break the mold--even if I don't always wind up going down that path. Thanks for this awesome comment! Love!

      Thanks for your comment. I’ve been stuck on choosing my first tarot deck for a while now; many of the RWS styles just don’t appeal to me but I really liked the look of this one. I was worried it would deviate too much from the standard tarot but I think I’ll give it a try now. Thanks.

    Hi Tom. Regarding your comment about the swords (approx. 46:00 minutes in): I, like you, appreciate balance in a deck. I would urge you, however, to view the RWS deck more holistically. Don't expect each suit to be balanced. Rather, think of the Minor Arcana as a unit, and the suit of swords (and wands for that matter) as a balance to the other suits. The troubles depicted in the swords and the challenges depicted in the wands help balance out the happiness and success of the cups and pentacles. We don't need for each suit to be balanced, but rather the deck as a whole.

    • @thefoolsjournal
      @thefoolsjournal  6 років тому +2

      Yup. Believe it or not, I've spent a lot of years studying the RWS deck. But what's become important to me over the years as a reader is the way the elements reflect particular areas of our lives. So what I require from a deck is that no suit be entirely or primarily negative. I think if I'd come to appreciate a more caromantic style, I'd really like the swords from RWS. But because the suit to me is about thought, learning, words, communication, etc., I need the suit to be more balanced. So I appreciate when decks break the RWS mold, because, for me, it's not a suit of conflict; it's a suit of words and learning and thinking, etc.

    I tend to think of "Taroracles" to be many of the Hayhouse "Tarot" decks that had come out with less than 78 cards. John Holland's Psychic Tarot and Psychic Tarot for the Heart, Lucy Cavendish's "Oracle Tarot" and the new "Akashic Tarot" are all examples of oracle decks with a partial tarot system attached it or rather removing important parts of a tarot structure. To me, a tarot deck MUST have at least 78 cards (with the exception of Minchiate/Tarocchini/etc decks). Dream of Gaia for me is a bit of both. Or rather a tarot deck that follows its own system rather than it simply just being an oracle alone. Just like what I would consider the Wildwood Tarot. Osho Zen is still RWS based to a small degree but the keywords definitely make it more useable as an oracle deck. I ended up trading my copy because I really could not get past the Schizophrenia card.

    • @thefoolsjournal
      @thefoolsjournal  6 років тому

      It's a tough card, right? It's tempting to want to take it out, but then it's not really the deck anymore...it's not like removing the Master card (which always makes me think of credit cards 🤣). I don't know much about those Hayhouse decks... I'll have to take a peek.

    I’ve been on the fence about Osho Zen for absolute years. I’ve heard so many good things about it but I just couldn’t connect with some of the different kinds of artwork. I still don’t know whether it’s one for me to buy but it always calls me too look again.

    • @thefoolsjournal
      @thefoolsjournal  6 років тому +1

      I still don't know, either. 😀 But it is one that rewards some consideration. I pulled three cards today, randomly, and I thought, "Oh, this is useless." Then I tried it with an actual question, and it read fairly well. So... I'm so confused!!

      Tom Benjamin I’m sure I will end up with one day. The was a copy at a shop I worked in before and I played around with it and was pleasantly surprised. I think it’s just a few of the cards and titles that have put me off this far.

    • @melaniewoods

      Osho Zen was one I felt drawn to and repelled by at the same time - hated the keywords, but it kept nagging at me to buy it. I always (erm, almost always) listen to my intuition, so bought it. Didn't connect with it at all, but I'm a trimmer, so those borders came off, and I cut the titles off as well, just leaving the number diamonds which, once you get to grips with the court symbols, and rainbows being earth/pentacles, tie up exactly with standard tarot. After trimming about half a dozen, I completely fell in love with the deck - it's remained one of my favourites ever since (about a year), and a fantastic clear reader. I highly recommend scissors and corner rounder ;-)

    I really liked this video! I got the dreams of Gaia I really enjoy the messages it brings. But like you I’m in the book constantly. I can’t do a very large spread because each (most) cards are so in depth and soul questioning. I have strived to pull a card a day hoping to more familiarize myself with the creators meanings because the book is so elegantly written and it leads us to question our views. (In my opinion). And I enjoy that. Thanks for the video!

    Oh, thank you so much for this. I actually own this deck but haven’t had a chance to take a deep dive into it. I thought it was as you originally described what we usually think of these decks - “tarot plus.” Your explanation saves me the time and trouble of figuring it out for myself and again, THANK YOU. I now know this may be the perfect deck for me. The problem is It’s in storage in another city. Arrgg! I happen to love the differences from the court cards. The court cards in the RW deck are the bane of my existence. In fact, I discovered you because of your excellent video explaining your take on them. The polarities, roles, etc. make perfect sense to me and I believe are an excellent addition to a tarot or oracle deck. I will have to retrieve my deck so I can take that swim. Thanks!

    It's interesting to see how others view decks that are out of the box or "taroracles" (which is a cute name btw lol). To me, the two decks that are like that read very much like a tarot deck. I really only use oracle decks when I'm doing spreads with tarot. (I'd like to change that, but that's where I'm at atm.) Oracle decks, to me, always feel very broad, and tarot feels more precise. Plus, they just feel like tarot decks. I also think it's interesting when you have a tarot deck that has its own thing going on with usually the minors. Like, I have a few decks where one or more minor cards have meanings that aren't RWS or how I've come to start reading pip cards. (Like, at least one in the Black Cat Tarot and also the TaRat.) The two "taroracle" decks that I have are the Wildwood Tarot and also the Cosmos Tarot.
    Also, I would be so tempted to use my Instagram for a taroracle challenge instead of just using it to look at pictures of my favorite band. lol.

      Only videos of my daughter fighting in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournaments lol.
      I find that Dreams of Gaia reads well for the purposes of personal growth with less emphasis on outside influence (less divination, more inner journey style readings). After studying that system, I found myself looking at RWS in a more introspective way. I suppose most people use tarot for divination, but I've been using it more as a tool for perspective
