Ive started going on AOTY. I like being able to write a couple paragraphs, give my 2 cents and a rating. But I've always avoided Last Fm. Not even because I knew this was a thing that could happen, but more that I felt adding another site and app that I'd have to log into and give data to that looked like it hasn't been updated in so long wasn't my thing. Do I sometimes go on discord servers and lament that I can't use the lastfm bot that everyone else is to compare music taste and stuff? Sure! But then again the site never appealed to me, and I'm sure if it did I'd be as scrobble devoted as you got if not twice as bad. Personally in fact I had noticed I was kind of getting too invested with the AOTY reviews so I basically have to keep it too going to whatever album I'm looking for putting in my 2 paragraphs, rating it, and leaving before a single fuck can be given about what others are saying. It's allowed me to keep going with it as the fun outlet it is without it having any negative effect on my day. I still want to eventually find a good platform for it and just write little articles on anything that piques my interest.
Also I think the handheld mic was cool. The sound was good and it felt very comfortable and casual.

honestly, so happy to see someone who does content talking about this, it's really refreshing. not just the typical influencer saying "don't forget to drink water" while scrolling, no you're describing the addiction behind social media. thank you for using your platform for good! i deleted so many social medias in recent years because of this

As someone with ADHD and a few OCD symptoms myself, this really hit home for me. It's too easy for me to forget that listening to music (or even making music) is fun, but not my entire identity as a person. If music becomes my primary source for fulfillment, there's definitely something in my life I've been neglecting that I shouldn't be lol

I can definitely see the thing about being too focused on scores, but I do have a lot of love for AOTY bc of how it helps me organize what music I’ve listened to and expose myself to lots of music I end up loving. I can see why those types of sites aren’t for everyone though :)

Maaaaan I feel ya hard. I stayed away from stuff like FM and RYM because I knew if I fell down that rabbit hole I'd never get out. To me it gamifies the act of listening to music and if you start listening to music just to up your stats on an app or site then that's not fair to yourself OR the music. Glad to hear you're enjoying yourself again!
Also, the audio sounds great on my earbuds. And hey microphone holding is so in rn 😎

I’m burnt out from Instagram. Completely different issue and I know you relate since you left social media a while ago which you referenced here. I’m taking a long social media break from there and it’s helping.
I miss connecting with music as one of my special interests. I’ve had the idea to make a video about music I’ve enjoyed lately but then my inner critic gets the best of me and I shut down and don’t do it. I just recently quit my job and am deep in autistic / adhd burnout so it’s challenging for me to focus on new music at this time.
I’m hoping that checking out some of your Spotify playlists will help! I’ve really loved Spotify but I wouldn’t use any tools beyond that because I can see how my ocd would latch onto being hyper organized / perfectionistic if I did.
So glad you figured out what you need for yourself and are making values aligned decisions that make you feel better ❤

This is crazy because literally almost everything you said about this is very true to me. I love the website but I’ve noticed it takes over how I’ve been listening to music. I’ve been only listening to CDs in the car to help distance myself from cataloging everything I hear. Really interesting to hear your thoughts on this! I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone talk about it this straightforward. Keep it up!

I've been using the free version of Last FM for a little over two years now and it's fine, I guess? I look forward to the weekly reports and like to check my scrobbles if I'm on my computer sometimes, but I'm not super obsessed about it. It does not have some annoying quirks, like counting Twitter videos as scrobbles and counting plays twice on Spotify mobile. But so far it's been kinda fun.
Wouldn't be too heartbroken if I had to quit for some reason though.
But overall I do like Spotify Wrapped and other things that analyze my music taste. Kinda feeds my narcissism. 😁

I might be in the minority here and it might seem a bit extreme, but over the past two years I’ve been incredibly addicted creating Spotify playlists comprised of the evolution of a genre from its birth up until modern day. Whether it’s, alternative rock, nu metal, post-punk, progressive rock, etc. I’ve carefully and thoroughly arranged every song/album that dropped in chronological order by either month originally released or month originally recorded that specific year. I can also greatly relate to you that I also have ADHD as well as ADD. And yes, although I’m very passionate about my playlists, they take up a tremendous amount of time to make and I often sometimes find myself staying up well into the night crafting these beasts. It’s like I’m determined to make my own radio stations lol

    • @laurisaarinen1126

Same here, except i just make playlists of my very favorite songs (ones i don't have on albums, since i collect cd's and rip them to my phone)... so i have to order everything perfectly with my rules, having OCD and probably ADD. I can lose hours to creating my playlists and often i just obsessively listen to music to find certain songs to fit on my lists. It can be very frustrating with mental disorders like that.

Same happened to me but I noticed this very early. I'm still obsess with stats (like wanting to make an specific song my most played song of this year) but not as much as before like I have to listen to this song 10 thousand times to make it the most played. As an example of this summer I tried to make Shake It Off the most played song beating High Hopes but it was more playing it for make it top 1 (though it was very succesful). And it's not that I hate the song but I find more fun just listening what I want to listen instead of listening to a song only for make it the most played one by scrobbles.
I'm not leaving the site but I'll be trying to enjoy more rather than just listening for stats. Because it's fun to know how many times I've listened to a song. But I'm definetely stepping out of going daily and focusing on making these specific stats. To me the only stats that matter are the end of the year summary (like Spotify Wrapped) because it's cool to see and be shocked at my most listened music (which sometimes it ends up being very shocking). Aside of that, I'll be enjoying music because I love it, not for stats.

I guess I don't have an addictive personality in that way. I use Last FM as a tool, especially for the 6 months and year-end lists and also if I heard a song on a playlist but wasn't sure what it was so I can log into Last FM and it will tell me. I have been using it for years but I do have some years were it is patchy and one year, it actually double counted. So I take it all with a pinch of salt now. But overall the trends of my all-time lists I am happy with.
As for RYM just joined last year and I have been using it for a project to listen to albums from the past where I have made album lists from 1980-1992 and a massive 2023 one. I have listened to over 2500 albums this year nearly all in full. This though means my year-end Last Fm and Spotify are now so messed up but you can't have everything. This whole project is to keep me away from news and social media so for that purpose it was well spent time. :)

for me, i think the beauty of lastfm is knowing that im listening to whatever i feel like and therefore my scrobbles are going to be accurate. i dont ever listen to music to boost my scrobble count, in fact sometimes while im driving (where 80% of my music listening happens) sometimes ill call a friend or listen to a podcast specifically to take a break from listening to music. i just like seeing the stats of what im listening to. yes, sometimes im tempted to listen to something to influence those statistics to be more varied, but then i remember that thats stupid and i should just listen to what i feel like. if yhat means listening to the new Porter Robinson song 10 times in a row, then that's what ill do.

I joined last fm in January 2020 and I wouldn't say it's affected me where I don't enjoy the music as much as before, at least not to a significant degree but I do think like you that I check it too often & have become more obsessed with the numbers, comparing my library to others
I'm glad you realized that it affected you negatively and feel better now, I reflect on this pretty frequently as well and it's probably not an uncommon issue for other users

my big problem out of it is that I'm not able to have stats for my CDs, vinyl, or my Smart TV listening, plus the fact that there's so many different titles for the same song across multiple albums across multiple services lol

  • @lisandroxiii5031
    @lisandroxiii5031 7 місяців тому +1

I get your feeling. I personally do like to look at the stats and I'm on the one you mentioned, not pro tho. This did push me to listen to more music, and though knowing that I don't have as many minutes of playing as the normal listener, I did put as a goal to listen to more music this year, as I wanted to listen to more albums and expand my music taste a little bit more.
Gotta say that I do kinda play in the "what I would like my stats to look like" but I do it mostly when a certain artist overtakes my lists when I feel is not representative of what I've been actually listenting too.
Fr it pissess me off when an artist that I stopped listening in months still overtakes my stats. Like, I moved on idk what else I gotta do. And it's not that I was obsessed with them at a time. Idk, that's the only time were I would try to trick those numbers. If not I just look at then casually, for now. Like yeah, I kinda play a little bit with it when I don't want those numbers to look a certain way, but by the end of the year I just let faith decide and for Spotify to surprise me, which they always do and why I did made an account on Last f.m.

I feel this big time. While I don't really browse the site much, I obsess over making sure my listens are scrobbled (especially for my yearly album tierlist) I have spent tons of time manually putting stuff in, tons of times where I have been listening to vinyl and I had the stuff on spotify playing silently in tandem LOL

I have always tried to avoid anything related to logging music for these reasons, for me music is something that I need to enjoy in the moment and I want to focus my time on it, building playlists etc from it which is great.
I am an avid film watcher, I am studying a film degree, and use Letterboxd quite frequently, however I try to use it simply as a diary, rather than the social aspect. Whenever I watch films I switch off my phone to avoid distractions as a precaution as well so I can give it my full attention and get the most enjoyment out of it. I think as soon as an app becomes a distraction rather than a tool to help me keep track, then it's not worth it for me.
That being said, that's just my opinion, can completely understand what you're saying.

Now with the game console industry moving more and more away from physical media and more towards always online DRM, I have been spending more time with my PC and modding instead and I think I have almost completely stopped caving into that dumb addiction and can go back to just enjoying gameplay like I used to.
