Honor Killings In Pakistan: The Kohistan Case
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 лис 2018
- In May 2012, a grainy cellphone video emerged in a remote and deeply conservative village in northern Pakistan. The video showed four young women singing and clapping in a room as two young men danced to the music. The village elders saw the celebration as a blatant defiance of strict tribal customs that separate men and women at gatherings, and a decree was issued for those in the video and their families to be killed as their actions were deemed 'dishonorable.'
The women and one of their sisters, aged just 12, were allegedly imprisoned for a month and tortured before being killed. The men went into hiding but three of their brothers were shot dead.
Every year, nearly a thousand people are known to be killed in the name of honor in Pakistan. Many more go unreported, considered a part of everyday life - but the killings in Kohistan became national news after the surviving brother of the victims made it his mission to seek justice. VICE News host Hani Taha travels to Pakistan to meet Afzal Kohistani to investigate one of the country's most perplexing honor killing cases, three years on.
Produced by Academy Award and Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, VICE News finds out some of the grimmest truths about the pervasive culture of so-called honor killings in the region.
This video was originally published on VICE in 2016.

@Sophie S I read quite a few, did you? Afzal spoke to a lot of local media besides Vice in the 3 years following the publication. Kohistani campaigned for over seven years to keep the case in the public eye. Java Films also released a video in 2016, called "Honor Killings Unveiled: The Kohistan Video Scandal"
"On July 31, 2018, a new case was registered at Palas police station on the Supreme Court's orders.
Four suspects namely Umar Khan, Saber, Mohammad Sarfraz and Saeed were arrested. Upon interrogation, the suspects confessed to killing three of the girls - Begum Jan, Sireen Jan and Bazeega - by firing, saying they had disposed of the bodies in Nala Chorh.
Afzal had been of the firm view that the suspects were lying. “They killed all five girls by severe torture and are not identifying graves as it will reveal their brutality,” he had said at the time.
Afzal had been receiving constant death threats, prompting the Supreme Court to direct the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to provide him security, but the orders were reportedly not followed.
In January this year, while talking to media representatives in Bisham, Afzal had said that during the last court hearing he was scared as his rivals had informed their group about his arrival at the civil court in Kolai-Palas Kohistan."

As a Pakistani citizen hailing from Abbottabad city, and having enjoyed a very close relationship with a poor yet happy Kohistani family, this hits home. It's bewildering and shocking that a video could spiral into an unnecessary and tragic loss of lives. Things are slowly changing for the better, but there are still a lot of barbaric, old, and rural mindsets that plague this country, resulting in this and many more tragic local events.
