    First- If we had to list the importance of variables when sharpening a chainsaw chain, in my mind it would look like this:
    1- The amount of hook on each tooth that is controlled by the file/stone depth while sharpening and the file/stone diameter.
    2- The sharpness of the front and side edge of each tooth
    3- The raker height that controls the thickness of cut. This will vary between 25 thou up to 35 thou depending on the power of the individual saw. The rakers on a brand new chain will need to be filed down if that chain is going on a more powerful saw that can take a larger shaving with each pass.
    4- The angle each tooth is sharpened at is of much less importance than 1-3 above.
    The beauty of any chain sharpening guide is that it allows one to easily keep the hook optimal by controlling the depth of the file/stone from the tooth top, so the tooth edge cuts cleanly; however, it's important not to leave the edge too slight an angle which would cause the tooth to dull more quickly. Note that the chainsaw sharpener guide (both a file guide or stone type guide) only needs to be adjusted once to control this for the life of the sharpening guide. Therein lies the real beauty of a sharpening guide.
    Second- The 12 volt Oregon sharpener does not have the large black plastic guide support that you mentioned which blocks ones view.
    Third- I have found that sharpening the entire chain from the right side of the bar allows the stone to sharpen the teeth as it rotates upward which will form a tiny burr on each tooth edge to verify that it is then sharp. At my age one cannot see the sharpness of the edge but this tiny burr can easily be felt with ones fingernail. It takes half a second to drag ones fingernail over each tooth after you deem the tooth is sharp just to verify.
    Forth- The quality of the sharpening stone is far more important than the type of Dremel type sharpener. Any first time user would be discouraged with a Dremel type sharpener if they are unlucky enough to use a poor stone. A proper stone will feel gritty like a nail file if ones fingernail is dragged over it. A low quality stone will sharpen a few teeth and then does more burnishing than sharpening. A good stone will require only a couple of passes to sharpen a tooth that is slightly dull after cutting up a cord of clean hardwood.

      Excellent points! I ordered a few of the Oregon bits to try with this tool as well. I like them but the stone fails pretty quickly on them where the diamond metal ezzdoo bits seem to last a bit longer. Now that I have had this tool for a while, I use it for quick touch ups when I am in a hurry but have found that hand filing still gives me the best result. Thanks for watching!

    How's she goin'? That looks like a nice unit. Sure didn't take long to file the chain and the results were impressive!!! What to you do for the rakers? How often would you file those down? Thanks for sharing and Happy New Year!!!

      Hi Mike, I check the rakers once in a while with my little gauge and a flat file. Just takes a minute and you can feel the saw grab into the wood better as a result. This is a neat little power tool. I was sceptical at first but I guess the proof was in the time trial! Thanks for stopping by!

    Great video. I use those 2 n 1 sharpeners and they seem to work ok but takes a while with a 24-25" bar and lately my hands start cramping about 1/3 of the way through it, not a huge deal but any time you can find something thats faster and works well is a plus. Ive seen these popping up on several videos and they all say they work well.

      I get good results with mine. I run the oregon bits in it which I prefer. From time to time I'll file by hand but generally, this sharpener does the trick. Hand filing does seem to cramp my hands too!

    The Stihl 12 volt portable sharpener works real good for me. It has a long cord with battery clips and uses different size stones to sharpen the chain. Really good out on the fire road when the chain needs a freshening to cut good again. I do use it as well to sharpen before going up the mountain. Works very similar to yours.

      Yes, much faster than a round file. I saw a trick from Sweden where they file the saw and then use a smaller hand file to do the underside of the tooth again. I’ll take the time to do this once in a while because it really seems to make a difference.

    The issue with that style of sharpener is that every tooth will not be identical after grinding. Just as with hand filing. A bench grinder for chains will deliver a more consistent result. I also hand filed for 35 years, but after getting the bench grinder I'll not go back. I do bring a file into the forest in case I run out of chains tough.

    • @OakMountainAcotts
      @OakMountainAcotts  2 роки тому

      That is good feedback! I’ve been eyeing the bench grinders, is there a make and model you would recommend?

    • @rolfnilsen6385
      @rolfnilsen6385 2 роки тому

      @@OakMountainAcotts I am using a "cheap" Oregon grinder. There are better units out there with adjustment in all three axis and high precision bearings. There are even units upgrade-able to diamond grinding stones. Mine have neither but stills gives me much better chains than I was able to sharpen by hand :-)
      As a "bonus" all my friends who use chainsaws also come to visit and sharpen a few chains. Then they take them home and sharpen by hand until it is time for a new round in the grinder. I take that as confirmation that I am not the only one who thinks the grinder is more consistent than handheld units.
      The one thing to look out for with a bench grinder is to not remove to much material from the teeth. There is a little bit of play in the hinge on the grinder so I adjust the wheel to not touch the tooth, and then I apply a few kilos of sideways force on the handle to just touch the tooth. Learnt that from a Logosol chainsaw sharpening video. They also have some very nice stuff for sharpening.

    Hand filing for me is as quick as that pretty much as long as you have not really damaged your chain. I file a lot as I cut 100 full cord of firewood in the winter from December to the 1st of April I do notice my angles aren’t perfect but if it’s sharp and I’m close it cuts well I may lose a little time cutting but it’s not enough to worry about the the splitting, stacking and loading is what takes the time with wood. Good review by the way.

I have some videos on UA-cam and you can watch if you like, it’s unreal the damage that occurred. I made one of a area when I started cutting and once I’m done there I will make another to show the difference. I never make it a job just break up my day as I am off for the winter every year. I get ask how long it takes and I have never really kept track but I am going to this year and see roughly how long it takes to cut split and stack a cord.
