We are still really confused on why those bulbs didn't split into cloves. We had plenty of super cold nights up here in the Ranges. If you have any insights, we would love your help.
@madrabbitwoman We have grown garlic year on year here for over a decade without ever popping any in the fridge, as we get cold including sub zero temps here in winter. I looked back at our Facebook posts and even this year had shares about the cold. It's super confusing.
This is such a puzzle isn't it? I think I'm fairly close to you, just on the edge of the Dandenongs. I grew successful garlic for the first time this season, the only difference between us I think, it looks like I planted mine a lot deeper than yours. Either way, your son was great fun & very encouraging for you 👍
@ImGlyn It's always extra fun in the garden when one of our boys join. That is wonderful to hear of your sucess close by. Any chance you recall the variety you grew? I'm still on the hunt for good ones for here.
@@Bush_Edge_Homesteading_Aus Oh goodness, I wish I knew - I bought the bulbs from the Garden Express car park sale for $2 p/pack.. They were pretty old & battered. Checking their website, it must have been the Australian Purple.
@ROCKPILEOffgridHomestead that's super interesting that some of yours didn't split too. They looked incredible in the vid, which had me confused they would split into cloves there where it is warmer. But then not here.
@rentedspace7462 that is the upside. Hubby cooked with some a couple of nights ago and the one he choose was really strong. And of course I have no idea which variety he chose 🤣
G'day again. Garlic can be surprisingly tricky sometimes. We had the same problem with our shallots not dividing but our garlic came out ok this year. Cheers
I planted a mix of kangaroo island white garlic and a couple of woolworths garlic ( the one with white and redish skin) in May. I lifted them mid November. Happy with the result here in Dandenong ranges. Bigger than your bulbs from what i can see. Is your garlic patch in full sun for winter and spring?
Hi Rachel. In Monbulk and got 75 huge heads of garlic. Happy to share if you like. Kangaroo Island seed garlic is amazing. 3rd year growing and always a huge success.
Sadly far from full sun due to all the trees up here and being in a valley. It's in one of the sunniest spots, but still pretty ordinary in the winter.
@@Bush_Edge_Homesteading_Aus I have the same trouble for the most part, however I have a 6 X 1 meter bed that gets full sun all year round at least 7 hours. I wonder if you grew garlic in grow bags on your uncovered verandah would it be any better? You could move the bags around and chase the sun if your feeling energetic!
I feel your pain. Our garlic was piddly and small this year too. Flavour amazing but man what a lot of work to use it for cooking. We’ve already started harvesting our onions as well.
Hubby tried the new garlic last night. Like yours the flavour was really good... despite the fiddly prep. At least that is an upside! Here's to bigger bulbs for us both next year 🤞
The braids and hanging in the kitchen at the start of this video is how we normally store our harvests. The varieties we have been growing last nearly the full year like that. The ones for planting, we normally snip off the tops and put the bulbs whole in newspaper or a brown paper bag. They then go in our linen closest, where it is cooler, dry and dark.
If it hasn't started dieing back do keep it going longer. We normally pick around the week before Christmas (being guided by the plants). This year was a real curve ball with encountering rust the 1st time, so we did go a bit earlier than normal for us.

That is super sweet of you Leeanne 💖💖💖 You wouldn't happen to recall the name of the variety you are having sucess with there? Being so close hopefully we would get similar success here too. Do you ever go to the Dandenong Collective swap group in Mobulk at the market?
@leeannemacarthur46 Don't feel the need to go out of your way, but if you do definitely say hi. Or even in the future as we try to go along to as many as we can. 😀

Just curious if you started you garlic in the fridge?

Some of our Rojo didn’t split either. Very interesting garlic year! I agree with that the rust is the culprit. 🏅💪

Always worth the effort, very sad outcome for you 💔🌱
@@lyndalmartin3581 I couldn't agree more that it is always worth the effort 😀
My garlic was an epic fail this year. Same garlic as my mum and her harvest was fabulous. Try again next year
@sallyradcliffe-hh6ud it does sound like many of us had a challenging year. Wonderful your Mum had that sucess. Upwards for next years growing! 😀
Thank you for the update garlic video.
I’m sorry it wasn’t a super bumper crop
Hopefully it tastes great anyway

@ that’s great. Although hard for replanting next year.
G'day again. Garlic can be surprisingly tricky sometimes. We had the same problem with our shallots not dividing but our garlic came out ok this year. Cheers
It has definitely thrown us a curve ball this year. Up until last year, we always considered it one of our bombproof, simple crops.

I just realised Kangaroo Island IS the variety 🤦♀️🤣
@leeannemacarthur46 Glad to hear someone else is having a success with it.

I live in Ashwood and my Italian red is amazing
That's really interesting hearing that variety does do well in Vic. Thanks for sharing.

How do you store your harvest? We having grown but did a big order to hopefully get us through the year

My first year growing garlic it is in pots and haven’t started to die back yet ,so not quite sure when it will be ready to pick .Dandenong ranges also

All my garlic failed except the elephant garlic - but the elephant garlic never fails me
😢
Hope watching some of the adds helps!
@kerrytaylor939 it's very sweet of you to do so. I wind back the default ones UA-cam adds, so hopefully it's a better watch that way.
I feel that your ground is a bit compacted
It was turned as the compost was mixed through it prior to planting. But has settled over the growing season.

Waving at you both from Upper Gully 👋
@@Bush_Edge_Homesteading_Aus Hi Rachel. The variety is kangaroo Island. It's a hard neck. I can go to the market. I believe it's on this Saturday. 💗
