We used to plant our potatoes in rows and hill the dirt up on the plant. That made it easier to harvest the potatoes because they weren't buried in the ground but more on the ground in the hill. We usually waited till the plant died before digging them up. Root cellars are great for keeping potatoes of any kind and other fresh vegetables too. Red potatoes, Kennebec, Russet, all good potatoes.
Nice. I had a bumper crop of Yukon Gold this year. I finished my harvest in April. I'm in the Fl panhandle and get two crops per year. My next planting will be in August.
@@starrbabyhomestead Gardening has gotten harder since 2011. I noticed a change then. Gardening can be heartbreaking, and it makes me think of the old timers that relied on their garden for survival. We can always head to the grocery store.
My Fav's are Red, Yukon Gold, Russets. Reds & Yukon Golds are great for mashed and boiled and Yukon Gold's rendered down with onion, maybe a pepper too included w/S&P and butter umm umm. Hash browns from Russets, American fried's also. But all three will do great. With Yukon Gold I generally don't peel them. Red's I peel and Russets I peel. So I generally get the Yuk's. I did buy some russets this week and have made tater tots and hash browns for freezing and included a couple Yuk's to see how they would do. It all worked fine. I'm 77 October past, 2024. So tiny garden spots and buckets I am learning. And I live in apartment's. I enjoyed watching your potato harvest in June. That never occurred to me. Great Job! david
I’ve always had ants or pincher bugs in tater plantings then read to plant radishes so I did this year. Radishes did grow no bugs. I’ve never had luck with seed potatoes. Used organic store bought taters well aged this year excellent harvest!! A local said to get seed taters from my local southern states store or my local coop. I’m trying that next planting.
New subscriber, Here in montgomery county, Texas I plant my onions in November for sweet Vadalia onions & creole red from Dixondale farms here in TEXAS or hoss tools in georgia , I get my onions & seed potatoes from Hoss . My onions I harvest in April 317 beautiful onions , we dried on shelving . I stopped planting our tators in the beds due to my back , We use 20 gallon grow bags for the potatoes and even my sweet potatoes alot easier to just dump out .... God bless you I planted our sweet potatoe slips I grew myself the middle of May in the grow bags . Great harvest you got 👏 Thank you . Mrs josette Montgomery county, Texas 🙏
you might wanna ad some sharp sand to your beds forpotatos carrots beets and such. It will help make the soil looser so you can just pull up the plants. You did a lot better than I did my first year.
It is neat! That was a gift from an old boss when I bought my first house. I have no idea what it is called and I have never seen anything like it in stores.
New sub here, planted my russets in ground early may, soil was great then, now i get water logs in that soot so am worried about rotten potatoes, but as soon as i realized that i ordered grow bags and put a bunch of potato seeds in them bcz dang it,,,, am harvesting potatoes come hell or high water this year😂😂😂
This weather has been insane. I am worried about my russets too. They look pretty sad. But you never know. I thought this harvest was going to be bad and I was pleasantly surprised!
Good morning, how are you? That was an awesome harvest. I love the Yukon gold, which is my favorite. I grew them this year. My first and I will grow again.
I had maybe 9 red potatoes i'd bought for my super worms to eat left over that grew eyes i weighed my harvest and got 15 lbs i also had planted some kennebec and haven't harvested all yet but i got about 25 lbs and still have more than a 4x10 bed left to harvest some kennebec some russett
Potatoes flower sometimes, my russets always flower and it is fine you don't need to take blooms off, never have seen anyone remove them, it is a sign they are growing potatoes. Some potatoes don't seem to bloom and that is ok also maybe it depends on variety you plant. When I have planted both red and white I had some bloom lavender and some white.
It's the fun of digging for buried treasure, or watching someone dig; you never know what you're going to get.
I
Love potato harvests videos it’s like a treasure hunt. Also carrot and sweet potatoe harvest
A baking sized Yukon Gold is a joyous thing. Well done!
Thanks! I hope I can do even better next spring.

Hi, new subscriber!
You really have to let your potato plants die back more. You had a great first experience - they look great - but let nature do it’s thing.
@@Tzippy323 Thanks for the tip!
