      This is awesome to read. I'm 33 and have recently become obsessed. I'm finally starting to be able to do all of the things that I previously thought I'd never be able to do (separate limbs being the main roadblock). Every one of these exercises I complete reinvigorates me. Keep it up!

    Thanks for the vid! I've been playing ethnic hand drums for over 20 years (doumbek, tombak, djembe, etc) but have recently gotten into kit playing. Getting independence with my legs is next level and I'm loving it!!! Fun stuff indeed :-)

    I definitely advocate not "waving" your hi hat hand in the air, in place of the on-beat 1/4 notes, when you play every second 8th note. Reasons include:
    (1) "Holding back" a note eats up brain power that you need for other purposes
    (2) You will accidentally hit those notes when distracted
    (3) It will slow you down when you try to play faster
    (4) Once you get to a certain speed you will need to adjust how you play it to remove those waving motions
    (5) Playing the off-beat 8ths only, without waving the on-beat quarters in between, encourages you to be confident in playing those notes and nailing their timing perfectly.
    Obviously, your mileage may vary. And I know that waving them *seems* easier when you first move away from playing all the 8th notes ... but that's not the point.
    I also recomment you don't wave the "off-beat" 8ths when playing straight forward quarter notes on the hi-hat ... for all the same reasons.

    • @nilswegner2881
      @nilswegner2881 5 років тому +2

      Yes I totally get what you are saying but being a beginner drummer, it is one of the hardest things to not do. I am hardly able to even play anything on drums because I have only played for 3 weeks now. I'm learning all by myself with no lessons so videos like this one are kind of a no brainer for me to watch.

    • @joelstolarski2244
      @joelstolarski2244 5 років тому +1

      @@nilswegner2881 I been suffering through 3 years now, and I'm 61 years old now. First 2 years suck, and 3 years sucks too...not to mention if it sounds like shit to me, then anybody within earshot has to suffer too. Now I've got tinnitus so my ears are ringing all day long. It's worth suffering and making sure everybody else around you suffers with you. Another thing you will have to get used to is you practice a year then you get something that's called a plateau. No matter how hard you try your practice is going to sound really, really bad. You will want to throw in the towel and quit. Plateaus are bad,makes you hate the drums, life, anybody around you, they are awful, and hard to get through. They keep coming, even at three years now, i'm going through another one. A month ago I had a great practice session week. Everything sounded good, hands were doing things I never thought I could do. Fast, smooth, timing was on, compared to metronime and it was perfect. Then hit about two weeks ago. Awful practice this week, last night sucked, couldn't do a simple beat. Hope this gives you and some others warning about what to expect. Keep going, my drum friend says it worth it, just have to suffer through some heartbreak on the journey.

    • @nilswegner2881
      @nilswegner2881 5 років тому +2

      @@joelstolarski2244 well I have a story that is a bit different. I'm only 17 years old and I've been a Guitarist for 8 years now. I've always wanted to learn another instrument so 2 years ago I teached myself how to play the piano. That was too easy. But one thing was still missing. I've always been very impressed by what my band's drummer is doing so I sat down behind the drumkit in our studio and tried to play a simple beat. Didn't work that well at all. But I kept going and now I can actually play like 2 and a half different drum patterns. I guess if I keep trying I'll eventually be able to play a complete song.

    • @rchayes1996
      @rchayes1996 5 років тому +1

      @@joelstolarski2244 Sounds like you have inconsistent practice sessions and warmups. Work on rudiments with just your hands. Paradiddles, flams, double stroke rolls. Go painfully slow then go 5BPM faster on your metronome after you're comfortable. Use your hi hat and kick for time. Try playing along to songs you like that are easy. 80's rock and roll is about as easy as it gets, specifically hair metal, but you will get the fundamentals down. Practice every day if you can. Purchase a practice pad too. It sounds like you're nervous to make mistakes, if you are, a practice pad is so much quieter and won't disturb others around you, use a shirt or pillow for extra dampening. Most of all, relax and have fun. If you start messing up, slow down the tempo, maybe even take a break.

  • @andrewstahl4419

    This is literally impossible, every video I’ve looked at the simple drum beat is a beat of an experienced player

    • @raeleighnester5957
      @raeleighnester5957 3 роки тому +1

      You shouldn’t give up. I’ve been working on the first beat for over an hour and I can just now go at like 70 bpm. Going anciently slow can mess you up, so go at a nice pace that is comfortable for you. Make sure to count out loud. And if you mess up, just start the beat over and play and count with each beat. It may take a bit, but it feels great once you finally get it. I really recommend looking at his beginner drum beats from 5-6 years ago, those really helped me get started.

    • @2string861
      @2string861 2 роки тому +1

      I was in your position just a little while ago, I really recommend the video by Rob Brown that goes into detail on hitting the kick on 16th notes, I forgot exactly what its called but it should be pretty easy to find. And Stephen Clark (another youtube drum guy) has a free practice routine that has some simple excersizes that help build independence in your legs which should make it easier to play these beats
      Plus most importantly, take it real slow, and if you have to, maybe work on perfecting the first two beats of each measure, then the last two beats, and put them together. The persistence pays off and once you can finally play them you'll feel great lol

    I am sure that using words like "hard, scary and difficult" are the wrong approach to teaching anything, as they have a negative mantel impact. Better to say things like" you got this " or "If I can do it so can you".
