This has got to be the most informative, straight forth and no nonsense video on cukes ... I've never had them and needed info fast. You successfully answered all of my questions without boring me! BRAVO!!😎
Glad it was helpful
Did it work?
This is one of the best cucumber pruning videos I've seen so far. Very informative. Thank you for sharing your experience and posting.
Thank you so much. Glad it was helpful.
I never knew cucumbers needed pruning. Thanks for the info.
You're welcome
Make sure to sterilize your pruning shears between plants to reduce the risk of spreading disease. Great video, just planted some cucumber in Massachusetts. It'll climb up the chicken wire fence around my garden
❤thank you so much for your help, North Carolina girl, who loves her little garden ❤,
You're welcome
This is the first year I've gotten cucumbers to grow so when I saw all the vines from just 4 plants I was thrilled. I have what seems like millions of very tiny cucumbers but will go out tomorrow and do some chopping. Thanks.
You're welcome. Glad it is going well.
Excellent informative well balanced video ! Thank you !
You're welcome
My first year growing cucumbers and I got a bush and a vine... I never knew they grow and grow and grow...and after a big rain 😱... I'll stick to bush unless I get a bigger growing area because I'm running out of places to lead the vine to. And I've never pruned the vine, only leaves that are looking sickly.
Also my first year now, growing cukes in pots and did not know there was a bush variety....SOOO...needing info fast, I am grateful to find this. I'm sure this is the most helpful info on UA-cam!!!
Very good video,Thanks for all these great tips, MY CUMCUMBERS are my favorite thing to grow
Wow. I’ve never trimmed cukes. I’m doing it tomorrow!!! Thanks for this video
You’re welcome
Thanks for sharing the info about pruning. I notice that you have a plastic water bottle at the base of the vine. What is it for?
You’re welcome. That plastic is to protect from vine borer beetle.
@@CountryLivingExperience will papertowel roll work for that as well?
@@jawnaraestokes5836 No. Once that paper roll will disintegrate once it gets wet and won't be there long enough to prevent the borer.
Oh I have to make those painful trimmings now. I have many tight clusters of flowers and no fruits.
Invaluable information. Great microphone. Thanks
Glad it was helpful

Great video
Learned so much
Thank you
You're welcome
Well done 👍 Thumbs up 👍
Thank you Clarence
Very helpful thank you! Does this apply to squash and pumpkins as well? Thanks!
You're welcome. I have never tried it with those two fruits.
@@CountryLivingExperience thanks for replying!
I have a V shaped trellis with my cucumbers in middle and I dont' prune the suckers, I just trellis them on whichever side they tend to want to go to naturally, seems to work for better yields. I see your point if you just have a one sided trellis though
Finally getting some cumbers to grow. I'll put a video on my channel soon as I can. Prob couple weeks due to upcoming surgery.
Cool. Blessings for your surgery.
My cumbers plants are growing, but we've had an extreme heat advisory for the last two weeks. Is it safe to prune or should I wait until the heat calms down?
It should be safe to prune. Just keep them watered.
Thank you ❤❤❤❤❤
What are the water bottles on the base of the plant stem used for, worms is my guess? Is it effective? I had a caterpillar destroy my cucumber plant over night.
Yes, cutworms and vine borers. Helps out until the plant is strong.
Right on time here in Indiana I put my seed in seven days ago and they are now just breaking ground..
Awesome
What is the water bottle around to base for?
To protect from vine borer beetle.
Hello, what a great informative video on cukes. I’m very interested in the cattle panel arch. Do you have a video on how to do this?
Thank you
Glad it was helpful. I don't have a video on the trellis. All I do is take a 16' cattle panel and bend it into an arch. I then secure each side with a metal t-post. You may need 4 total t-posts so that the panel does not twist.
Thanks for the reply
Great video.
Thank you
Great video, thank you! Is there a way to prune the tops of the plants to stop the top growth? I only have a 6 ft trellis and no place for the vines beyond that.
You're welcome. Yes, you can prune the tops to limit height but you will have to let some side shoots grow so they can produce new growth for more cucumbers.
hello, friend. thank you for the video. i'm in the diboll/lufkin area of east tx and growing exclusively straight 8 cukes this year. the vines are crazy tall at this point, but i've harvested maybe three cucumbers. i've got mostly male flowers. i'm starting to see more cucumbers coming along, but i'm still scratching my head a bit. is this normal?
Try adding more phosphorus which will help with flowering.
I didnt know that my Cucumber plant needed pruning, and it turned into a total tangled mess.
I cut of atleast 4 stems that were about 3 ft long..
i have another 3-4 stems, some are 6ft long..
should i cut a few more? or leave them as is? I barely see any female fruits, the ones that i saw have now dried off.
Also, i am growing them in a pot in my patio.. so my trellis (tripod shaped) is about 4ft in height.
You can prune a few more at this time. Just get it to something you can manage and that produces well for you.
@@CountryLivingExperience okay, thanks for your response, really appreciate it. Also, how do i select a long stem to prune, as in which one should i get rid of basically?
It doesn't matter which one you keep.
@@CountryLivingExperience Thank you sir
Great info 👍🏾
Glad it was helpful
I get your point, but why would anyone prune cucumber suckers when they could flower and lead to more fruit?
@anthonyfakhoury7427 because sitting on the ground like that is a super bad thing for food plants. You dont wanr funky stuff from the ground growing onto and up the e tire plant.
What is the plastic bottle at bottom for???
Protection from borer beetles
Do tou have a video on how to prune Zuchinni.
I do. It is in our archives
How do you control slugs / snails?
I don’t have an issue with snails or slugs
@@CountryLivingExperience lucky you! Its a hell of a problem here in WA state.
@@nimageofmine I've placed cans of beer around strawberries to catch slugs. Just open the can and bury it a couple inches into the soil, I usually don't like to share, but it's for a good cause. Slugs/snails are attracted to beer, and they can't get out of the can!
@@juliefriedrich92 I've done that along with the copper tape so far. But I've recorded slugs getting into the can, sipping the bear and getting out. These guys are smart. :D
@@nimageofmine Did you drink some of the beer first? It works better if there is 1/4 to 1/3 beer in the can 🍓
Why are you using cut up water bottles?
When they are young the stems are delicate and there are a lot of insects that chew on young plants. This protects them when they are young.
That’s a great idea! I’ve seen people use foil on zucchini stems to protect from the vine bore. The plastic bottles are a good idea
@@CountryLivingExperience I need to found out what bug eating my new cucumbers plants 🥒 🌱- now I wait until they get they 3 leaves before planting
