I wish other history UA-camrs would learn from your perfect narrative pacing. You really give the listener/watcher an opportunity to absorb your points or descriptions before you move on to the next. Does SOOOOO much to elevate the experience

This is true Classical Antiquity… it’s quite literally the most exciting and interesting thing since archaeology . It’s enough to make me want to learn more.
Jesus was different because He didn’t care about the Romans ruling the land. He wasn’t concerned with Jewish independence, He was concerned with people’s souls. He even explicitly said at one point to give to Caesar what is Ceaser’s, referring to taxes. The Jews tried to force Him into that militaristic role at one point, but He refused. That is why He was so hated. He wasn’t the messiah that the Jews wanted, He was the messiah that the world needed.

The position of high priest and king were not "traditionally intertwined," as you repeatedly said. The positions had only been merged a few generations earlier in the Hasmonean dynasty.
According to the Hebrew Bible, the king descended from the line of David (a Judahite) and the high priest descended from Aaron (a Levite). The two were entirely separate.

Are you a believer? I think the actual characters started with David but I question the characters preceding him. When you really dig into the history you learn Judaism evolved out of the earlier Canaanite religion.
The original Israelites were indigenous Canaanites. El was the chief deity with Asherah as his wife, Baal and Anat his son and daughter.
Then you find God called Elyon and El Shaddai in the OT.

Firstly, the term messiah means anointed one. David was anointed, so Jesus wasn't the only one. Secondly, biblical prophecy is notoriously unreliable. Nothing is 100%. Thirdly, why do u gotta get all preachy? Just sit down and listen. Who knows, u might learn something.

U can't say ur book is special because it's your book, and your book says it's special so it is. As for cheating death, he was never in danger if he's actually god. I made that point satirically, but it's still valid. Saying that Jesus is the one true messiah is preposterous. All u had to do to be a messiah is be anointed with special oil and herbs. There were a few messiahs before Jesus. The importance of Jesus was that he was the last messiah. They had their stories and that's something the proto Christian writers tried to force into the narrative. John even writes that bizarre story where Mary anointed Jesus with expensive oil and herbs and Jesus just let's her like he doesn't think you should give your money to the poor.
There was a second, equally unsuccessful revolt during the reign of Hadrian - the Bar Kochbar revolt. Will you do a doc on that?

The Jewish revolt against Heraclius was part of the Byzantine-Sasanian War of 602-628 and is considered the last serious Jewish attempt to gain autonomy in Palaestina Prima prior to modern times.
The great exodus was the result of the final Roman-Jewish was under Hadrian.. all Jews must leave Judea.

We were on Masada in 1973. My dog was the first on Masada in 2000 years. There was no mechanical way to get up there back then. It was amazing seeing the outlines of those Roman encampments!

So much has been recorded in Israel. I watched this series of this struggle of the Jews at Masada years ago. 2009 I volunteered in Israel for 3 months & stayed at Ein Gedi but ran out of time to visit Masada. Seriously, my loss!

@@M1ggins omg yes, it's latterly vanishing before our very eyes. Theirs a few hotels out that way but traveling the area is very dangerous. From sink holes to land mines. I got some face therapeutic mud from the dead sea. I got a package of souvenirs from the locals very kind and beautiful country. I've been to the walling wall in Israel when we visited Haifa. Also a very beautiful city.
I think it’s amazing that the ramp the Romans built during the Siege of Masada has survived to this day.
Romans built things to last. Hence their buildings and roads and aqueducts and sewers still being around.

That siege ramp is a fantastic piece of military engineering. Roman resolve was unshakeable, and very very brutal. I would not have wanted to be one of the besieged in Massada in 73AD. They where brave to take on the Romans.

I guess I was a teen ager when the made for tv movie "Masada" was made. It was one of those epic multi-night events, just as "Roots" was a few years earlier. Well Done. Enjoyed this presentation very much.

Wow. Knowing that there were many other messiahs that claimed to be king of the Jews is eye-opening to me. The Bible was written by people that were trying to revolt against Roman rule, and establish a leader and a land to their own. I was raised by Christians and listened to readings from the Bible but I had never understood the context of the time. Thank you for the great content
