This song is one of the most wholeheartedly relatable songs I've ever heard. From the line "And she only looks like you, when shes in a certain light." To the very end. Its quite brutal, but absolutely truthful. Listened to this song I don't know how many times and it still hits every time.
Absolutely love the last line of the song. It's so perfectly petty. Any time he plays this song live the crowd erupts in cheers at that line because I think we've all had an ex that deep down we'd be happy to hear is sad and lonesome.
I hear Bob Dylan, Springsteen, Jason Isbell, Paul Simon....geez oh Pete!
How have I missed this guy? A new fan.
Make sure to get his albums Golden Age of Radio and Hello Starling!
Laurie Kester sounds like Jim Croce and don McLean
i love the line "But I will not chase your shadow as you go from room to room, dropping handkerchiefs and daggers smoking guns and other clues."
Me too. I like how it rides a nice line between malice and the politeness of concealing it with a smile.
I can't pretend that all is well, it's like I'm haunted by a ghost
There are times I cannot speak your name for the catchin' in my throat,
There are things I will not sing for the sting of sour notes.
I feel like a miser, I feel low and mean
For accusing you of stealin' what I offered you for free.
Still it baffles the belief sometimes what thieves we lovers be.
I don't know who you're with these days, might be with someone new
And if you are, I hope he treats you like a lover ought to do.
But whoever makes you happy, it don't really matter who
I've got a new lover now, I hope you've got a lover too.
Praise the water under bridges, the time they say will heal
Praise the fonder, that still grows on the absent heart and fields
Praise be to this pain, these days it's all I seem to feel.
Perhaps the fault was mine
Perhaps I just ignored who you're always gonna be,
Instead of who I took you for.
I've been treated worse it's true, still I expected more.
But I will not chase your shadow as you go from room to room,
Droppin' handkerchiefs and daggers, smokin' guns and other clues
For what someone did with someone and who did what to who.
I've got a new lover now, I hope you've got a lover too.
I've got a new lover now, I know that she's not mine,
I only want to hold her, I don't need to read her mind,
And she only looks like you when she's in a certain light.
I got a new lover now, she knows just what I need.
When I wake up in the night, she can read me back my dreams,
And she loves them, though she never needs to tell me what they mean.
I hope you've got a lover now, hope you've got somebody who
Can give you what you need like I couldn't seem to do.
But if you're sad and you are lonesome and you've got nobody true,
I'd be lying if I said that didn't make me happy too.
I'd be lying if I said that didn't make me happy too.
From: ST lyrics
Please don't ever stop making music. Your music is the calming breeze to my hectic days.
why is this not more popular than it is?
beautiful song
"..i'd be lying if i said that didn't make me happy too." ;) i hear ya JR
They say that most that is new is really variation on a theme...but this has that bit of Dylan to it and I love it.
Totally. I just came across Ritter because of an article comparing this album to Blood On The Tracks. And when Ritter sings "I've been treated worse it's true" I feel like I'm listening to Blood On The Tracks for a second.
I heard this song years ago and have spent the last year and a half trying to remember the title. Suddenly the name Josh Ritter popped into my head today ❤❤ im so happy to have found this song again!
this is a masterpiece
Going through a divorce, your wonderful song has brought me comfort tonight.
I am lost in youtube again at 3am. I found gems tho
I just drooled out my smiling mouth.
Watching the lyrics appear via a manual typewriter is strangely compelling and mesmerizing. I keep hearing 'it beggars the belief'- but it says 'baffles'. And I am. . . baffled.
I think the video is wrong. "Beggars" works better, and it sounds like what he's saying.
theres actual a few mistakes in the lyrics in the video. pretty sure it is beggars
He's utterly brilliant.
I found your music a while ago, and always revisit because you have a perspective of love I needed to hear. I'll be the one at your upcoming show in Houston crying my eyes out into the extra ticket I had bought for her.
Hope I don't ruin your set!
Preach it, Josh.
I love this song wholeheartedly.
Here because of the movie 'The Hollars', so glad I discovered this amazing artist ❤️
P.S: that instrumental at the beginning is one the most beautiful things I've ever heard
Best song of all time

I can relate to the song myself, but also love the beauty of many of your songs. I love the video with the type writer too. :)
As I type this comment there are 0 dislikes, as it should be. Let this comment be in memory of how all Josh's videos should be represented.
Great song and video!
What a perfect song.
I’d be lying if I said, that didn’t make me happy too ... “ fucking gold.
I can totally relate to this song too :-)

Is this song about me Josh?? 6years of my life wrapped up there in 4mins 24secs
Great song, love the video too
going up kid rely good keep it up good job
Good job!
love this tune ;) very catchy ;)
Here to potentially refresh thee UA-cam algorithm.
P.S. Gibbiie H.
I love this song and Josh have a voice as a Bob Dylan in "the times they are- a changing" =)
I like your video, thumb up for you!
I don't think he sounds like Bob Dylan. And I am a daily Bob Dylan listener. Bob is from Midwest and Josh is from Idaho and then they just don't sound like each other.
I think why you may think they do is because Josh is singing and means it. Just like Bob does. It's natural and passionate.
Did you guys hear that Josh Ritter song that sucked?
Me neither.

Finding this song 5 years ago could have helped me a lot. Better late than never, eh?
Good men.
Good point... here.
Anyone know the lyrics to this song?

Where to go? The smoke eat's my mind.

Wow it's pretty crazy to be the 14th person to see this video on UA-cam. Really loving it. But fyi there's a typo in the description on 'In Your Arms Again'. Sorry to be that guy. I'm a huge fan and a fellow songwriter. Much love!
He types fast.
The new Bob Dylan
In a way
Thanks
Laughing now, it's not enough.
Haha!
Good jam!
if this is the official lyrics then howcomes he sings "beggars the belief" whilst writes it "baffles the belief"? I am not sold.
Sound
Saw Josh Ritter a few years back leading off at John Prine concert. I am very impressed with his lyrics. No impressed musically. I keep waiting for a breakout tune or album. He is no John Prine. Not a bad Josh Ritter.
yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man
Free speech, give it a try.
@@stephenmartin3144 whoosh
think it's a Hammond B3 organ or a synth trying to replicate that sound...
More than three.
or maybe a Wurlitzer...
So he releases a breakup album with his wife a year after he's already had a child with his new lover. Wonder how that make her feel.
Let the man pour his heart out, It's probably for the best that artists often don't take their friends and lover's feelings into account and censor their work.
Since this song is about Haley Tanner and healing, I'd say she's pretty ok with it. Haley's husband had recently passed away too, from cancer. They went through the grieving process together. BTW, I happen to know them. ;)
For a couple drugs... for free.
Smh.
