I have a dream of coming to New Orleans and playing my clarinet with you!!! You inspire me to do more than the classical training I have. I’ve never been great with improv. But I’m finally planning the trip and hope to encounter your magic!
I don't even play the clarinet, and I'm watching this. I really really like your music Doreen. You made me cry when I listened to your performance with the Louisiana philharmonic. I've never cried during an instrumental performance before.
She's amazing. I'm a sax player but my favorite jazz musician in Benny Goodman. The more I listen to and appreciate Doreen, the more I see her and Benny in similar musical light. Their true voice is through their clarinets!...and they are fluent and eloquent!
I loved Benny Goodman and believed he was the best - Until Doreen. My opinion is that Doreen has surpassed Benney in every way and style. Goodman is good, Doreen is outstanding and no one is better, not even Benny.
oh oh, oh … no … come on now. Even Doreen wouldn’t agree with that (unless it gets funded) … I also play sax (alto, soprano and sopranino) but I recently came back to clarinet when I had to learn Jewish music for a new wife. My last lesson was when I was 10 in 1956. What an instrument! There are many great clarinet players. Look at UA-cam, especially classical and klezmer. What Doreen does is brings back is VOCAL to the instrument. This young lady may be turning the 21st Century music back to days when people doubled between voice and a horn or woodwind …. at least in NOLA. Social media can do that! Right Doreen? ❤️🥂🙏
I have studied music for years. I can't play well but I like music theory. She is one of the best teachers I have ever seen. I am a teacher and a coach so it's easy to recognize talent in teaching. Even my wife got this and she doesn't know a chord from a note but she understood this with ease. Just wow!!!!
DOREEN!! i study clarinet at university right now and i always get burnt out throughout the semester after practicing nonstop classical music. you bring me back to my passion every single time. THANK YOU
Few other musicians ever played melodies the way you do and even fewer do it so graciously and passionately. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your wonderful music, God Bless you and your family immensely. Greetings from Brazil!
I have always thought that the LUCKIEST THING, to ever have occurred in Benny Goodman's life...was that Doreen was still only a twinkle in her Daddy's eye....during the 40's...and he doesn't still (probably, lol) have a clue in how lucky he was.....that she came later, much later...... oh yeah.
Doreen, took lessons for 6 weeks 60 years ago. Still musically illiterate but started playing clarinet again last year by ear. Im ok but no wheres near your playing. Thanks so much for the tip. Will be playing with it for a while. Love listening to you.
I'm a trumpet player and I found this video more helpful than trumpet teachers teaching the same concept. You have such a pure spirit on top of being such a talented musician. I've heard of improvising around the melody first before tackling things like chord changes (in a jazz context) but now you've shown me in a way that makes perfect sense. This will definitely help me construct improvised soloes a lot easier too.
Doreen...you are a great Grand Master Class of the Clarinet.... and one of the reasons...is that you are a **most humble person**, with such God given talent to make that stick wail! God Bless, and your playing brings tears to my eyes, and such joy in my heart whenever I hear you. Again, Ma'am, God Bless! May He keep you and yours, safe.
Thanks. I do not play clarinet, but alto sax. However, what you just explained applies to music in general. You explain it so simple and that makes it easy to absorb. And please, continue to speak softly; that is a sign of being humble and that is good. Thanks again.
I played clarinet in middle school, and never liked it with the wooden reed and saliva 😂 but you changed all of that when I saw you at Dew Drop Jazz Hall in Mandeville - it was by the Grace of God and a wonderful neighbor that randomly invited me last minute. What an absolute honor it was to be in your audience, we were dancing outside in the grass, having dinner and wine on the mats and chairs outside while enjoying your amazing talent outside the jazz hall - looking in at you with the wooden windows open. The best memory of my life by any musician “ever”. You blew my mind and now I’m watching you wanting a clarinet so I can take lessons from you at 45 years old 😊 I would love to have a t-shirt, accessory, or gift with you, your name and/or your clarinet on it. I’m so excited and brag about you constantly to friends and make them listen on UA-cam. I design websites and do marketing (in New Orleans pre-Covid) and wanted to build your website after I heard your music. I hope you are doing extremely well financially for the beautiful talent you have been blessed with and learned over the years.
Doreen, I'm a 73 year old aspring clarinet player who's just discovered jazz and improvisation and want to get better. Your short video is a great introduction to what I was looking for. Thank you and much love from here in the UK. XXX PS. you play a mean clarinet...love it.
You can clearly see the passion, love and soul that goes into all this. What treat it is to watch you perform, teach and just bask your radiation. Keep up the good work - I believe you can withstand that challenging time ❤️
I love her energy and her vibe overall, it’s all just the frosting on the cake when she plays clarinet the way she does. She has a very satisfying sound on clarinet, it’s aggressive but sweet at the same time, sounds almost like a tenor sax a tad bit, I could listen to her play all day I swear.
I'm not the most highly trained player but I've been lucky enough to get involved with a really fun band, so I'm pushing myself to learn more. And in the time I've been playing your live videos have been a huge inspiration so getting a bit of tutelage from you is such a blessing! Thank you Queen!
Im in Vegas , love your voice , but that tone ! OMG super sassy , yucka butter , Unique in all ! Just love it , the way you release it when you play is such a inspiration to all of us .. Im cant wait till we play togther , until them keep killing em Ms Doreen !
I just found you and was astounded at the level of your improve...”but can she teach”, I wondered. Oh YES! Dear, you can teach improv to any musician, and if you could do it in a series of video lessons, like a lot of online personalities, I think you would be a huge hit. I would sign up. I play bass.
I was actually blown away by that end product. This video really taught me a lot, thank you for that. As a clarinet player in symphony 2, I plan on auditioning for the jazz band at my school and even though the piece we're playing isn't improv, this still helped me understand jazz just a little more
Blessings Sister Doreen , Praise Jesus Christ Forever , Thank You for sharing , Yes indeed , Mary had a little lamb , The Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world , Hallelujah , All who call on the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ will be saved , Prayers and Blessings Abundantly in Jesus name
Man what great advice, much more straight forward intro to jazz improv than any of the improv that my high school jazz teachers taught. Before talking about scales - which is important like you mentioned - you talk about structure, similar to how an English teacher talks about structure of a paragraph. Hope you are playing in front of live audiences again, you make Mary had a little lamb sound like a masterpiece.
You are incredible ! I gave away a clarinet a few years ago when I had my antique store ! I wish I had it now , I might have to give it a try ! Wow thank you Doreen ❤️🎶Queen Clarinet #1
Although clarinet is the perfect trouble mind for a sax player as I am in term of fingering, you motor me to handle it and put some kids on. Warmest hug from Madagascar. We love you Doreen. Stay blessed.
I am (or rather I used to be) a sax player, and every time I had to improvise for jazz I really sucked at it - it's because nobody taught me these excellent tips! Thanks Doreen, you are amazing.
I am not a clarinet player but I simply love you. You have the most welcoming personality and you are a great teacher. Even though I have no interest in the clarinet, you were having so much fun with this lesson that I was just sitting here smiling at the computer. You are a joy to watch. I'm going to subscribe just so I can get more of these good vibes every now and then. Thank you!!!
I discovered you since one day and thanks to you now i know how to growl on the clarinet and it's the coolest thing and the more i watch your videos the more i honestly love you
While clearing out a storage room day before yesterday, my son found my old clarinet from @ 1969 when I was in band class. I quit when I was 12, sadly, because the wonderful teacher I had from day one got a better job, and his replacement was a monster who ruled by fear. I quit the day he slapped me because my breathing was "off". It was off because I was crying. From that day on, I hated my clarinet, put it in the back of my closet but kept it all these years because it's a very nice instrument that my sweet mama bought me. She always bought quality. It's been 40 years since I touched it, but to my surprise I still remember how to play a little, and how to get a good sound. I'm retired and have time now, and fewer inhibitions. I've been noodling around on it, and can play a passable version of "Dream a Little Dream of Me", and "All of Me". I've been told that when the student is willing, the teacher appears. I'm ready, Doreen! You have a beautiful heart and your music flows from your love of art, and love itself. I'm ready for a new journey that will feed my soul.
Yeah I've been playing alto sax for like 13 years, always been talented (at least that's what they tell me ahah!) but never really committed myself to go professional because of, you know, life. Improv is one of those things I've never really got into, but after a long time of no-playing I've joined a small big band (sounds funny to put it that way) and I feel like time has come for me to improve my skillset, and I'm so looking forward to see some progress with improvisation. Nothing else, just wanted to show appreciation for your contents; also found hilarious how after the beautiful explanation she just proceeded to go absolute crazy with that thing and I just thought to myself "maaaan, the day you get to do stuff like that you'll know you're damn good" Blessings for y'all
i've seen you many times here on youtube.....you shouldn't be sitting at home behind a camera....you should be a star somewhere!!!! you are FANTASTIC!!!!!
Dear Doreen! I will visit New Orleans this summer. Looking forward to see you and listen to you! I really love your stile! You are a very gifted musician. Keep swinging Roland
The clarinet, lesson, song and teacher are all beautiful. You are an absolute treasure. Also, I think your voice and volume are perfect for the lesson.
never thought that i would be so impressed by mary had a little lamb but this was absolutely amazing, i didnt improv one time and it was literally just like half the scale swung
The clarinet is louder than when you speak because the clarinet is your voice. Thank you so much Dear Miss Doreen!
Hey Doreen sings too😂 And her singing voice is like MAGIC!! I love Nawlins its the most magical place in the world!!
@@mambojazz1"Nawlins" LOL, I love it.

I'm so glad i saw this video bc otherwise i probably wouldn't have picked up my clarinet again
I haven’t play since highschool and she inspired me to play again
...and for me, (LOL) to wanna put it away...LOL! I struggle not to....(very large smile!)
I bought a new clarinet to play after a thousand years. A friend turned me on to Doreen and she has become my inspiration!
I saw you with the fab 5! This helped so much! I've been struggling writing a jazz solo for my band and thanks!
"you can make a mistake in improv, bc you can resolve it the right way" I love that
Miss Doreen, you make me smile. Thank you for your gift of music and love.
You are way more than jazz... Unbelievable talent.

i have never played the clarinet in my life, but i've loved your lesson thank you :)
