34 is perfect for men. I love the fact that small sizes are coming back. I hope the tide turns this way and people can learn to see how sleek small watches look on large wrists.
FWIW the Vostok Classica range released in the fall of 2017 has a very similar dial design in a 39mm ss case. Comes in a range of colours and with the in-house 2409 hand winding movement.
Don't worry about the size too much. I have a 7-7/8" wrist and my favorite dress watch is a 33mm vintage Hamilton Dateline A-279. If I can pull it off some one with a 7" wrist could easily do it.
I have my Grandpa's Marlin from the early to mid 60s. Still works great and lots of sentimental value to me. He passed away in 1966. I might have to get one of these reissues!
Still have my first watch I actually bought myself from the 60’s a Timex. Looks like yours now and it keeps great time just needs a battery. I was so proud of that watch I recall back in Jr high.. How time flies.
Another similar watch is the Glashütte Sixties from the Vintage Collection. But the Timex comes at great price, I'll look if I can find one. Great review man, and the wrist shots with your daughter were adorable 👍😁
Got one of these and thought I'd take a look inside. Yes, It's a very small seagull movement, which crazily, has some decoration and blued screws. Here's an instagram link of the movement in slow motion. Note the big plastic spacer inside the case.
I know. Well, it's obviously a women's watch movement. It's funny how all the major movement manufacturers at one time were chasing the 'Smallest and Thinnest' movement as their goal and since watches started to get bigger, less of them until just recently -(I'm thinking the new movement inside the Black Bay Fifty eight) had any smallish movements in their stable. I'll also single out Seiko with their cocktail time watches. I had a SSA345J1 which admittedly has a beautiful dial but it wears way too thick as a dress watch. By comparison, my 1960's weekdater with a great complication wears just as a dress watch should.
Great watch. Great size. Timex must be making huge margins. I own it, i love it, and I hate to say it, but it's $50 watch. Cheap movt, nothing special about the case other than it's the correct size. Just an amazing $35 dial, $5 movt, and maybe another $10 to make the case and strap. The remain $150 is justified only for being bold and taking a risk. Bulova, pay attention think silver dollar size or smaller, not hockey puck size. Orient, your little baby, bambino ain't so little. Why is Timex the only company trying to take advantage of ppl like me, wanting vintage dress watches less vintage problems.
Late comment here. I'm looking to purchase this watch soon. One video I've watched claimed that this particular model runs fast. They said it gains about 10 seconds on the hour. Have you ran into this issue? How well does it precisely keep time?
I really like the smaller size but I am with you about 38mm being the perfect size. I have a Hamilton Khaki mechanical in 38mm and I love those dimensions. It is great that your daughter is interested in watches at such a young age. Great video Bruce!
Nice typewriter intro! The watch is way to small for my wrist. Although it is good to see Timex pull a watch from their history books especially a mechanical one at that and not quartz.
Great review! I like this watch. Is the Chinese movement serviceable ? Well there are lots of Swiss watches n Japanese watches n so they are usually serviceable as they are common. Not so sure about Chinese movement though . Thanks
Hey Bruce, thanks for the video. How do you think it would look with a brown strap? 🤔 do you find it difficult to read those hands because of the starburst face?
Hi Bruce, I agree, that watch is great but too small, I have a Vario that is 38mm it would be perfect if it had the same dial configuration, as it is it does have a sweeping second hand, no worries about the alignment with the indices!
Nothing wrong with 34 MM watch. I have a Rolex oyster about that size I wore while in the Navy in the 1970s. Many smaller vintage watches reside in my collection. I have a 7.75" wrist.
I don't see many ladies in my office wear a 34mm watch. Most wear 28mm and below, even ones with larger wrists. Tiny watches always work for ladies regardless of wrist size. 34mm is good for men with 7inch wrists and below. There's something very charming about men who dress nice and wear a small watch. The watch feel like part of their outfit instead of sticking out like it don't belong.
At $100, I would pick one up too.... But $199 is a pass when Orients with better movements can be had for far less. I am considering taking a risk on a GUANQIN GJ16034 with Seiko NH36 movement with hacking, hand wind and sapphire crystal for about $60. If buying a chinese watch like timex might as well go all the way.
The bubble crystal presents a problem. If you bump your watch hand on a desk or furniture the crystal may fall off. I had one many years ago. Timex should have gone low profile or flush crystal with the watch case.
Love the channel but I couldn’t wear this after seeing the movement and that spacer ring under the caseback. On the plus side at least they didn’t go for a display back
Nahhh 34mm looks great on u! That watch really pulls is off! Especially that some of the bracelet is on the from of ur wrist, instead of just the case! I like ! Great review!
I bought one of these but when I bought it, the price inflated. I am not 100% sold on vintage sizes except for dress watches. I feel perfect size for an everyday piece for a wide verity of wrists is a 40-42. I typically wear 38-40 but I have one 34mm watch I enjoy.
hi, do you still remember how long the watch last when fully wound? i fully wound (crown resist) at around 2.30 PM then it stopped working at 22.20 PM. Is it normal? thanks!
This watch movement is almost certainly a Sea-gull, there is a picture of it on the Long Island Watch website. Looks like the tough reliable and accurate St6. handwinding and hacking. I have an St5 in a Sea-gull watch, and a St6 in an Orex woman's watch. Its a small movement. You got a good deal for a hundred. 200 is too much. I will look for one secondhand when the fuss has died down. Also available in black.
beautiful watch.. however, something is not quite right? The watch is small but somehow doesn't look small on your fairly big wrist? is it the camera angle? hmm
Absolutely terrific review and production. Your camerawork is supreme. I do wish that Timex would have made a 38mm to go along with the 34mm. Makes me go with the Orient Bambino in that price range. When Bulova reissued their Moon Watch, they went with a 45mm, although it wears smaller. Should have been a 40-42mm. These 40's to 60's in-their-prime watch legends seem to get their dimensions wrong, but I sure love the look!
I think setting the size to 38mm would be overkill. I truly appreciate that they actually stayed true to the watch. The Bambino's design is not as refined to my eyes. It is all preference and a special larger version may be nice for some just not standard. I am glad to see the big watch craze dying down with the rise of 60s/70s inspired watches. I am quite biased out of 14 watches all are 38mm and under and only two made within the last 30 years. Most are in the 34-36 range. Also wish they could source a better movement
orion deschamps I have a Rolex Datejust Stainless w/Gold Fluted bezel from 1970. It's a 36mm and looks way too small on me now. 38-42mm is perfect for me now. My Bulova Moon Watch is a 45mm but wears like a 41-42. It has become my daily wearer...soon to be joined by the Orient Star Classic!
orion deschamps I'm wowed by the workmanship and quality of the Bulova. After owning the Speedmaster Professional for over 20 years, I honestly think that the case and bracelet on the Bulova are better. Can't really compare the Bulova Precisionist movement to the manual-wind of the Lemania, but still, the Precisionist's 2-5 second accuracy per year is compelling. Plus I love the buttery-smooth movement of the second hand.
Wanted to like this one but the tiny Seagull ladies watch movement with huge plastic spacer killed it for me. Why Timex went with this movement rather than something that fills the case remains a mystery. It might be fine, but Timex is being economical with the truth here.
Timex is being lazy, and making a good deal of money from it. There is nothing else like it on the new market. No competition means the consumer has to take it or leave it. Bulova and orient need to wake up, and show Timex who is king.
I like 34 mm and 36 mm watches. I like the retro vintage look......a little expensive though for a Timex. maybe if it was more water resistant it'd be worth it
$100 is a good price. Ridiculously small though, honestly. It’s not 1950 anymore .. hahah, looks like a dime on you Bruce. I need at least 37mm for my own comfort, at 7” wrist.
Such a shame about the movement. I'm looking for a mechanical dresswatch in this price range, 37mm or less, the only extra requirement being that I'd like to have a light dial with numerals. It's remarkably difficult to find anything.
The original Crystal was not acrylic as on this model, it’s slightly higher than the 1965 original of which this 2017 depicted. They cut corners on cost with that cheap strap, pure lizard skin in the 1960’s, the crown was bigger here, winding wasn’t as smooth, and has a louder tick, the case did not look like anything from Marlin range from 1965, notice the removal of Waterproof and Made in Great Britain from the face!.
My wife got me one for Christmas, yes it's small and I'm a big guy and I say so what. Anybody who knows about watches will instantly know what it is. I can't wait to see if anyone notices at the office, they all have huge oversized $400 clocks on thier wrists. LOL ! Those just look like clunky overstatements to me.
Bruce, stop being insecure about the sizing and no need to bring up that it is a ladies size swatch. Just wear the watch and use it as it was meant to be, tell time. Nonetheless, it was good that you got it at a lower price.
Mr. Informal- 34m was a mens size 40 years ago but is most definitely a ladies size today. I like 34-44mm myself, I don't discriminate with watch sizing. But there is nothing wrong with calling this a woman's sized watch. If anything it is descriptive
