You know, it's really sad when you think about what we were promised when the compact disc was introduced to the video game industry, compared to what we got. Don't get me wrong, I have a pretty extensive Sega CD collection myself. But I remember when the Sega CD launched and I remember the sales pitches back then, about how there was so much space on CD that, compared to the current cartridge format, developers now had an almost infinite amount of space to store more levels, backgrounds, dungeons and characters. And that sounded so awesome but then the reality of the video game industry kicked in and we, as gamers, were bombarded with shovelware titles, no budget FMV titles and shit tons of rehashed cartridge ports, containing the almighty CD quality sound. Now, granted, there are many Sega CD, Turbo Grafx CD and PC Engine CD titles out there that are dear to my heart but man, what happened to all those levels and characters and hours of exploration we were promised? I'm sure it had alot to do with the direction the industry was heading, more profit amd streamlined releases and whatnot but back in the day, before Jack Trammel and before Trip Hawkins, back during the Atari 2600 days, it was about making games we loved and developers putting their heart and soul into a game, not just to make profits go up, but to make sure that anyone else playing the game would feel the same sense of joy and excitement they did. I know these principles still exist today, with a few companies, but not like it was. And we, the gamers, really missed out on the CD era, a technology that could have changed everything for video games, was used and abused, simply to turn a buck. I mean, who wants to spend more time adding 20 more levels when we can sell the game now, as is...and move on to our next subpar project? Anyway, it just saddens me to look at this wonderful collection and know that it was all we got from the Sega CD. That collection should have about 200 more titles in it, you should be alot more broke and us gamers should have so many more great memories of our Sega CD. Nice collection man, and don't worry about the blunders on the names and pronunciations of some of the titles. At least you gathered up the courage to film your collection and share it with the UA-cam gaming community. Thanks for that!
I am with you man, the potential for so many great titles but Sega was in a really weird place at that moment in history. Sega America got stuck fighting Sega Japan and in the end no one was better for it. Sega Saturn saddens me as well even though I love that system, the rest of the world got a much better library but again Sega got caught with bad timing. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comments, this video def could have been better but it was almost 4 years ago and I was just learning. I still need to do a video for the Saturn and Genesis set. Hopefully soon
I know this is an old post, but I just wanted to respond to his part: "I remember the sales pitches back then, about how there was so much space on CD that, compared to the current cartridge format, developers now had an almost infinite amount of space to store more levels, backgrounds, dungeons and characters." Sega may have failed, but the CD format was revolutionary. The Playstation was released just 2 years after the Sega CD, and it has like 2500 games in its library, and most of them were leaps and bounds ahead of what was on typical cartridge games at the time. This is a big part of why the N64 was kind of a failure. The N64 only has like 350 titles in its library and a big part of it is because Nintendo stuck with cartridges. This caused all the 3rd party devs to leave Nintendo and head to Sony. So the CD format ushered in a new era of gaming, it just wasn't Sega at the helm of that ship like many thought it would be. Sega floundered and Sony stepped in and took over.
This is really cool. Nice collection, man. I used to be jealous of people like you, but now that I'm beginning to collect for myself, I understand that it's not about showing off, but to give yourself the good feeling of preserving a part of our gamer lives. It's comforting having games such as Panzer Saga in my collection. I don't know why. Maybe I'm just weird. ;)
I've always wondered, Are there appreciable differences between the Sega CD and 32x CD versions of identical games (Night Trap, Corpse Killer, etc), or was it largely just a way of repackaging and selling an identical title to the audience? And were the cartridge, CD, or both? Very confusing.
You sir have one of the most amazing collection i have ever seen....ever lol also you have them set up very neatly which i like because i'm pretty picky myself lol hell i have 1/10 of your collection XD still man very impressive stuff
Does rise of the dragon have a manual that matches the box in the 'no sticker' variation? I know when they released the one with the MA17 sticker on it, they used the more modern manual. I have never been able to find an original release and have found no info about if there was a different manual for it. thanks
This is an amazing collection. Out of all the past systems this was by far my favorite. I am feeling the extreme urge to buy all these again. I really want to replay some of these games. Especially Battlecorps. Select your language sweetmeat. Deutsch, Espanol, or whatever. XD
Sorry for my English can not speak it well, I just wanted to tell you that, while not a good console (Sega CD) deserves all the respect in the world for having all the titles released on the market. Here in Italy this console cost too much: (
Its definitely an impressive collection, I'm working on owning the anime style games that were lucky enough to make it to North America. There are only 22 of them, I got 4 down thankfully some of rarer ones and only 18 left to go.
Lovely collection! You yanks got a much better mega cd collection then we did and your prices are so much cheaper even though more people in the uk owned a megadrive/genesis over a snes. so you'd think we'd have sold more mega cd's we had no turbo grafx 16 cd rom so the mega cd for us truely was a wow factor as sega owned the marketing over here. i went spectrum 48k gsme gear, megadrive the mega was wank material i didn't get mine till i was 12 13 some years after realease!
Bug Blasters is not an official release, It is in the good deal game series which are all homebrews or games that weren't finished. I only collect official release titles but thank you for looking out.
omg you got the sega cd game called panic! at: 8:55? i love that sega cd game so much :D well that's the reason why i got a sega cd well actually i got 14 sega cd games in my collection. :)
@steveandbobsho Well their are a few differences both in the game and technically. Technically the 32x version has the same edit/censorship as the blue box rerelease, but the graphics are better and some of the FMV footage was either reshot or enhanced. The 32x/CD games boasted more colors 32,768 compared to 64, and better processing power due to the 32x attachment. Gameplay is generally the same but some of the text was changed and the game was made compatible with a 6 button controller.
was there any difference between a sega cd game and a sega 32x cd game? I never understood why Sega did that, a game that already existed on cd they made it 32x cd.
@tylursVideo I guess it really depends what you consider a fortune? I can tell you I got some really great deals on a few games and only spent over 50 twice on a game. Overall I am inclined to say I got some great deals. As to how? Well I collect in a number of ways from various sources. My next blog entry details my methods and some tools I use. You can find it at gameover-johnny.blogspot.com new post should be up tomorrow or Friday. Thanks for viewing
