    There’s one hardware thingy that I really like, that you didn’t mention, and it is very useful in a game like say Lords of Thunder, where the in game sounds can easily screw up the music, coz they’re too loud: you can control the volume of the in game sounds with the volume button on a mega drive/genesis model 1. It’s a small feat, but a very handy one. Can’t do it on the model 2 though...

    One thing I felt Sega should have done was use the MD+ feature more and release all their cart games with optional enhanced CD soundtracks that a customer could use if they had a Sega CD. This might also encourage people who don't have a Sega CD to want to get one.

      I totally agree with this. Being able to simply buy an audio CD to enhance a Genesis game if they had a Sega CD, it would've added a lot of value to that hardware. Also, since the Sega CD uses red book audio, those audio CDs could be used in regular CD players, so even people who didn't own a Sega CD would get some value. Hearing how much better the soundtrack could be might have enticed them to buy a Sega CD.

      @@GreyMatterShades Or even releasing all SEGA games as CDs and carts. If you shell out for the $99-299 addon (depending on when you bought it), you'd always get the game for $10 less and get improved SFX, music, artwork, cut scenes, and extra goodies.
      And usually have access to the game 1-4 weeks sooner.

    Really dig the music demos, so amazing for a kid like me who went from the Genesis to this. I was in completely impressed back then.

    Games I can think of that used Sega CD Hardware Scaling and Rotation is Batman Returns , Soul Star, F1 Beyond the Limit, Sonic CD, Jaguar XJ220, AH 3 thunderstrike, and BC Racers. Great game on Sega CD Snatcher, Final Fight CD, Popful Mail, Shining Force CD, Lunar: The Silver Star, Lunar: Eternal Blue, Sonic CD, The Terminator, Lords of Thunder, Keio Flying Squadron, Android Assault: The Revenge of Bari-Arm, Robo Aleste, and Flink. Flink use some scaling and rotation. Please do a video on Turbografx-16 and Turbografx-16 CD player.

    I was team SEGA during the 16-bit days. But, it was insane for SEGA to not add more colors. The best looking SEGA CD game couldn’t compete with the best the SNES had to offer.

    Hey man, awesome break down of the sega cd, people dont show enough love to the system, and dont go into detail like you did, but off topic, did you play the sugar daddy on the youtube couples chan dolce and nesha? i swear to god it gotta be you. haha

    If only Sega CD was using 16 bit RGB pallete instead of 9 RGB found in Sega Genesis, had 50% transparency of any color and the price was 150$ as it was planned, nintendo will lose.

      Yes, but that would require the addition of another Video Display Processor and outputting the Genesis/Megadrive display through the Sega CD, much like the 32X. By the time this add on was built up, it would've been better off as its own console. Even at 4 bits per channel, you get 4,096 colors. The color and bandwidth limitations of the Genesis are part of the reason why FMV cut scenes were so grainy and dithered.

    Sega CD increased the color palette? Makes you wonder why MK1 still looked the same color wise.

    • @MaxAbramson3
      @MaxAbramson3 2 роки тому +1

      Actually, it did neither. You could already get hundreds of colors onscreen out of the 512 color palette, and you could use Shadow/Highlight Mode to display images with a palette of 3,375 colors. You could also mix colors (vis a vis the Commodore 64 of Amiga's HAM mode) and get 3,375 by alternating dithered backgrounds. Sprites, also, could use similar techniques to get more colors.

    I tended to prefer the Mega Drive soundtrack to the cd one's, especially The Adventures of Batman and Robin. The seek time for loading cd audio was at it's worst when playing Theme Park. Every time you move the screen and a different ride comes into view the whole game stops for around a second to load the new music. It's broken. My favourite example of sprite and background scaling is Battlecorps from Core. I think they used the same engine for their AH-3 Thunderstrike and Soulstar games. It shows the MegaCD could scale sprites with the best of them. I have no idea what went wrong with Afterburner 3.

      Yeah, the seek time is something that breaks up the sound, but I am not the biggest fan of the stock Genesis sounds. Just like with anything, it depends on how it is used. :) Thanks for watching!

    just to clear up your explanation of FMV; the definition of FMV is "digital video data that is transmitted or stored on a disc etc for real time reproduction on a computer/video game console at a rate of NO LESS THAN 25 frames per second"

    • @MaxAbramson3
      @MaxAbramson3 2 роки тому

      What about film? That was played at 24fps for years. I've never seen that definition, btw.

    One of the very best marketing campaigns ever devised by a video game publisher/developer. It's not as hard hitting as "Sega Does What Nintendon't" but just as sharp.

    Nice episode. I would like to get some decent external speakers for my Sega cd just to get more out of my system. The game that comes to mind the most from a tech standpoint for scd would be Soul Star. If you haven't checked it out yet do so. It would pass for a early 32bit game. Another big upgraded game over snes is Final Fight. Look forward to seeing part 3. 😁👍

      Thanks, I'll have to check out Soul Star. I am having a lot of fun discovering the hidden gems of this console.

      @@PlayerOneStart I have Soul Star and can reccomend it from a technical standpoint. You'll see what I mean when you see it, play it, or both. I'd like to see and hear you talk about it in a future episode and hear your opinion on it.

    Pretty good video overall, but your Sonic CD bonus stage video is incorrect. On that subject, I'm surprised you didn't mention the QSound support in Sonic CD or at least give us a sample of Sonic Boom :)

    So 133 texture mapped triangles per frame at 15 fps?
    Hmmm….
    I think raw polys are going to be the best. Just pick good colors in your 3d model and pre bake them.
